Xoom overclocked at XDA

Posted: 28 Feb 2011 10:40 AM PST

A true constant in the gadget universe is that if a new Android device comes out, you can bet someone over at XDA forums is going to throw caution to the wind and push the edge of the envelop to see what it can do. And the Motorola Xoom is no exception. XDA forum member Coolbho3000 has reported he he overclocked the Xoom up to a max of 1.5 GHz. According to the post at XDA Forums, CoolBho3000 was able to safely get past the Xoom’s max setting of 1Ghz using SetCPU, a utility he wrote to help users boost the power output of their devices.

I have successfully brought the Tegra 2 in the Xoom to 1.5GHz. A few kernel modifications make the dual core chip in the Xoom even more powerful than the recently announced Tegra 2 3D! 1.5GHz through two Cortex A9 cores is truly a force to be reckoned with.

In addition to boosting the speed of the processor, CoolBHO3000 has posted a video to show the improved benchmarks afterwards:

In order to overclock their Xooms, users are advised to do the following procedure:

1. Make sure you’ve unlocked your Xoom’s bootloader for flashing first, then root it.
2. Grab this zip and extract it. It includes a boot.img with the overclocked kernel and a corresponding wifi module: http://www.setcpu.com/files/xoom_ocboot.zip. Thanks to Koush for the rooted ramdisk in this boot.img!
3. Reboot into the bootloader by running:
adb reboot bootloader
4. Flash the boot image to your boot partition, then boot back into Android by running:
fastboot flash boot xoom_ocboot.img
fastboot reboot
5. Push the bcm4329.ko to your /system/lib/modules folder and reboot to re-enable wifi:
adb remount
adb push bcm4329.ko /system/lib/modules/bcm4329.ko
adb reboot

But remember this. Doing so will void your warranty and although CPUSet can safely overclock your system, doing so can always make frying your tablet and possibility. So just keep in mind you may end up with an $800 paper weight if you don’t do it just right and nobody to blame but yourself.

Angry Birds keeps rolling with new content in March

Posted: 28 Feb 2011 09:46 AM PST

Rovio Mobile has tweeted that Angry Birds will receive new levels to Angry Birds and and will likely include some Spring themes in Angry Birds Seasons this March. The news of new levels follows up on news that Angry Birds will launch a custom RIO level, based on the Fox animated feature RIO, and will be making it’s way to other gaming platforms including PC and the PS3. Angry Birds Seasons, the Holiday themed follow-up to the popular app, released a 25 level set for winter during the holidays to go with it’s 45 level Halloween theme, as well as a Valentine pack that was released for lovers everywhere earlier this month. And with our weather now moving towards an early Spring, will we likely see some themes celebrating Easter, Saint Patrick’s Day, and maybe even March Madness?

The Angry Birds phenomenon which was has not only taken over both Android and iPhone platforms to become the most successful game app in history, but has made it’s way obsessively into pop culture. People can’t get enough of flinging birds at those evil egg stealing pigs, which one “tweeter” noted bear an uncanny resemblance to a certain couple of muppets:

Fans are everywhere, including in chamber orchestras who are now performing the theme live on stage. Users are even tweeting about their progress, as one recently noted how ironic that they were flinging birds to destroy the Hollywood sign level during the Oscars. Even my wife has had to take my phone away from me as we’re watching TV because I can’t get enough of these foul fowls! Clearly, Angry Birds is here to stay. And as long as there is a Season to celebrate, Angry Birds will have fresh levels to obsess over.

But the question really is, how far can this juggernaut go?

Motorola unveils plans to make Android secure

Posted: 28 Feb 2011 05:40 AM PST

Both the iPhone and the Blackberry line of smartphones have robust security features that make them appealing to corporations that need to be able to manage devices closely. The Android OS lacks the robust security that many enterprise customers want to see before they adopt a device.

Android has some security, but InfoWorld reports that the level of security currently in play on Android isn’t enough for the device to be trusted. Motorola Mobility is taking advantage of a startup that it purchased called 3LM.

3LM is an enterprise security and management tool development firm. Motorola plans to create APIs that Android is missing to control security and management capability at the OS level. That way the Android device will be manageable via policies and mobile device management tool like the other smartphones. Presumably, only Motorola devices would have the security features making corporations looking at Android devices for workers more likely to come to Motorola devices.

Android 2.3.3 update for Nexus S changes default color temperature

Posted: 28 Feb 2011 05:31 AM PST

If you are the user of the Nexus S and you have applied the latest update to your device you may have noticed something a bit different in the way the screen looks. Apparently, the 2.3.3 update that Google offers for the Nexus S changes the default color temperature of the device.

Google says that the color change was to allow the smartphone to more accurately reflect darker colors at all brightness levels. Some people don't like the color change though because it makes things look yellow.

Some users also claim that the user change in color temperature makes the images seem washed out as well. As The Inquirer points out the strange part is that lower color temperatures tend to be signified by bluish tones. I wonder if Google will leave this as is or make an update for to fix the update.

ASUS Eee Pad MeMO Honeycomb & full specs confirmed [Update: Video & Price]

Posted: 28 Feb 2011 03:29 AM PST

ASUS has confirmed that the Eee Pad MeMO will run Android 3.0 Honeycomb when it arrives later this year, with the 7-inch tablet taking on the HTC Flyer with its hybrid stylus/finger input. jkkmobile spotted the confirmation on an ASUS product sheet at CeBIT 2011 this week, along with confirmation of all the MeMO’s specs.

The tablet has a 1024 x 600 capacitive touchscreen, 1.2GHz Qualcomm MSM8260 processor, quadband HSPA+ support, WiFi b/g/n and Bluetooth 2.1+EDR. There’s also 1GB of RAM and between 8GB and 64GB of onboard storage, along with twin cameras – 5-megapixel with LED flash on the back, 1.2-megapixels up front – and a micro HDMI port.

Other connectivity includes microUSB with Host support, a 3.5mm headphone jack, microSDHC and a twin microphone array; there’s also a digital compass, gyroscope, g-sensor, proximity sensor and light sensor. ASUS reckons the Eee Pad MeMO is good for up to 8hrs video or music playback on a full charge.

Update: Honeycomb isn’t the only surprise ASUS has; jkkmobile has shot a video of the slate (still currently running Android 2.2) with its Bluetooth handset accessory, a remote-control that can be also used to answer calls, so you don’t need to hold the MeMO itself to your head. It also has a transparent screen. According to ASUS Germany, the Eee Pad MeMO is expected to retail for around €499 ($690) for the 8-16GB model, or €699 for the 32-64GB model, with the Bluetooth handset; that certainly undercuts the €669 Flyer at the low end.

Blackberry Playbook to Support Android Apps Says Rep

Posted: 27 Feb 2011 07:52 PM PST

It looks like MWC2011 might have gave us more information other than news about all the exciting Android Phones and Quad Core Mobile CPU’s that are soon to be making way onto the mobile scene. Today news comes in the form of a YouTube video about the Blackberry Playbook Tablet. I know I know, we are all about Android here at AC. Just watch because this video has an exciting and important part, the secret words are just barely audible around 0:14 seconds into the clip. Check the full video out below.

This news comes to us just a few days after the App developers behind ShopSavvy came out and mentioned that their Android app was running on Blackberry Phones. Apparently RIM has been experimenting and testing the waters of having an Android-compatible virtual machine on smartphones and tablets. Back to the video, the Blackberry representative mentions a few things about the Playbook tablet, and then at about 0:14 seconds into the video if you listen close he mentions that it will be able to run Android Applications. This is big news, whether he has heard the same rumors as us, or he knows something we don’t. We’ll have to wait and see. Here’s the video for your viewing pleasure.
