Thunderbolt Multimedia Dock, Extended Battery & Wireless Charging Battery Door Leaked Posted: 15 Mar 2011 04:29 PM PDT
Although Verizon has finally officially announced the HTC Thunderbolt’s launch today – it’ll be in stores this Thursday, for your info – we haven’t gotten many details on what you can pick up beside it. New images sent to us confirm they will be offering an extended battery and a multimedia dock with it, though. The battery is 2750 mAh – a step up from the stock 1400 inside the thing – and will run you about $50. Sounds like it might be worth the investment considering how much juice you’ll need to keep those LTE radios going. Staying in the realm of batteries, there’s a special battery door going for $39.99 that’ll allow you to charge your device wirelessly using induction charging technology. For $59.99, you can grab the multimedia charging dock that’ll prop your device up in landscape mode and – well – charge the thing. We’re sure there’s some sort of port other than micro-USB on there – it wouldn’t be called a multimedia dock, otherwise. We’re not sure exactly what’s on here, though. It’s a toss up between mini HDMI and a 3.5mm headphone jack. We’ll be digging for more information on that, obviously. What’s more is that it not only has room for an external battery should you choose to install one, but it can also charge a second battery while your phone is sitting inside. It’s clear Verizon and HTC have thought long and hard about the power requirements of the Thunderbolt and want to afford every option possible to the end-user. Less exciting stuff include a couple of holsters and cases. It wasn’t said whether or not any of these accessories would be available at launch, but we’re not going to assume they will be. (We all saw how long it took the EVO’s more desirable accessories to come to market.) Any of you thinking about picking any of this stuff up? [Thanks, anon!] |
Things We Missed, You Shouldn’t [March 15th] Posted: 15 Mar 2011 04:01 PM PDT
A couple of major device announcements were made today and a bunch more unannounced devices were leaked. It was a good day of news, but there is more that we didn’t get a chance to check out. Below lies a lot of good stuff so be sure to take a look at your earliest convenience.

Carphone Warehouse Sells 1 Million Androids and Sees 2000% Increase in Sales, Debuts Unique Ad Posted: 15 Mar 2011 04:01 PM PDT
Carphone Warehouse – a major mobile device retailer in the United Kingdom – has announced that they’ve sold over 1 million Androids last year, a 2000% increase over the year before. Carphone Warehouse are sworn promoters of Android with their shops plagued with little green robots, and now they have a new ad to let folks sitting at home know that as well. It’s really one of the best general Android ads I’ve seen. (Though I still don’t think it tops ads from Korea – there’s nothing like a dancing green robot.) Check the video out above. SPB to Bring Tablet Version of Mobile Shell to Android [Video] Posted: 15 Mar 2011 03:08 PM PDT
SPB – the folks who are making an Android version of their mobile shell application – are working on a tablet version. It explains why development on the phone version may be taking a while as that one is still in beta with a close-knit group of folks testing it. Unfortunately, the applications won’t be available for public download – they’re working on OEM partnerships instead. It’s a business move that means you may never be able to use this. Still, it’s pretty and we’re excited about what they’re doing. There’s a convenient video above that’ll help you get an idea as to what you can expect should you be lucky enough to buy a phone with this included. [via Android Community] |
Netflix for Android APK Leaked Posted: 15 Mar 2011 02:33 PM PDT
What do we have here? One of the most sought-after applications that has yet to be released? Someone has gotten their hands on this .APK file that seems to install Netflix for Android. Don’t rejoice yet, though: most folks can’t get the app to actually stream any video, including yours truly. I can at least manage my queue, though, which is decent I suppose. (Running a stock Samsung EPIC 4G on 2.2, by the way.) You can grab the .APK file here and try it for yourself. [via Android Police] |
HTC Thunderbolt’s User Manual Now Online Posted: 15 Mar 2011 02:12 PM PDT
If you’ve been waiting to get the HTC Thunderbolt and want to pass some time until Thursday, why not check out this shiny new user manual that has popped up on Verizon’s website? It’s the usual round of information you’d expect to know about any Android phone, but there may be a few surprises tucked beneath over 330 pages of text. Check this .PDF file out to get started. Add T-Mobile, Sprint to List of Carriers Offering Free Communication to Japan Posted: 15 Mar 2011 01:53 PM PDT
Just as we expected, Sprint and T-Mobile have followed Verizon and AT&T in offering free calls and texts to Japanese residents following a devastating tsunami caused by one of the biggest earthquakes ever to be recorded. Both carriers’ promotions are retroactive from March 11th, but T-Mobile’s ends on March 31st while Sprint’s will end on April 10th. Check here for more details on Sprint’s release efforts, and T-Mobile’s press release can be found below.

Facebook has just issued an update to their application in the Android market. Version 1.5.2 adds the ability to upload photos to not only groups, but your friends’ profile walls too. It’s yet another addition in Facebook’s race to get their application up to par with the iOS offering. Other changes include fixes to allow images to be uploaded in their correct orientations and improvements to the homescreen when viewing it in landscape mode. (Previously, the UI would not adjust to a user switching orientations or opening their keyboards when on that screen.) You can find the upgrade in the Android market now. |

The folks at MobileSyrup have pinged Telus and asked them what’s up with updates for various Android handsets. Of note were the HTC Desire and Desire HD: both are said to be getting Gingerbread sometime this Spring. (It wasn’t said if this would include the latest version of HTC Sense or not.) Other phones include the Motorola Milestone which is now slated to get Froyo in other regions soon. The Samsung Galaxy Apollo and the LG Shine Plus will both get upgrades, with the latter actually getting Gingerbread instead of Froyo. Fun times ahead for you Telus folks indeed. |
Here’s a Full List of Unity3D Games for Android Posted: 15 Mar 2011 12:45 PM PDT
Following the release of Unity3D’s SDK for Android, many titles have been ported over from iOS or have been released from the ground up for Android. A ton of these titles offer quality gaming experiences, but it’s not exactly a walk in the park to find them. The folks at Unity have compiled a list of titles developed using their engine that is now available for Android, though. You may not be interested in every single one of them, but it’s worth taking a look through all of them – you’re sure to find a gem or two. Find the full list below courtesy of Droid Gamers.

Video Chat With Your iOS Friends Using Qik Posted: 15 Mar 2011 11:08 AM PDT
Skype has just announced that their newly-acquired Qik has released Video Connect for iOS devices. The app enables iOS users to video call without using Face Time, and it means those of us on Android have another way to chat with our Apple fanatic friends. We were hoping Skype would just release a version of their app with video calling built-in – something they promised would happen by now – but we’ll take what we can get. Tell your friends on iOS to download it in their app store, and make sure you’ve already gotten it from the Android market. [via IntoMobile] |
Amazon App Store Titles Adding Up Posted: 15 Mar 2011 10:30 AM PDT
Following Amazon’s announcement that Rovio’s Angry Birds Rio would be launched in their Android app store exclusively, the first crop of apps to be distributed through their store have popped up. There aren’t many surprises here: a few games, a couple of utility and productivity apps, and more are present. A total of 48 apps have apparently been added. We couldn’t check it out for ourselves, though, as we were met with a page with nothing but our recommendations whether or not we were logged in. We’ll be looking out to see if it comes back up, though I’m sure it’s nothing most of you will be rushing to see. [via Android Community]

New Images of the HTC Pyramid Surface Posted: 15 Mar 2011 09:45 AM PDT
Rumors of a dual-core handset from HTC began back in early February with whispers of the Pyramid, a device said to have a 4.3-inch qHD display and to be headed for T-Mobile by the middle of the year. It would supposedly be one of the first daul-core Snapdragon devices, but a new spec leak make no mention of the two cores. It gives the processor clock speed as 1.2GHz with 768MB of RAM. But those specs aren’t the best part, the new pictures of the device are. Also noted was the presence of dual cameras and that the handset would run Android Honeycomb. That last part we question a bit, but we suspect all will be set straight at CTIA. [via AndroidPolice]

HTC Thunderbolt will Be $299.99 at Best Buy after March 20th Posted: 15 Mar 2011 07:59 AM PDT
If you are planning to pick up your shiny new HTC Thunderbolt from Best Buy, you will want to make it in to the store before the end of the week. Though the retailer has confirmed they will have the Thunderbolt in stock come March 17th at a price of $249.99 on a two-year contract, once March 20th rolls around the price jumps up to $299.99. It’s hard to believe anyone anticipating this handset will wait a few extra days after the constant teasing we have been put through over the past two months, but don’t say we didn’t tell you.

If you are in a region supported by the update, you can grab it directly from Motorola’s support page. Now, how about that Gingerbread… [Thanks to everyone who sent this in!] |
