HTC sales figures for May more than double last years

Posted: 07 Jun 2011 11:26 AM PDT

Sales figures for the highly popular HTC have came out again and I feel like just saying what we have the last three times — They have gone up, and have gone up fast. HTC has continued to not only beat previous sales records but it looks like they are more than doubling up each year as well. I think they might owe a small piece of that success completely to Android, and when I say small I mean most of it.

Sales numbers surrounding April and May of this year as well as comparisons to last year show that HTC has more than doubled its sales numbers. HTC just reported that May sales reached $1.42 Billion in consolidated sales beating Aprils number of $1.35 Billion and blowing way past May of 2010′s consolidated numbers of $657 million. Things are looking pretty good from the HTC side of the road.

With huge devices selling last month including the Thunderbolt, Incredible S, Desire S, Inspire 4G and even the Windows HD7 we can say with confidence that these numbers are only going to get bigger when the HTC Sensation 4G and the EVO 3D start selling like hot cakes, not to mention the Flyer and View 4G tablet.

LG leaked phone teaser could be the Nexus 3

Posted: 07 Jun 2011 11:06 AM PDT

Uh oh here we go again. A new photo has been released or leaked showing what seems to be a very sleek and shiny new phone from LG. It looks pretty darn similar to the leak of the HTC Nexus 3 that we posted about last week then later revealed to be a fake. According to the source this came from someone at LG so it could be a highly reliable photo.

So now the question remains as to who will be lucky enough to get the next Google-powered Nexus device. Will it be HTC or LG, or maybe someone else we haven’t heard about. The photo above makes us believe it will be LG with that sleek looking phone that features no hardware or capacitive buttons that we can see. HTC manufactured the Nexus One we all loved, then Samsung was the team behind the Nexus S. It only sounds fair to let someone else like LG get a chance.

This is all we have to go on, just a leaked picture from someone at LG. Maybe they are trying to get some hype or maybe this is the real deal. What do you the readers think? I do like how the bezel seems to flare out on the bottom in the leaked photo. If LG does indeed get the nod from Google to make the Nexus 3 or whatever it will be named I sure hope they deliver a quality device because the LG G2x has more than a few issues.

Is this the next Nexus? What do you think?

T-Mobile MyTouch 4G Slide revealed in accessory photos

Posted: 07 Jun 2011 10:46 AM PDT

We have been hearing about the HTC DoubleShot for a while now. That is the code name for none other than the T-Mobile myTouch 4G Slide that is coming soon. Just last week some blurry photos of the device were leaked to the press, and now today we have some accessory cases showing how the final design will most likely look.

T-Mobile has yet to announce this device but we have a feeling it will be sometime soon especially with all the leaks and information coming out lately. Even a ROM for the Doubleshot was leaked a while back so it must be coming eventually right. It looks to now feature dual LED flash and they’ve moved the speaker down below.

We have covered this phone a few times but if you have missed any of that click all those links I’ve posted above. It will look extremely similar to the original myTouch 4G but feature a slide out QWERTY keyboard and that new dual-core Snapdragon processor like the Sensation 4G is touting around. Hopefully we get some official word or press shots soon so we can put an official face to the name of this phone. Stay tuned!

Motorola Xoom 4G LTE Update Coming Soon?

Posted: 07 Jun 2011 10:18 AM PDT

We haven’t heard much out of Verizon or Motorola regarding this lately but from what we are reading it looks like the update might be starting soon, if not already underway for select Xoom owners. In case you forgot, when the Xoom originally shipped we were promised a 4G LTE hardware upgrade but I dont recall much information from either company following the launch but now it looks like an email either went out early, or the upgrade has started.

According to our friends over at Phandroid it seems that one of their readers received an email from Motorola regarding the 4G LTE upgrade and the email even mentions they sent shipping materials for him to send his Xoom in for the upgrade. We aren’t sure if this is a mistake or not but I’m sure more details will emerge shortly. Here is the email below.

Thank you for submitting your Motorola Xoom for the 4G LTE upgrade. You should have recently received a package in the mail with instructions and materials for returning your device for the upgrade.

Our records indicate that we have not yet received your Motorola Xoom. If you are still interested in upgrading your Motorola Xoom, this is a friendly reminder to please follow the instructions provided in your upgrade package and ship your device back for the upgrade.

If you have already shipped your device back to us, please contact us at 1-800-734-5870 and one of our support specialists will assist you with tracking and completing your order.

It seems the tipster that got this email has not received any of the materials to ship his Xoom in for the upgrade so that is part of the confusion here, maybe this email was sent out premature. I’m tempted to call the number in the email and see what I get but it is probably just a standard customer support line. We will be looking into this in the coming days and will be sure to update you with any news.

Samsung Indulge heads to Cricket and packs a punch

Posted: 07 Jun 2011 09:28 AM PDT

Cricket Wireless just got what we would call a nice mid-range Android phone named the Samsung Indulge. It looks like a mini Samsung Epic in a way and features some similar hardware inside making it a great phone for those on Cricket. It comes with Android 2.2 on board with a 1 Ghz processor, 3.5″ display, Touch Wiz 3.0 and the weakest link would be the 3 MP camera on the rear but that is plenty for those Facebook photos right? All this for the low price of $329. Not bad when you don’t have to sign a contract of any sort.

The Samsung Indulge is already out in the wild running with Metro PCS so the hardware isn’t extremely new to us, but this refreshing improvement to Cricket’s lineup is a welcomed one for those that are using something like the Huawei Ascend or even the Kyocera Zio as the build quality and Android 2.2 of the Indulge is a step up that is for sure.

For more information and pictures feel free to head over to the Cricket Samsung Indulge page and possibly even order yourself one. Get the freedom of no contract and a great phone with Cricket. Full press release below:

Motorola XT882 headed to China as Dual-Core, Dual-Sim, Dual-Mode Superphone

Posted: 07 Jun 2011 08:56 AM PDT

Lately we have seen a few devices that were headed to China and they weren’t what I’d call up to par in the specs department, but this looks to bring that to a new level. Folks in China should be ready to rejoice with this new phone from Motorola. It is strikingly similar to the Motorola Atrix in terms of design and a few specs but the real treat is that dual-sim and dual-mode under the hood.

This Android 2.3 sporting XT882 has the 1 Ghz dual-core Tegra 2 CPU we all love, as well as that 4″ qHD High-Res display like the Atrix, with 8GB internal storage and an 8 MP shooter on the rear and a front facing camera for all your video calling needs. This phone is a powerhouse regarding its hardware and same goes for its capabilities with being a world phone.

The real treat for those in China is this phone also features GSM/CDMA both as well as dual-sim slots under the battery cover so you can have one of each and be covered wherever you are headed. Those capabilities along with that dual-core, dual-camera and dual everything power you are surely covered for just about any situation. Sadly this is only in China but we have a feeling Motorola might have something in the works for other regions. For more pictures of the device click here.

FCC complaint filed by consumer group over Verizon blocking tethering apps

Posted: 07 Jun 2011 08:30 AM PDT

A consumer group called Free Press has filed a complaint with the FCC against Verizon Wireless for its practices on tethering concerning apps that allow third party tethering. The group alleges that Google blocked tethering apps in the Android Market at Verizon’s request. Verizon is denying any wrongdoing.

Free Press claims that when Verizon requested the Google block tethering apps in the Android Market that Verizon violated conditions of the FCC license when it purchased 700MHz spectrum for 4G service. Specifically the consumer group claims that Verizon violated terms that said it could not “deny, limit, or restrict” the ability of the customer to use apps or devices of their choosing on the network.

“Users pay through the nose for Verizon’s LTE service, and having done so, they should be able to use their connections as they see fit,” Free Press policy counsel Aparna Sridhar said in a statement. “Instead, Verizon’s approach is to sell you broadband but then put up roadblocks to control your use of it.” Google had previously stated that tethering app Wireless Tether was removed at the request of wireless carriers.

Popular Games on Android devices have fee deduction malware says NetQin

Posted: 07 Jun 2011 08:22 AM PDT

A security firm called NetQin has identified a new malware threat against Android users. The threat has a fee deduction app inside some games to steal money from the players. The malware is disguised as the games Mole Attack, Jawbreaker, and Five Chess among others. The apps will subscribe the players to paid services without permission resulting in fraudulent charges. NetQin says that so far the malware has only infected Chinese users.

The malware is called MSO.anim and is distributed mostly though application download networks. All three of the games that are infected have almost identical characteristics. Once the games are installed it determines the network used and if the device is web connected. If web connected, the malware establishes a data connection and then accesses a website to start the fee deduction.

NetQin says that to protect their devices the user needs protection, naturally the recommended protection app is the one offered by NetQin. The company also suggests that users only download from trusted sites and check bills frequently to stop any rogue charges.

Sony S1 tablets hit FCC

Posted: 07 Jun 2011 08:14 AM PDT

Sony’s S1 Honeycomb tablet has crossed the FCC, following its clamshell cousin the Sony S2. Four versions of the S1 are listed, the  SGPT111US/S, SGPT112US/S, SGPT111CA/S and SGPT112CA/S, with Sony suggesting that the only differences are for “marketing purposes.”

We’re guessing that’s two models for the US and two for Canada, perhaps with different amounts of memory inside. All four get WiFi b/g/n and Bluetooth 2.1+EDR but, unlike with the S2, there’s no 3G/4G connectivity. We spoke too soon: the S1 has a separately listed 3G module, the same HSPA+ capable Ericsson chipset as the S2.

Sony has previously said that the S1 and S2 will go on sale sometime this fall, perhaps with a change of name before that happens. The tablets run Android, but other hardware has been left undetermined; however, Sony has confirmed that the S1 will function as a universal remote control, using a built-in IR emitter to tame your A/V setup.

Tenable Network Security offers Nessus Android app

Posted: 07 Jun 2011 08:05 AM PDT

The number of threats that are looking to compromise networks and security in the business world are always growing. New attacks on networks are launched all the time and network administrators need to be able to access reports on their network from anywhere when they need them. A company called Tenable Network Security has announced a new app for Android users that allows the Android device to access the Nessus server and read reports on the network.

The user can also use the Android app to launch new scans of the network remotely. This is the first Android app from the company and it is available at no cost to the user. The company says that mobile access to the server for their network security allows for faster response times. With the app rather than having to go to a computer to read reports or start scans the reports and scans can be done from anywhere the phone has a signal.

"Network security isn't a 9-5 job," said Ron Gula, CEO of Tenable Network Security. "The ability to conduct vulnerability scans and review results anytime from anywhere is exactly what enterprise IT and security professionals expect from their software and service providers, and it's what they need to keep their networks safe, 24/7."

AT&T HTC Sensation spotted crossing FCC

Posted: 07 Jun 2011 07:06 AM PDT

The HTC Sensation has made a second trip through the FCC, this time bearing 3G and 4G band compatibility with AT&T’s network in the US. Filings for the smartphone were spotted in early May for the T-Mobile USA variant – which we reviewed last week – and now it looks like AT&T may be getting a model of its own.

This particular model has support for GSM 850/1900 and WCMDA bands V and II, making it potentially compatible with AT&T’s HSPA+ network (though not its new LTE network, of course). Otherwise we’re assuming it’s the same Sensation that we’ve seen before, so WiFi b/g/n, Bluetooth 3.0, a 4.3-inch qHD display, dual-core 1.2GHz Snapdragon processor and unibody metal chassis.

There’s no telling whether AT&T will indeed launch the Sensation – or, if it does, whether it will be called that or something else – but given the phone is HTC’s flagship we wouldn’t be surprised if they did. T-Mobile USA sales of the Sensation 4G will begin June 12.

Posted: 06 Jun 2011 09:58 PM PDT

Back in the day, and by back in the day I mean a couple of months ago, your main homie Chris Burns, aka your humble narrator, got to take a look at the Looxcie Bluetooth Headset, taking the time then to do a full review of this device for the greater good of all odd devices that work with Android. In this case, it’s a camera that attaches to your head by the ear and works via apps working from your Android handset. That was then, this is now! Droid Bionic picture leak again today with 4.5 qHD Display, Android 2.3.4

Posted: 06 Jun 2011 04:45 PM PDT

We have not heard much regarding the Motorola Droid Bionic over the past little while other than it might have been canceled, or revamped or possible even renamed the Targa. Earlier today some photo’s were leaked that finally revealed what the delays were all for. Motorola is bringing us a 4.5″ qHD sporting Droid Bionic. You can see that leak here.

Just a few hours later and we now have more photo’s that show the front of this device rather than the rear along with a possible about me screen showing Android 2.3.4 is on board, as well as an updated Blur UI with some 3D features included. Check out the photo’s below and tell us what you think.

Either way these are pretty interesting to say the least. It looks like they dropped the original Bionic to beef up the screen to a much larger size and hopefully they kept the dual-core and 4G all at the same time. The leaks from earlier today show 4G is still on the back of the phone so that looks good. I’m sure more details will emerge over the coming days.

aPORKalypse, Pigs of Doom for Android Review [Standard and Xperia PLAY Optimized]

Posted: 06 Jun 2011 04:24 PM PDT

Today a masterpiece of pork has been released, having been previously only available for Android if you had an Xperia PLAY, now out there for everyone to take pork in – I mean part in if you love to pork puzzle games – I mean play puzzle games. This game is today’s Amazon Appstore Free App of the Day and it’s a game of attempting to once again save the earth, like most video games, only this time you’re a pig and you’re fighting against the pigs of heck. Sound like your kind of swine? Do indulge, do indulge instantly.

This is a game not unlike the utterly classic Solomon’s Club, another puzzle game of some note, that one for Game Boy classic, this one for your brand new Android device. What you’re doing in the game is moving your pig character up down left and right across a 2D/3D grid. The object of the game is to move objects into play or out of play in a series of turns all aimed at you accessing the key square which unlocks the next level. Much in the same way the most successful game for this mobile platform Angry Birds makes you desire more and more they next unlocked level, so too does this game make you desire the next porky puzzle.

What you see in this game from the splash screen to the last level is a rather professionally produced game, made in ernest for mobile, the graphics created for the medium to small screens you’ll be using it on. The graphics are simple but well-adjusted for the wide variety of displays, resolutions, and other hardware they’re certainly going to be showing up on. You don’t need 3D 60FPS graphics loads to make a great game, games like aPORKalypse are proving that day after day here on Android.

Have a hankering for some mind-boggling maze-like puzzles in an off-the-wall environment inside an impossibly odd storyline with lovable piglike characters?

You’ve found your perfect match!

Available in the Amazon Appstore or through your Xperia PLAY app and your V-Cast store on your Xperia PLAY device now!

Atrix Devs Get Major Victory with 2nd-init Beta

Posted: 06 Jun 2011 02:33 PM PDT

The Motorola Atrix, the first dual-core phone to hit America, had a bootloader as locked down as they come. Developers have been hard at work for months now trying to find some way to get unleash the full power of the dual-core beast. It looks like we’re on the edge of their first real victory. XDA member edgan has finished a beta port of the 2nd-init program which has been used on other devices to bypass the bootloader to allow custom ROMs. The program is being worked on now, and could result in some custom ROMs in the near future.

2nd-init was ported from the Motorola Defy, where it was used to run Cyanogenmod 7, surmounting a locked bootloader. This means we could even see CM running on the Atrix, if it can find developer support. While 2nd-init is a step towards freedom, and will be a major win for devs, it doesn’t grant users complete control over their device. For instance, flashing new kernels is still impossible, meaning we won’t be seeing the Atrix’s Tegra 2 overclocked to the ridiculous speeds we’re seeing the Xoom and Transformer get.

The program has been successfully installed on several devices, but is still being tested. Once the bugs are worked out it will come down to whether there are developers working on creating custom ROMs. With the Atrix now on sale, hopefully some perspective devs will be able to pick it up. We’ll bring you updates as they come in, as we all look forward to the Atrix’s first real taste of freedom.

Gameloft Bringing Their First Unreal Engine Game to Android

Posted: 06 Jun 2011 02:02 PM PDT

Gameloft, creator of exceedingly fancy mobile games, has announced that their first game developed using the Unreal Engine, “March of Heroes,” will be making it’s way to Android. Gameloft has been really churning out the Android games lately, such as the recently announced 9mm. They have even been announced to have an exclusive store bundled with the Evo 3D. Now they’re bringing a new FPS using the power of Unreal’s gaming engine.

The Unreal Engine, which has brought the world games such as BioShock, Mass Effect, and on our own Android devices, Dungeon Defenders, is known for producing visually stunning games on platforms ranging from home consoles to smartphones. This portability is obviously going to benefit Android users, as this engine enables developers like Gameloft to more easily develop cross platform games. Check out the trailer below for a taste of what Gameloft and Unreal have cooked up.

Motorola XPRT Brings Droid Pro Hardware to the World for Non-Verizon Lovers

Posted: 06 Jun 2011 01:22 PM PDT

Starting today Motorola’s XPRT (better known as the Droid Pro on Verizon) is available for those not wanting to head out with big red. The XPRT is aimed at professional users, with it’s portrait qwerty keyboard, reminiscent of another popular smartphone. The XPRT is only the second Motorola Android phone to make it to the carriers in yellow, after the Motorola i1, which featured push-to-talk. If you are looking for a business-centric Android phone and you’ve got a taste for BlackBerry-looking hardware, you can pick up the XPRT for $399.99 or $129.99 with a new 2-year contract.

It’s interesting to see a phone like the Droid Pro, which is now over half a year old, get sent over to another carrier in the states. This is especially odd considering how rare it is for Android phones to be shared by any of the four major carriers in the U.S. at all. The Droid Pro, and now XPRT is a pretty unique device from a hardware perspective, and could be a welcome arrival for those Android users seeking a portrait keyboard and don’t want to hook up with Verizon for one reason or another.

The XPRT, like the Droid Pro, features a 1 GHz single core OMAP processor, 2 GB internal memory, a hardware keyboard, and a 3.1″ 320×480 HVGA touchscreen. The phone makes use of the US CDMA network (no 4G WiMax, sorry) and has a SIM slot for international travel. The phone also includes many of the standard features associated with any Android 2.2 device, including a 5MP rear camera, eCompass, and microSD slot, which in this case comes pre-loaded with a 2 GB card.

Samsung Sent Galaxy S II’s to Cyanogenmod Dev

Posted: 06 Jun 2011 12:35 PM PDT

Well this is both shocking and awesome. It appears Samsung has sent at a complimentary Galaxy S II to at least one of the developers over on the Cyanogenmod team. Atinm, one of the developers working on porting CM7 to the original Galaxy S tweeted today this welcome news. This is a bold move on Samsung’s part and just earned them a ton of brownie points in my book.

Cyanogenmod started on the original Android phone, HTC’s G1. Since then it has expanded to many other devices, but the list of supported devices remains fairly HTC heavy. While Cyanogenmod’s future on HTC phones may have been a bit shaky until the recent decision to stop locking bootloaders, it appears Samsung is also aware of how influential the power users that love CM are. It may be a bit until we see CM7 running on a GSII, since the original Galaxy S is still a work in progress, but just the fact that it’s coming is exciting

I have to applaud Samsung’s stance towards Android hacking and development lately, especially as other OEMs danced with locked bootloaders and heavily skinned UI’s. Samsung appears to be paying much more attention to not crossing the developers and power users, who tend to be some of the most enthusiastic about Android. In my opinion this is going to pay off as customers, such as myself, who want that freedom Samsung is giving us, are often the ones less tech-savy friends and family go to for purchasing advice. Other hardware manufacturers take note! Let’s hope Samsung keeps this sort of attention to developers up.
