HTC Rider, and Kingdom pictures leaked

Posted: 28 Apr 2011 11:06 AM PDT

Well what do we have here, these could be really fun to see. Next generation devices from HTC possibly? Or they might be the European version of upcoming phones like the EVO 3D or the HTC Sensation. We aren’t sure as they look pretty familiar. See for yourself below.

The first photo above is being called the HTC Rider, it looks to be very similar to already released phones like the Thunderbolt with a 4.3″ screen and front facing camera, only it is red. We don’t have much to go on here but thought you’d all like to see it anyways. The HTC logo is covered by something and we don’t see the Verizon branding in the top right either. Maybe it will say T-Mobile there instead, Just saying!

Next we have the HTC Kingdom below, and just like its brother or sister above it also looks like a possible twin of current phones on the market with that strikingly similar speaker grill and front camera as well. I will mention that just as our source said the Kingdom looks to be a little thinner than the other phones out. It still looks 4.3″ but seems thinner and taller like the Droid X rather than the EVO. Interesting indeed. Hopefully we will be finding out some more information on these soon. We will be sure to keep you all posted.

Motorola Xoom Camera Connection Kit now available at Verizon

Posted: 28 Apr 2011 10:33 AM PDT

It looks like Motorola has now introduced a Camera Connection Kit for the Motorola Xoom. I know this may be as of use to some of you out there, but for me I just transfer with Dropbox or over USB from my computer. This is basically a cable that will let you easily, and conveniently transfer pictures from your camera right to the Motorola Xoom.

For me personally, I don’t think I’d spend the $20 on this cable being how easy it is for me to transfer things like photo’s to the Xoom, but those that transfer large amounts of photos and often, this may be extremely useful. It is available now according to sources, but only through Verizon.

So if this is something you’d like, or need then feel free to call your Verizon Wireless customer service or stop by a store today and get your own. They should be able to get one to you right away, or shipped at least. You might need the following SKU - MOTMZ600ADPKIT or just tell them you want the Motorola Xoom Camera Kit. In case you haven’t heard we are expecting a OTA update for the Xoom today, and we are still giving some away for FREE.

Samsung Epic Android 2.3 Gingerbread build leaked

Posted: 28 Apr 2011 10:22 AM PDT

Looks like the amazing developers from XDA have done it again, as always they bring us the latest and greatest for our android phones. This is a leaked build of Android 2.3.3 Gingerbread for the Samsung Epic. It comes pre-rooted for your convenience and is brought to us by ACS the Android Creative Syndicate Team. This is an official leaked build, but it still has some bugs to iron out, but as always we bring it to you as we see it. You can flash this if you’d like.

You could just do what many of us around Android do, and flash CyanogenMod7 for the Epic instead. That would be my first choice, but an official build is nice as well and I would be fine with that. ACS mention that there is still bugs to fix, and there is currently no EXT4 support in this rom, they tried but didn’t get it working in time. I’m sure that will come soon enough.

As with anything this involved, make sure you are careful and know what you are doing. If you are looking to flash this I’m assuming you already know the risks of flashing leaked builds, but as always make sure to use caution and be sure to back up or nandroid before you continue. I like to always have backups of everything. For all the information check out the source link below, and make sure to read post 2 for all the bugs and issues still currently listed.

LG Optimus Big launches in Korea, we want some in the U.S.

Posted: 28 Apr 2011 10:04 AM PDT

You may or may not remember this device named the LG Big, but we sure do. It looks like a great phone, we mentioned it back in March and it looked good then, and even better now it is launching. With that 4.3″ NOVA IPS Display, 16GB built-in storage and all those other specs we have grown to love on our Android phones, this surely looks nice.

We aren’t sure what processor it will have. We have heard the usual 1 Ghz, but are still unsure if that is single or dual-core, but hopefully it is the latter of the two. LG has been touting their display technology and claims this NOVA Display we also saw in the Optimus Black is some quality stuff. Taking on Samsung and their SAMOLED Display. LG promises better colors, deeper blacks, and better battery life, oh and that it is way brighter at the same time.

This is all good news for LG, that has been hitting Android hard as of late. With phones like the G2x just launching, and the LG Revolution coming to Verizon. LG looks to be getting excited with all this, and I can’t wait to see what else they bring our way.

Mossberg reviews LG G-Slate says it’s not as good as iPad 2

Posted: 28 Apr 2011 07:18 AM PDT

The gadget godfather over at the Wall Street Journal is Walter Mossberg. This is a geek of a different color than us normal folks and one review good or bad from Mossberg can make or break a new product on the market. More than one bad review from Mossberg has heralded the demise of the dreams of sales glory for a manufacturer.

Mossberg has laid his hands on the LG G-Slate tablet that we have talked about before. The G-Slate sells for about $750 with no data contract. He noted in the review that the tablet performs pretty well overall. However, the real killer comment for LG was this one, “The G-Slate isn't as good a tablet as the iPad 2. I'd only recommend it for people who want the higher cellular speeds, or who prefer Android.”

If you don't care what Mossberg thinks you can get the tablet right now. It’s got nice hardware with a dual-core Tegra processor and Android 3.0 as the OS. The screen is an 8.9-inch unit that is multi-touch compatible and it will show 3D content if you wear glasses. The tablet is Google certified as well and has a 2MP front camera and a 5MP rear camera.

Nook Color 1.2 update bricking some tablets

Posted: 28 Apr 2011 05:03 AM PDT

I mentioned this week that the Barnes & Noble Nook Color Android-powered eReader was getting an update to version 1.2. The new update was notable because it is the first official step by B&N to bring the Nook Color to full Android tablet status. At the time, I talked about the update, I mentioned it would be rolled out automatically, but users not wanting to wait could apply the update manually. Reports are coming in now that there is a major issue with the 1.2 update.

Gotabemobile reports that the forums at B&N has multiple threads with users who updated to 1.2 and have since seen their tablet reset for unknown reasons. The bad part is that when the tablets reset, they are not able to reconnect to the B&N network and register themselves again. A Nook Color that isn't registered is essentially worthless. The users fighting the issue are greeted with the notification you see in the photo above.

The bad part is that even users who had no trouble with the installation of the new 1.2 firmware to start with have now found their tablet reset and unusable. At this point, there seems to be some indication that the problem might be related to those that did the update manually with the update being applied again by B&N automatically, but that hasn’t been confirmed. There is also an issue with WiFi connectivity after the update was applied with users reportedly unable to connect to WiFi intermittently.

Thanks Josh!

Samsung Galaxy S II officially launched today

Posted: 28 Apr 2011 03:48 AM PDT

Samsung is officially launching the Galaxy S II today, though UK sales of the dual-core Android smartphone did kick off in the UK yesterday. The subject of a huge Media Day in Korea this morning, Samsung expects to ship the Galaxy S II on over 140 carriers in 120 countries worldwide.

As we found in our full Samsung Galaxy S II review, the 1.2GHz Exynos processor and Super AMOLED Plus touchscreen make for a potent combination. Surprisingly, though, the Galaxy S II particularly delivers on battery life, lasting for two days of heavy use.

Meanwhile, in Korea there’s a version of the Galaxy S II with an integrated DMB digital TV tuner – which adds 1mm to the smartphone’s thickness – and there’ll be various NFC and non-NFC versions depending on region. Samsung even went to the trouble of calculating the average length of the Korean thumb (58.6mm, if you’re curious) and reckon the 4.3-inch display is perfectly suited to one-handed use.

Droid Bionic coming this summer in a new form factor

Posted: 28 Apr 2011 03:36 AM PDT

I mentioned about a week ago that word had surfaced that the Droid Bionic that had turned up at CES had been delayed. At the time, the only details we had to go on were that the Bionic was delayed for unspecified updates. At the time, Motorola gave us no indication of exactly what those modifications would be. Interestingly a new page has turned up on the Motorola website carrying the same CES reveal date, but the page is tweaked and shows what will be coming for the device when it lands.

According to the page includes a paragraph that spells out some of the changes that Motorola is making to the device based on customer feedback. The photo attached here is the original Droid Bionic. This as close as you will ever get to owning the Bionic in that form factor. Verizon Wireless will still be getting the smartphone, but it will be a “new” Droid Bionic. Gottabemobile notes that the device is still expected to be a 4G LTE offering. However, the geeks at Gottabemobile think the Bionic may take the form factor of the leaked Targa.

The passage on the Motorola page reads, “Based on compelling feedback since the show, we are incorporating several enhancements to make this an even better consumer experience. This includes expanded features, functionality and an improved form factor. Motorola Mobility and Verizon Wireless are very excited about bringing the 'new' DROID BIONIC to market.” The exact changes that to be made to the device are not clearly spelled out, but it is apparent that the device will have a different form factor.

DROID Charge Hands-On and Unboxing

Posted: 27 Apr 2011 11:22 PM PDT

How would you like to take a closer look at the newest fabulous addition to the 4G LTE family at Verizon? We just happen to have Samsung’s DROID Charge sitting here in a box and we’d love to let you have a look! It’s a fat phone with hard plastic chassis, four physical buttons up front, a diamond-shaped housing for a camera in the back, and ultra-fast speeds inside*. The display is a gigantic 4.3-inch Super AMOLED Plus capacitive touchscreen, and you can take that all the way to the bank – brightness and viewing angles galore! So sharp you’re going to cut your eyes open on it!

*We’re going to be unable to test the LTE speeds of this device until Verizon gets its 4G network back online, but we suppose this will be very soon, soon as in sooner than our review will be popping up.

This device is running Android 2.2 Froyo with TouchWiz 3.0, Samsung’s custom user interface, over the top. I know you were hoping it’d be TouchWiz 4.0, that sweet new version with the super awesome oddities as shown off during our trip to CTIA 2011 in Orlando – thank you for the demo Philip Berne, but you’re still going to have to wait – that version will be coming out with the Galaxy S II. What we’ve got here instead is everyone’s favorite, TouchWiz 3.0, fully in tow.

Inside you’re going to find a 1GHz single-core processor from Qualcomm, 1.10GB of internal storage and a microSD card slot under the battery cover capable of holding a 32GB card – and it conveniently comes with just that size a card, too! Handy. Up front there’s a 1.3-megapixel camera, in the back there’s an 8-megapixel camera with LED flash and 1280×720 recording – not quite 1080p, if you’re counting. Take a peek at an example photo here – shot in relatively low florescent-lit environment:

8 Megapixel Photo Example

And what about the display? Is is spectacular? This question answers itself. This display is second to none. Have a look at it next to the G2x’s IPS LCD and the HTC ThunderBolt’s TFT LCD displays – kind looks sorta nice, yes? Holding any of these devices on their own will result in you loving the display they’re toting – we’re living in a really cool time in history where digital display technology is excellent all-around, but that Super AMOLED Plus – wowie zowie!

HTC ThunderBolt, Samsung DROID Charge, LG G2x

Then there’s the physical buttons. It feels a bit odd having physical buttons in this modern no-physicality world of handsets, especially when one finds that most of the time these buttons are only otherwise on lower-tier phones and physical fold or slide-out keyboards. Whether or not you find them to be a welcome change after having used a smartphone with a capacitive home-set of buttons or not is going to be completely up to you.

Unboxing and Hands-On with DROID Charge

The box this device comes in really pushes the on-shelf value of the device, lending to the idea that yours truly has about the future of mobile computing. — That being that we’re going to see a much more common model of sales in the future, one where the carriers no longer hold all the power, the manufacturers do. The device itself is made mostly of plastic, with a mic hole at the top and a mic hole at the bottom for noise cancelation. On top also is a headphone jack, on the right you’ll find the power/display button and an intensely securely covered HDMI port – so tough, so rough!

On the left is your microUSB port, fancy volume dongle, and a tiny little hole where you can run a bangle through. I’ve also been noticing these little holes what seems like more often now too – open the batter cover and you’ll find access to a stick of plastic over which you can place the thread from your bangle. If you’re unaware of what a bangle is, don’t fret – I’ll have one on the phone for the full review. Also the phone will be stocked for the review with hot high-res video and some sweet tunes and whatnot – all the greatest stuff!

Currently on the phone there’s 48 apps. This is about average for a Google-certified phone, if you’d like to know, as both Google and the manufacturer (Samsung in this case) want consumers to use their apps instead of the competition – what better placement than already stocked on the phone? Most of the apps you will not use, several you’ll find invaluable.

The form of the phone is nearly unique. You’ll find inspiration for the back of the phone in the Nexus S, with its ramp up the bottom. You’ll find inspiration for the battery cover in the Galaxy S 4G with its slightly unique pattern and plastic-y feel. The chrome rim around the outside front-half of the phone makes takes the mostly-plastic and lightweight feel of the phone and turns the aesthetic back over to top-tier. And it just feels like a bigtime device. Just feels like it!

Swoop – there it is. And some keys below:

Have a peek above and below at some video and photos that’ll give you sort of a preview of our full review of this device coming your way SOOOON!

G2x and G-Slate Both Have IPS Display [CONFIRMED]

Posted: 27 Apr 2011 11:01 PM PDT

We’ve just received official word from LG that both the T-Mobile G2x and the G-Slate BOTH have IPS displays. There’s been a bit of debate about this as of late, whether the display on these devices were simply TFT or if they amped it up a few notches to the more expensive and more fantastic in both color and viewing angles In-Plane Switching (IPS.) What does this mean, you might ask? Why should I give one hoot? Because now you know you can watch Tron: Legacy with the BRIGHT lights!

If you’ve been trolling these internets for word on how everyone’s display’s been working, like I have, you’ll notice that there’s two major items being spoken about. First, there’s one thread on XDA that speaks on what I’d like to talk about: “The contrast ratio is terrible on this phone”, and second, a post right here on Android Community made by one of our resident hacksmeisters Cory Gunther: LG G2x Having LCD Screen Bleeding Issues? Quality Control? This first post, the post starter, was more than likely experiencing some irritable bleed:

Forget the bleeding lcd edges , its the horrible contrast on this phone that will probably cause me to return it.

After coming from the inky black Amoled screen on the Nexus s , this is the most disappointing aspect of otherwise top of the line phone. You can’t get a true black on this phone , the best it does is dark glowing gray. In fact anything with a black background looks gray , not total absence of light Black.

I realize that this phone has an LCD screen not an amoled screen , but I never thought the difference would be this pronounced. Example : when I power up my Nexus S the screen is pitch black and when the white Google logo appears, it will appear to floating in space in a dark room. The G2x display will put off it own light, making it very visible in a dark room.

This is a fellow separate from our editor Cory who also has his original G2x unit exchanged and is very satisfied with the result. Inky black, sweet color explosions, and no bleed! The thread on color went on to say, via many satisfied customers:

The blacks on AMOLED will always be darker than the blacks on LCD that uses backlighting. The blacks on amoled doesn’t have light behind it so its gonna be darker, because there isn’t a light source lighting up behind it. This comparison doesn’t make sense. If you compare the GX2 any other LCD display on a phone it will out shine it hands down.

I am coming from a Vibrant and find the G2x display easier on the eyes. Yes the blacks looked better on the S-AMOLED but the colors are more natural on the G2x. However what I find to be most important is text look a lot better on the G2x display than the Vibrants Pentile display. I don’t have to zoom in anymore to read text on webpages like I did with my Vibrant.

What the G2x AND the G-Slate have is LG’s newest IPS technology, heavy duty excellence in an LCD pack. For all the sharpness, brightness, and contrast you’ll love to see: “P-IPS, debut 2010, Professional IPS, Offer 1.07 billion colours (30-bit colour depth). More possible orientations per sub-pixel (1024 as opposed to 256) and produces a better true colour depth.” — wiki Exciting! For some additional physical comparisons to a few other new Android devices, check out the post entitled G2x vs ThunderBolt vs Atrix 4G vs Sidekick!

U.S. Army to launch custom app store for the Military

Posted: 27 Apr 2011 02:35 PM PDT

The U.S. Army has launched an official app store tailed specifically for Military and other Army personnel. It is going to be filled with Android and iOS apps that will benefit members of the Military. We are also hearing soldiers will be able to request apps that they need but aren’t there yet. This is not officially been released on Android or iOS yet, but they plan to shortly.

We aren’t sure exactly the name yet, looks like Army Marketplace for now. If they can overcome all the different issues, and possible security problems this app store will be coming to the military sooner than later. It is currently web based but they plan to release an actual market app. There are 17 Android apps and 16 iOS apps available now. The website is currently only accessible to Department of Defense personnel who have a login and password. We have heard the Army expects the site to be fully operational come August.

Currently no mobile device has achieved certification to access the military networks as of yet, so once all the security holes and certifications get approved we should be seeing more and more of this tool for our soldiers. Android phone and tablets are currently in the process of getting certified, so hopefully the wait should not be too long.

No Droid Charge sales til 4G LTE Outage is fixed

Posted: 27 Apr 2011 02:21 PM PDT

Uh Oh, I smell a little trouble for all you Droid Charge fans that were planning on buying or getting the Droid Charge tomorrow. For those not keeping up with news today Verizon Wireless and their exciting new 4G LTE Network has been down all day, you can read more about that here.

According to some news from an official Verizon spokeperson, it looks like unless this issue is resolved they wont be selling the Droid Charge, and people that are getting it delivered wont be able to activate their devices. This is what she had to say, courtesy of thedroidguy:

· 4G LTE Smartphones will still be able to make calls.

· Customers are temporarily unable to activate any 4G LTE devices.

· Please note: Customers may experience a 1XRTT data connection during this time.

· We expect to see the network restored on a market-by-market basis. Timing and additional details will be provided as they become available.

If we read that right customers are going to be unable to activate ANY 4G LTE Devices. So if you were planning on getting the Droid Charge, or the Thunderbolt you may be out of luck until further notice, or until they get this network up and running again. For now this is just an outage and Verizon has already said they have found and are working on a fix. So things may be back to normal tomorrow, but we wont know until we start to see the network back in full.

Android Community’s Official “Glass” Boot Animation

Posted: 27 Apr 2011 02:17 PM PDT

Behold, the greatest boot animation you’ll ever have seen in your entire life! As you’re certainly well aware, one of the more instantly evident benefits of rooting your Android device is the ability to change the fancy animation that plays between your device’s loading screen and your phone being fully activated after you turn it on. Up until now, you were only able to play the odd sweetness like a Particle Ring or an Apple Buster. Now you can have the tops – the sweetness – the brand new Android Community “Glass” Boot Animation!

Oh how sweet! We’ve got several size choices for your viewing pleasure. You can grab one for your G2x, take one for your HTC ThunderBolt, and yes, even get one for your favorite Android tablet, the Motorola XOOM! Oh you don’t have a XOOM? Win one in our contest here: [GIGANTIC TABLET GIVEAWAY] You can also snatch one up for basically any Android device currently on the market with the resolutions we’ve got available right this moment. There’s also an OGG sound file up for grabs so that you might have some excellent machinery moving around while you wait for your massively hacked device to boot.

More than likely your device will have loaded by the end of the animation sequence. However, the sequence does work in a loop just incase your device takes an extra long time to boot. The audio (should you choose to use it) only runs once. Also depending on which size you have, the animation will run the way you see here or backward, vertical or horizontal. It’s like a lottery!

480 x 800 [HTC ThunderBolt, T-Mobile G2x, Optimus 2x, Inspire 4G, Galaxy S i9000, G2, EVO, basically every other Android phone under the sun]
1280 x 800 [XOOM]
1280 x 768 [T-Mobile G-Slate]
and
960 x 540 [Droid Bionic]

If you’d like a different size, just post below and we’ll see what we can work up. Meanwhile, here’s how you’re going to make these sizes work for you:

Use Root Explorer to copy the zip file, (bootanimation.zip, included in each download,) to
- system/media
- system/media on CM ROMs

- system/customize/resource on Sense ROMs
(if you don’t know what you have, it’s probably Sense)

You’re already going to have a bootanimation.zip sitting in the folder there in your system if you’re in the right place. You’ll either want to delete and replace or just replace this file with your new one. Save your original file somewhere else if you plan on moving back to it in the future. Also included in every download is a sound file that you can choose to add to your boot sequence by again using Root Explorer to copy it and place it here:
- system/media/audio/poweron
There will be a file there called PowerOn.ogg that you’ll have to replace the same way you replaced the bootanimation.zip. Simple!

Enjoy, and if you’ve got any problems, or if you want a new size for whatever device you’re working with, comment below!

All this and MORE in the Android Community forums!

Motorola Xoom getting OTA Update tomorrow, still no SD support

Posted: 27 Apr 2011 01:57 PM PDT

Looks like there is now some news that the Motorola Xoom is getting an OTA update tomorrow. This news has just dropped from our friends at DroidLife. This looks to address some issues, as well as add new features. Things like Bluetooth support to GTalk, as well as bluetooth mouse support for the Xoom. There is also mention of addition proxy support, SSL data transfer with websites, and more. Check it out.

From the looks of things it will be a 28MB update. Those worried about root or being unlocked should probably wait and see what everyone says once the update starts hitting our devices. We will probably be able to flash the update sometime shortly after it is released anyways, for those like me that wont be getting it OTA.

They have even added a shortcut key for the bluetooth keyboard support they are also adding with this update. This news going along great with this story also posted today about a Keyboard Folio case for the Xoom on its way soon. We can now assume that will most likely be bluetooth. We will update once the devices start getting the update tomorrow.

Motorola Atrix 4G Gets HSUPA, Not From AT&T but from XDA

Posted: 27 Apr 2011 12:51 PM PDT

I am happy to report that we have now got word that Motorola Atrix users that are rooted can now get HSUPA speeds on their device, but not from AT&T, not yet. This comes from XDA forum members drew.man and NFHimself. They have fixed this issue that we have all been reported and waiting on, and were nice enough to share it with the rest of you Atrix owners.

I will mention that this is a slightly involved process, and as always make sure you are careful, and do anything like this at your own risk. I like to have anything and everything backed up before tackling anything like this. In order to do this, you will need a rooted Motorola Atrix, the modified SBF files, and RSD Lite, the program used to flash the SBF files to your Motorola Atrix.

You can do the fix provided by these awesome developers from XDA, or just wait it out for whenever AT&T decided to roll out the “fix” we have heard them mention more than a few times. This is a simple radio flash, but as always use caution. You can read more over at the thread on XDA, or check out the source for full instructions.

Motorola Keyboard Folio case for the Xoom in the works

Posted: 27 Apr 2011 12:25 PM PDT

The Motorola Xoom has been a popular little device. Some new information looks to show that Motorola might be planning a Keyboard Folio case similar to the portfolio case they offer now, but with a bluetooth or USB Keyboard included. This would probably be a good idea considering the Asus Transformer has one and it has been a pretty big hit so far.

Update: Most likely a Bluetooth keyboard will be with this case, to go nicely with the Bluetooth support coming in tomorrow’s Xoom OTA Update.

If the picture above is any indication, they have already designed this case and it is coming soon. Although we have seen leaked pictures of flyers from Verizon before and waited months for the device in the past, but i doubt that is the case here. The Motorola Xoom Portfolio case offered currently is around $35 dollars, you can see those accessories here.

So far we have no others news or images to go off other than what is above, no price has been leaked or announced yet either, but I would imagine this to be an expensive accessory for the Xoom considering the others pricing. We will let you know as soon as we here more, and hopefully get a review unit to try ourselves. Oh and in case you didn’t know, we are still currently giving away a Motorola Xoom for FREE, find out more here.

Epix HD bringing movies to Android phones and tablets

Posted: 27 Apr 2011 12:09 PM PDT

As some movie streaming providers are moving away from Google TV, Epix has gotten closer and are currently available to stream HD movies with Google TV. With other big names and companies like Netflix to still not have a full out app for Android yet, Epix has came to the rescue and plan to release their movie service across multiple devices including Google TV, Android phones and tablets, even the new BlackBerry PlayBook.

Epix has a “Big on any Screen” slogan and it looks like they plan to do just that. Bring big movies to any screen. They are bringing an app for android that will work on both phones and tablets soon. Hopefully for them they get this out and fully working before Netflix does. This could get them some serious business since people are still waiting for a great service like this.

For those that don’t know, Epix has over 3,000 movies for its subscribers to watch at any time, just like other movie providers do. They didn’t mention anything about iOS in the press release we will be posting below, but we have heard they have an app waiting approval for the Apple App Store also. So it sounds like they plan to attack all areas of Mobile with their new movie streaming app.

EPIX Expands Availability across Consumer Electronic and Mobile Devices

New Apps Enable Authenticated Subscribers to Stream 3,000 EPIX Movies and Original Programming on Over One Hundred Devices

EPIX to Partner with Distributors in Campaign to Use Apps to Attract New, Authenticated Subscribers

New York, NY, April 27, 2011 – Continuing to expand availability wherever viewers are consuming video, EPIX, the premium entertainment channel, video-on-demand and online service, today unveiled apps for download on over one hundred consumer electronic and mobile devices including Android™-powered tablets and phones from a variety of manufacturers such as Motorola®, HTC® and LG®; Samsung® TVs and Blu-Ray™ players; Google TV™; Roku® streaming players; and the BlackBerry® PlayBook™. This is the next phase of EPIX’s multi-platform growth strategy as EPIX continues to expand its leadership in authentication and multi-screen entertainment.

All EPIX apps are free and allow subscribers who are authenticated via cable, satellite and telco distributors to access over 3,000 EPIX movies plus original programming and extras on demand anywhere there is an Internet connection.

As part of the launch campaign for the apps, EPIX is working with distributors to expand the universe of authenticated subscribers via sampling opportunities among heavy consumers of online video. The EPIX apps will provide all consumers free access to EPIX’s robust offering of movie trailers, interviews and short form video content. Movie fans will be offered limited free trials to watch EPIX movies and original programs and EPIX will connect those who sample the service to affiliated distributors to subscribe.

“Our business was created to take advantage of the changing landscape, understanding how consumers are using technology, and we have been able to successfully work with our partners to create new ways for authenticated subscribers to access premium entertainment when, where and how they want,” said EPIX President and CEO Mark Greenberg. “Movies have been a key driver of every new entertainment platform and we are excited to tap the power of movies to engage online viewers and attract new subscribers for our affiliated distributors.”

Among the providers to offer the EPIX apps at launch will be Verizon FiOS, which was first to launch EPIX across multiple platforms and continues to be a leader in content distribution over advanced technologies.

“Verizon FiOS subscribers enjoy a steadily growing lineup of programming, with the freedom and convenience of services like Flex View and FiOS TV Online, as well as providers like EPIX who are making their content available on multiple devices,” said Terry Denson, vice president of content strategy and acquisition for Verizon. “We are happy that the new EPIX apps will further expand the choices and accessibility for our FiOS TV customers.”

EPIX is currently available on Google TV and will roll out additional apps in the coming weeks throughout the second quarter of 2011, delivering an assortment of new hit releases and classic titles from the studio libraries of Paramount Pictures, Lionsgate, MGM, and more, including Star Trek, Iron Man 2, Paranormal Activity 1 and 2, classic franchises like Saw, Tyler Perry’s Madea, James Bond and Rocky and EPIX original comedy, music and sports specials featuring top talent like Craig Ferguson, Usher and Lindsey Vonn.

Concluded Greenberg, “We look forward to the continued work with our distribution partners in the development of more great apps for all emerging devices and platforms to provide maximum convenience and value for current and potential subscribers alike.”

Motorola Changing policy on locked bootloaders?

Posted: 27 Apr 2011 11:48 AM PDT

We have some possibly great news here, but I wouldn’t get to excited just yet. According to some very new information it looks like Motorola will be changing their policy on locked bootloaders and will offer a solution for both end users, and unlocking for developers. Excellent! For anyone that has followed any Android news as of late, has heard about this story from one source or another. This has been a major public issue for Motorola for more than a few weeks now.

I think most of this started in January when an Atrix 4G video on youtube got some bad press after a Motorola representative said to “look elsewhere” if you wanted custom roms or an unlocked bootloader. That started the outcry that has been going on ever since, with people signing petitions on facebook and more. Finally we get a reply that might be worth reporting.

A guy named Irwin Proud from Melbourne, Australia has been all over this since getting his own Motorola Atrix and having it be completely locked down. He has since got a reply from Motorola:

"In terms of your question – we completely understand the operator requirement for security to the end user, and as well, want to support the developer communities desire to use these products as a development platform. It is our intention to enable the unlockable/relockable bootloader currently found on Motorola XOOM across our portfolio of devices starting in late 2011, where carriers and operators will allow it."

I must say, that sounds amazing! This is the same thing the Xoom has, and it was extremely easy to unlock and root. Took only a few minutes. This news is big, and new so we still don’t know much on this. I doubt any upcoming devices like the Bionic or Droid X2 will be included in the unlock/relock category just yet, but hopefully we here plenty more about this in the upcoming months. As Motorola has some of the best devices around, on the nations fastest and biggest carrier, Verizon. I’ve held off on Motorola for this reason alone, so this could be some great news if it all plays out well. We will report on this as we hear it.
