Samsung Galaxy S 2 Unboxed on Video On a Mountain

Posted: 22 Apr 2011 04:47 AM PDT

Okay, well if you are going to do an unboxing of a smartphone on video obviously you want said unboxing to be somewhat different to all the other usual device unboxings, just to make it that more interesting for the viewer right?

Well that's exactly what the guys over at Phone Arena have done with their unboxing of the Samsung Galaxy S 2, but unwrapping the Android Gingerbread handset whilst hanging off the side of a mountain, yes I said a mountain.

Basil Kronfli of Phone Arena does the unboxing of the Samsung Galaxy S 2 whilst tethered to the side of one of Snowdonia's cliff faces in North Wales; something one has to agree is extreme, and obviously no chance of dropping the device as it was also tethered.

The Samsung Galaxy S 2: Extreme unboxing video delivers five and a half minutes of Kronfli dangling over the edge of the mountain whilst toying with the Android handset, so head on down, hit that play button and enjoy the footage.

Oh and of course if you have taken your own smartphone to the extremes we'd love to know about it so feel free to post to our comments area below.

iPhone 5 Possibly a Global Smartphone

Posted: 22 Apr 2011 02:13 AM PDT

More speculation over the next generation iPhone has now hit the net waves, this time the rumour is that the iPhone 5 could possibly turn our to be a global smartphone capably with working on other carrier networks.

According to an article over on Macrumors and by way of Barrons, Fran Shammo, the CFO of Verizon may have outed the iPhone 5 as being a world phone during the company's earnings conference call and Apple may deliver the next iPhone with both GSM and CDMA capability.

Here's what Shammo had to say…" The fluctuation, I believe, will come when a new device from Apple is launched, whenever that may be, and that we will be, on the first time, on equal footing with our competitors on a new phone hitting the market, which will also be a global device."

Now we already know that the Verizon iPhone has a world mode chip inside, but Apple made the handset CDMA only to make the antenna construction simpler and apparently the Apple iPad 2 has the same chip.

However, if Fran Shammo is correct, it appears that Apple has finally taken the plunge and could deliver the iPhone 5 as a global device.

So what do our readers thing the chances are of the iPhone 5 being released as a global phone?

Samsung Ups Ante, Sues over Apple Gear Infringing Patents

Posted: 22 Apr 2011 01:33 AM PDT

Now you didn't think Samsung was going to simply let Apple sue them over alleged patent infringements by copying the look and feel of Apple's iPhone and iPad, without striking back as hard as possible did you.

Of course not, it's not the way things are done in the mobile arena when two top gladiators go to battle. Thus according to the guys over at 9to5 Mac and by way of Reuters, Samsung has now filed patent lawsuits against Apple over the iPhone and Apple iPad saying the iOS devices infringe on 10 of Samsung's mobile tech patents.

Apparently old Sammy filed the suits in Germany, Japan and South Korea with the 10 infringements mostly over wireless data communication technology, power reduction during data transmission, and 3G technology for reducing errors during data transmission.

Samsung issued a statement to Reuters, which said…“Samsung is responding actively to the legal action taken against us in order to protect our intellectual property and to ensure our continued innovation and growth in the mobile communications business.”

Looks like this one could get ugly and could possibly damage relations between Samsung and Apple and jeopardise the business ties between the two smartphone and tablet manufacturers if it gets too far out of hand. Maybe it's time for Apple and Samsung to get round a table and thrash things out before hitting the courts.
