Think HTC: MacBook Pro Thunderbolt (Light Peak) Port

Posted: 23 Feb 2011 08:37 AM PST

Not sure if we are the only ones thinking this but Apple will be putting in its MacBook Pro 13-inch model the Light Peak port that they have called "Thunderbolt", time for HTC to think.

Now we all know that HTC is releasing its new smartphone called Thunderbolt so how come the new MacBook Pro is getting the Light Peak port also named Thunderbolt, surely you cannot have two products with the same name.

Who is wrong, HTC or Intel and could Apple be under scrutiny for applying something with the same name as HTC, this is only a thought and I am merely thinking outside the box.

MacRumors by way of Mac4Ever is showing an image of the low end 13-inch MacBook Pro featuring the new port, the image below clearly shows the new Thunderbolt / DisplayPort hybrid port.

Intel will be officially launching the new Light Peak aka Thunderbolt on Thursday at the same times as the Apple’s new MacBook Pros. Please let us know what you think of the above?

Motorola Atrix 4G Disassembled In Teardown

Posted: 23 Feb 2011 06:51 AM PST

As with most new devices sooner or later someone digs deep inside, rips the device apart and puts it on display, and now this has happened with the new Android 2.2 Froyo packing Motorola Atrix 4G, a little sooner than expected no doubt as the device only went on sale recently.

Anyway according to an article over on Ubergizmo, he guys how usually do this kind of stuff, iFixit, have now completed a teardown of the Motorola Atrix 4G revealing all its internals for the viewing public.

Apparently the guys did note that there isn’t much of any real interest inside the Android device other than that the glass panel isn't glued in so replacing should be a breeze and that the device packs a Qualcomm MDM6200 HSPA+ chip.

The guys also state that the Motorola Atrix 4G should be an easy smartphone to repair should you accidentally break the thing, but other than that apparently there’s nothing to shout about.

The Motorola Atrix 4G teardown is accompanied by the usual guide on how the guys went about doing so, along with several images of the stages which can be view by checking out their website. Of course we do remind you not to try the same with your own Motorola Atrix 4G.

Android Samsung Galaxy Tab 8.9-inch Version On Its Way

Posted: 23 Feb 2011 05:36 AM PST

Well we already have the 7-inch Samsung Galaxy Tab and Sammy is pushing out the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 version, and apparently the word is now a third Android based tablet will be added to the Galaxy range.

According to an article over on Gaj-it, an executive of Samsung has said the Samsung Galaxy Tab 8.9-inch model will sit alongside the 7-inch and 10.1-inch Samsung tablets and will be available from mobile networks.

Not much detail on this 8.9-inch Samsung Galaxy Tab, but the Examiner is reporting the device is expected to pack the Android 3.0 Honeycomb operating system, while Engadget seems to have the low down on a prospective release date, by way of Yonhap News, which is sometime in the summer.

Other than that nothing else is known but we can probably expect at least the same specs as seen on the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10. One has to wonder just how many Android tablet devices Sammy thinks it should need.

Verizon Drops Thousands of Emergency Calls, FCC to Investigate

Posted: 23 Feb 2011 05:12 AM PST

Apparently Verizon has had some problem when handling emergency calls, as the word is during a storm late January the Big Red actually managed to drop thousands of emergency 911 calls, something the Federal Communications Commissions isn't too happy about.

According to an article over on the Boy Genius Report, and by way of Wireless Week, roughly ten thousand 911 calls were placed on the Big Red network in Maryland during a major snowstorm on January 26th and were dropped.

James Arden Barnett, FCC public safety and security chief wrote a letter to the US carrier saying… "The large number of missed 9-1-1 calls on January 26 is truly alarming. I therefore request that Verizon provide an explanation of the causes of this and similar failures, provide Verizon's assessment of the possibility of occurrence in other locations and describe what actions Verizon is taking to prevent recurrence of these problems."

Apparently the Federal Communications Commission has requested a written reply from Verizon over their inquiry and also to attend a meeting with them within 2 weeks so that a resolution of the issue can be discussed.

The director of public relations for Verizon Communications, Harry Mitchell, said in a statement… “Our objective is to provide the best service to our customers, and we will continue to work with 911 centers and others to ensure that callers receive the level of service they deserve and expect when they call 911.”

If you wish, you can check out the full FCC letter sent to Verizon on the 17th of Feb by hitting up here, (PDF)

Time to slap the Big Red on the wrist and make sure they sort out their problems so this never happens again, especially when it comes to emergency calls don't you agree?

There seems to be a never-ending line of Android smartphone all patiently awaiting the arrival of the Android 2.2 Froyo update, one of which is the Virgin Mobile Samsung Intercept smartphone, but word has it that may soon change.
