Deal of the Day: Sony Ericsson Xperia Play for $99 on Amazon

Posted: 23 May 2011 05:54 PM PDT

Remember that Sony Ericsson Xperia Play review I did a few days ago? Well, if my review had you itching to get your hands on the gaming smartphone, Amazon is offering the handset for new Verizon customers at only $100. I can’t even find a used Nintendo DS on Craigslist for that price! Oh- and if you’re an existing customer with an upgrade on hand, you can still get a helluva deal at $150.

The Sony Ericsson Xperia Play is Sony’s first ever Playstation certified smartphone. The phone comes preloaded with a handful of games including Crash Bandicoot and Madden NFL 2011. Inside the device is a 1GHz second generation Snapdragon processor, 512MB of RAM, 4-inch screen with a front facing camera, noise cancelling microphone and who could forget – a full slide out gaming pad with shoulder buttons for intense gaming sessions.

Just as a side note, the Xperia Play wont be launched until the 26th and Amazon is already showing the phone as back-ordered. So that is something you may want to keep in mind. It looks like this device may be pretty popular so if you’re thinking of picking one up, now might be the perfect time to pre-order.

Red Hot Inspire Shows Up At Radio Shack – Launching This Week?

Posted: 23 May 2011 05:15 PM PDT

Remember that image of the red HTC Inspire that was leaked out a few days ago? Well, it looks like el caliente version of HTC’s popular Inspire 4G could be possibly launching this week on AT&T. But that’s not all, if this leaked Radio Shack price tag is any indication, they may be one of the only retailers offering the phone for $50 with a 2-year contract.

Not too shabby, Radio Shack. This phone is essentially the Thunderbolt without the front facing camera and Verizon is still offering that phone for $250. Not to mention the fact that this phone is “Lindsay Lohan red” is enough to grab it some attention from looky-loo’s and passer by’s. Just try to stay out of trouble after picking up this red head.

Motorola Employee Confirms Gingerbread Update for Droid X, Pro and 2

Apparently, some Droid Pro and Droid 2 Global owners have been having issues with corporate sync and have hit up the Motorola Support forums in search of help. It was in these forums that a Motorola employee chimed in to address current issues with Exchange Activesync, commenting that the problem will be fixed with the upcoming Gingerbread update for both these devices. He also went on to say that the Droid X will be included as well.

Seeing how the Droid X software testing program was made available for some, they might be the first to receive the 2.3 update sometime by the end of the second quarter. This will be followed up by the Droid 2/Global and Pro devices. According to Droid-Life, they have word that Motorola has all but completed their Gingerbread builds for all these handsets and is simply waiting on word from Verizon to approve and push them out.

A carrier holding back a firmware update? Haven’t heard that one before (sarcasm). Have any of you guys been experiencing issues with your corporate sync on your Moto handsets? You wont have to wait too much longer for these bugs to be fixed and will even get a taste of Gingerbread in the process.

Apps of the Day [5/23]: Robotek, eBuddy XMS, and More

Posted: 23 May 2011 03:41 PM PDT

A new week means 5 more days of daily apps. Were kicking off Monday with a selection of useful tools and fun games for everyone to enjoy. Whether you like music-based puzzle or are simply looking for a free way to SMS your pals, you’ll find what you need below. We’re scouring the Android Market daily to find what’s good, but if you have any suggestions for our Apps of the Day roundup, let us know below!

BITS Widget – BITS Widget is a unique application. No, widgets themselves aren’t unique. But the ability to effectively “create” your own widget surely is. The name is very fitting – you take “bits” such as news, weather, time, date and more and fit them into whatever spaces you want. Fun tidbit – “BITS” actually stands for Bits is the Stuff. Makes sense. You can try the app out for free for 15 days, but you’ll need to purchase a license key in-app afterward. [Market]

Robotek – Robotek is a weird looking game, but weird doesn’t always translate to bad. In fact, weird in this case translates to a resounding “freaking awesome”. The premise: robots have taken over your world and it’s up to you to get it back. Trek across 200 different levels in an attempt to obliterate the combinations of aluminum and oil. Graphics are very polished, sound effects and music are top notch, and best of all, it’s free! (It is, however, supported by in-app purchases.) [Market]

Frontier Defence – This game takes another interesting take on the fast-growing tower defense genre. This time, your fortress is being invaded by villainous monsters of all shapes, sizes and abilities. At the forefront, it’s not much more different from the dozens of other tower defense games in the market, but it boasts decent graphics, solid gameplay and looks to be a modest time waster. The only thing we can’t get with is its price of $4.26. [Market]

Job Sniffer - Need a job? If you’re the type who goes door to door looking for work, you won’t always be at your computer. Job Sniffer allows you to set what type of job you’re looking for and in which location. After you define your criteria, the application will ping Indeed to look for those jobs and push them straight to your phone. It’s quite simple to use, provides a very useful function and is free. [Market]

eBuddy XMS – If you’re looking for an ideal way to send and receive unlimited, free SMS messages than look no farther than eBuddy XMS. You could call it a BBM clone, and in a way it achieves the same thing, but this messaging app excels in its cross-platform compatibility and the ability to send and receive picture messages as well. While the added hassle of getting your friends on eBuddy, adding them to your contacts, and migrating over to a new messaging standard keeps us from fully embracing the concept, you might get more mileage out of this one. [Market]

Mr. MixIt – The concept is simple. Take two separate halves of an image, place each on a turntable, and “scratch” a mix to solve the puzzle. Sound a bit confusing? Check out this demo/trailer for the game that combines puzzle solving and DJ spinning. We like the musical elements of the game, and the idea seems promising. We would like a bit more variety, in the end, however (especially for the $1 price tag). [Market]

HTC Flyer Unboxing and Hands-On With Scribe Pen [Video]

Posted: 23 May 2011 02:45 PM PDT

This image has no alt text

Some notes about the video:

  • I know “tablet-ized” isn’t a word.
  • They’re calling this version of HTC Sense 2.1, but built for tablets. It’s still closer to 3.0 than 2.1.
  • While the battery isn’t removable, you can remove the top white grip to access the microSD card slot.
  • The charging and data sync port is NOT standard microUSB at second glance.

Welp, it’s been a day since the HTC Flyer was made available for sale at Best Buy here in the United States and we’ve gotten our hands on it. It’s the same device we saw debuted back in February, but my initial comparisons now compared to then is that the software is much better. Considering the units we played with before weren’t final, this was to be expected. But more than that it’s solid, I actually found it quite enjoyable.

The device is still very snappy without a dual core processor and the HTC Scribe pen is one of the most mesmerizing things I have used on any tablet. I’m still a bit perplexed about the absence of Honeycomb, but HTC did say the Flyer would be upgradeable to Android 3.1. The unboxing video and very brief look at the device is above and I’ve pasted some specs you might care about below. Be on the lookout for our full review and more HTC Flyer coverage coming soon.

  • 1.5 single core processor by Qualcomm
  • 16GB of internal storage
  • 7 inch display with HTC Scribe functionality
  • 1.3 front facing camera, 5 megapixel rear camera
  • 1GB of RAM
  • Android 2.3 with HTC Sense 2.1 (optimized for tablets)
  • 4,000 mAh battery
  • WiFi (up to N) and Bluetooth 3.0

Call Recipients Hit with Overage Charges Thanks to Sprint’s Google Voice Integration

Posted: 23 May 2011 01:11 PM PDT

This image has no alt text

The switch to Google Voice integration on Sprint brings along the many benefits of Google’s call routing and voicemail service, but it comes with one major caveat, as some users are discovering. When a user opts to assign their Google Voice number as their main Sprint number, recipients of calls are being hit with overage charges. The reason? Google Voice numbers are viewed as landline numbers by the national number database, meaning calls received from such numbers will eat up minutes as if they are coming from a landline. The Sprint user won’t experience such charges — their minutes are free — so most won’t even realize the gouging their friends and families are receiving.

Sprint is encouraging users to port their current Sprint number over to Google Voice rather than the other way around in order to avoid the problem altogether. Google Voice co-founder Vincent Paquet confirmed, and Sprint said there was no way to fix the issue. If you haven’t opted into Google Voice integration on Sprint and plan to do so soon, you’d be wise to keep your current number. Everyone’s anytime and mobile-to-mobile minutes will be better for it.

HTC ChaCha and Salsa Final Software Builds Leak

The HTC ChaCha and Salsa — those unique new Android handsets sporting a physical Facebook button for one touch access to the social networking giant — are poised for launch at the end of June, but a leak of the final software build for each handset is giving us an early look at what we can expect. Our first look at the two phones was hardware-only; HTC had not approved a software build ready for public viewing. It looks like the Android 2.3.3 ChaCha and Salsa will get a fairly original take on the HTC Sense software overlay (most noticeable on the ChaCha).

If you want an early look at the Facebook-laden software head over to the source link below to score the leaked builds.

Toshiba’s Honeycomb Tablet Pre-Order Priced at $449

Posted: 23 May 2011 12:14 PM PDT

A now-defunct pre-order page over at J&R is suggesting that Toshiba’s Honeycomb tablet, when it finally arrives, will be priced at $449 for a version housing 8GB of internal storage. Listed under the Thrive name we first saw in trademark filings a few weeks back, the 32GB variant is priced at $579.99.

For what you get, we aren’t arguing with the price. $450 for a 10.1-inch, Tegra 2 tablet rocking Android Honeycomb is enough to guarantee a good showing for the “coming soon” device. Yep, no word on a release date yet. Last we heard the thing was delayed until the end of summer, but hopefully this pre-orer is a sign of good things to come.

Amazon Eyeing Holiday Season for Launch of Tablets Priced at $349, $449 [RUMOR]

Posted: 23 May 2011 11:58 AM PDT

This image has no alt text

Amazon’s plan for a lineup of Android tablets is slowing being pieced together through a series of rumors emerging over the past week or so. We learned last week that the online retailer is aiming to bring at least two tablets to market, the Tegra 2 slate codenamed “Coyote” and a powerhouse Tegra 3 device known as “Hollywood.” Word is that the tablets are being aimed for a launch during the Holiday season, meaning they are still a way off, but we are now learning of the potential pricing scheme for the two.

It is said that the 7-inch Coyote will debut for an extremely reasonable $349 while the 10-inch Hollywood will go for a meager $449, a price we’d be willing to pay for a Honeycomb tablet of that size even without NVIDIA’s next-gen quad-core CPU. Take it as rumor for now, but given Amazon’s penchant for bargain pricing we’d say it could be very likely. Could we be looking at this Holiday season’s must-have gift?

Sprint Now Taking HTC EVO 3D, View 4G Pre-Orders

Posted: 23 May 2011 11:27 AM PDT

RadioShack isn’t the only place you can get your HTC EVO 3D pre-order on, as Sprint retail stores are now taking reservations for the upcoming handset without a confirmed release date. While the final price of the handset hasn’t been revealed (hint: it’s looking like the standard $199 on a two-year contract), the EVO 3D can be reserved by trading $50 for a Sprint gift card good towards the eventual purchase of the phone.

If you’re looking for the HTC EVO View 4G, the tablet can also be reserved with the same $50/gift card exchange. We suspect the final pricing on the slate will come in a bit higher then the eventual cost of the EVO 3D, however.

ASUS Eee Pad Transformer Overclocked to 1.4GHz

Posted: 23 May 2011 10:59 AM PDT

The Asus Eee Pad Transformer has been overclocked to 1.4GHz, taking the Tegra 2 processor buried within and pushing it past a Quadrant benchmark score of 4300. That’s a pretty hefty boost for the Honeycomb tablet that has been making waves lately mostly for the fact that it has been pretty hard to come by. The [relatively] affordable price tag doesn’t hurt.

If you have managed to get your hands on the Asus Eee Pad Transformer (and your chances are looking a lot better these days) and are the type that loves to tinker with your Android devices, you can head over to XDA Developers to grab the new Netformer kernel courtesy of netarchy. Then start pushing that CPU speed up, up, and away. Sure, battery life will suffer but think of the power you’ll get!

T-Mobile Details New Postpaid, Prepaid Unlimited Plan Offerings With Pair of Press Releases

Posted: 23 May 2011 08:39 AM PDT

This image has no alt text

You’ve probably heard rumblings of new plan options coming to postpaid and prepaid T-Mobile customers over the weekend, and now T-Mobile’s made it official. For postpaid customers, they’re offering plans with data options of 200MB, 2GB, 5GB or 10GB per month. Data is still considered unlimited, but you’ll get throttled after hitting your respective cap. It’s a great deal for those who don’t need a ton of speed as the 200MB plan comes in at just $10 per month.

Likewise, prepaid customers will feel the love, too. You folks can choose between two unlimited Monthly4G plans, with $50 getting you unlimited text, talk and data (up to 100MB of 4G, throttled afterward) and $70 getting you the same, but letting you eat data at high speeds up to 5GB before being throttled. And family plans get love, too. More details about those plans are here (postpaid) and here (prepaid) if you so desire.

Want an App But Don’t Want to Grant it Certain Permissions? Download the New CM7 Nightly

Posted: 23 May 2011 07:43 AM PDT

This image has no alt text

Far too often, we hear of users refusing to install or update an application because some permissions it asks for are invasive and fishy. We hear you – there have been more than enough malware scares to have us concerned. But those of you using CyanogenMod 7 are set to get a very andy tool pretty soon – the ability to revoke specific permissions from an application. Don’t want a certain application to have access to the net? Axe its ability to do just that. The process is simple, as per one reddit user’s quick walkthrough:

To use it:

  • CyanogenMod settings / Permissions / Enable management
  • Applications / Manage applications / tap on permissions to revoke

Revoked permission are marked by a strikethrough.

Revoking and reenabling permissions is applied instantly. Though, at least reenabling “Network communication” requires a reboot (revoking still works instantaneously).

Be warned, though, that revoking certain permissions from certain applications may bring about undesired results. If you encounter errors after doing so, the developer definitely shouldn’t be obligated to help. (Though it’d be awesome if they did!) In any case, the option is there for those of you who want even more control over the apps on your phones. Find it for your specific phone at Team Douche’s mirrors now.
