Acer Iconia Tab A100 Delay Due to 7-inch Incompatibility with Honeycomb Says the Manufacturer

Posted: 25 May 2011 11:04 AM PDT

Wait, say what? Apparently, according to DigiTimes speaking with some “sources familiar with the matter,” Acer’s Iconia A100 (the smaller cousin of our already-reviewed Iconia Tab A500), have noted that Acer is blaming incompatibility issues with Honeycomb on a 7-inch device for their delay in launch. As you know, the Acer Iconia Tab A100 was supposed to be launched back on May 14th along with the 101 (the 3G version) – that was nixed! Of course we’re all waiting for this release because this set o’ tablets is going to be bargain priced and the A500 isn’t half bad, you know what I mean?

In this report DigiTimes reports that the Iconia Tab A100 will be rescheduled for August-September 2011. The reason for this, they say, is that, as industry sources have told them, Android 3.0 “has some compatible issues with 7-inch screen and Google is currently busy resolving other issues.” They go on to note the following as spoken or written directly to them by these same sources:

Since Android 3.0 was specifically designed for 10-inch display, Acer has found that many appliactions are incompatible with its 7-inch device. Therefore, the company has decided to postpone the launch of the product, the sources said.

Of course even if that is true, we all know that Android 2.2 Froyo and Android 2.3 Gingerbread work fine with tablet-sized Android devices as evidenced by the original Samsung Galaxy Tab and the new HTC Flyer, respectively. The industry sources speaking in this report continued by saying:

Acer believes that the 7-inch device will have its own unique market and will be suitable for female users as the device is lighter in weight, the sources said. But since the company is unwilling to give up the latest Android version, the company has decided to delay the launch of the product by about one quarter, the sources added.

Delays delays! What a world!

Sprint Motorola Phone possibly called the Photon 4G

Posted: 25 May 2011 09:54 AM PDT

We have been hearing for a while that Sprint would be getting another big device like the EVO soon but from Motorola, and that it was planned to be an Atrix-like device but with even more docks and accessories. We still don’t know much, but I’m sure Sprint will be spilling the beans soon so stay tuned on AndroidCommunity. We are now hearing reports that it will be a device very similar to the Droid X2 and will be launching on Sprint with a dual-core and 4G both, Take that Verizon.

The Motorola Photon 4G is the name we are reading, as odd as it may sound. It should feature a 4.3″ high-res qHD display just as the Droid X2 does, as well as the dual-core Tegra 2 CPU and be blazing along with some Sprint 4G speeds. This is still all very much unconfirmed information but we are reporting it as we hear it. According to Phandroid the Photon received WiFi certification back in April. Its model number will be MB855 on Sprint, but we didn’t find much on that.

Sprint and Motorola will be announcing something soon, we have a feeling it will be right along the lines of what is being reported above but anything is possible. Hopefully it will indeed have both 4G and a dual-core CPU because devices from Verizon seem to have one or the other lately and not both. Just like the LG Revolution.

Update: Sprint Event Scheduled for June 9th.

Sprint / Motorola Event Scheduled for June 9th [Dual-Core Ahoy?]

Posted: 25 May 2011 09:49 AM PDT

We’ve just received an invite to an event that’ll be taking place at the beginning of next month, June 9th 2011 at 30 minutes after noon all the way over in New York. We’ll be there with bells on, of course, and we’ll be bringing you all the coverage your heart can handle sooner than anyone else – you can bank on it! Meanwhile, lets talk a little bit about what they might be revealing as this event.

One of our first notions is that this is the Photon 4G, device that would effectively be a re-branding of the DROID X2 that’s currently sitting pretty with Verizon. Take a look at our full review of that device courtesy of Cory. That would certainly be an alright move by Sprint, yes? A new dual-core never hurt anybody.

The other option, one that may be one in the same with the Photon, is an ATRIX 4G-like device with “better dock accessories.” This is what we’ve been tipped off to by the underground. What would that be? Could it be a dual-core phone with accessories that work and have worked since the DROID X? Did you know that DROID X accessories work with DROID X2 handsets? How does that seem to you? Would you like a Sprint 4G version of the X2?

ALSO note that the theme of the invite is black lines and squares of color. This might just be a stylistic choice on the part of the designer of the invite itself, but it does remind one of Piet Mondrian‘s paintings. Maybe the Motorola Mondrian or Sprint Square 4G is in order.

We’ll let you know!

Samsung Hercules Pre-Order listed at MobileCityOnline, Nice photoshop guys

Posted: 25 May 2011 09:32 AM PDT

Apparently MobileCityOnline has some details that the rest of the world does not, or they just wanted to be first with a Pre-Order for the “un-official” Samsung Hercules. This phone has yet to be announced but should be a strong device for T-Mobile, see more information on the Hercules here.

I must say that MobileCityOnline has some great photoshop skills. I’m not sure if this is a joke, or just a quick shop job. What you see in the photo above is the Samsung Infuse 4G with a T-Mobile branding and that cute and strong Hercules guy photoshopped on the device.

The Samsung Hercules is not even official yet, and we don’t have a lot of details so to already have a pre-order up and with a huge price like they have listed your best bet is to enjoy the comedy in the picture and then probably wait for more information. Either way we found this mildly entertaining and just had to share it with all of you. Again the pre-order for the Samsung Hercules can be found here.

Samsung Galaxy Tab 7″ 3G on sale for $259 at Woot

Posted: 25 May 2011 08:52 AM PDT

No Woot-off going on today but the ever so popular woot.com does have a little android treat for sale today. For those that don’t know Woot they have one sale a day, and that is it (excluding woot-offs). So if you want to get in on the action you better act fast. If you’re looking for a great way to get into an android tablet at a low price this would probably be your best bet. They have the 16GB Wifi AND 3G Samsung Galaxy Tab from Sprint for $259.

The Galaxy Tab 7″ is still a great tablet and has one of the best screens around with that Super AMOLED. It has a huge development community over at XDA, and should be getting Gingerbread sometime very soon this story. You all probably know the new line of Samsung Tablets are headed to store shelves any day now.

Will you wait for the new and super thin Galaxy Tab line, or save your pennies and get the Tab 7″ on sale here? Apparently all the new Samsung Tabs will be shipping with Android 3.1 so that is great news. It may be enough to keep you waiting and pass on the 7″ but that is for you to decide. Check out how thin the Tab 8.9 is in this hands-on video. Either device is a great choice and if you plan to buy from Woot you better do so in a hurry before it sells out.

Motorola Droid X 2.3 Gingerbread OTA starting Friday

Posted: 25 May 2011 08:42 AM PDT

Looks like we have just got the final word that the Motorola Droid X will be getting Android 2.3 Gingerbread starting this Friday. We have mentioned this a few times over the last few weeks, even yesterday we mentioned a slew of Verizon Droid devices getting 2.3 soon. Apparently the 2.3 update was approved back at the first of May, but better late than never right.

So the official word is Friday May 27th the Droid X will start getting the OTA update being pushed by Verizon. We are not sure if it will be Android 2.3 or 2.3.4 but we have reached out the our Verizon PR contact and will update when we know more. We also asked about the Android 2.3 update for the Droid X2 that was just released. You can see our review on that phone here. Hopefully the X2 will get the update soon like its older brother.

We mentioned many Motorola Droid devices would be getting the update in this story here, there was no talk of the Droid X2 in that either but we have a feeling the wait shouldn’t be to long. So get ready for Friday and start hitting that update button all you Droid X users. Here’s what we heard from our Verizon contact so far.

Hey there,

Verizon Wireless will begin pushing Android 2.3, Gingerbread, to the DROID X by Motorola on Friday. Enhancements include a download manager app, a refreshed user interface, app grouping and more. Customers can visit www.verizonwireless.com/droidxsupport for more information about the update.

Thanks and let me know if you have any additional questions.

LG Revolution Hands-On and Unboxing

Posted: 25 May 2011 08:40 AM PDT

As you may have heard this morning, the LG Revolution is official and it’s got both a release date (May 26th, 2011) and a price ($249.99 with new 2-year contract and data plan) on Verizon wireless. And it’s running on 4G LTE! Well wouldn’t you also know it – we just happened to have gotten this device in the mail today for review! It’s come in the same package as the Xperia PLAY (which you can also order now from Verizon) and it’s got a box that reminds us instantly of a couple of other related items – the HTC ThunderBolt and the LG Optimus 3D. Brand coincidence? No way! Let’s have a peek at this device and sneak around its insides!

This device is only the third device in the world to support Verizon’s 4G LTE network and totes a 1GHz Snapdragon processor blasting out of a 4.3-inch TFT LCD display at 480 x 800 pixel resolution. This little monster also has an HDMI jack, is able to connect via WiFi b/g/n and Bluetooth 3.0, and has a couple of cameras along the lines of 5-megapixels with 720p HD video recording capability on the back and 1.3-megapixels for video chat on the front.

Of course you’ll be able to use this device as a mobile hotspot connecting up to 8 devices to LTE via wifi, there’s Bing search and mapping, Swype, and a couple other unique apps pre-installed. — The most important of which is, of course, Netflix.

Yes, Netflix streaming over Verizon’s 4G LTE network running through HDMI output. This is such an important combination it makes my head leak out all sorts of digital nonsense juice. Also take note (in the video you’re about to see) how similar this device is in form to the LG Optimus 3D, which we’ve also got on hand for comparisons. The two biggest differences are that the Revolution obviously doesn’t have two cameras on the back AND that it doesn’t have curved glass on the front. But the boxes are very similar! Look at those boxes!

Now what I need YOU to do is tell me what YOU want to know about this device. Everything you want to know, all tests you want us to put this device through, how many cliffs you want us to toss it off to see how well it fares, everything. What is it you want to see this phone perform?

Stay tuned for a full review just as soon as you let us know what you’d like to see!

Sony Ericsson Xperia PLAY Hands-On and Unboxing [Verizon]

Posted: 25 May 2011 08:09 AM PDT

Well what do you know? We got a PlayStation phone in the mail! This device is one of Verizon’s newest handsets, it being produced by Sony Ericsson and of course it being the very first and only PlayStation Certified smartphone in the world. It’s running Android 2.3.2 Gingerbread, connects to data via Verizon’s 3G network, and it comes in a rather unexciting box. It’ll sell itself, I swear! Inside the device you’ll find more than just guts, you’ll find a perfectly usable set of PlayStation controls including flat joysticks, directional pad, and four PlayStation buttons. There’s also a start button, a select button, and an extra Android menu button so you don’t have to reach all the way up to the side of the display. Left and Right buttons are up top (behind the display when open) and a volume dongle sits in the middle. Lets get our hands on it and see how it goes!

This device has been in production (or at least whispered about) since the beginning of time it seems. A year ago or so we were just starting to hear that the device would be a reality, a PlayStation phone in the works – wow! Then the big news bit came: it would be working on Android – with Gingerbread! The excitement grew and grew! Then we got our first glimpses of the device and wondered where the joysticks where – boy were we fooled! Then it was said to be carried by Verizon, running as a Sony Ericsson Xperia device, and we pulled our spleens out in excitement because it was real, there was really a PlayStation phone in the works!

And now here it is. It’s a phone that runs Android Gingerbread, it’s optimized to do so, and it’s easily the nicest Xperia device in production right this moment. Have a look at our unboxing video and get pumped up because – oh what’s that – there’s another phone in the box! ALSO note: noticeably absent is the Sony Ericsson boot animation we know appeared on the Euro version of this device (as seen here.) Does this absence point toward some sort of reason why the device was released in the USA last amongst essentially all countries in the world?

Also what I want / need you citizens to do is ask us all sorts of questions about this device – what do you want to know?

We’re here to answer all the questions and put this device through ALL the tests!

Stay tuned!

Galaxy Tab 10.1 “a few days away” with Android 3.1 onboard!?

Posted: 25 May 2011 03:00 AM PDT

I am really looking forward to the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 hitting the market for folks to get hands on. I know I am not the only one. We put up a review not long ago of the Galaxy 10.1 that was handed out at Google I/O and we liked the thing pretty well. The tablet we laid our hands on was packing Android 3.0.1 under the hood. There is now evidence surfacing directly from Samsung that the Galaxy Tab 10.1 may in fact be packing Android 3.1 when it hits stores.

As you can see in the photo here the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 product page, the description now lists Android 3.1 as the OS behind the scenes. All the other hardware remains the same with the 1280 x 800 10.1-inch screen, 1GHz Tegra 2 dual-core processor, and 65536MB of storage. The Tab 10.1 also has a 7000mAh battery for all day run time. The front camera is a 2MP unit and the rear camera is a 3MP offering.

To add another wrinkle to the saga of the Galaxy Tab 10.1 a tweet also surfaced that said the tablet is only days away. Granted some might consider the June 8 launch date that has been talked about for a long time now to be days away, those days just happen to add up to weeks. That June 8 launch may be delayed a bit to allow the Tabs to get Android 3.1. We will have to wait for more information to be sure when the 10.1 is shipping.

HTC “reviewing” locked bootloader policy after Android feedback

Posted: 25 May 2011 12:26 AM PDT

HTC has confirmed that it is “reviewing the issue and our policy around bootloaders” in a move that may see the company backtrack on its locked-down Android smartphones. According to the HTC Facebook page, user satisfaction “is a top priority” and – perhaps a little tongue in cheek, given how virulently some of the Android faithful have reacted – thanks users for their “willingness to share” feedback.

HTC wouldn’t be the first company to reverse policy on bootloader locking. Sony Ericsson impressed modders earlier this year after it confirmed it would be allowing bootloader access to certain 2011 Android models, after getting similarly strong feedback.

Now, there’s no guarantee that HTC will decide unlocking is in its best interest, but we know for a fact the company is aware of the bootloader cloud hanging over the HTC Sensation and how that’s pushing some power-users toward Samsung’s Galaxy S II.

Update on Bootloaders

Thanks so much for providing feedback, we hear your concerns. Your satisfaction is a top priority for us and we’re working hard to ensure you have great experiences with our phones. We’re reviewing the issue and our policy around bootloaders and will provide more information soon. Thank you for your interest, support and willingness to share your feedback.

[Thanks to everyone who sent this in!]

Amazon Nearly Prepared for Samsung Galaxy Player 4.0

Posted: 24 May 2011 03:19 PM PDT

Remember back a million years ago, aka January of this year, when we did an odd review of some Samsung commercials advertising a device that looked awfully similar to an iPod Touch? Turns out that product is FINALLY nearly ready to be sold in the USA, and by the looks of things, it’ll be coming to Amazon first. Also there’s certainly been more news on these little devices since those commercials, but not a whole heck of a lot on a release date – and that’s what matters most!

Amazon had the 4.0 version of this device up earlier today for a total cost of $229. Sound worth it to you? Let’s re-discuss some specs: it’s got a 1Ghz processor, 8GB of internal storage with a microSD card slot that’ll allow you to ad 32GB more, a 3.2 megapixel rear-facing camera, a VGA front-facing camera, Wifi b/g/n on the inside aside GPS, bluetooth, and Android 2.2 with Android Market access. Those of you that saw the device in the online store, thanks for the tips – did you purchase one? Are you now being offered refunds or something similar?

Once you get this device, you’ll be blasting forth with what’s essentially a Galaxy S phone without the phone part. No calling unless you can figure out how to turn the Wifi connection into a walky-talky or something similar. From there you’ll be able to play basically every media form an average person uses: MP3, WMA, Ogg, FLAC, AAC, AVI, MP4, 3GP, WMV, AST, MKV, and FLV, and of course the front-facing camera will facilitate video chat via Skype and Qik. Can you even wait? Once we’ve got a link back to the market for a working listing, (the original is now broken,) we’ll hook you up!

NFC-Laden Nexus S 4G to Get Some Action

Posted: 24 May 2011 02:57 PM PDT

Did you know that the Nexus S (both in its original form and its newer 4G state on Sprint) is fully ready to work with NFC mobile payments? Google knows, they built it. Sprint knows, they’re apparently working on a deal with Google right this second to release a mobile payments service on the 26th of May, 2011. This service will, if it’s real, be available for US customers of Sprint Nextel, so says “three people familiar with the matter” to Bloomberg. Three’s better than one, right?

The three mystery sources told Bloomberg the following bit of text, holding nothing back in a whirlwind of yellow and black, with a dust cloud of blue red yellow and green flying behind them!

The service will let consumers with specially equipped phones that run on Google’s Android operating system pay for goods and redeem coupons with their handsets, said the people, who wouldn’t be identified because the plan isn’t public. The technology is available on the Android-powered Nexus S from Sprint, the third-largest US wireless operator.

Google is rolling out so-called near field communication technology, which lets people pay at NFC-equipped cash registers with a flick of their phone, to boost revenue from mobile advertising and discounts.

Of course the three other major US carriers AT&T, Verizon Wireless, and T-Mobile are part of a separate venture for NFC by the name of Isis NFC – for more information on that company, check out SlashGear’s most recent news bit. Plans for Sprint to launch ahead of all these other networks is coming to fruition it seems – last we spoke about this it was early April and SPrint was supposed to be working with coupon revenue rather than a percentage of the money spent.

What do you think, community, you think NFC is becoming a reality? News from our hero in Japan Ewdi notes that everyone and their auntie is already using electronic payments via their cellphones, and as everyone knows, if Japan does it first, there’s at least a 10% chance the USA will follow in kind! Can’t wait to pay for gumballs with my Nexus S!

Pantech Releasing 5″ Android Device, Can’t Decide if it’s a Tablet or Phone

Posted: 24 May 2011 02:00 PM PDT

In my opinion a 5″ screen is smack dead in the middle of the dead zone that exists between tablets and phones. While the Dell Streak used this same screen size, it was far from the being a top seller, mostly because people thought it was just too big. If you’re going to get a tablet, 10.1″ seems to be the magic number, but at 7″, both the Nook Color and Samsung Galaxy Tab are great tablets. A 5″ device though, leaves you wanting more screen as long as you’re going that big to begin with. It appears that Pantech and I don’t see eye to eye.

Korean blog Bodnara has gotten us a first look at Pantech’s Gingerbread powered Vega No. 5. The umm… “device” will be jumping into the space, which had been home exclusively to the Dell Streak (with Samsung’s Galaxy S Wi-Fi 5 soon on the way as well). The tablet/phone is pretty decked out with a spec sheet as strong as we’ve seen. 1.5 GHz dual-core Snapdragon, 1 GB of DDR2 RAM, dual cameras (8MP in back), 16 GB built in storage and NFC will make this a beast of a whatever it is when it lands in China and Korea later this month.

Where the weirdness starts is the screen. With specs this top-of-the-line and a screen that big, its weird to see the Vega No. 5 be announced with a WVGA resolution of 800×480, especially given the increasing prominence of qHD, and the increased screen size to stretch those pixels across. What really gives this phone its identity crisis though is that it is said to have “phone capabilities.” With tablets already struggling in some cases to find their roll (aside from being awesome) this seems like an interesting trek down that road of ambiguity Dell’s already gone down.

Obviously people out their are disagreeing with me, as phones like the Infuse 4G and the rumored Samsung Hercules test the waters between the 4.3 and 5″ ranges. Unfortunately there’s no news about this, seriously I still don’t know what to call it… about the Vega No. 5 coming to America so we’ll have to wait and see if it can show me I was wrong about the 5″ size range.

Droid X(2) Essentials Bundle over 80% Off Retail [Update: Glitch in Cart System]

Posted: 24 May 2011 01:22 PM PDT

Verizon must be feeling generous. In celebration of the Droid X2′s launch they’re giving you a monster deal on accessories that will work with either the original Droid X or Droid X2. The bundle is, as the website points out, worth $145 if purchased separately, but for this week they’re selling it for only $19.97. The package includes several handy accessories and is an awesome deal for anyone who’s been eyeing any of the included goodies.

UPDATE: While I had heard there had been potential issues, this didn’t occur for me since I’m not a Verizon customer, but if you’re already signed in the bundle will show up as $49.97. To get the $19.97 price you need to sign out, search for “essentials bundle” and add it to your cart before signing in. Drop a comment if there are still issues.

The included accessories are a wall charger, vehicle charger, HDMI cable, Multimedia dock and vehicle dock. Both the wall charger and HDMI cable are technically there to be used with the multimedia dock, allowing you to set up a station to charge your phone, and stream HD pictures, movies, or music over the HDMI port, but both have plenty of other value. The wall charger is a handy backup in case you should lose your original or want to keep one at home and have another for on the go. The HDMI cord is a nice bonus, especially since neither iteration of the Droid X comes pre-packaged with one.

The vehicle dock and charger can be handy for keeping your phone alive over long drives, but most importantly makes your phone a full-blown GPS replacement. Naturally the value of this combo depends on your situation, but for most people who have to drive to work each day, this could be a godsend.

Once again, the deal is good only for this week, so if you’ve been thinking about getting any of these accessories for your Droid X, now’s the time to do it. You can get the deal here at Verizon’s online store.

Amazon Free App of the Day Reminder [App Mini Review]

Brilliant, is what I am calling this simplistic little application. Developer cody_04l is one of the thousands of users of the Amazon Appstore across the nation and also a fellow who tries his best to remember that the appstore has a free app deal every single day. Sadly, noone can remember everything, thusly Cody created an app to help: the Amazon Free App of the Day Notifier. We gave it a shot and tested it out and guess what? It works like a charm.

This application is also just known as Appstore Reminder, and it’s nothing more than a checking app that sees Amazon’s store, judging each day whether or not they’ve got a new free app up for download. You can set the time of day you’d like for the Appstore Reminder to remind you of a new app and your reminder will be pushed to you much in the same way an email notification would. Totally worth it methinks. You can also test out the app to make sure your reminder will work before actually setting it to its daily job.

Once you’ve got a new notification, all you’ve got to do is tap the notification in your notifications window and it’ll disappear while you are transported to the Amazon Appstore (you’ll have to have it downloaded, of course,) where you’ll be allowed to check out and grab the newest free app available. Very helpful indeed!

Cody (who affiliates himself with RaueSoft Development) would like your feedback on the app so feel free to post it here or back in the thread he dropped at XDA.

Download version 1.0 [here] and remember that it’s not a final perfect build.

Acer Android / Intel Tablet Waiting in the Wings

Posted: 24 May 2011 12:17 PM PDT

Remember that one time when we had an awesome tablet by the name of Acer Iconia Tab A500 and we totally reviewed it FTW? That fancy bunch over at DigiTimes have done it again with their loose-lipped partners and have revealed the next step AFTER the A500, namely an Oak Trail device, and that means Intel! This tablet will supposedly run Android 3.0 (pointing toward the notion that Android 3.1 wont be rolling out to everyone as fast as predicted,) and that it’ll be a 10-inch tablet retail released in July.

The actual release date being in July means that if this device is real, we’ll be seeing it much sooner. This re-up will be going into direct competition with the ASUS Transformer and the Galaxy Tab 10.1 – thusly it’d better be inexpensive. On the other hand, non-ARM might be the push an Android tablet needs to jump out ahead of the pack. OR perhaps because the general consumer public knows about processors just about as much as they know about space travel, an Intel chip will make no difference at all?

An Inte/Android tablet PC! What a wondrous bit of magnificence that will be! Another slightly less important point is that the same source speaking with DigiTimes noted that Acer is thinking about an Oak Trail MeeGo tablet. MeeGo! What in the world? They’d be better off investing in a Eclair handset than a MeeGo tablet if ye be asking me.

Seeeduino ADK Provides Inexpensive Android Open Accessory Kit Alternative

Posted: 24 May 2011 11:52 AM PDT

Just a couple of weeks ago we were at Google I/O hearing the newest word on the future of Android. In the keynote speeches that blew the ears off everyone in the room (and the internet, since it was streaming,) we learned about Android Open Accessory. This is a new project in which Google will help out and support developers hoping to connect Android devices to other real-world functional electronics like robots, lamps, and more robots. With this came an announcement about a kit you’d be able to buy for a cool $400.

Now we’ve got word of a cheap alternative to the $400 Android Open Accessory Kit for Developers. This newer, less expensive version of the platform will also allow you to use Google’s ADK to make custom Android accessories running Android 2.3.4 all the way up to Android 3.1. Instead of four big ones, you’ll be spending a grand total of $80 USD. That’s a pretty deep discount. Will this new version stand up to the test of time and harsh judgement of developers in the field? That we will have to wait and see.

You’re already able to pre-order this new “Seeeduino ADK” from Seeed Studio, the actual units shipping out June 20th. So far away!
