HTC Flyer preorders start Monday at Best Buy

Posted: 23 Apr 2011 11:13 PM PDT

HTC Flyer fans, you’re wait is nearly over. As we reported here, Best Buy is now making it official with preorder details and pricing. Beginning on Monday, April 25, 2011, you will be able to pre-order the WiFi version of the Android Tablet for $499 through the Best Buy website. One thing though, the Flyer will not come with Android 3.0 (Honeycomb), but has Android 2.3 (Gingerbread) preloaded instead, with HTC Sense. Google hasn’t made Honeycomb available just yet to HTC. And it may not, since we reported last month that Google is requiring separate license for the Honeycomb OS and is blocking updates from all Android 2.x tablets.

It’s unclear if Google just isn’t ready to release the OS to HTC or if licensing issues will prevent it. But that would be a blow to what has been a very hyped up tablet which users are waiting to get their hands on. In the same article mentioned above, however, it says that only certain models of the HTC Flyer will be prevented from getting a Honeycomb update. So it may prove wise to wait on ordering until the situation clears itself up.

The HTC Flyer is a unique design which goes back to using a Stylus thanks to it’s Scribe technology. It’s power by a single core 1.5GHz Qualcomm processor, and a 7-inch screen with 1024 x 600 resolution. It can store plenty of data on it’s 16GB of internal storage, which can be boosted thanks to it’s microSD card slot. The Flyer will be in stores by May 9th.

LG G2X users reporting rebooting issues

Posted: 23 Apr 2011 09:16 PM PDT

Users who have picked up the LG G2X at T-Mobile USA are reporting random freezes or reboots from the handset. Removing the battery or performing a soft reset is not solving the issue. And a full on hard reset does little to solve it either. As you may recall from our post last week, this isn’t the first time the G2X has been acting quirky. In that story, we reported screen bleeding affecting screen colors, especially on a black screen. Now this issue and it can only point to one thing …

Go Fever. Back in the 60s during the Apollo program, the ongoing worry was being so eager to get there that problems and defects were overlooked. And with the wild west competition for getting out the latest and greatest handset and riding the wave of hype and interest, it can often be easy to release a product first, and fix the bugs later in a firmware update. But quality control issues can also kill the wave, causing future users to look elsewhere.

Fortunately, G2X users have been able to exchange the defective handsets for another. But if it’s a design issue, it’s not really clear what good that does. And if it’s a software issue, then they’ll have to wait for that update. Then again, it isn’t happening to every G2X user just yet, so only time will tell what the answer is. Stay tuned.

Screen capture comes to the LG Optimus and G2X

Posted: 23 Apr 2011 03:46 PM PDT

One thing that has been missing from the Android platform has been a fairly simply method to do screen captures. With the iPhone, for example, users only need to hold down the sleep button while clicking the hold button. Do it right and you’re taking a picture of your screen. That function has been missing from the Android platform and LG has decided to do something about it with the Optimus and G2X.

Before LG did something about it, users had to usually root their phone and install a third party screen capture app. Or connect to USB and jump through a few . But now, all users need to do with the LG is to hold down the power/sleep button and then the home button, much like the iPhone. Users can then see the screen capture in a special folder named for it. Nice and easy.

In addition to screen capture, there’s a lot to like about these two cool phones. For the LG Optimus 2X, for instance, it’s 8 Megpixel rear facing camera has a burst mode – it takes 6 consecutive pictures. That’s really nice for action shots and can come in handy with overactive kids. It also has 1080p support for playback. A good phone for someone looking for it to do double duty capturing those Kodak moments. Check out our full walk through and hands on here.

Then there’s the LG G2X, which not only has one of the highest resolution cameras going, but also 8 gigs of RAM, a 1 Ghz Dual Core Tegra 2 processor, 4G support, and 1080p video recording with DIVX support. It’s a pure Google experience, running Android 2.2 (Froyo) with no overlays, which is always a good thing. Another cool feature is it’s DTS Ultra Mobile audio technology for a surround sound experience. This phone is loaded. Check out our hands on here.
