Verizon iPhone Sales Not As Great As Presumed

Posted: 17 Feb 2011 08:04 AM PST

The much awaited CDMA iPhone version for the Verizon network has been expected for years and in those years the hype along with the much talked about Verizon iPhone had people believing that the handset would virtually break records once Apple made the device available.

I’m sure you’ve all heard the stories of hoards of AT&T customers will ditch the carrier and snap up to Verizon iPhone; however according to an article over on Intomobile and by way of the Boy Genius Report, it appears sales of the Verizon iPhone may have failed to meet expectation.

Apparently the BGR gained Verizon iPhone sales data from 5 Apple retail stores and here are those sales figures…Thursday – Verizon – 909 – AT&T – 539, Friday – Verizon – 916 – AT&T – 680, Saturday – Verizon – 660 – AT&T – 471, Sunday – Verizon – 796 – AT&T – 701, and Monday – Verizon – 711 – AT&T – 618.

Of the 5 stores, the BGR say 2 were very important Apple stores, and has also stated that pre-orders for the CDMA iPhone from both Apple and Verizon were roughly 550,000 so could be a contribution to the seemingly lack of sales at stores.

Adding the above figures up it would appear that the Verizon iPhone sold 3992 over the 5 days while the AT&T iPhone sold 3009, not a very large gap by any standards, so has the Verizon iPhone lost its attraction with the mobile toting public, or do you think perhaps Apple and Verizon left it all too late?

Panasonic Link-to-cell Works with Mobile Phones

Posted: 17 Feb 2011 06:15 AM PST

In this day and age many are turning away from the traditional landline home phone and opting to go with a mobile phone, probably due to the cost of having a landline and the usefulness over being able to use a smartphone whilst out and about.

However there is a home phone that can answer calls made to your smartphone, the device is called the Panasonic KX-TG6582T cordless phone and features Panasonic’s Link-to-cell technology.

And Sam Grobart of Gadgewise spent some time checking out the Panasonic phone and feature and has given the device a review. The Link-to-cell feature means that when you are at home and someone calls your mobile phone, every handset ion the house will also ring and the call can be answered by any handset.

Grobart says that Link-to-cell is good for those that are in the habit of leaving their mobile out of reach or in another room of floor level and allows the user to answer their mobile phone from another device without having to pop downstairs or hunt for your smartphone.

Furthermore apparently the user can use the Panasonic cordless phone to place a call through their smartphone, and Grobart says you don’t really need a landline as you can use the Panasonic Link-to-cell as an extra handset for your mobile.

The Panasonic KX-T6582T sports all the usual features of a cordless phone including voicemail, answering machine, caller ID, and also has the added feature of being able to transfer up to 650contacts from your smartphone to the device.

The Panasonic KX-T6582T comes complete with cordless handset, base units charging dock and additional handset and retails at roughly $80.

Android Can Play Nice with Microsoft Kinect Via Hack: Video

Posted: 17 Feb 2011 05:40 AM PST

So how about getting some action on with Microsoft Kinect via your Android device? Well apparently that’s what some hacker has now managed to achieve and we have video evidence to prove it, although I’m not too sure what the Android device is.

The Kinect hack to the Android device is apparently accomplished using openFrameworks, and the video demonstration which lasts two and a half minutes comes our way courtesy of the guys over at Ubergizmo and by way of the HirotakaSter YouTube page.

According to Ubergizmo this is a merging of Microsoft’s motion sensing Kinect with an Android powered device but there’s no software as yet. You can check out all the tech jargon by hitting up Noritsuna whre you can find links to making the thing.

As I’m not that technically minded when it comes to hacks and as I don't even recognise what Android device it is, I’ll simply leave you to mash that play button and check out the video footage, and feel free if you recognise the device attached to the Kinect to let us know…enjoy.

Android 2.2 Froyo Update for Samsung Captivate Released and Pulled

Posted: 17 Feb 2011 05:18 AM PST

Now I know that many Samsung Galaxy S smartphone users over in the US of A have been waiting for the Android 2.2 Froyo update to hit their chosen device, and apparently Samsung Captivate owner had a brief taste of the Froyo update earlier as Sammy finally made the update available.

According to an article over on the Boy Genius Report, Samsung released the Android 2.2 Froyo update for Samsung Captivate users, but apparently Samsung has slapped Captivate user right in the kisser by pulling the update.

Yes folks it appears that once again your hopes of playing nice with Android 2.2 Froyo on your Samsung Captivate have been well and truly dashed by the incompetence of Samsung.

Annoying at best, cruel at worst, Samsung just can’t seem to get releasing operating systems right these days as is evidenced by complaints over the Samsung Epic 4G and Samsung Vibrant Froyo update. When clicking the read link on the BGR the page comes up ” System error is occured in current page.”

No word from Samsung as to why they pulled the update, but then that’s nothing unusual is it? Fell free to vent your undying anger at Samsung in our comments area below.

Sony S1 PlayStation Tablet vs Apple iPad 2: Poll

Posted: 17 Feb 2011 04:35 AM PST

When it comes to tablets and gaming and the combining of the two it seems that the Sony S1 PlayStation tablet and the Apple iPad 2 will have a challenge competing against each other.

Earlier on today phonesreview.co.uk writer James reported via PC World and Engadget that Sony is upping its game by releasing a brand new tablet called the Sony S1 PlayStation Android Tablet, and with a new Apple iPad apparently releasing this year of 2011 the game will be hot.

Sony already has the gaming smartphone called the Sony Ericsson Xperia Play so to add a tablet to its gaming line only makes sense with the amount of tablet PC's releasing of late, the new Sony Tablet aka The S1 will apparently feature a 9.4-inch display featuring Android 3.0 Honeycomb.

The Sony S1 will be about the same size as the Tegra 2 processor Apple iPad 2, the S1 is apparently going to be released around September and should be priced at about the same price as the iPad around $599 for the WiFi only version.

So here is the question "Will there be a new Sony S1 Tablet release and if so what would you choose to buy?" please answer our poll question below.

Posted: 17 Feb 2011 04:02 AM PST

If you happen to own an HTC Droid Incredible smartphone and don't mind tinkering with you precious device when it comes to unofficial software installs apparently you can now grab a slice of Android 2.3.2 Gingerbread for your Droid Incredible.

According to an article over on Droid-life by Kellex, CyanogenMod has now released the CynogenmMod 7 Release Candidate, which is apparently stable for everyday use.

For anyone wishing to take advantage of CyanogenMod 7 Release Candidate you can download all the necessary source code from the CynogenMod Github repo where the changelog is also available.

For first time flashing CyanogenMod 7 you will need to root your HTC Droid Incredible and install ClockworkMod Recovery, perform a NANDroid backup of your current ROM, format data, system and cache partitions, do a factory reset and then flash CyangenMod, full instructions can be found at their website.

So looks like CyanogenMod has done the usual and delivers the Android Gingerbread operating system yet again before a manufacturer or carrier, so anyone tempted to grab CyanogenMod 7?

Verizon LTE App Development Centre Almost Ready

Posted: 17 Feb 2011 03:36 AM PST

If you are a mobile applications developer hoping to develop apps for Verizon’s LTE network, and happen to be near San Francisco, you just might like to know that the Big Red is almost ready to open their LTE app development centre.

According to the guys over at Phone Scoop, the Verizon LTE app development centre is a place where developers can try out their applications on a “controlled portion of Verizon’s LTE network alongside Verizon engineers.”

Apparently developers will be able to check performance data for their mobile apps along with getting feedback from Verizon engineers on how to accomplish maximum app performance on the LTE network and there will be marketing staff on hand to help show how best to position said apps.

It would appear that the Big Red is highly confident in their LTE 4G network and thus want developers to push it to the limits. A spokesperson for Verizon has told Phone Scoop that they are “anxious to see how creative develops can be in putting its LTE network to use.”

So there you are if you are into the mobile app development game, are near San Francisco and would like to give Verizon’s LTE network a go then you may soon be able to do so at the Verizon app development centre, personally I wasn’t aware apps needed to be specifically developed for LTE but there you go you learn something every day.
