Optimus 3D And Xperia Play On Pre-Order In UK For Over £500

Posted: 21 Feb 2011 03:14 PM PST

This is just one of those early, unsubsidized, let’s-not-freak-out-yet prices, but still. £520 works out to nearly 850 of our anemic US “dollars.” What does Sony-Ericsson think this Play thing is, the PSP 2?

And the Optimus 3D — it’s certainly a beast of a phone, but with the 3D effect not blowing us away and the market for that kind of thing rather limited, I’m not sure it’s going to move a lot of units without an 80% carrier subsidy. Hey, it happens.

The prices come from Play.com, and should be taken with a grain of salt. We’ll probably hear some soothing, corrective words from S-E and LG over the next week.

Microsoft Rolls Out A Pre-Update Update For Windows Phone 7

Posted: 21 Feb 2011 10:53 AM PST

Whoa, whoa, whoa — I just realized how long it’s been since we’ve done our once-regular segment, Good News/Bad News. With that said, you can probably assume what’s coming next: It’s Good News/Bad News time!

The Good News: Windows Phone 7 handsets are getting their first software update today!

The Bad News: It’s not the update you’re waiting for.

According to Microsoft, this update is more of a primer than anything else. They’re patching up a few bugs in the update process itself, as well as putting some polish on some smaller bits that will make the big update that much less complicated to pull off.

Once you’ve received the alert saying your phone is ready for update, you’ll have to plug it into either the Zune software (PC) or Windows Phone 7 Connector (Mac) and let it do its thing.

Once that’s done, it’ll just be a few more weeks before the long-awaited copy-and-paste update starts hittin’ handsets near and far. Unless there’s another update before that, which will probably require at least two more pre-update updates.

Verizon Updates V CAST Music For Android

Posted: 21 Feb 2011 08:13 AM PST

Perhaps I just run in strange social circles, but I’ve yet to meet anyone who knows Verizon’s V CAST service as anything but “that thing I always opened accidentally on my feature phones and wondered if it was costing me money”.

But hey, what do I know? Maybe there are some people out there who live and breath V CAST, using it for all of their media-gettin’ needs. If so, they’ve got a lil’ treat waiting for them on their Android handsets this morning: a new build of V CAST Music.

So, what’s new in the new app? They’ve just taken everything and crammed it into the one app. Whereas tinkering with ringback tones and the like used to require you to pop into the browser, it’s all a part of the app now. Ringback tones are listed right amongst ringtones and full tracks, with some combinations of the aforementioned sold together in discounted bundles.

Also new: a wishlist feature for tracking future purchases, and a “suggestion” feature so you can remind your buddies of how badly they need to hear that one Justin Bieber song each and every day.

The new app should work with any VZW handset running Android 2.1 or later

Honeycomb Ported To The Nexus One

Posted: 21 Feb 2011 06:28 AM PST

This one is only for die-hard modders that only use a Nexus One for shits and giggles. But if that’s you, how about installing Honeycomb on your Nexus One? Of course you sort of need to know how to install these sort of things, but you’ll certinally be the coolest kid on the block if your Nexus One runs Honeycomb.

Sure, this port doesn’t allow for silly things like placing phone calls, sending text messages, using Bluetooth, WiFi, the camera, or anything that makes a sound, but that should be okay with true Android fanboys. It’s about the experience, right? The rest of us will probably wait until a more polished version surfaces.
