If you needed even more confirmation that T-Mobile’s going to be carrying the LG Optimus 2X as the T-Mobile G2x, look no further: this photo says it’s real and that it’ll be at CTIA once the doors swing open tomorrow. (Hell, we may even stumble across it tonight at an event T-Mobile usually shows up to.) T-Mobile is said to be announcing the phone sometime today or tomorrow, though they aren’t holding a huge press conference about it. We’ll be on the lookout for more as the hours move on. Samsung’s Galaxy Tab 8.9 to Have Customizations on Top of Honeycomb

Our friend Brandon from PocketNow somehow stumbled across some promotional materials Samsung will be using to highlight features of its new 8.9-inch Galaxy Tab expected to be announced here in Orlando tomorrow. (We’re secretly jealous because we were interrogated the moment we even looked at an unfinished booth.)

Anywho, Samsung’s looking to be the first OEM to customize Honeycomb as they’ll be debuting a new user interface called Live Panels. It has oversized versions of widgets found in other TouchWiz devices like Buddies Now, Agenda, Weather, News, etc.

It also implements a feature called “Mini Apps Tray” that’ll allow you to switch between bite-sized apps that won’t kick you back to the homescreen. We imagine things like a quick look at the weather and a notepad will be included among the 6 applications they’re starting with. We’ll have to get a better idea of this stuff tomorrow when Samsung unveils it so be sure to stick with us as we’ll be on hand to provide coverage.

CTIA Spring 2011 Preview (HTC, Samsung, LG, Sprint, T-Mobile, AT&T & More)

Posted: 21 Mar 2011 11:36 AM PDT

This image has no alt text

We’ve made it to Orlando, Florida for CTIA and we’ve been thinking about all we expect to see down here. As you might expect, the CES hangover is still going as even more tablets and even more 3D devices are expected to be on hand from a plethora of different manufacturers and carriers. This time around, though, we’ll get a fresh slate of new devices to get our sweaty palms on. Just what can you expect to see?

Sprint’s Big Outing With HTC, Samsung

Sprint and HTC are continuing their strong partnership as two new devices are expected to be announced tomorrow. The HTC EVO 3D is the “unofficial” sequel to the original EVO 4G released back in June of 2010. As the name suggests, 3D will make a splash on this device one way or another. It’s expected to house Qualcomm’s MSM8x60 1.2GHz Snapdragon dual-core processor with an Adreno 220 GPU, according to latest rumors. Its codename looks to be the HTC Shooter, but will have similarities to T-Mobile’s Pyramid. (More on this chipset in T-Mobile’s section below.)

As for Sprint’s tablet game, the HTC EVO View 4G is supposed to be their first non-Samsung tablet. Details on this thing are still scarce, but it’s said that this is simply Sprint’s version of the HTC Flyer which got its grand unveiling in Barcelona last month. A trademark filing earlier this month omitted any details about this being a tablet, but it didn’t say it wasn’t a tablet either. (In fact, it encompassed all things “smartphones and mobile devices”.) Here are more details on both these devices from HTC.

Sprint keeps things rolling as they’re going to be carrying a Samsung Nexus S with 4G radios inside. It would be the first time a carrier has taken a Nexus phone and added 4G radios. Sprint has been one of the few carriers willing to sell hardware that doesn’t come with a custom interface on top of Android, but the devices that meet that criteria aren’t exactly high-end beasts. The Nexus S will be their first. The device was formally announced today and we expect to see it at Sprint’s press conference tomorrow.

Sprint and Google have just announced a new feature for users of Google Voice – you’ll now able to use your Sprint number as your Google Voice which allows you to take all of the other benefits of the service without having to take on another phone number. You better believe we’ll be asking more about this in person.

Finally, the less-exciting Kyocera Echo is expected to receive a release date as it has finally passed the FCC. This phone was unveiled in New York just before Mobile World Congress kicked off, but was met with little fanfare as folks were hoping for a continuation of the aforementioned EVO line.

Samsung to Round Out the Galaxy Tab Family

Samsung has their own agenda as they look to launch a new size of the Samsung Galaxy Tab unveiled at Mobile World Congress last month. It’d be an 8.9 incher running Android 3.0 Honeycomb. We still have no specifics on what type of processor is inside – Samsung is one of few OEMs who have the luxury of using their own chipsets inside their handsets and tablets. They could elect to go with NVIDIA’s Tegra 2 chipset just as their 10 inch version has, but using their own Exynos processor isn’t out of the question. (They are reportedly doing the same with the Samsung Galaxy S II.)

That processor is pretty powerful as evidenced by video last month showing a game running at full 1080p and 60 frames per second. Exynos is said to be able to handle pushing out that same content in stereoscopic 3D and – to the surprise of many – at 10 more frames per second. Whatever route Samsung ends up going, they really can’t lose here.

Samsung could also be refreshing their 7-inch Galaxy Tab that was launched late last year, but no credible murmurs have come up suggesting as much. Any refresh would probably incorporate Honeycomb as Samsung is realizing that that version of Android will soon be the best option for users who want tablet-specific applications.

T-Mobile Makes Noise With HTC, LG

We fully expect T-Mobile to be out in full force. They were originally rumored to be the first American carrier to snatch the LG Optimus 2X up – it’ll apparently be known as the T-Mobile G2x. Its name suggests a continuation of a series that has run nothing but stock Android since its inception so don’t be surprised if LG’s custom skin isn’t sitting on top of it. (We’d like stock more, actually, and I’m sure many of you do too.) These rumors are supported by a spot on CTIA’s awards site that says two unnamed LG devices will be in the running for best smartphone.

T-Mobile’s expected to announce a launch date with that unveiling as rumors say it’ll share an April 20th release with the LG G-Slate – a 3D-clad Honeycomb tablet that was announced in Barcelona last month.

And as far as HTC goes, that long-rumored Pyramid – also known as the HTC Shooter after benchmark results were leaked – is anticipated. The Shooter will have an MSM8x60 processor and should be the fastest device HTC has put out yet. The processor is dual-core and is clocked at 1.2GHz with an Adreno 220 GPU – that’s supposed to deliver graphics performance that rivals the previous console generation. Unfortunately, benchmark results say this thing still can’t hold a candle to the latest from NVIDIA. New images and information about the device were leaked earlier today.

What’s AT&T Up To?

You’ve probably already learned that AT&T is looking to acquire T-Mobile USA in agreement with Deutsche Telekom, their parent company. We’re not sure if this announcement will be formally made tomorrow, but we’ll be asking about it regardless. As far as phones go, AT&T is now expected to carry a device they’re calling the LG Thrill 4G – their version of the Optimus 3D  with 4G radios. AT&T hasn’t set up a press conference to show anything off but they’ll be here in Orlando for a keynote and we’ll be meeting with them – let’s see if they have this and anything else to bring to the table.

More Tablets From More Manufacturers?

While the Samsungs, HTCs, and Motorolas of the world have already announced their tablet plans, rumors are still floating around about guys like Dell, Acer and Toshiba having Honeycomb offerings in store. (Toshiba’s tablet plans have been confirmed, but we have yet to see what they’re bringing to the table.) There isn’t much we can say here, though, as specifics have not yet been determined. We’ll be on the lookout for more on that before the show.

Apps Will Always Be at These Shows

It can’t be a show without a huge area full of app developers ready to show off their soft-wares. (See what I did there?) Opera is announcing the latest version of their Mini and Mobile browsers at the show and – to be honest – there are just too many other happenings to list them all here. We’ll be at the event scouring for the more interesting applications so you’ll see them on Phandroid if we come across anything.

Things kick off today in Orlando, so stick with Phandroid as we provide comprehensive coverage of everything going on down in Florida.

Samsung Stealth Gets Droid Branding, Costco Suggests April 7 Launch Date

Posted: 21 Mar 2011 09:59 AM PDT

Samsung’s entry into Verizon’s 4G LTE ranks debuted at CES under the placeholder name Samsung 4G LTE Smartphone, but since then all signs have pointed towards the Stealth names as the final moniker for the upcoming device. New info suggests the name may get an added boost with the addition of Droid branding.

A Costco leak not only calls the phone the Samsung 4G Droid Stealth, but also pegs the phone with an April 7th release date after a March 24th pre-sale. If this turns out to hold true, the HTC Thunderbolt won’t have sit alone as Verizon’s only 4G device for long.

ARCHOS Gen 9 Tablet to Boast 1.6GHz Dual-Core A9 CPU, Launching with Honeycomb in June

Posted: 21 Mar 2011 09:29 AM PDT

ARCHOS is at it again, improving their tablet lineup and pushing the boundaries of slate-style Android computing. While they typically don’t get as much hype as the big ticket brands like Motorola and Samsung, ARCHOS has managed to push out a few serviceable Android tablets over the past year, even if build quality has suffered at times. The latest effort, their Gen 9 series of tablets, sees a 1.6GHz dual-core ARM A9 CPU driving the action, which at the time ranks as one of the most powerful processor in an Android portable.

ARCHOS is also doing work within the Android software to support hard disk drives, and will feature up to 250GB of storage available in their Gen 9 series. You can also expect a 3G radio to be present. The whole shabang comes running on Android 3.0 Honeycomb, and should launch in June for 400 euros.

T-Mobile 3G Handsets to Be Rendered Obsolete by AT&T Merger

Posted: 21 Mar 2011 08:48 AM PDT

This image has no alt text

In case you have been resting under a rock somewhere, AT&T is in the process of buying out T-Mobile and merging the two companies into a singular (no, not Cingular) wireless conglomerate. As part of the deal, AT&T plans to re-purpose all of TMo’s 3G towers for the roll out of their LTE network, which should cover 95 percent of the country within two year’s time. The catch? Your 3G T-Mobile handset will be obsolete when that time comes, as confirmed by AT&T.

Seeing as how far off the problem is there is no news to share as to whether AT&T plans to compensate TMo subscribers locking into new two-year deals, but if you are a fan of magenta it may be wise to consider shorter-term contract options if you plan on picking up a new handset anytime soon.

Leaked Three UK Road Map Reveals the Galaxy S2 Mini, LG Optimus 3D and HTC Flyer Release Dates

Posted: 21 Mar 2011 08:18 AM PDT

A new leak by way of Three UK has revealed a Samsung handset that managed to slip under the radar while more flashy offerings like the Galaxy S II stole all the limelight. The Samsung Galaxy S2 Mini is set for an April release, and promises a handset more powerful than the original Galaxy S while shifting to a smaller 3.7-inch display form factor. On board is a 1.4GHz processor, Android 2.3, and HSPA+ 21Mbps connectivity.

Also detailed in the leak were the May release date of the HTC Flyer and the June launch of the LG Oprimus 3D on Three. Should be a fairly busy summer for the carrier.

HTC Pyramid Gets Pictured in the Wild [Update: New Specs Leak]

Posted: 21 Mar 2011 08:06 AM PDT

Last week we caught a glimpse of the upcoming HTC Pyramid in the form of some leaked marketing photos, but a new week brings us out first in-the-wild look at the device said to be sporting a 1.2GHz dual-core processor and qHD display. Two different sources snapped up photos that look to originate from the same source, both showing the Pyramid sitting comfortably next to the HTC Desire HD

The photos don’t add much more than we already knew, giving us the same view as before with a bit of added blur. Rumors places this phone as a GSM device headed for the newly AT&T-acquired T-Mobile, and we may hear an official announcement at CTIA this week.

[Update]: TMoNews has gotten their hands on some leaked specs for the HTC Pyramid, which their tipster claims will be launching on the network in June. While initial rumors gave the Pyramid a qHD display, the latest whispers say a rather bland 480×800 resolution is what to expect. Again, a 1.2GHz dual-core processor is cited, and the handset may come with 768MB of RAM. The real kicker for this HSPA+ handset is that it may be among the first to ship with Android 2.4, the OS expected to be announced at this year’s Google I/O.

HTC Droid Incredible 2 Appears in Best Buy’s System, Announcement Imminent?

There have been few rumblings from the Verizon camp as CTIA kicks off this week, but could they have a few announcements of their own in store? A new listing for the HTC Droid Incredible 2 in Best Buy’s Mobile Genie has appeared, meaning the retail giant is gearing up for the ability to transfer data from your old device to a shiny new Incredible 2.

[Update]: A tipster of our own is suggesting we might not want to read too deeply into this pic, but any sign of the Incredible 2 is a good sign by us.

Amazon Appstore May Launch Tomorrow, March 22nd

Posted: 21 Mar 2011 07:43 AM PDT

No official word has come down from Amazon just yet, but new rumors have popped up that the Amazon Appstor for Android will launch as early as tomorrow, March 22nd. The launch will coincide with a new app for Android devices for purchasing and installing applications directly to Android devices, though a web interface will allow for the purchasing of apps from a desktop computer as well.

We first heard of the Amazon Appstore back in the fall, and after countless leaks and rumors culminating in an early peak at the Appstore going online last week (and word of an Angry Birds Rio exclusive), the signs on the horizon suggests we will be seeing this third-party retail giant jumping into the app game very soon.

Official: LG Thrill 4G to Be AT&T’s Optimus 3D

Posted: 21 Mar 2011 07:33 AM PDT

This image has no alt text

When LG unveiled the Optimus 3D (pictured above) at Mobile World Congress, we knew it would only be a matter of time before we saw an announcement of the glasses-free 3D handset for the Unites States. An official press release from AT&T revealed the phone will land on their network under the LG Thrill 4G name, though release and pricing were not detailed.

The Thrill 4G retains the Optimus 3D’s dual-core, 1GHz CPU and 5MP dual-camera for 3D and HD picture and video capture. It will launch with Android 2.2 with an upgrade to 2.3 Gingerbread in the pipeline. AT&T did not provide official press photos, but we assume this one will look more or less the same as the Optimus 3D. Pertinent press release info snipped below.

LG Thrill 4G
The LG Thrill 4G will be exclusive to AT&T customers and reach AT&T stores in the coming months. Running the first dual-core, dual-channel 1 GHz processor in the U.S. and based on the Android 2.2 platform, LG Thrill 4G will be among the first to deliver a glasses-free 3D experience to U.S. customers and will allow users to shoot 3D video and 3D stills with the dual 5-megapixel stereoscopic camera. In addition to apps and games from Android Market, LG Thrill 4G will offer 3D content via the “LG 3D Space,” which houses 3D games, video clips and images for quick, convenient access.

Preloaded with 16 GB of memory (8 GB onboard plus an 8 GB MicroSD card), the LG Thrill 4G will record 3D video at 720p resolution and 2D at 1080p quality. The smartphone will be able to play video back in high definition through the HDMI-out port on the device or stream content wirelessly through DLNA technology.

Sprint customers currently are downloading an average of two ID packs per device. Sprint ID packs are free to download with an Everything Data plan.

"We are very pleased with the success of Sprint ID and excited to expand this rich mobile experience to customers with these two popular devices - Samsung Epic 4G and Samsung Galaxy Tab," said John Carney, senior vice president consumer marketing at Sprint. "Sprint ID handset sales have exceeded our expectations, which is proof that customers, especially those new to smartphones, want an easier way to get apps they’ll enjoy rather than searching through thousands of apps in Android Market™. As this data about ID pack downloads shows, customers are passionate about certain brands, such as MTV, Yahoo! and ESPN, and are eager to download a complete mobile experience developed by that brand. Today Sprint and Google have made a huge move for the future of Google Voice: direct carrier integration. The two companies have struck up a deal where in current Sprint users can now assign their existing mobile number as their Google Voice number, having it work exactly how you’d expect. You can se the number to ring other phones, filter calls, and dish out caller-specific voice mails. Speaking of voice mails, Google Voice will replace Sprint’s existing voice message system.

If a user holds an existing Google Voice number, they can easily replace their current Sprint number with the GV digits. Either way, with Google Voice, Sprint is content in opening up low-cost international calls and all the other bells and whistles you expect. See the video below for a cutesy overview.
