Just a few quick bites before the weekend turns over. We’ll wrap up an exciting week the included the introduction of two new Motorola handsets for Sprint with word from Virgin Mobile that they have made a decision to not include custom UIs on any of their Android phones. Yep, it was a request from the carrier that let to the beautiful stock experience that is the Motorola TRIUMPH More follows below.

Motorola XOOM Gets its First Custom ROM

The Motorola XOOM has received it’s first custom-baked ROM, the result of work undertaken by bigrushdog of XDA and the Tiamat Team. The ROM goes by the fairly uninspired XOOM Rom 1.0 Deodexed name, but the custom software is far from basic.  – all sorts of advanced options come neatly packaged inside. The bad news is though the ROM is based off of a stock build of XOOM software taken from the Verizon 3G version of the tablet, installing it will break 3G service if you are a current VZW subscriber. A pretty epic win for the XOOM community, nonetheless. Find full instructions at the source link below.

The HTC EVO View 4G just tripped through the FCC< and not a moment too soon. The tablet, based on the HTC Flyer, will hit shelves in just about two weeks with a 4G WiMAX radio on board. There isn’t too much more to learn about the tablet going by model number PG41200, but anything we don’t know yet will be revealed soon enough. Anyone out there awaiting the EVO View anxiously?

LG G-Slate Drops to $399 at T-Mobile

Since it’s launch, the T-Mobile G-Slate by LG has fallen out of the limelight as other Honeycomb devices have taken center stage, but the carrier is hoping to put some pep in the 8.9-inch tablets step by offering up a price drop. The G-Slate (known as the Optimus Pad elsewhere) is priced at a reasonable $399.99 on a two-year contract. You will need to wait out a $200 mail-in rebate to secure that pricing, but it is still a deal to consider if you don’t mind being locked into a carrier contract and monthly service fees. You might be better in the long run picking up an off-contract tablet at a slightly higher price (hint: Galaxy Tab 10.1), but if cellular service is a must this is a pretty stellar price for such a capable tablet.

Dual-Screen LG Genesis Now Available from US Cellular for $149.99

US Cellular’s latest release has me feeling all nostalgic for my old LG Voyager. The LG Genesis has launched at the regional carrier for the price of $149.99 on a two-year contract. That price considers a $100 mail-in rebate.

The LG Genesis is the dual-screen clamshell with full QWERTY keyboard first rumored for Verizon as the LG enV Touch Pro. It never surfaced and many thought plans for the device had been scrapped. Now Genesis with its 1GHz Snapdragon processor becomes a welcomed addition to US Cellular’s Android lineup. If you are at all interested in the device, check out this interactive demo to see what it’s all about.

Android 2.3.4 Leaks for the Samsung Galaxy S

With the Galaxy S update to Gingerbread fresh in our minds, the manufacturer is wasting no time in bringing their original superphone up to the latest version of Android, 2.3.4. A leak of the new Gingerbread build dating from June 3rd has been uncovered for the Galaxy S I9000, though the actual update could still be a ways off.

Samsung’s start with Android was a bit rocky to say the least, but recent moves have seen them slowly rising to the top of the pile. Quicker Android updates, better developer relations, and some killer new hardware all play a factor. If Samsung is able to deliver Android 2.3.4 to the original Galaxy flagship, it will earn them major brownie points

Despite Best of Intentions, Motorola Photon 4G Bootloader Will Be Locked

Yes, Motorola has promised that future handsets releases will feature unlockable bootloaders out of the box, but our hopes that the newly announced Photon 4G will be counted among them have been crushed. Moto has issued a statement that reaffirms their intentions to deploy software more open to development on Android smartphones later this year (carrier willing), but it’s a no-go for the Photon.

This comes as the latest in a string of attempts to create better relations between the underground Android development scene and mainstream manufacturing partners. Most of the major handset makers have committed to making things a bit easier by providing easily unlocked bootloaders and other features, but few have actually delivered. Samsung’s recent gesture of sending a Galaxy S II to one of CyangonMod’s developers is one of the few instances where a manufacturer has gone above and beyond to make good with custom software devs.

Perhaps there is still hope that an unlockable bootloader could come as part of a future software update, but let’s not get carried away.

We just got an email from Huawei informing us that their MediaPad launch event is going down on June 20th at CommunicAsia in Singapore. We still don’t know a whole lot about this thing, but they have given us a sneak peak at the device above. Unfortunately, they don’t show anything on the software side of things so it looks like we’ll have to wait a week and a half before we know exactly what this device is all about.

  • Fixes random reboots

  • And more

Those bolded ones sound pretty sweet, but all of these fixes and enhancements are more than welcome. If you’re eager to flash this, be sure to follow the following instructions, rooted or otherwise. [Android Police, Droid Life]

*Note 1 - Rooted users, DO NOT try to flash the RUU or you will brick your phone.

*Note 2 - Non-rooted users, the RUU will wipe everything from your phone.

*Note 3 - Rooted users, you will need the new radio.  [Instructions]

Download (non-rooted users):  Full MR2 RUU

ROM Download (rooted users):  Flyweight (deodexed and debloated) | PlainJane v3 (stock rooted)

Instructions (non-rooted users):

  2. Place PG05IMG.zip on the root directory of your SD card (not in a folder).
  3. Turn off your Thunderbolt.
  4. Holding Volume Down and then Power simultaneously until the phone boots into the bootloader.
  5. The file should begin flashing the update immediately.
  6. Wait, up to several minutes, for your device to reboot.

  1. Flash the new radio we’ve listed in "Note 3."
  2. Download one of the ROMs from above and place it on your SD card.
  3. Boot into recovery from ROM Manager.
  4. Create a backup.
  5. When that has finished, "install zip from sd card" and choose the ROM you downloaded.
  6. Install it and enjoy a stable device.

ASUS: Transformer Shipments Will Beat Competitors’ This Month

The folks at ASUS promised they’d be ramping production up this month forward, but they are now so confident that they can meet demand that they’re professing they’ll beat all of their competitors in tablets shipped… except Apple. It’s no surprise, really. The Motorola XOOM is overpriced and they can’t seem to sell as many shipments as they need to, Samsung has just gotten the ball rolling with their 10.1 (though they do still have 7 inch devices out there), and everyone else just doesn’t have the mindshare or compelling devices. We just look forward to seeing this thing available in more places. Makes us proud, ASUS. [BGR]

In related news, they are looking to launch the Slider in the UK in August, though other regions were promised June. We’re not sure what’s up there, but that’s a long time to wait when competitors will surely be bringing leaner and meaner devices to market shortly after that. [Unwired View]

Apple vs Samsung Heating Up With New Tongue-in-Cheek Galaxy Tab 10.1 Ad

Posted: 10 Jun 2011 08:52 AM PDT

We were wondering how Samsung would respond to recent lawsuits by Apple who claim Samsung infringes on their products’ likenesses. While most of you probably want Samsung to pull the rug from beneath Apple by refusing to sell them components for the iPad, iPhone, iPod and other products, that wouldn’t be the smartest move as they make a lot of money from that stuff.

Samsung has chosen to go a different route, though – ridiculing Apple in their advertisements. The first is a new Galaxy Tab 10.1 ad that shows people using the Tab in their every day lives while their friends with iPads and other stuff struggle. Need to follow along a flash-enabled presentation in a meeting and have an iPad? Well, you know how that goes.

I called it tongue-in-cheek in the title of this article, but that part of the ad is more “in your face” than that. It’s a refreshing move from Samsung and I love to see that they won’t back down to big, bad Apple both in courts and in media and advertising. Watch the amusing ad above.

NOOKcolor’s At Overstock for $200 Right Now

While the new Nook Touch is one fantastic eInk eReader with great battery life, the NOOKcolor is still a great tablet for the price. If you’ve been holding out on buying one, you might want to jump on it now as Overstock.com has it for $200, $50 less than MSRP. It’s not going to run Honeycomb or blow your socks off with its performance, but it’s solid and quite capable for the cost. Head over there now if you want to buy one. [via Reddit]

What Games Are You Playing?

Posted: 10 Jun 2011 07:02 AM PDT

This image has no alt text

Welp, it’s Friday. A slow one, at that. And you know what happens when it gets slow – we get a little curious. Today, in the spirit of E3 wrapping up, I’m wondering what games you folks are playing. A lot of great titles have come out this past year and more are expected to stampede our way.

But what are you playing right now? Anything recent or have you been revisiting old classics? And let us know what your favorite game genre is, while you’re at it.

I’ve personally been playing a lot of Plants vs Zombies, a game I once shot down without having tried it but fell in love with once I did. It’s flat-out awesome, no matter how whacky it is. I’ve also been enjoying obliterating my friends in Words With Friends, more so now that they’ve fixed a lot of the issues that plagued it.

As for genre, I’m burnt out on the tower defense scene. I love those games, but you can only plant so many guns and defend so many towers! (Plants vs Zombies is different, though. I can’t explain it.)

I want to get into some of the great RPGs that have turned up over the past year, but I just haven’t had a lot of time to sit down and play them. The Zenonia series is definitely on my list of RPG games to check out once I do manage to find that time.

So let’s hear it – how are you wasting your day?

E3 2011: We Take a Quick Look at the OnLive Hardware for the HTC Flyer [Video]

Posted: 10 Jun 2011 06:15 AM PDT

OnLive is one of the coolest things coming to Android. They’ve teamed up with HTC to bring the video games on-demand service to the Flyer and future tablets and, to be honest, it has us intrigued. Very intrigued. Unfortunately, they showed up to E3 without a functional demo, but Chris takes a quick look at the nice-looking controller and the wireless interface that you’ll use to game on the tablet.

They did have a demo of their current standalone units on the big screen and the iPad, and we expect the Android experience to be very similar. With OnLive, you can stream games that your tablet isn’t even technologically capable of playing. If your bandwidth is good enough, you could play a game like Gears of War on the HTC Flyer irregardless of the fact that it has an aging Adreno 205 GPU. Take a look at the videos above (OnLive hardware display) and below for an idea of what’s headed our way.
