Droid Bionic Shall Launch Around The Same Time As Motorola Xoom’s LTE Posted: 28 Apr 2011 06:08 PM PDT
During their quarterly financial report, Motorola’s CEO Sanjay Jha mentioned the Xoom’s LTE launch has been delayed until sometime around the summer solstice. Turns out this is the same time we will finally see the release of the recently rehashed, Droid Bionic. While answering questions as to what caused the delay, Sanjay attempted to beat around the bush but eventually mentioned it had more to do with Verizon’s LTE not being up to snuff than anything on their end. Seems as if the company wants to wait a few more months for LTE to roll out in a few more cities before going full steam ahead with their LTE devices. Sanjay would also like you to know that the Xoom launch was considered a “success” with nearly 250,000 units shipped in the first quarter. Motorola seems to be doing quite well for themselves, with mobile device revenues up 30% from last year. This might have had a little something to do with the 4.1 million smartphones they managed to sell around the world. [Via DroidLife] |
Google Being Sued for $50 Million Over Storing Location Information Posted: 28 Apr 2011 05:30 PM PDT
You may have heard the buzz around the blogosphere on how the iPhone tracks your every move and how some owners are trying to cash in on this new information by taking Apple to court. Well, it looks like Google will be facing something very similar. Most Android users remember back when they setup their phone that they were given the option to provide Google with anonymous location data. Let me say that again, option. Detroit News is reporting that 2 women have filed a $50 million dollar class-action lawsuit against big “G,” demanding that Google stop offering Android handsets to people that track their location. Although Google assures us this information is kept anonymous, apparently each phone has unique identifiers that could potentially lead Google or some government agency to find out where you live and where you work. This information could also be obtained, if needed, via subpoena or national security letter. First off, in the complaint, these women were more concerned with someone using this information to stalk them (really?). Second, Google doesn’t make handsets. They make software. I don’t know if they could even be required to pull every handset off the market? Would make more sense to demand Google offer an update to the software or something along those lines. Third, its an opt-in service. You don’t have to give Google this kind of information even if the information may not be as anonymous as you might think. Something tells me these women have no idea what they’re talking about and most likely refer to the Android OS as “Droid.” But what do you guys think? Is this law suit just another way for someone to make a quick buck? Or is all this location information a genuine concern that should be addressed in court? [Via Detroit News] |
Verizon Brochure Touts Netflix on the LG Revolution Posted: 28 Apr 2011 03:28 PM PDT
Ever since CES the plan has been to launch Netflix with streaming video alongside the LG Revolution . Verizon also said Skype with Video would launch alongside the HTC Thunderbolt That never happened. Needless to say, no one is all that confident that Netflix will actually be ready for the launch of the Revolution. If it makes you feel any better, a new Verizon brochure is showing off the Revolution and boasting “high-quality video streaming by Netflix.” This is where I must remind everyone that Verizon also initially advertised Skype with Video for the Thunderbolt. Yeah, that’s the Skype with Video that didn’t actually launch and still hasn’t been released officially. Both applications have been leaked and we did get some time with the Netflix app at MWC. Whether this translates to the app actually being ready on time is another story. [via Android Central] |
Google Announces Video Chat for Android 2.3 Devices, Says ‘Surprise is Still to Come’ Posted: 28 Apr 2011 02:12 PM PDT
Google is launching an update to Android Gingerbread, version 2.3.4. But the big news? The update brings video chat via GTalk to Android smartphones. This is the same functionality we first saw implemented in Honeycomb, and allows any Android phone with the proper version of Gingerbread to conduct a video chat with anyone using a compatible (Honeycomb) Android tablet, their smartphone, or GTalk on their desktop. It works effortlessly, displaying an icon next to those on your friends list who are available for video chat. Tap the icon and you are on your way to face-to-face conversation. The main caveat is that the update is currently only rolling out to the Nexus S There is no telling when Android 2.3.4 with video chat will reach other devices, many of which have yet to receive any taste of Gingerbread at all. Guess it pays to have Google’s baby in your hands. Oh, and this sounds like the perfect candidate for that surprise the Google Nexus Twitter teased us about earlier, right? Wrong. According to a new tweet, the surprise is still to come. We continue to wonder what it could be… [via Google] |
Motorola Reports 250,000 XOOM Tablets Shipped, Increase in Net Revenue Posted: 28 Apr 2011 01:53 PM PDT
After much speculation from analysts, Motorola has finally revealed the total number of XOOM tablets shipped during the first quarter of 2011 as part of their quarterly earning report. Though it was recently speculated that as few as 25,000 XOOMs may have shipped, Motorola has confirmed the actual number to be 250,000. That number makes up a small fraction of the 9.3 million total mobile devices shipped in the first quarter. Of those, 4.1 million were smartphones. That is a growth from the 2.3 million smartphones shipped a year earlier, and coincides with a 22 percent net revenue increase from Q1 2010. Motorola posted $3 billion in revenues, with $2.1 billion earned through mobile device sales. See the full report below.

NPD: Android Share Drops for First Time in Two Years with Launch of Verizon iPhone Posted: 28 Apr 2011 01:02 PM PDT
According to NPD’s newly published quarterly report on US smartphone sales, the Verizon iPhone may have had a bigger impact on smartphone sales than was initially thought. The availability of the device on multiple carriers was enough to push Apple up the ranks to become the third-largest handset brand in the United States. The rise pushed Apple’s overall smartphone market share up 9 points to 28 percent. The gain in ground had adverse effects on Android’s share, which saw a drop for the first time sine Q2 2009. Still holding the number one position, Android dropped 3 points to settle at 50 percent share for Q1 2011. Without a few more months of data under out belts, it’s hard to say whether the drop is a minor hiccup or a sign of things to come. A recent Nielsen report showed that a majority of consumers were looking at Android as the preferred OS of their next smartphone. But Android’s meteoric growth can’t be sustained forever. If not now, it will eventually slow and level off. One thing we don’t see happening, however, is Android dropping the top position any time soon. [via NPD] |
Which Android Version Are You Running? Posted: 28 Apr 2011 12:29 PM PDT
Cupcake, Donut, Eclair, Froyo, Gingerbread. Are you feeling hungry yet? Android’s codenames make each version tastier than the last, but as we all know those updates don’t always find their way to handsets as quickly as we’d like. This has left a platform that many call fragmented, a problem that has long been pointed to by developers as one of the main reasons they feel hesitant about creating games and apps for Android devices. Google has defended the platform, shying away from using terms like fragmentation and insisting on calling handsets with older versions of Android “legacy” devices, but the fact remains that not every handset is on a level playing field at the OS level. Sure, Google releases their own statistics quite regularly giving a top-down look at the breakup of Android OS versions among devices, but anticipation for yet another update at Google I/O — rumored to go under codename Ice Cream – has us itching to run a poll of our own. So sound off below and let us know the Android version you are currently running on your handset — stock, ROM, or otherwise. (Try to only answer Honeycomb if it your primary Android OS). |
Motorola Droid 3 Screen Assembly Arrives at Reseller, Reps Front Facing Camera Posted: 28 Apr 2011 11:23 AM PDT
Global Direct Parts, a reseller of OEM components for mobile devices, is now listing the Motorola DROID 3 screen assembly for sale, complete with pictures of the LCD and casing. You can’t actually buy the item as the site lists it as out of stock and by all accounts the launch of the Droid 3 is still a few months away, but the listing provides us with a clear look at what will make up the top half of the latest in the Droid lineup, complete with ample room for a front facing camera. The product page goes into details about some of the other differences we can expect, from everything from the location of the screen’s digitizer to the re-arranging of the sensor array and speaker to accommodate the FFC. A larger, 4-inch screen takes the place of the 3.7-inch display found on the Droid and Droid 2. Gone is the bump out beneath the screen, creating a more flush design with relocated capacitive navigation keys. It is strange that the part is listed for resale so far before the expected late summer release date, but then again it is also strange that the handset is associated with the Targa codename. Up until now we have heard Targa to be associated with a device that may take over as the Droid Bionic. We wouldn’t put too much stock in the use of the codename here. Google Nexus Twitter Teases Surprise Coming Today Posted: 28 Apr 2011 10:54 AM PDT
Just what could the Google Nexus team have in store for us today? A tweet going out to their official account about an hour ago teases a surprise is in store. We know the Nexus S 4G is coming to Sprint on May 8th, so we doubt the news relates to that particular announcement. Could the Nexus S be getting picked up by another carrier? AT&T, perhaps? Is there an Android update awaiting owners of Google’s second love child with a top handset manufacturer? Or maybe the surprise won’t be so surprising at all and we are reaching too far here. Your guess is as good as mine, as Nexus-related rumors have been pretty quiet these past few weeks. What do you think will be announced? [via Twitter | Thanks, Jack!] |
Motorola XOOM Camera Connection Kit is Now Available Posted: 28 Apr 2011 09:18 AM PDT
Motorola’s made available their Camera Connection Kit for the XOOM. It’s nothing but a short cable that’ll let you transfer your camera’s content over to the internal storage inside your tablet. I’m not sure if I’d spend $20 on this thing considering how easy it is to transfer images to the XOOM, but it may be convenient for some of you. This one’s only available through Verizon customer service, though, so give them a call and let them know that you want whatever is tied to the following SKU - MOTMZ600ADPKIT. [Thanks Jeffery!] |

New Galaxy S II Benchmark Shows 3,500 in Quadrant Posted: 28 Apr 2011 08:52 AM PDT
The last time we saw the benchmarks for the Samsung Galaxy S2 they barely eclipsed 3,000 on Quadrant. One of our readers – who happens to be the proud new owner of a Galaxy S II – took his for a quick spin, too, and managed to get a whopping 3,500. (With scores averaging in the 3,300 range for the most part.) We’re not sure if Quadrant has been updated to more accurately score the Galaxy S II or if Samsung optimized the software for this thing right before launch, but we’re happy regardless. And we hear real world performance lives up to any benchmark score you could ever achieve. [Thanks Jonathan!] |
Rogers’ Xperia Play and Xperia Arc Now Available Posted: 28 Apr 2011 07:11 AM PDT
It’s been a long time coming – many of you have had to suffer through countless leaks with no end in sight – but one of those leaks mentioned a date and that date stuck. Rogers has officially let loose the Sony Ericsson Xperia Play and Xperia Arc as of today. Both devices can be had for the same price on a three year contract – $100. And if you don’t want to be tied to Rogers that long, you can grab it up for a cool $550. (I won’t even mention the one- and two-year deals as they’re not worth mentioning. Head over to Rogers’ site (Arc, Play) to order yours today. |

The folks at Samsung are celebrating the launch of the Samsung Galaxy S2 in their home town of Seoul right now and the president of Samsung Mobile – JK Shin – had some words to say. The most interesting thing to come out of his mouth was that the Samsung Galaxy S II would be launched in 120 regions and that they expect to sell 10 million units by the end of this year. Sounds a lot like the Galaxy S doesn’t it? (And – if you didn’t know – they sold 14 million Galaxy S phones in just under a year.) Let’s see if the Galaxy S II will meet the same expectations that the original met. [Unwired View] |
