BlackBerry PlayBook Launch June 16, Prices From £399 Posted: 17 May 2011 03:46 PM PDT Finally, the eagerly awaited BlackBerry PlayBook tablet will be arriving on our shores. It is currently available to pre-order from £399, with a launch date of June 16. The 7-inch tablet at 425 grams is lighter than that of the Apple iPad 2 and unlike the iPad, the BlackBerry PlayBook has the added benefit of Adobe Flash support, so those videos that will not play on the Apple tablet due its lack of Adobe Flash will play happily on the BlackBerry tablet. The PlayBook comes with two cameras that have a superior megapixel count than a number of other tablets. The rear camera is a 5MP with a good image quality, the front-facing camera is 3MP and will be mainly used for video calling. As stated in the article by Which, there is an indication that the front facing camera on the PlayBook is more likely to be used with BlackBerry’s own video conferencing app, than that of a third party app like Skype. For the time being there will be fewer available BlackBerry apps, than compared to those available Apple iPad owners. However, on paper the PlayBook is a very powerful and attractive tablet PC. The BlackBerry PlayBook can be pre-ordered from Currys, Dixons and PC World, price for 16GB model is £399, the 32GB model is priced at £479 and the 64GB model costs £559. Will you be purchasing one? Please let us know. |
iPhone 5 Manufactured Q3: Qualcomm CDMA/GSM baseband, 8-Megapixel Camera Posted: 17 May 2011 03:29 PM PDT The new Apple iPhone 5 codename N94 is apparently going to be manufactured Q3, 2011 and will feature Qualcomm CDMA/GSM baseband and an 8-Megapixel Camera. The GSM and CDMA format already works in the Verizon iPhone and it will be coming worldwide to the new iPhone 5 once released, the 8-megapixel CMOS sensor will be from OmniVision and apparently according to 9To5Mac the backup sensor will be by Sony next year. FBR Capital Markets have a few predictions and the above is included, the new iPhone 5 has not yet had any official announcements and will not for a while yet. Apple has always been very good at keeping us in the dark and predictions, speculations and rumours is all we have at the moment. Most of the time what we have reported has been right via sources and we are hoping that the above features are also right, the iPhone may possibly boast the dual-core A5 processor that is internally developed by Apple and the new chip may be able to play back 1080p graphics. There may be some news about a low cost Apple iPhone next week and we will keep a close eye on this one, please join us on Facebook or Twitter for instant updates. Source – PC World |

New iPhone Will Not Feature 4G Says Analyst Posted: 17 May 2011 01:59 PM PDT The rumours and speculation continue surrounding the next-gen iPhone, according to an analyst in an iDB article, the new iPhone will not feature 4G capabilities. This debate on '4G' coming with newest Apple iPhone has raged on for a while, initially it was thought that the latest iPhone would come with 4G/LTE. However, Apple made a statement during their last earning's call stating that 4G would "force a lot of design compromises" that the company "was not willing to make", see statement here provided by iDB. Please note that there has been a new update to AT&T's marketing strategy, which has changed the requirements for devices to be labelled "4G". It is now believed that the next-gen iPhone would fall within these requirements. Now, an analyst from BMO Capital is stating that Apple will not release a 4G iPhone until at least 2012, this release period coincides with my colleague James' article dated February 25. In a quote from the Huffington Post, provided in an article from the guys at iDB, it states “The device's battery life would take a substantial hit from 4G data transfer,” Bachman explained. He opines that the next iPhone release will be “more evolutionary than revolutionary” and might feature “a better camera and perhaps different casing.” Another analyst recently indicated that the next-gen iPhone would come with HSPA+ support, so expect to see 4G compatibility. However, whether the carriers are actually ready to support the iPhone with 4G is an entirely different matter. What do you think, will the next-gen iPhone come with 4G? |

Android Honeycomb Tablets Will Outdo iOS Tablets Says Nvidia CEO Posted: 17 May 2011 09:13 AM PDT The big deal in the tablet arena is can Apple maintain dominance with their iOS tablets or can Android overtake the likes of the Apple iPad 2. Well apparently the CEO of NVIDIA is of the view that Android can outdo iOS in the tablet stakes. According to an article over on International Business Times, Jen-Hsun Huang, the CEO of NVIDIA has told the Reuters Technology Summit that newer Android tablets including Android Honeycomb would outsell iPads as developers create more games and other software for the devices. Huang, the co-founder of NVIDIA said, “The Android phone took only two and a half years to achieve the momentum that we’re talking about. I would expect the same thing on Honeycomb tablets.” However apparently there are analysts that feel perhaps Apple is too far ahead in the tablet game for Android based tablet to catch up. But according to Huang Android smartphones now outsell the iPhone and are becoming increasingly popular in China and emerging markets. What do our readers think on this matter, is it only a matter of time before Android can overtake Apple in the tablet space? |

Amazon to Challenge iPad 2 and 3 with Coyote and Hollywood Tablets Posted: 17 May 2011 08:33 AM PDT If the rumours are correct the tablet wars may soon start to heat up as you probably know Amazon is looking to enter the tablet arena with Android tablets and apparently one codenamed Coyote will challenge the Apple iPad 2 while another codenamed Hollywood will challenge the Apple iPad 3. According to an article over on Cult of Mac, by way of the BGR, an unnamed tipster has delivers details on the Amazon Coyote, which will apparently be an entry level Kindle tablet based on the NVIDIA Tegra 2 platform, so much like the iPad 2. However its the second tablet that is somewhat more interesting, the Amazon Hollywood, which apparently will have hardware that Amazon hopes will "potentially make the iPad 3 obsolete even before it launches" Word is the Amazon Hollywood tablet will be based on the NVIDIA T30 "Kal-El", a quad-core processor that makes the Tegra 2 dual-core CPU look somewhat dated as the "Kal-El" has a 500 percent increase in performance. Apparently both the Amazon Coyote and Hollywood tablets are expected to release before the year is out. That's all the rumour doing the rounds at this time, but personally I can't see Apple resting on their laurels and letting Amazon deliver a tablet or two that could possibly make their iOS tablets look like something out of the ark, can you? |

Gingerbread Leak Reveals Video Chatting Tab, Possibly? Posted: 17 May 2011 07:53 AM PDT There is a possibility that when owners of the HTC Thunderbolt eventually get their official Android 2.3 update, it could come with a new video chatting tab as indicated in the leaked version of the update. As indicated by the screen print (below) taken from the leaked version of the Gingerbread update, there is definitely an option to sort your contacts by those with video chatting capabilities. The Video Chatting feature and Skype Video were initially expected to be pre-loaded on the HTC Thunderbolt back when it released. However, Skype did not play nicely on the smartphone and therefore, it was not ready before the handset launched. As stated in the article by the guys at Droid-Life, they tried to load up Fring on their device to see if this would work the video chatting, but without success. So could the video chat feature have a connection with Google Talk? Maybe Skype could be introduced to the smartphone in the near future? It looks like we will just have to wait and see, watch this space. Please leave us your thought on the video chatting tab possibly coming with the new Android 2.3 Gingerbread update. |
Mobile Financial Services Not Adopted Globally Posted: 17 May 2011 07:44 AM PDT Although it is broadly recognised that mobile financial services can become a means of banking for the unbanked, apparently the uptake of such mobile financial services is failing to garner wide scale adoption across the globe. According to the latest report by Weforum. The adoption of mobile financial services has been currently confined to just a few countries where access to such services have been historically contained with the scope of services limited to mobile money transfer. The Associate Director, Head of Emerging Markets Finance, World Economic Forum USA, James Bilodeau says, "Ultimately, the market will drive scale in mobile financial services. However, public and private sector stakeholders must be focused on eliminating those obstacles to viable business models in order to create a virtuous cycle of adoption and innovation." Such countries as Kenya and the Philippines are some of those covered by the report and have achieved adoption levels in excess of 10 percent of the adult population. The Head of the Telecommunications Industry, World Economic Forum USA, William Hoffman says, "The potential for the mobile platform to inclusively transform the financial lives of individuals and the structures of industries is unquestioned. What's needed is the evidence and collective intelligence for navigating the complexity of the mobile finance landscape. This report serves as a tool for decision-makers in that regard." |
