Droid Bionic Shall Launch Around The Same Time As Motorola Xoom’s LTE

Posted: 28 Apr 2011 06:08 PM PDT

This image has no alt text

During their quarterly financial report, Motorola’s CEO Sanjay Jha mentioned the Xoom’s LTE launch has been delayed until sometime around the summer solstice. Turns out this is the same time we will finally see the release of the recently rehashed, Droid Bionic. While answering questions as to what caused the delay, Sanjay attempted to beat around the bush but eventually mentioned it had more to do with Verizon’s LTE not being up to snuff than anything on their end. Seems as if the company wants to wait a few more months for LTE to roll out in a few more cities before going full steam ahead with their LTE devices.

Sanjay would also like you to know that the Xoom launch was considered a “success” with nearly 250,000 units shipped in the first quarter. Motorola seems to be doing quite well for themselves, with mobile device revenues up 30% from last year. This might have had a little something to do with the 4.1 million smartphones they managed to sell around the world.

Google Being Sued for $50 Million Over Storing Location Information

Posted: 28 Apr 2011 05:30 PM PDT

This image has no alt text

You may have heard the buzz around the blogosphere on how the iPhone tracks your every move and how some owners are trying to cash in on this new information by taking Apple to court. Well, it looks like Google will be facing something very similar. Most Android users remember back when they setup their phone that they were given the option to provide Google with anonymous location data. Let me say that again, option.

Detroit News is reporting that 2 women have filed a $50 million dollar class-action lawsuit against big “G,” demanding that Google stop offering Android handsets to people that track their location. Although Google assures us this information is kept anonymous, apparently each phone has unique identifiers that could potentially lead Google or some government agency to find out where you live and where you work. This information could also be obtained, if needed, via subpoena or national security letter.

First off, in the complaint, these women were more concerned with someone using this information to stalk them (really?). Second, Google doesn’t make handsets. They make software. I don’t know if they could even be required to pull every handset off the market? Would make more sense to demand Google offer an update to the software or something along those lines. Third, its an opt-in service. You don’t have to give Google this kind of information even if the information may not be as anonymous as you might think.

Something tells me these women have no idea what they’re talking about and most likely refer to the Android OS as “Droid.” But what do you guys think? Is this law suit just another way for someone to make a quick buck? Or is all this location information a genuine concern that should be addressed in court?

Verizon Brochure Touts Netflix on the LG Revolution

Posted: 28 Apr 2011 03:28 PM PDT

This image has no alt text

Ever since CES the plan has been to launch Netflix with streaming video alongside the LG Revolution . Verizon also said Skype with Video would launch alongside the HTC Thunderbolt That never happened. Needless to say, no one is all that confident that Netflix will actually be ready for the launch of the Revolution. If it makes you feel any better, a new Verizon brochure is showing off the Revolution and boasting “high-quality video streaming by Netflix.”

This is where I must remind everyone that Verizon also initially advertised Skype with Video for the Thunderbolt. Yeah, that’s the Skype with Video that didn’t actually launch and still hasn’t been released officially. Both applications have been leaked and we did get some time with the Netflix app at MWC. Whether this translates to the app actually being ready on time is another story.

Google Announces Video Chat for Android 2.3 Devices, Says ‘Surprise is Still to Come’

Posted: 28 Apr 2011 02:12 PM PDT

Google is launching an update to Android Gingerbread, version 2.3.4. But the big news? The update brings video chat via GTalk to Android smartphones. This is the same functionality we first saw implemented in Honeycomb, and allows any Android phone with the proper version of Gingerbread to conduct a video chat with anyone using a compatible (Honeycomb) Android tablet, their smartphone, or GTalk on their desktop.

It works effortlessly, displaying an icon next to those on your friends list who are available for video chat. Tap the icon and you are on your way to face-to-face conversation.

The main caveat is that the update is currently only rolling out to the Nexus S There is no telling when Android 2.3.4 with video chat will reach other devices, many of which have yet to receive any taste of Gingerbread at all. Guess it pays to have Google’s baby in your hands.

Oh, and this sounds like the perfect candidate for that surprise the Google Nexus Twitter teased us about earlier, right? Wrong. According to a new tweet, the surprise is still to come. We continue to wonder what it could be…

Motorola Reports 250,000 XOOM Tablets Shipped, Increase in Net Revenue

After much speculation from analysts, Motorola has finally revealed the total number of XOOM tablets shipped during the first quarter of 2011 as part of their quarterly earning report. Though it was recently speculated that as few as 25,000 XOOMs may have shipped, Motorola has confirmed the actual number to be 250,000. That number makes up a small fraction of the 9.3 million total mobile devices shipped in the first quarter. Of those, 4.1 million were smartphones.

That is a growth from the 2.3 million smartphones shipped a year earlier, and coincides with a 22 percent net revenue increase from Q1 2010. Motorola posted $3 billion in revenues, with $2.1 billion earned through mobile device sales. See the full report below.

Use of Non-GAAP Financial Information

In addition to the GAAP results included in this presentation, Motorola Mobility also has included non-GAAP measurements of results. Motorola Mobility has provided these non-GAAP measurements to help investors better understand Motorola Mobility’s core operating performance, enhance comparisons of Motorola Mobility’s core operating performance from period to period, and allow better comparisons of Motorola Mobility’s operating performance to that of its competitors. Among other things, the Company’s management uses these operating results, excluding the identified items, to evaluate the performance of its businesses and to evaluate results relative to certain incentive compensation targets. Management uses operating results, excluding these items, because it believes this measurement enables it to make better period-to-period evaluations of the financial performance of its core business operations. The non-GAAP measurements are intended only as a supplement to the comparable GAAP measurements and the Company compensates for the limitations inherent in the use of non-GAAP measurements by using GAAP measures in conjunction with the non-GAAP measurements. As a result, investors should consider these non-GAAP measurements in addition to, and not in substitution for or as superior to, measurements of financial performance prepared in accordance with GAAP.

Highlighted items: The Company has excluded the effects of highlighted items (and any material reversals of highlighted items recorded in prior periods) from its non-GAAP operating expenses and net income measurements because the Company believes that these historical items do not reflect expected future operating earnings or expenses and do not contribute to a meaningful evaluation of the Company’s current operating performance or comparisons to the Company’s past operating performance.

Stock-based compensation expense: The Company has excluded stock-based compensation expense from its non-GAAP operating expenses and net income measurements. Although stock-based compensation is a key incentive offered to our employees and the Company believes such compensation contributed to the revenue earned during the periods presented and also believes it will contribute to the generation of future period revenues - the Company continues to evaluate its performance excluding stock-based compensation expense primarily because it represents a significant non-cash expense. Stock-based compensation expense will recur in future periods.

Intangible assets amortization expense: The Company has excluded intangible assets amortization expense from its non-GAAP operating expenses and net income measurements, primarily because it represents a significant non-cash expense and because the Company evaluates its performance excluding intangible assets amortization expense. Amortization of intangible assets is consistent in amount and frequency but is significantly affected by the timing and size of the Company’s acquisitions. Investors should note that the use of intangible assets contributed to the Company’s revenues earned during the periods presented and will contribute to the Company’s future period revenues as well. Intangible assets amortization expense will recur in future periods. Details of the above items and reconciliations of the non-GAAP measurements to the corresponding GAAP measurements can be found at the end of this press release.

NPD: Android Share Drops for First Time in Two Years with Launch of Verizon iPhone

Posted: 28 Apr 2011 01:02 PM PDT

This image has no alt text

According to NPD’s newly published quarterly report on US smartphone sales, the Verizon iPhone may have had a bigger impact on smartphone sales than was initially thought. The availability of the device on multiple carriers was enough to push Apple up the ranks to become the third-largest handset brand in the United States. The rise pushed Apple’s overall smartphone market share up 9 points to 28 percent. The gain in ground had adverse effects on Android’s share, which saw a drop for the first time sine Q2 2009. Still holding the number one position, Android dropped 3 points to settle at 50 percent share for Q1 2011.

Without a few more months of data under out belts, it’s hard to say whether the drop is a minor hiccup or a sign of things to come. A recent Nielsen report showed that a majority of consumers were looking at Android as the preferred OS of their next smartphone. But Android’s meteoric growth can’t be sustained forever. If not now, it will eventually slow and level off. One thing we don’t see happening, however, is Android dropping the top position any time soon.

Which Android Version Are You Running?

Posted: 28 Apr 2011 12:29 PM PDT

This image has no alt text

Cupcake, Donut, Eclair, Froyo, Gingerbread. Are you feeling hungry yet? Android’s codenames make each version tastier than the last, but as we all know those updates don’t always find their way to handsets as quickly as we’d like. This has left a platform that many call fragmented, a problem that has long been pointed to by developers as one of the main reasons they feel hesitant about creating games and apps for Android devices. Google has defended the platform, shying away from using terms like fragmentation and insisting on calling handsets with older versions of Android “legacy” devices, but the fact remains that not every handset is on a level playing field at the OS level.

Sure, Google releases their own statistics quite regularly giving a top-down look at the breakup of Android OS versions among devices, but anticipation for yet another update at Google I/O — rumored to go under codename Ice Cream – has us itching to run a poll of our own. So sound off below and let us know the Android version you are currently running on your handset — stock, ROM, or otherwise. (Try to only answer Honeycomb if it your primary Android OS).

Motorola Droid 3 Screen Assembly Arrives at Reseller, Reps Front Facing Camera

Posted: 28 Apr 2011 11:23 AM PDT

Global Direct Parts, a reseller of OEM components for mobile devices, is now listing the Motorola DROID 3 screen assembly for sale, complete with pictures of the LCD and casing. You can’t actually buy the item as the site lists it as out of stock and by all accounts the launch of the Droid 3 is still a few months away, but the listing provides us with a clear look at what will make up the top half of the latest in the Droid lineup, complete with ample room for a front facing camera.

The product page goes into details about some of the other differences we can expect, from everything from the location of the screen’s digitizer to the re-arranging of the sensor array and speaker to accommodate the FFC. A larger, 4-inch screen takes the place of the 3.7-inch display found on the Droid and Droid 2. Gone is the bump out beneath the screen, creating a more flush design with relocated capacitive navigation keys.

It is strange that the part is listed for resale so far before the expected late summer release date, but then again it is also strange that the handset is associated with the Targa codename. Up until now we have heard Targa to be associated with a device that may take over as the Droid Bionic. We wouldn’t put too much stock in the use of the codename here.

Google Nexus Twitter Teases Surprise Coming Today

Just what could the Google Nexus team have in store for us today? A tweet going out to their official account about an hour ago teases a surprise is in store. We know the Nexus S 4G is coming to Sprint on May 8th, so we doubt the news relates to that particular announcement. Could the Nexus S be getting picked up by another carrier? AT&T, perhaps? Is there an Android update awaiting owners of Google’s second love child with a top handset manufacturer? Or maybe the surprise won’t be so surprising at all and we are reaching too far here. Your guess is as good as mine, as Nexus-related rumors have been pretty quiet these past few weeks. What do you think will be announced?

Motorola XOOM Camera Connection Kit is Now Available

Motorola’s made available their Camera Connection Kit for the XOOM. It’s nothing but a short cable that’ll let you transfer your camera’s content over to the internal storage inside your tablet. I’m not sure if I’d spend $20 on this thing considering how easy it is to transfer images to the XOOM, but it may be convenient for some of you. This one’s only available through Verizon customer service, though, so give them a call and let them know that you want whatever is tied to the following SKU - MOTMZ600ADPKIT. [Thanks Jeffery!]

Shazam for Android Update Brings Social Networking Features, Unlimited Tagging for Free Until 2012

Posted: 28 Apr 2011 09:04 AM PDT

This image has no alt text

The folks at Shazam have just hit us up to let us know that the free version of their application now features unlimited tagging until January 2012. This was possible thanks to a three month sponsorship that eBay and Shazam have penned. Sweet! And as a bonus, they’re introducing a new feature that’ll feed to you a stream of songs your friends have tagged in order to facilitate easier discovery of music. Take a look at the full slate of changes below and head to the Android market if you’d like to jump on this one as soon as you can.

Shazam Launches "Unlimited Tagging" Globally in Free App for Android

First of its Kind Sponsorship with eBay and

Facebook® Integration with Shazam Friends makes Discovering and Sharing Music Effortless

London, UK - 28 April 2011 – Shazam®, the world’s leading mobile discovery company, today announced a major update to its Shazam App for Android which brings with it two exciting new features: unlimited tagging sponsored by eBay for all Shazamers using the Shazam Free App and "Shazam Friends", a real-time feed within the App of songs that Facebook friends have tagged, creating a continuously updating list for Shazamers to discover and share new music with their friends.

This is the first exclusive App sponsorship deal agreed by eBay anywhere in the world, and the first time Shazam has selected a partner to provide free services to their customers.

Alex Musil, Executive Vice President of Product Marketing at Shazam said, "eBay is a brand people know and love, and we’re excited to announce them as our exclusive sponsor, bringing all Android Shazamers the benefit of unlimited music discovery." Musil continued, "In addition, we’re pleased to offer Android Shazamers access to the Shazam Friends social feature, allowing them to share their music discoveries with their Facebook friends and family while discovering exciting new music and content themselves in a continuously updating feed."

This update of the Shazam Free App - which usually comes with five tags per month – will enable new and existing users to receive free unlimited Shazaming until January 1, 2012.

Steve Yankovich, Vice President of eBay Mobile said, "Like eBay, Shazam connects consumers with the content, products and information they want.  We are excited to sponsor Shazam’s Android App offering millions of consumers the chance to do even more of what they love, while expanding their ability to Shazam and share the music they’re most passionate about."

Shazam Friends is easy to set up and, upon updating the App, a new "Friends" tab will appear.  Once a Shazamer logs into their Facebook account and confirms they would like to connect and share with friends, they can:

·         Browse all of their friends’ tags, watch music videos, read reviews, access biographies and get artist tour information

·         See all recent tags from a particular friend in one list

·         Add friends’ tags to their Shazam tag list

·         Purchase the track

·         Where available, use streaming services to play the song from their playlist

·         Post tags to Facebook and Twitter, add comments, and give their friends a chance to comment

·         Encourage friends to join them in using Shazam Friends

Shazam Friends is already available in both Shazam Free and Encore Apps on Apple’s iOS devices and now on Android devices. Shazamers can manage the sharing of their tags and decide to stop sharing at any time, while still being able to see their friends’ tags. For two friends to see each other’s tags, they both have to connect their Facebook accounts to Shazam.

New Galaxy S II Benchmark Shows 3,500 in Quadrant

The last time we saw the benchmarks for the Samsung Galaxy S2 they barely eclipsed 3,000 on Quadrant. One of our readers – who happens to be the proud new owner of a Galaxy S II – took his for a quick spin, too, and managed to get a whopping 3,500. (With scores averaging in the 3,300 range for the most part.) We’re not sure if Quadrant has been updated to more accurately score the Galaxy S II or if Samsung optimized the software for this thing right before launch, but we’re happy regardless. And we hear real world performance lives up to any benchmark score you could ever achieve. [Thanks Jonathan!]

Samsung Galaxy S II Launching in 120 Regions, 10 Million Units Expected to Ship in 2011 [This Sounds Familiar]

The folks at Samsung are celebrating the launch of the Samsung Galaxy S2 in their home town of Seoul right now and the president of Samsung Mobile – JK Shin – had some words to say. The most interesting thing to come out of his mouth was that the Samsung Galaxy S II would be launched in 120 regions and that they expect to sell 10 million units by the end of this year. Sounds a lot like the Galaxy S doesn’t it? (And – if you didn’t know – they sold 14 million Galaxy S phones in just under a year.) Let’s see if the Galaxy S II will meet the same expectations that the original met. [Unwired View]
