Sony Ericsson’s looking to introduce the less exciting of new generation Xperia devices in Canada, it seems, as Sony Ericsson Canada has put up a coming soon page for it. No word was said on who would be getting it and when, but we know Rogers has a nice selection of Xperia devices headed to their subscribers soon and the Neo could join its cousins. Nexus S With AT&T 3G Radios Shows Up at Online Retailer

Online retailer Negri Electronics has seemingly outed an AT&T version of the Samsung Nexus S, but that most likely isn’t the case. Instead, it could be an import from overseas or simply a version of the device headed for several major Canadian carriers very soon. We’d bank heavily on the latter considering its modest price in US dollars. (Imports tend to be a lot more expensive than the MSRP.)

Whatever the case, if you have been wanting a Nexus S for AT&T and can’t wait for the powers that be to bring it then this may be your best shot. (That’s if you were already planning on getting it without a contract.) Head over there to purchase one if you’re feeling up to it. [via Android Central]

Android Developers Having Issues Updating Their Apps

We’ve been receiving a steady stream of emails these past few hours letting us know that developers are unable to access most of the Market Back End to do some of the basic things in life: upload new apps, update apps and view their comments. Whenever developers attempted to maintain their accounts, they are greeted with ominous errors such as “Failed to load application list. Try again later.”, “An unexpected error occurred. Please try again later.” and my favorite “You are not the owner of this application”. Yikes!

To top it all off, some developers are claiming that this has been going on for as long as three days with no response from Google. There is a topic started on the Google Help Forums. I’m not sure if those forums are for devs only, but if you can get in there let’s help out our developers and get Google off of the pot.

[Thanks to the Devs who sent this in!]

CDMA Xperia Play (Verizon) Hits the FCC With SIM Card Slot

We’re getting closer and closer to Verizon’s launch of the Sony Ericsson Xperia Play (it was originally rumored to be here at the middle of this month) and we’ve inched even further with this weekend’s FCC appearance. It’s not your ordinary FCC ordeal, either.

Shots of the device’s innards tell of a SIM card slot not unlike the ones Verizon use for their 4G LTE devices and phones. It’s unlikely that this is a 4G phone, though, otherwise Verizon would’ve been advertising that from the get-go. Verizon could announce availability of the device with quiet mention of it being a world phone like a few of their DROID offerings as of late. [via Wireless Goodness]

New Pictures of the Follow-Up to the Xperia X10 Mini Pro Surface With Gingerbread

Yes, folks, it still lives. Amidst the quartet of Android devices Sony Ericsson has already launched and will soon be launching, they aren’t forgetting about the folks who enjoy smaller, cuter devices with keyboards. Another crop of images have surfaced showing what looks to be the successor to the X10 Mini Pro. (The name is still up in the air.)

Things look pretty much like they always have, but these new shots confirm they’ll be sticking with a rendition of their custom overlay used on the first generation of Xperia devices (which differs from what’s on the Arc and Play) and will have Android 2.3 Gingerbread at launch. Cool beans, Sony Ericsson, but we want to see that Xperia Pro on store shelves before you officially out this thing. [via Unofficial SE Blog]

Samsung Galaxy Prevail to be Samsung’s Low-End Android for Boost

We received an invitation to New York to join Samsung as they look to unveil a new device for pre-paid carrier Boost Mobile, but had no idea what to expect. The event isn’t scheduled to go down until Tuesday, but Engadget’s received a 19-paged document in which they found the Samsung Galaxy Prevail a low-end Android handset.

From the looks of this thing, it’s about as bare an Android phone as you’re going to get. It has a now-smallish 3.2 inch capacitive display, a 2 megapixel camera, GPS, WiFi, Bluetooh, and expandable memory (among other usual suspects) – that’s  all that could be mustered up as far as specs go.

And judging by that list, I’d say don’t expect too much excitement in other areas such as processor, RAM, which version of Android it’ll run. Virgin also looks to be carrying the device, according to the same source. The device will cost $180 so this is as good as it’s going to get if you want a cheap introduction to Android.

New Platform Distribution Figures Show More of the Same [Froyo Dominates]

It’s that time of the month again – Google shows us a breakdown of Android versions across all officially certified devices. We last visited this two weeks ago, but much hasn’t changed since then. Without even looking at the numbers, Froyo is still on top by a wide margin, Android 2.1 is still out and about but is slowly dipping, Android 1.5 and 1.6 are nearly obsolete, and Android 2.3 and 3.0 aren’t in enough devices to make significant blips on the pie chart.

We expect to see these numbers change a lot in the next couple of months as the latest round of handsets and tablets are set to be released before and at the beginning of summer. We’re hoping that Honeycomb share will jump a ton, but we won’t be holding our breath. Get a look at the breakdown above. [via Android Developers]

Google Doodles Ice Cream Sundae

When Phandroid reader Bennett Todd [Thanks!] sent in a Phantip saying today’s Google Doodle hinted that perhaps an Android Ice Cream announcement was imminent, I rushed to check it out. Indeed, the April 3rd Google Doodle features two “Ice Cream Sundaes” as the O’s in Google.

Unfortunately, if you mouse over the image, you get the true reason why today’s Google Doodle includes Ice Cream:

119th Anniversary of the First Documented Ice Cream Sundae

Indeed, a quick all-knowing Wikipedia entry shows that April 3rd is the Ice Cream Sundae Anniversary:

Supporting Ithaca’s claim, researchers at The History Center in Tompkins County, New York, provide an account of how the sundae came to be: On Sunday, April 3, 1892 in Ithaca, John M. Scott, a Unitarian Church minister, and Chester Platt, co-owner of Platt & Colt Pharmacy, created the first historically documented sundae.[4][5] Platt covered dishes of ice cream with cherry syrup and candied cherries on a whim. The men named the dish “Cherry Sunday” in honor of the day it was created. The oldest-known written evidence of a sundae is Platt & Colt’s newspaper ad for a “Cherry Sunday” placed in the Ithaca Daily Journal on April 5, 1892. By May, 1892, the Platt & Colt soda fountain also served “Strawberry Sundays,” and later, “Chocolate Sundays.” Platt & Colt’s “Sundays” grew so popular that by 1894, Chester Platt attempted to trademark the term ice cream “Sunday.”[6];

But in that very same article, stories from Evanston, Illinois and Two Rivers, Wisconsin claim THEY invented the Ice Cream Sundae in 1890 and 1881 respectively. The Ithaca story is from 1892. The folks from Ithaca have refuted one of the stories and keep in mind that Google states “First Documented” Ice Cream Sundae not the first one to invent the Ice Cream Sundae, so now age old disputes are getting solved here.

It appears as though this is more of a coincidence than anything else. I wouldn’t expect an Ice Cream announcement before Google IO, but when it is announced, I’m now wondering if Google will go with Ice Cream Sundae instead of the previously rumored Ice Cream or Ice Cream Sandwich. Afterall… they’ve got to put SOMETHING in that lawn of theirs!
