Sony-Ericsson’s Xperia Mini And Mini Pro Are Officially Small

Posted: 05 May 2011 02:08 PM PDT

There are a lot of gigantic phones being released these days, but what about those of us who like a more diminutive form factor? Sony-Ericsson has our back, it looks like, and is releasing a pair of Android 2.3 handsets that number among the smallest out there.

The Xperia mini and mini pro (yes, they insist on lowercasing it) sport 1GHz processors, twee little 3″ 320×480 screens, and a 5-megapixel camera on the back that does HD video. Not that the HD is going to be much better than non-HD with that sensor size, but hey.

The two phones are, spec-wise, more or less the same (the battery in the pro is ever-so-slightly smaller), the main difference being, of course, the slide-out keyboard on the pro. You better have some tiny fingers to operate that thing! But it’s nice to have the option. We’ll let you know how it feels when we get our hands on it.

Android 2.3 (huzzah!) is customized (nayyy!) with a skin that lets you tuck apps into corners — I actually like the idea, if it works. Again, we’ll see about that later.

The phones are set to launch in August, but there are no carriers signed up just yet. The launch event was in London, as well, so it could be a while before they take up residence on this side of the pond.

And The Winner Of The 1.5 Ghz Qualcomm Android Developer Device Is…

Posted: 05 May 2011 02:07 PM PDT

To say that our latest contest was a success would be… a bit of an understatement. Most of our giveaways pull in a few hundred entries, or maybe a bit over a thousand. Between comments here on MobileCrunch, Facebook passphrase hunters, and those who took the time to dig up all of the eggs we hid around the site, our giveaway of the insanely awesome 1.5 Ghz Android Developer Device from Qualcomm managed to pull in many, many times that.

Unfortunately, amongst the many thousands of entries we received, there can only be one winner. After hours of churnin’ away after the contest closed last night, our handy-dandy contest robots (which may or may not just be Greg with a bunch of PHP scripts and and a massive pot of coffee) have drawn a winner. And the winner is…

Paul M. Of Connecticut! (Note: The winning Paul M. has already been contacted; if you also happen to be a Paul M. from Connecticut but weren’t contacted, we still love you, but you’re not a winner this time.)

Huge thanks to everyone who entered (we hope you all had fun!) and a mega-huge thanks to Qualcomm and Bsquare for providing the device.

Hands On With The Infuse 4G On AT&T

I’ve never been a big fan of the “big phone” design so popular these past few years, starting with the HD2. However, I actually think I could carry around this big, flat (just 8.9mm, which Samsung is touting as the thinnest 4G device yet), and light 1.2GHz Android phone. Sure, it’s a monster — but it’s as thin as the iPhone, and the screen (4.5-inch Super AMOLED Plus model) is strikingly clear. It is, in fact, the first phone I could consider watching movies on during a long plane ride.

Is it too big for some? Absolutely. But Samsung is blurring the line between big smartphones and small tablets more than it’s ever been blurred before — and as the success of the Droid X has proven, that’s exactly what some people want.

Customer Benefits

The Samsung Infuse 4G will be the thinnest 4G smartphone available in the U.S. and will feature
the largest screen — at 4.5 inches — in AT&T's smartphone lineup, and the largest touch screen on
any Samsung phone. Powered by a 1.2 GHz application processor and running the Android 2.2
platform, the device delivers a brilliant display using Samsung's next-generation Super AMOLED™
Plus technology which features 50 percent more sub-pixels for better contrast. The display also offers
unmatched outdoor viewing quality, even in the brightest sunlight.

With the Infuse 4G, Samsung and AT&T are raising the stakes on pre-loaded content that is not
available on any other device. In collaboration with Rovio, the Infuse 4G will feature a special edition
of Angry Birds pre-loaded on the smartphone. Players can unlock a special "Golden Egg" level of the
game, and once the special level is completed, users can register to win Samsung prizes exclusive to
Infuse 4G users.**

The smartphone also includes an 8-megapixel camera/camcorder with auto-focus and flash that
shoots HD video with incredible detail. A front facing camera is perfect for self portraits or video chat.
Customers can also watch hit movies and TV shows from preloaded apps like Samsung Media Hub, U-
verse Mobile and U-verse Live TV.

The first 500,000 Infuse 4G units sold will include a $25 voucher for consumers to get started on
downloading content from Media Hub. With Media Hub's progressive downloading feature, users can
start watching their content almost immediately as the rest of the file downloads to the Infuse 4G. Plus,
all Media Hub content can be shared among five Media Hub-enabled devices on the same account.
The Infuse 4G also comes with a 2GB microSD card with preloaded trailers for upcoming summer
movies.

Compatible with the Infuse 4G and other devices on the Android 2.2 platform or better, AT&T has also
launched a new, fun app called JustUs. The app combines both social media and text activity from five
favorite contacts into an animated wallpaper, keeping users better connected with those that matter
most. Customers can download the app for free in Android Market today.

Quotes

"The 4.5-inch screen on Infuse 4G is enhanced further with Samsung's Super AMOLED Plus
technology. Colors are rich and bright, even while outdoors in sunlight," said Jeff Bradley, senior vice
president, Devices, AT&T Mobility and Consumer Markets. "When you juxtapose that with the fact that
it's the thinnest 4G smartphone out there today, it's an incredibly compelling choice for our customers."

"When you combine the powerful 1.2 GHz application processor with AT&T's advanced 4G network,
this device will truly be the fastest smartphone Samsung has ever created with AT&T," said Omar
Khan, chief technology officer & chief product officer for Samsung Mobile. "The Infuse 4G is our
latest example of Samsung's global leadership in Android platform smartphones. With every Android
smartphone that we launch, we're bringing something new and exciting to the market."

Smartphone Portfolio

AT&T is a pioneer in smartphones and devices and expects to widen its portfolio in 2011. In January,
AT&T committed to introducing 20 4G devices and 12 additional Android devices by the end of the
year. Samsung Infuse 4G will be one of several new 4G devices that have been offered to AT&T
customers in the first half of 2011.

HTC Kingdom Gets A Proper Photo Leak, Specs Revealed

Posted: 05 May 2011 10:35 AM PDT

Well thats a much better picture of the HTC Kingdom than that one from last week, wouldn’t you say?

Plus, this one comes paired with specs. Tasty, tasty specs. Find’em after the jump.

The dudes over at PocketNow tore apart a pre-release ROM leaked by the growingly notorious 911Sniper, and found the following:

  • WiMax support, so we’re almost certainly looking at a Sprint release here
  • 1.2 Ghz CPU
  • WiFi 802.11b/g/n
  • FM Receiver/Transmitter
  • 1.3 megapixel front camera (presumably there’s a rear camera as well, but we’re not sure of the megapixel rating yet)
  • 768MB RAM
  • Same 4″ qHD display as the EVO 3D, though this one likely isn’t 3D.
  • Runs Android 2.3.3 out of the box

Put it all together, and it looks like we’re lookin’ at what Sprint will presumably call the HTC EVO 2.

Motorola Goes White And Blue Collar With The Motorola XPRT And Motorola Titanium

Posted: 05 May 2011 06:23 AM PDT

When security and toughness is paramount, call the Navy Seals. When you need a phone with similar attributes, Sprint and Motorola hopes you look towards the just-announced Android XPRT and Titanium.

The XPRT is Sprint’s first Android phone with enterprise-class security, which comes by way 256-bit AES data encryption and enterprise-controlled security schemes and functions including remote wipe, password recovery and enabling various locks. A 3.1-inch HVGA screen rests above a full QWERTY keypad with a 1GHz processor running A Motoblur’d Android 2.2. The XPRT is hitting all of Sprint’s retail channels June 5 for $129.

The Titanium keeps Direct Connect alive with a full Qwerty keypad, 3.1-inch touchscreen and Android 2.1. The iDEN device of course meets military specs for dust, shock vibration, solar radiation — pretty much anything Hal Jordan could manifest. The Titanium is the successor to the Motorola i1 launched last year and will probably make some push-to-talk loyests happy to finally join the cool kids with their own Android 2.x phone. Pricing and availability wasn’t announced.
