Slashgear gets a close look at the T-Mobile/LG G-Slate Posted: 14 Feb 2011 10:55 AM PST T-Mobile is showcasing it’s LG designed G-Slate at MWC this week. It’s a mid-range tablet with a nice 8.9 inch screen, fitting it nicely in between the 7 inch pocket and the beefier 10 inch category. Specs include running a Tegra 2 processor for around 1Ghz in processing power and running Android 3.0 (honeycomb) which is as standard as iOS 4 is to the iPad now. But it also has 3D which could make the viewing experience quite interesting. Unfortunately, users will have to wear those geeky red/blue 3D glasses to get the 3D vibe, but LG has made switching between 3D and 2D pretty seamless in the interface and it will enable 3DTV fans to use their G-Slate as a media portal to boot. All the usual connections including HDMI, microUSB, as well as T-Mobile’s HSPA+ network for high speed connectivity. And there’s an optional docking port stand for easy charging and connectivity. No word on price just yet, but it’s due out later this year. So stay tuned! [via Slash Gear] ) |
Acer Iconia Tab A100 announced Posted: 14 Feb 2011 10:31 AM PST Acer announced the Iconia Tab A100 at Mobile World Congress this week in Barcelona. The 7″ tablet will run Android 3 (Honeycomb), the OS built from the ground up to make tablet’s really cook. Additionally, the Iconia Tab is powered with Acer’s “clear.fi” multi media sharing system which allows for integration with other clear.fi supported devices in the home.
Consumers will also love the powerful dual core Tegra 2 processor, which makes browsing and playing games a faster experience, and it’s NVidia GeForce GPU supporting flash for games and multimedia playback. And with Full 1080p HD video playback, the Iconia becomes a media streaming device for home theater as well thanks to it’s built in HDMI port. Other devices can connect via the miniUSB port and the A100 sports all the connection standards including WiFi, 3G and Bluetooth 2.1. The Acer Iconia A100 will be available in the UK at the end of April, price TBA. ) |
Posted: 14 Feb 2011 09:54 AM PST There are so many Honeycomb driven tablets coming out at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, that it’s almost becoming ho-hum. But SlashGear came across the LG Optimus Pad and found it surprisingly refreshing. But with it’s glossy LED screen, that may not last long. Glossy screens mean one thing … fingerprints. It was the bane of the Galaxy Tab and it’s the bane of the Optimus as well. But since it’s an 8.9 inch panel putting it in between a handy 7 inch tablet and a larger 10 inch category, the Optimus can be easier to hold and still have just a bit more real estate. A nifty selling point is that it not only records in 1080p full HD video, but also in 720p HD video in 3D (although users will have to use glasses to enjoy the 3rd dimension). Check out the video Running Android 3 (Honeycomb) in a pure, Google Experience configuration, the interface is very snappy and responsive – no doubt thanks to it’s Tegra 2 processor. And the 3D capability makes for a fun toy when wanting to play with HD video recording through it’s dual cameras on the back. It’s a definite niche vibe, to be sure, but the smaller size may be attractive for mobile users looking for a tad more real estate but not too much that it can’t fit in a purse or backpack with relative ease. Posted: 14 Feb 2011 09:18 AM PST SlashGear got a good close-up look at Acer’s main competitor in the 10-inch tablet category … the Iconia Tablet A500. Designed to go head to head with both the Motorola Xoom and the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1, the Iconia is powered by NVidia’s Tegra 2 processor for 1080p HD video playback that seems to be the tablet’s main selling point. Specs include the standard bevy of features including WiFi, 3G and Bluetooth 2.1+EDR connectivity, along with USB and HDMI connectors and dual cameras including a 5 megapixel picture taker on the back, and a basic webcam on the front for video chat in HD. The Iconia Tab has a gorgeous 13.3mm brushed aluminum case as well. Plans are to run Android 3 (Honeycomb), which has been on the radar of all Android tablet makers since CES, and SlashGear posits that if Acer can get the price lower that most, it could trigger a drop from the above $1,000 price point that most are obsessed with. The Iconia Tab will go on sale in April, 2011. [via SlashGear] ) |
SlashGear gets hands-on with the Acer Iconia Posted: 14 Feb 2011 08:57 AM PST Over at Slash Gear, they take a good long look at the Acer Iconia Smart and begs the question, when does a smart phone stop being a smart phone and starts being a tablet that happens to make phone calls? It’s an interesting design with it’s 4.8 inch screen and 21:9 aspect ratio on it’s multi touch LED screen. But with a 1 GHz Snapdragon processor, it’s defintely strong enough to go beyond handheld computing.
The super long screen in portrait mode is quite a unique design choice since movies are in 16:9, not 21:9, which only leads SG to the conclusion that it’s more for web browsing than multi media applications. Though it could do both. It also sports the now standard two cameras with an 8mp camera on the front and a 2 MP camera on the back (interesting). The Inconia Smart has all the usual options from WiFi to Blutooth to HSDPA. And it’s running Android 2.3 (Gingerbread) to boot. It’ll be interesting to see if the long design will catch on with mobile fans. It starts in the UK in late Spring. [via SlashGear] ) |
ViewSonic v350 World’s First Dual-Sim Android Phone Revealed Posted: 14 Feb 2011 05:21 AM PST We’re here at Mobile World Congress 2011 and we’ve got our hands on a ViewSonic v350 Android 2.2 Froyo smartphone. This phone has a brand new feature – dual SIM cards. This feature is possible with Android stitching the two together, making it possible for you to use one for business, one for personal, or perhaps if you’re a traveler, you can switch between the two SIMs on the fly. As the title of this post suggests, we’re pretty sure this is the very first dual-SIM Android smartphone in the world.
The ViewSonic v350 works with Android 2.2 Froyo, no word on upgrades yet but if the ViewPad 4 is any indication, Gingerbread is more than likely on the way. It weighs in at 125 g, has a 5 megapixel camera on the back, and has a 3.5 inch screen with 480 x 320 pixel resolution. One of the really cool features this phone comes with (other than the dual-SIM) is Smart Switch. This is a feature that’s going to be essentially standard from what we can tell on all Android products coming out this wave from ViewSonic. The v350 they’ve reminded us several times is Google Certified, meaning it’s not second class, essentially, and from what we’ve seen having held the device in our hands, flipping back and forth a bit, it’s going to be a big contender in the market very soon regardless of its Android 2.2 Froyo state. This dual-SIM situation is going to be a thing of the future, at least until they can figure out how to quit using SIMs altogether – believe it! Have a look at our exclusive photos of the ViewSonic v350 below: NOTE the following (above and below) – you can see here how the v350 has both SIM cards underneath its battery on back. One connects via a swinging metal clasp like you’ve seen in such phones as the G2, and the other flatly in the upper right. One of the most evident places you can see the dual-SIM use in the phone is on the call screen, from whens you can call from either SIM – two different call buttons! ) |
LG Optimus 3D gets official at MWC 2011 Posted: 14 Feb 2011 04:44 AM PST LG went all official with Optimus 3D at MWC 2011 today. The smartphone looks cool and it is 3D capable and has a dual lens 5MP camera on the back that can record 3D video. The smartphone runs a 1GHz OMAP4 processor and the display can show the 3D video recorded without the need for glasses.
That screen is 4.3-inches and has WVGA resolution. Other features include HDMI 1.4 connectivity for 3D viewing on a big screen, DLNA support, and the camera can record normal 1080p video in 2D as well. It has a memory card slot and has 8GB of storage. The UI is 3D on the phone with five 3D interfaces for gallery, camera, game, and apps. The smartphone will launch in Europe in Q2. The only thing we aren’t thrilled about is that it will launch with Android 2.2. A Gingerbread update is supposed to come “in due course” which means whenever they feel like offering it I guess. ) |
Acer outs Iconia Smart Android smartphone Posted: 14 Feb 2011 04:20 AM PST Acer has unveiled a new smartphone at MWC 2011 called the Iconia Smart. The device has a massive 4.8-inch screen with a 21:9 aspect ratio. The phone is longer than your typical smartphone and has a thin profile with a slight curve to it. The body of the phone is metal and the device is 64.5mm wide. The big screen supports multi-touch and it has the four home keys we know from Android.
The rear camera is an 8MP unit with LED flash and the smartphone runs Android 2.3. That giant 4.8-inch screen has a resolution of 1024 x 480 allowing the user to surf websites without having to resize them or scroll the screen. The Iconia Smart supports HSDPA 14.4 and WiFi 802.11n speeds and has integrated Bluetooth 2.1 + EDR. Other features include a 1GHz Snapdragon processor, 6-axis motion sensing for gaming and other uses, and a 2MP front camera for IP video calling. GPS is integrated and the phone has HDMI out. The battery is good for 8 hours of talk on a 3G network and 500 hours on standby. The Iconia Smart will launch on May 1 with pricing to be announced later. ) |
Androdify lets you create and dress up your own Android robot Posted: 14 Feb 2011 04:05 AM PST Geeks really love Android and if you are a super fan, you will find this app interesting. The app is called Androidify and is from Google and Larva Labs. The app allows you to take the generic green Android mascot and customize it with clothes, accessories, and more.
You can stretch the Android to make it taller or fatter; the app has lots of customization. You can give the bot a beard or hair, whatever floats your boat. You can make your own Android mascot to suit your needs. Once you are done creating your custom Android you can share your creation with a share menu that is integrated. The app will save the creations to your pictures/Andoridify folder on your SD card too. You can download the app now at no charge. Via Techcredo ) |
Posted: 14 Feb 2011 03:42 AM PST Motorola has announced at MWC 2011 that the Xoom tablet that has been anticipated in the US will be heading to Europe as well. The tablet will hit Europe starting in Q2 2011 and will run Android 3.0 Honeycomb. The tablet was first spied at CES 2011. The Xoom is packed with features that should add up to a very powerful tablet.
The machine uses a 1GHz dual-core processor and has a 10.1-inch screen. That screen has HD resolution of 1280 x 800. The Xoom also has HDMI output and has a 5MP rear camera for 720p video recording, a 2MP front camera, and a lot more. The tablet has up to 10 hours of video playback per charge and has integrated speakers for listening to music and video. The tablet also has an integrated gyroscope, barometer, e-compass, accelerometer, and adaptive lighting. European pricing is unknown at this time. ) |
Motorola Pro Android smartphone breaks cover at MWC 2011 Posted: 14 Feb 2011 03:21 AM PST Motorola is making some announcements at MWC 2011 already and the first new device that the company is trotting out at the show is the Motorola Pro. The smartphone is aimed at the business user, but I would image that some consumers will find the Android offering appealing as well.
The smartphone will land in Europe to start with. It runs Android 2.2 and has a 1GHz processor with 2GB of internal memory. The memory can be expanded with SD cards up to 32GB. The smartphone can also act as a 3G mobile hotspot with support for five other devices via WiFi. The Pro also has a dedicated QWERTY keyboard and ships with QuickOffice pre-loaded and has full email support. The screen is 3.1-inches and is multi-touch with support for Flash player 10.1. The camera on the phone is a 5MP unit with auto focus and dual LED flash. The phone can be integrated into corporate VPN networks with security add ons like AuthenTec IPSec multi-threaded VPN integrated, remote wipe of the CD card and device, and complex password support along with encryption of the SD card. Check out the video of the Pro below for more detail. |
Microsoft Kinect hacked for Android compatibility Posted: 14 Feb 2011 02:43 AM PST The details are scant on this hack with the geek behind the deed not offering up any details on how he managed to get the Kinect working on the Android platform. Still the feat is impressive and it’s turning out that the Kinect is a very hackable device indeed.
The video below shows the guy running the Kinect on the Android device he is using featuring the Armadillo brand and the Kinect is reading depth information. The Kinect doesn’t appear to do anything at this point other than read the data and show the video it is seeing on the screen of the tablet. I can see this being an interesting way to control games and other things once the system is fine tuned. We hope that the guy offers up the code that he used to get the Kinect working on the Android device so others can play along. Via Kinect Hacks [Thanks Robert!] ) |
LG’s Tegra 2 Optimus Pad tablet launches at MWC 2011 Posted: 14 Feb 2011 02:30 AM PST As promised, LG has officially announced the Optimus Pad, its version of the G-Slate for Europe and Asia. Based around an 8.9-inch 15:9 aspect 1280 x 768 capacitive touchscreen display, the LG Optimus Pad runs Android 3.0 Honeycomb on NVIDIA’s 1GHz Tegra 2 chipset. There’s all the usual connectivity – 3G, WiFi, Bluetooth and GPS – along with a dual camera array that can shoot 3D video clips. An HDMI port – something the Galaxy Tab 10.1 lacks – makes squirting that 3D footage to a nearby HDTV straightforward, or you could upload it to YouTube 3D. Pricing is yet to be announced, but LG expects the Optimus Pad to go on sale in select markets from March 2011. Press Release: ) |

Combining PlayStation playability together with the latest in Android tech, Xperia PLAY is making a definite shot for the slam dunk. Inside this device you’ll find not ultra-fast graphics and completely dedicated game controls, a functionality you’ll find nowhere else, but a set of exclusive downloads available via the Android Marketplace to your Xperia Play today!

Xperia PLAY will come with Android 2.4 (Gingerbread) out of the box, and is the first PlayStation certified device of its kind. Andy Rubin, Vice President of Engineering at Google has taken the opportunity to say some choice words on the situation with the following: “XperiaTM PLAY and PlayStation Certified gaming are great examples of the kind of innovation that's possible in the open Android ecosystem," – more than likely thinking more about the release date for the device, which is no sooner than March 2011. Also there’s a whole load of new videos surrounding this event, those including an interview with Jonas Berg, one with Luca Pagano, and Xavier Costa. There’s also Aaron Duke to show you some Product manager action. Check them all out here: Have a look below for full details on the handset: ) |

Sony Ericsson XPERIA Play Hands-On [VIDEO] Posted: 13 Feb 2011 01:45 PM PST If there were ever a device more leaked than this particular doozy, I’d like to see it. We’ve had shots from here to Timbuktu from every single angle of the Sony Ericsson XPERIA Play, aka the PlayStation phone, but it’s never quite the same until you’ve actually got one in your very own hands. Take a peek at the video we’ve got, taken with our very own hands today in Barcelona – it’s hot!
We got the opportunity take a peek at several different games on the XPERIA Play today: Bruce Lee: Dragon Warrior, FIFA ’10, and Asphalt 6 – all of them have performed spectacularly – behold a true mobile gaming device. The directional and PlayStation buttons all work as well or better than they ever have before, while the trackpads work a bit strangely compared to the sorts of feelings we’re used to in our digits – that is, there’s no feedback but for the action on the screen for the movement of these invisible joysticks. Then there’s a bit more work that is going to have to be done to the software as we did see a couple of app crashes through our demo, but we are aware that this isn’t the final working model of course. Amongst other buggy items are going in between apps, bringing the screen from portrait and landscape orientation, and general starting up and shutting downs of apps. One of the things we’re looking forward to the most on this cool beans game player is the exclusive titles Sony Ericsson has promised its customers as well as what’s going to happen as far as Sony's licensing scheme and how developers will be singing up for and using it. Behold a lovely device: ) |
