Intel cozies up to Android, boosts shares

Posted: 22 Apr 2011 02:30 PM PDT

In their first quarter shareholder announcement, chip maker Intel announced that they would be embracing the Bot by porting the Honeycomb Android source code. The move was welcomed by Wall Street as shares of Intel rose 7.8% on the news. Intel plans to offer chips for Android based tablets within the next few months. There’s also plans for smartphones running on with Intel inside.

“We’ve received the Android code – the Honeycomb version of Android source code – from Google, and we’re actively doing the port on that,” Intel’s chief executive Paul Otellini said.

The news not only boosted the share price on Intel stock, but it also served to quash rumors that lean days were ahead for the chip manufacturer since more and more users are opting for mobile smartphones and tablets than PC purchases. By jumping into the Android pool with both feet, Intel is essentially saying “if you can’t beat em, join em.” It also gives Android device manufacturers options and competition always means faster chips sooner and lower prices. In fact, Otellini said at the announcement that Intel based smartphones were on the horizon and should be in the market within a year.

Intel shares for the first quarter rose by 29 percent to $3.16 billion. So the outlook is rosy for the chip maker who is diversifying where the public is going. But could it also mean Android may come to Intel desktops and notebooks? That would certainly be something to watch out for.

T-Mobile G-Slate gets $100 earlybird discount

Posted: 22 Apr 2011 01:32 PM PDT

It’s said that good things come to those who wait. Well, sometimes it pays to jump in early. T-Mobile is offering a $100 discount on a two year contract when users purchase the LG G-Slate and data plan before April 27th. But there’s a catch.

A few days back, we confirmed that the G-Slate was going on sale beginning April 20th. The LG G-slate is T-Mobile’s first 4G tablet running Android 3.0 (Honeycomb). It has an 8.9″multi touch screen, dual cameras including a 5MP rear facing and 2MP for video chat, and 32GB or storage on board. It’s capable of recording in 1080p HD video and can also show 3D movies.

To order, you must call T-Mobile directly at 866-464-8662. Select option 3 and use the promo code GSLATE100. Phone hours of operation are Monday-Friday 5am-8pm PT, Saturday 8am-5pm PT, and Sunday 9am-4pmPT. It isn’t clear if this is a new signup offer or if existing T-Mobile users can take advantage of the deal. But there’s no harm in trying.

We advise getting up early though as this “secret deal” is already making it’s way around the web, so there’s bound to be a lot of G-Slate fans taking advantage of it. And users should jump on it sooner, rather than later because if it gets too popular, it may get pulled since it’s now the worst kept secret on the web.

Samsung Fascinate users report Froyo update problems and solutions

Posted: 22 Apr 2011 12:56 PM PDT

Samsung Fascinate users are complaining of errors after receiving the OTA update of OS 2.2 Froyo. The error message that users are receiving is “UPDATE FAILED or INCOMPLETE. reason: IP_PREVIOUS_UPDATE_FAILED” and appears to be affecting users with a Fascinate that is either rooted, has a previous update that failed to complete, or has a corrupted system directory. Users have tried everything from a hard reset to removing the battery with no help in clearing the error. But thanks to a smart Fascinate user, there’s a workaround.

Here’s the solution offered: First thing, as always, if you can back up your data. Then download the Samsung USB drivers and then download the Samsung Fascinate D101Rom. Download Odin3 and run it. Change the phone to download mode by powering down the phone, removing the battery and plugging in the phone via USB. Do NOT use a USB Hub. This must be a direct connection to the PC.

Press and hold the volume down button until the download screen appears. Connect to Odin and look in the ID:COM section for a port number. Select PDA and browse for the Fascinate ROM you downloaded known as DI01package3.tar. Select and hit start.

This will install the original Samsung ROM and flash the stock ROM, Kernel, modem, system files and recovery. It’ll also format the memory. Then reboot the phone with the battery installed. You’ll then have to download a 10MB file at the prompt. It’s an update to the OS. Then download and install the Froyo update again.

Course, that’s a LOT to do for someone who is a new user, so patience in waiting for a Samsung fix would be in order. You can also go to the Verizon store and request they reflash your phone for you. That way, if they mess it up, it’s on them, not you.
