HTC Moving Beyond Smartphones and Tablets

We all know HTC has been doing pretty well for themselves as of late. They’ve seen the successful launch of some of the biggest Android handsets on just about every carrier. When it comes to the Android community, HTC seems to be the handset of choice for die-hard techies, like myself. Because of their recent popularity, they’ve seen their stock rise about 33% this year and their market cap hit a whopping $33.88 billion dollars taking the top spot from Nokia.

So what’s next for the smartphone giant? Well, if the recent job posting on their site is any indication, it appears they are looking for an “automotive business development director” for North America. So it looks like we might be seeing our favorite Taiwanese company take a dive into the automobile market.

Now, before you start jumping to conclusions of a Tegra 5 powered smart-car, their job posting describes an “experienced leader in the automotive electronics industry” to “develop business in the automotive market.” This will most likely include those fancy navigation units and touch screen panels you see in all those luxury cars these days.

With the impending launch of the Sensation on T-Mobile and Evo 3D on Sprint, I think this will continue to be another great year for HTC and expect great things from them in the future.

Sprint Launching WiFi Xoom May 8th for $600

Found an interesting leak from the guys over at Spantechular showing off an internal document from Sprint advertising the WiFi only Xoom for $600 and launching on May 8th. Phandroid’s very own ninjas were quick to add validity to this claim citing, “something big” hitting the Now Network in the next few weeks.

If May 8th is sounding a little familiar to you, thats becuase it is also the same day we will see the launch of Samsung Nexus S 4G and RIM’s Blackberry Playbook (unless it sees more delays). We saw T-Mobile’s big launch day last week with the simultaneous release of the LG G2X, Samsung Sidekick 4G and LG G-Slate and it looks as if Sprint may be feeling the heat.

Carrier wars aside, I am excited to be on Sprint and I can’t help but wonder what else the new underdog might have up their sleeve for May 8th?

LG Launches Optimus Big In Korea

When we last gave you the scoop on the LG Big (I know, I had to double-take at the name) it was a full month ago and today LG announced that the phone will launch tomorrow in Korea via Uplus.

The Big is LG’s latest offering to their Android lineup, so what makes this phone worthy of it’s “Big” title? Why, the 4.3-inch Nova display of course! While not as big as Acer’s Iconia Smart, it does beat out it’s sister phone, the G2X which we saw released on T-Mobile only a few weeks ago.

The Nova screen is LG’s pride and glory when it comes to their smartphones. With deeper blacks and vibrant colors, it easily matches what you see now on SAMOLED Plus displays. Its also said to offer unrivaled battery life as an added bonus. Being a self proclaimed screen aficionado, I was lucky enough to see first-hand their new displays this year at CES with the LG Black and have to say, was quite impressed by it. I did find it strange however, that they weren’t offering the same display on the Optimus 2X but I guess you can’t have everything now, can you?

The phone will also ship with Android 2.2 Froyo and LG’s very own Touch Whiz-ish UI. The LG Big also comes with 16GB of storage, perfect for capturing all the 1080p videos you can throw at it, a 1GHz (dual-core?) processor 5MP camera and what looks like a front facing camera as well. I also noticed an optional kickstand/case available which isn’t too different from what we’ve seen LG offer for the G2X.

With the T-Mobile already nabbing up the G2X and Verizon getting the 4G LTE Revolution, I’m keeping my fingers crossed Sprint will jump on this (and pray they’ll change that dreadful name in the process).

HTC DROID Incredible 2 Unboxing [VIDEO]

We just got our hands on one DROID Incredible 2 set to be released on Verizon April 28th for $199.99. It’s a world phone that builds on the successful model that was the original DROID Incredible. It’s a big bigger with its 4 inch WVGA Super LCD display and also has a front-facing camera despite the fact that this is not a 4G phone.

Other specs include a 1GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon processor, 768MB of RAM, over 1GB of internal storage out of the box, a 16GB microSD card, a 1430 mAh battery, an 8 megapixel camera with HD video recording and dual LED flash to help in low light situations. You can expect Android 2.2 with HTC Sense 2.1 as far as software goes.

Although Verizon hasn’t confirmed it, we’re sure it’ll be getting a taste of ginger sometime down the line. What we don’t expect, however, is HTC Sense 3.0 – a heavily enhanced version of the layover found on the EVO 3D and the HTC Sensation Check the unboxing video out above and expect our full review in the coming days. In the meantime, go ahead and chat with fellow souls excited for the device’s impending release at the DROID Incredible 2 section of our forums.

Android Edges Out iPhone in Number of Free Applications Available

Posted: 27 Apr 2011 01:57 PM PDT

We can’t say this was much of a shock to us, but analytics research firm Distimo today released figures about the world’s smartphone app stores. The highlight of the report was Android’s reign in amount of free applications opposed to iPhone – 134.3 thousand opposed to 121.8 thousand. And this is all while Android still has yet to come close to the number of Apps in the app store for both tablets and phones.

It’s expected considering the nature of the Android market’s revenue model these days. More and more, developers are looking to ads and in-game purchases for revenue instead of one-time purchases at the virtual point of sale. While we’d like to believe this is because that’s truly “the Google way”, we’re sure the real reason is because  - well – a lot of Android users just don’t like paying for apps.

Android holds the number two spot for the amount of applications in its market currently, but Distimo expects the picture to change drastically at the end of the year as they forecast Android beating out the iPhone to become the number one market in terms of size. Sure, a lot of it’s junk, but a bigger number means one less marketing bulletpoint for old uncle Jobs to exploit. [via MobileCrunch]

Motorola XOOM Keyboard-Enabled Folio Case Coming

Posted: 27 Apr 2011 01:27 PM PDT

This image has no alt text

Just the other day I read one of you commenters saying that all tablet makers would rush to pair their devices to keyboards in one way or another, and it looks like Motorola is the next OEM to do just that. They’re set to introduce a folio case that has a bluetooth keyboard embedded that can be paired with the XOOM. The case wraps around the entire device when it’s closed, and although it isn’t exactly a smooth experience like the Transformer, it’s as good as it’s going to get. No word on pricing and availability just yet. [Droid-Life]

Android Rocks: Sonos S5 and Android App Unboxed & Installed

Welcome to the unboxing of the heaviest Android-related product I’ve ever had the pleasure of reviewing. When Sonos told me some goodies were on the way to review their home entertainment and music solution that leveraged Android, I was eager to see what would land on my porch.

One hugely heavy box, 2 all-in-one speakers, a Zone box, a T-Shirt, and some paperwork later I was eager to hook it all up.

It’ll take some time to perform a full review of the Sonos S5 and Sonos Android Remote App as I want to set it up and try it out in my everyday routine for a bit. From the unboxing it’s a bit hard to understand what Sonos does. Introducing the horse’s mouth:

While the app is free, you’ll have to ante up some bucks for the hardware, but if you’re into music and have a decently large home then this could be a pretty exciting entertainment solution. Not only does it brilliantly (theoretically) control your music, it also provides great access to content so your entertainment options are extended and far reaching.

Have you used Sonos products before? Do you have a “go to” integrated home entertainment system that leverages Android? Share your experience in the comments and I’ll be sure to follow up with a full review of the Sonos S5 in the coming weeks!

The folks at Epix have just announced availability of their application for the Android-powered TV-optimized set-top box. What’ll it bring? How about over 3,000 films to watch on your big little screen? (Little big screen?) Anywho, you’ll have to pay for that right, of course, but we’re just happy to see more content options opening up after having seen Google get the banhammer from many of today’s popular television networks. Talton from GTVSource had a chance to play around with it and thankfully gave a quick opinion. Long story short – it’s great, but seriously, where’s the search? Read on for full press details.

T-Mobile Will Give You $1,000 If Your iPhone 4 is Faster Than a Galaxy S 4G

Posted: 27 Apr 2011 11:29 AM PDT

This image has no alt text

T-Mobile – yet again – is laying down the gauntlet. They want you to stop in with your pretty iPhone and see if it can outperform the Samsung Galaxy S 4G in data speeds. Think it’s possible? If you’re successful, you’ll get $1,000 to go home with from T-Mobile. A catch, you say? Why, of course! Your iPhone can be on Verizon or AT&T, but you must be connected to their respective 3G networks during the test.

Verizon’s iPhone 4 is 3G only and AT&T’s has no support for HSPA+. Doesn’t seem like anything but a gutsy marketing tactic after you consider those unfair conditions. I don’t think I’d even waste time going into a T-Mobile store, but I’m sure the average consumer would be sucked in by it. What about you guys? [T-Mobile via BGR]

Google Docs Finally Gets a Native App for Android

Posted: 27 Apr 2011 09:45 AM PDT

After relegating users to in-browser editing since Android first came on the scene, Google Docs has finally made its way to mobile handsets in the form of a native app. The application itself will allow you to search through your documents and upload new files, though editing is still relegated to the mobile browser. This isn’t so bad, as Google has done a lot of work getting their online productivity suite up to speed on smartphones. The application excels in the extended features it offers.

For starters, you can now easily share files from Google Docs with the contacts in your smartphone. It’s as easy as clicking the dropdown button next to any item and selecting share. You can also star documents easily, which comes in handy when used in conjunction with the accompanying Android widget. That widget lets you go directly to starred documents or create a new document, but perhaps its best shortcut is one that allows you to upload an image to Docs. Why would we be uploading an image? Because Google Docs  features the ability to turn an image containing text into an editable file. Pretty darn nifty.

The app is available for phones running Android 2.1 and higher and can be found in the Android Market now.

Playstation Network Got You Paranoid? Find Comfort In Google’s Arms

Posted: 27 Apr 2011 09:12 AM PDT

This image has no alt text

As I’m sure you’ve heard/experienced, over the weekend there was a massive security breach on the Playstation Network that single handedly crippled their online service and exposed all your most personal and intimate information. I’ve been hearing a lot of chatter through my Twitter about people wondering just how secure their information is with other big companies, namely Google.

We all know Google has more information on us than the FBI. Just try doing a simple image search for your name and you can bring up all kinds of skeletons you may have thought were buried deep in your closet.

When it comes to your Android handset, all of your contacts, credit card information, addresses, even pics are all stored in Google’s cloud somewhere and you want to be assured they’re safe. So where exactly is this cloud? It better be a white fluffy cloud with laser trip wires and 7-inch steel walls to protect all the information Google has on me. Oddly enough, that’s not too far from the truth. Come take a tour with me into the Google Data Center (keep your eyes peeled for a T-1000).

All I know is after watching this video, this will definitely be the first place I run to when the zombie apocalypse breaks out. How about you? Is your mind put at a little more ease knowing that not even Tom Cruise could break into Google’s Data Center?
