Surprise, surprise: Google Talk gets video chat on the Nexus S (Updated) Posted: 28 Apr 2011 03:48 PM PDT A few hours ago Google tweeted they had a surprise for us. They’ve now revealed that surprise, and no they’re not buying Sprint. The big surprise is that Google Talk is getting video chat support. Hold on, there’s a catch though. You won’t be able to just download the app from the Market, instead you’ll get the new app with the 2.3.4 update Google is going to release in the coming weeks. Huh? Put simply, Nexus One and Nexus S users will get Android 2.3.4 in the coming weeks, and the update has a new version of Google Talk with video chat support. This is of course irrelevant to the rest of the world which doesn’t own a Nexus phone. Why Google didn’t just release the Google Talk app through the Market? It beats me. It’s like they thought “What’s the best way to get this awesome feature to the least amount of people? Oh I know, release it with an OS update most people won’t get until next year.” The app works just like you’d think it would. If a friend is available for video chat, you’ll see a camera icon next to it, tap it and away you go. The Android 2.3.4 update will also bring some bug fixes for Nexus One phones. But that’s not all, Google also tweeted that one more surprise is still to come. What could it be? Let me guess, they’ll release Google Music just for Nexus S owners who have dark hair, own two dogs, and are left-handed. UPDATE: Google just tweeted the other surprise and it’s a — drum roll, please — Twitter Challenge. The winner gets a Nexus S. Yay. Gallery |
Verizon 4G is working again, but where is the Samsung Droid Charge? Posted: 28 Apr 2011 12:55 PM PDT
Verizon’s second 4G LTE smartphone, the Droid Charge, was scheduled for release today, along with the HTC Droid Incredible 2 and the Casio G’zOne Commando. The 3G devices are now up at Verizon’s website available for purchase (Hell, even the white iPhone is available), but there is still no word on the whereabouts of the Droid Charge. The fact that the 3G devices are now available and the Droid Charge is not, leads us to believe that Verizon is delaying the Charge’s release date, most likely due to their 4G outage. Well off course, it would leave no good impression to walk up to a Verizon store, advertising the Droid Charge’s blazing 4G speeds, only to find out that the network is having issues, and the device is stuck in 3G data speeds (maybe even 1x). Now that Verizon has announced that their 4G LTE network is working again, let’s hope that they will release the Samsung Droid Charge soon. Stay tuned for more details, and let us know what you think. Are you disappointed with Verizon? Happy to have 4G back? Where/are you planning to purchase this device? |
Samsung Galaxy S II released in South Korea, spreading to 120 countries soon Posted: 28 Apr 2011 12:43 PM PDT After the official announcement of the Samsung Galaxy S II at Mobile World Congress, the device quickly became one of the most anticipated Android phones of 2011, and Samsung has made sure that we stay hyped up about it. There was actually a rumor being spread that the device would be delayed and improved, but Samsung clarified the issue shortly afterward, stating that the device would be launched on April (as planned), and then headed to other countries "according to the local launch timetable." Not only has Samsung been teasing us with rumors and announcements, but they have even released a series of commercials, further convincing us that they are keeping their word on the release, and sure enough, today is a great day if you have been waiting for this device. Just like its predecessor, the Samsung Galaxy S, we expect variations of this device coming to every major carrier in the U.S., and though it is still not here, it is very close. Samsung is holding a media event in South Korea as a celebration of the Galaxy S II’s launch date, and the Galaxy S II is now officially on its way to 120 countries (Of course, we are one of them!), and 140 carriers worldwide, so we should be getting it soon! Oh, and just a small detail, it is expected that Samsung will ship about 10 MILLION units in 2011! If 120 countries and 140 carriers is not enough information for you, our friends over at TmoNews have also discovered a couple pictures proving that the device might be coming T-Mobile. One of the pictures comes from Adobe.com, while the other is from an unknown secret tipster (Who claims to be using the Samsung Galaxy S II in T-Mobile’s network). Though neither of those are completely reliable sources, it is something to get our hopes up and consider for the meanwhile, so click on the thumbnails right below to check out the evidence. GalleryThe Samsung Galaxy S II is expected to be among the best high-end Android smartphones (if not the best), with specs that include a 1.2 GHz dual-core processor, Android 2.3 Gingerbread, a 4.27 Super AMOLED Plus display (800×480), and 1 GB of RAM. Rejoice, power-hungry Android enthusiasts, because the Samsung Galaxy S II is now near, and you will soon be able to put your hands all over it! Are you waiting for this baby? What do you think of it? |
Android tee blowout, five tees at $15 Posted: 28 Apr 2011 12:00 PM PDT I haven’t figured out at which point we decided it was necessary to display our choice of phone operating system proudly across our chest, but for those of you so inclined (and that includes myself), I’ve got some good news. I got a message last night that an old friend of the site is having an inventory blowout sale on a handful of the best selling Android tees of all time. All total there are five different designs on the block, with all tees for sale at $15 (originally $19). If you’re looking to snag a hoodie (in case you’re still living in some horrible climate), they are down to $22. All designs are printed on high quality American Apparel stock. You can find each tee on its own domain: http://explodedandy.com, http://unstoppableandy.com, http://andyversus.com, http://isteamandy.com, and http://androidstuff.com. If you’re curious, this is the same guy that printed our shirts (Exploded Andy Limited Edition, the entire And Me Artist Series), so the quality is impeccable. Like I said, I know a smartphone themed tee isn’t exactly everybody’s bag, I just thought the super nerds amongst us would appreciate notice. |
Google has a Nexus-related surprise for us, we have no idea what it is Posted: 28 Apr 2011 11:37 AM PDT Oh Google, you big tease! If being less than two weeks from Google I/O isn’t enough to get your heart racing, Google has gone ahead and tweeted that they have a surprise for us today. The tweet came from the Google Nexus Twitter account so we’re guessing the surprise is Nexus-related. I can only think of one thing they could announce related to the Nexus S, its availability from more carriers. AT&T? Who knows? Other than that, I have no idea what they could announce, which makes it even more exciting. Could it be a free, ad-supported Nexus? Google is buying Sprint? Are they finally turning on Skynet? All very possible scenarios. With that said, we’ll probably know pretty soon, and as soon as we do we’ll tell you all about it. Meanwhile, keep refreshing that Google Nexus Twitter page like the rest of us. UPDATE: Google Voice integration with Sprint just went live, could this be? Hopefully not. |
The Wi-Fi HTC Flyer stops by the FCC Posted: 28 Apr 2011 10:22 AM PDT Has anyone been wondering where HTC was planning on sticking that mandatory FCC label on the Wi-Fi HTC Flyer? The image above should give you all the details you need on that subject. Now, on to the more important part of this story. The FCC has finally given the Wi-Fi HTC Flyer their stamp of approved which means that Best Buy could start selling the tablet at any time. Pre-sales for HTC's first Android tablet kicked off earlier this week at Best Buy stores across the country, but we have a feeling that there will be plenty of inventory to go around once the Wi-Fi Flyer goes on sale. Many Android enthusiasts are not happy that the HTC Flyer will launch with Android 2.3 rather than the tablet certified Android 3.0 (Honeycomb). Though Gingerbread may not be ideal for tablet use, HTC's customized Sense user interface has been completely redesigned to take advantage of the Flyer's 7-inch display. HTC has stated that the Flyer will be getting a Honeycomb update later this summer, but with all the bad press surrounding Honeycomb, we're hoping HTC may choose to jump to Ice Cream once it's made available. Will any of you be passing on the HTC Flyer simply because it is not running Honeycomb or is the $499 price point simply too high for a 7-inch Android tablet? |
HTC Droid Incredible 2 now available from Verizon Posted: 28 Apr 2011 05:03 AM PDT It has been about a year (actually, it will be a year tomorrow, April 29), since the Droid Incredible impressed us with what used to be amazing specs at the time. Though our beloved Droid Incredible is still good enough to satisfy the average user, this does not defeat the fact that it is a year-old phone, and that is a lot of time in Android years. We have been hearing about the HTC Droid Incredible 2 for some months now, and it finally received its official price and release date last Tuesday (Along with the Casio G’zOne Commando). The device was confirmed to be released today, and now the HTC Droid Incredible 2 is over at Verizon’s site begging you to purchase it. The highly anticipated Droid Incredible successor can now be yours for $199.99 after a two-year contract, or the "incredible" price of just $439.99 off-contract. HTC Droid Incredible 2 Specs: As Nick Gray mentioned on his first impressions of the Droid Incredible 2, this device may not be as stunning as the Thunderbolt, but it is a great device for everyday use, and the price is also $50 lower. To learn more about the Incredible 2 check out Nick’s article, and let us know if you will be snatching up this device! What do you think of it? |
Casio G’zOne Commando now in the battlefield Posted: 28 Apr 2011 05:02 AM PDT Verizon and Casio announced the Casio G’zOne Commando last Thursday, April 26, and sure enough, you can now head over to Verizon’s site and purchase it. As expected, the device will cost you $199.99 on a two-year contract, but if you are not the commitment type, you can get it for the full retail price of $449.99 (with free overnight shipping). Casio G’zOne Commando specifications: The Commando’s specs are not impressive, but they are not horrible either, and it is something one usually has to deal with, having a rugged phone. The price may be a bit on the high end, but remember that damaging Casio’s armored soldier should be extremely hard to accomplish, since it meets Military rugged standards, so it may actually be a good investment if you are one to drop your phone often. Though the phone may not be for everyone, it is very well adapted to those who work/live in an rough environment, and it even comes with Casio G’zGear, with eight modes that will aid those with an active lifestyle. Are you guys getting your hands on this device? Let us know if you think it is worth it, afterall, you can get other devices with better specs for the same price, like the HTC Droid Incredible 2 (also released today). |
