Motorola PHOTON 4G Hands-On [Video]

Posted: 09 Jun 2011 10:37 AM PDT

If you happened to miss our last few posts you would have noticed we’ve been hanging out at the Motorola Event today in NYC. They announced some exciting new devices coming soon. A few of those are the Photon 4G, the Titanium, Triumph, and the XPRT. It was a busy day here in NYC but right now I’m here to show you the Photon 4G and its awesome kickstand. The Motorola Photon 4G has a unique diamond-like shape but under the hood it has all the features you’d want and love in an android phone.

This phone is basically a beefed up version of the Motorola Atrix, yet it comes with a nifty kickstand and all the same Motorola docks, keyboards and accessories not to mention is running Android 2.3 stock. If you missed the specs in my announcement post above I’ll mention them again. It features Android 2.3, a 4.3″ qHD high-res display, 1 Ghz dual-core Tegra 2 CPU, 4G Wimax on board, it has an 8MP camera with a front facing voice chat camera. A dual-core 4G phone that also has a kickstand — Yes Please!

I’d like to note that the Photon 4G also has international GSM capabilities making this a world phone. The kickstand is very similar in shape and size to that of the EVO 4G and functions the same. When you kick it out the Motorola desktop dock software initializes and goes into dock mode automatically for your convenience. We have tons of hands-on images below and will be sure to post the hands-on video as soon as possible.

Motorola TRIUMPH Announced

Posted: 09 Jun 2011 09:46 AM PDT

What lies beneath is the first really fantastic Android device offered by Motorola for Virgin Mobile. In fact it’s the first Motorola device EVER offered on the carrier, so your ears should be perking up if you’re a fan of the big white-teeth grin, if you know what I mean. Virgin Mobile is known for its flexibility, and the TRIUMPH is no exception, coming in on a no contract plan. The specs on this device certainly don’t win it any big favors for those looking for the race-winners, but there certainly are some surprises waiting for you inside.

The Motorola TRIUMPH is a 4.1-inch 800 x 400 pixel resolution WVGA touchscreen display having smartphone with a VGA camera on the front and a 5-megapixel camera on the back. It’s got the ability to capture HD video at 720p and has HDMI-out playback of 720p as well. The biggest first (besides the fact that this is the first Motorola / Virgin collaboration) is that this device has the Virgin Mobile Live 2.0 app which will allow you access to the Virgin Mobile branded music stream. What this app consists of is a social networking music application that’ll give you access to a music stream hosted by a fellow named DJ Abbey Braden, live music performance videos, and special “check in” features at special events. Basically this is a phone for people who love Virgin Mobile a LOT.

Additionally this phone has a basic 1GHz processor, runs Android 2.2 Froyo, and has Flash support, plus “Android Webkit Browser” as they’re calling it. The device is made with a soft touch design so it’ll be a comfort to be handling, it weighs in at 143g (5.04 ounces), and its dimensions are 4.8" x 2.5" x 0.4", making it pretty dern thin. Certainly a good competitor for the rest of the Androids on Verizon, the last one we looked at being the LG Optimus V, certainly a powerful little bugger in its own right.

Stick with us here on Android Community as we continue to cover this device and get all the hands-on and review action you can possible handle throughout the next few weeks!

Motorola TITANIUM Announced

Posted: 09 Jun 2011 09:36 AM PDT

What follows is a mightily little device that makes up what it lacks in processor speed and Android up-to-datedness with a rather strong punch in the hardware. What this phone represents is the successor to the Motorola i1, this little monster coming out as an iDEN device, surprisingly stocked with the now-several-gen-old Android 2.1 Eclair, and a full QUERTY keyboard below a 3.1-inch touchscreen display. But why is this phone called the TITANIUM? Why it’s because it meets Military Specification 810G for dust, shock, vibration, low pressure, solar radiation, high temperature and low temperature of course!

So what you see here is one, again, surprisingly hardcore little scrapper. It’s got a 5-megapixel camera on the back, Bluetooth 2.1 + EDR1, and Quickoffice out of the box. It’s got a 32GB capable microSD card slot stocked with a 2GB card installed, Wi-fi 802.11 b/g, and integrated GPS. This device weighs in at 5.2 ounces (147.2 grams), sizes in at 2.44 inch x 4.71 inch x 0.53 inch (62.2mm x 119.7mm x 13.5mm), and has a battery MUCH bigger than it needs at 1820 mAh.

Should you toss this device from your pocket unto the ground on a daily basis? Probably not. Could you? Perhaps! Will the battery last you from here until next week? With such a small display and basically nothing eating it up, it’s very possible! Will this be an Android fan’s next phone of choice? Probably not. This device is made for those people working on construction sites wanting a phone that can access the internet, plain and simple.

Will we still get our hands on it for you, the Android lovers? Of course we will! Stick with us for that and the rest of the Motorola devices we’ve seen today in New York!

Motorola XPRT Announced, Gigantic Battery in Tow

Posted: 09 Jun 2011 09:34 AM PDT

You may remember from a few months ago a phone by the name of DROID Pro. This was an Android phone that essentially everyone familiar with the situation called the BlackBerry killer. In fact our pal Vince over on SlashGear did a major review of the device as it was back then compared directly to the BlackBerry Torch. Such distinct insides with such similar chassis. Now there’s a new telephone on the way by the name of Motorola XPRT. You’ll notice that it looks QUITE similar to the DROID Pro, which was also a Motorola device, but eyes will deceive: this is indeed a new device.

The two main differences between this device and the DROID Pro are in the hardware: if you hold both devices together you’ll notice slight improvements in button placement and changes in the roundness of the overall casing. The second difference is in the battery: where the Pro held only a 1420 mAh battery for an OK amount of time without charging, the XPRT has a significantly larger 1860mAh battery for what’s certainly going to be a massive improvement in awake time.

Beyond that it’s just a really quite friendly and generously powerful device for messaging and professional productivity: 1GHz OMAP processor, world phone capability (I used the Pro whilst at Mobile World Congress 2011 in Barcelona – worked slick!), Android 2.2 Froyo, 5-megapixel camera on the back with dual-LED flash, Bluetooth 2.1 + EDR, and Wifi 802.11 b/g. Again the device has worldwide connectedness with CDMA (EVDO Rev. A), GSM/UMTS (HSPA), it’s got 3G hotspot capability, Quickoffice including Quickword, Quicksheet, Quickpoint, and QuickPDF files out of the box in addition to Device encryption, multi-headed VPN, and EAS security policy support out of the box.

This device of course has access to the Android Market, it’s got Adobe Flash 10, GPS, a high-res 3.1″ HVGA TFT LCD display at 320×480 pixels resolution, and a full QUERTY keyboard, and it weighs in at 5.1 ounces (145 grams.) This device comes with 2GB ROM, 512MB RAM, and a microSD card slot with a 2GB card installed and the capability of working with a 32GB card. And it’s running the newest version of MOTOBLUR over Android. Release dat for this phone is June 5, pricing: $129.99 w/ 2yr agreement.

Look like the phone for you? Are you in to the pro-factor here or are you more of a slide-out keyboard sort of Android lover?

Motorola PHOTON 4G Announced

Posted: 09 Jun 2011 09:34 AM PDT

This is the powerhouse that eclipses Motorola’s last big gun, that being the ATRIX 4G. With a name like PHOTON it certainly better be doing some eclipsing, and it will with a selection of Motorola factory-made accessories, a rather unique diamond-shaped form factor, dual cameras, Android 2.3 Gingerbread, and a 1GHz Tegra 2 dual-core processor from NVIDIA. Does that mean I’ll be able to play all my favorite Tegra Zone apps? Why yes, that is what that means. While this phone isn’t quite the first to the market with any one of these specs alone, together this is a whallop of a dual-core “4G” device to be sure.

You know what the most important feature is here, and one that makes yours truly stand up and yell YES!? It has a kickstand. That DOES make it the world’s first dual-core kickstand-having Android phone, and for that it can be proud. The PHOTON also has international GSM capabilities, a VGA camera on the front and an 8-megapixel camera on the back with the capability of capturing 720p video, and it’s got the ability to play 1080p video over HDMI, Motorola Media Link, “Mirror Mode” which is essentially HDMI mirroring again, and you’ll be doing just fine looking at the display itself at 4.3" qHD.

And why would we compare this phone to the ATRIX unless it’s got docking modes galore? Why, because it DOES have docking modes galore – plug it right into that special Motorola Multimedia Dock dock you love so well and work in mobile desktop mode. Plop the device in your standalone dock for some amazing HDMI out or stereo system action. Do whatever you like!

This device has the ability to have up to 48GB of storage on it. That’s more than you’ll ever use, right? The 48 comes from 16GB of onboard storage and a microSD slot that can accept up to a 32GB card, as is standard with these rock and roll phones from the future we’ve been seeing over the past few months. Don’t have 32GB microSD card holding ability? Get atta here!

This device connects over 3G and 4G speeds with the ability to have up to 8 devices connect to the internet via mobile hotspot. As this is a GSM ready device, you’ll also want to know that you can only connect one single device whilst roaming on GSM, and that this ability will not be available out of the box, coming instead in a later update down the line.

The PHOTON has a generous 1700mAh battery for lots of uptime, Enterprise Security including remote device management and data encryption, and of course the goodies: HD Multimedia Dock and Car Dock, both of them available closer to launch. Launch date for this device is at the moment still not revealed, but Motorola’s hinted at Summer 2011.

Wallpaper Changer and SPB Time App Review Double-Down

Posted: 08 Jun 2011 04:44 PM PDT

Let’s talk about two reviews at once. While it’s generally the policy here at Android Community to review one app at a time, this set of apps is early. Both apps are in their first stages of release, and although they’ve both already been listed in the Android Market, you may notice a few bugs here and there. That said, both apps show great promise. The first is Wallpaper Changer, an app we found out about via the developer, j4velin, a frequenter of XDA developers and more than likely one of your good pals. The second is SPB Time, a diverse clock app which will be bringing you to the next level of time telling in 3D.

There’s one single video for both of these apps: why? Because you’ll want both of them, and in order to show you how well Wallpaper Changer works, we had to wait a minute because it’s got a timer that switches your wallpaper as infrequently as a minute apart from one another. Therefor in between switches, we decided to not just fiddle around, but to show you another app in the meantime!

Wallpaper Changer

This is an extremely simplistic app which allows you to use a single folder of images and flip between them based on several different kinds of criteria. The first of these is a time-based flipper. You can set intervals to essentially whatever you want, though you’ll probably want to stick within 60 minutes or so. Another way you can flip through wallpapers is with the tiny 1×1 tappable widget which selects a random wallpaper from your designated folder. Next is a lockscreen switch, flipping the wallpaper every time you wake up your phone.

Options include the ability to start and stop the changing, start on boot, and the ability to only flip wallpapers when you’re connected to a charger. You’re also able to add single wallpapers to a collection that is then held in-app. One thing you will have to watch out for is that your wallpapers are pre-cut or at least have the subject matter centered, as you do not get cropping selection as you would just adding a wallpaper from your built-in selector.

You can grab this app in the [Android Market]

SPB Time

This app is also on the market but does have quite a few bugs to still work out. That’s not to say that you shouldn’t go attempt to download it to try it out. That said, it does cost $4.99 on the market, so use your conscience or the Force to guide your hand. This is an app that’s basically the king of all clock apps. You can tell time, keep time, set an alarm, switch your clock face, see times around the world; basically every different kind of clock app in one place and with some swanky 3D transitions between screens. This app comes from the same people that bring you SPB Shell 3D, a home screen replacement app that we’ve also reviewed in full. See this clock app in action in the video below right alongside Wallpaper Changer:

Double Review Time!

Now I’ve got a question for you, the reader, since this was an experiment: with smaller, simpler apps like these, would you rather we continue to do a single post and a single video for each, or double up like this for double the flavor, double the fun?

Motorola Xoom, Galaxy Tab, iPad 2: Drop Test Comparison [Video]

Posted: 08 Jun 2011 03:56 PM PDT

It is always painfully fun to watch these types of video clips. You know it is exciting, but deep down you wish they would just give you the toys instead. That is the the thought that always runs through my head. What we have here is a drop test of a few of our favorite tablet devices. That odd looking iDevice goes first, then the Galaxy Tab 7″, and last the heaviest of them all the Motorola Xoom.

Courtesy of ElectronicsBreak we have this fun little video to show just how bad things go when you drop something like an iPad or a Motorola Xoom just one time. You may get lucky the first time but for most of us it only takes one drop for things to go bad, especially the iPad 2 as it struggled.

Ready… 1, 2, 3, crash!

That is basically how this went for all three devices. It does look like the Galaxy Tab 7″ took the least amount of damage but still managed to break, the iPad 2 by far looked to suffer the most damage and the screen was probably completely unable to be viewed, last was the Motorola Xoom. It looked pretty close to the iPad as far as damage goes but it also is the heaviest of the bunch. I think its safe to say you should probably use a case, or be extremely careful with any tablet device, especially one that is 10″

Samsung Galaxy S II will not be hitting Verizon in July, the Galaxy Tab 10.1 will

Posted: 08 Jun 2011 03:19 PM PDT

Earlier reports suggested that the Samsung Galaxy S II would be coming to Verizon starting sometime in July. Those reports were brought to us by Computerworld but it looks like now just a few hours later and after everyone and their dog ran the story, that it was actually incorrect. It looks like what they meant to say was the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 will be hitting Verizon in July, not the Galaxy S II superphone.

Recently we reported the Galaxy Tab 10.1 with 4G LTE would be up for pre-order on Verizon starting today June 8th but we have not heard anything regarding the pre-order. With this new information it appears pre-orders will in fact be starting soon and the device will be shipping in July, that is if this new piece of information is correct.

So for now it looks like the amazingly thin Galaxy S II we reviewed here wont be hitting the streets here in the U.S. come July, but sadly at a later date that has yet to be revealed. Hopefully with this mix up and confusion Samsung will come out with more details regarding the Galaxy S II in the U.S

E3: Hands-On with Shadowgun from Madfinger Games, Graphics look Incredible

Posted: 08 Jun 2011 02:46 PM PDT

Shadowgun by Madfinger games has been mentioned a few times here before. We even saw a demo of the game by Nvidia but it was merely just the character on screen walking around and teasing us with some amazing visuals. Today DroidGamers has some much better footage with shooting and an actual real gameplay hands-on coming out of E3.

Shadowgun is a stunning OTS (over the shoulder) shooter coming from Madfinger games and they have been working closely with Nvidia to produce this game on Tegra 2, and quad-core Kal-El Android tablets. With their help they have added Nvidia Physx, as well as some incredible looking graphics and light rendering to make this feel just about as close as I’ve seen to a “console quality” game. It really has amazing graphics, the gameplay seems incredibly smooth and like it runs without any issues. If you watch around the 1:20 mark on the video below as the elevator rises you can see some serious lighting effects. I can’t wait to play and review this on my Xoom or Kal-El tablet.

Originally it was stated that this game would be released for Nvidia Tegra 2 and Tegra 3 (Kal-El quad-core) devices but now they are reporting that a watered down version with less Physx and lighting effects will also be released for other top tier android devices that don’t feature a Tegra chip. So at least other users will have the option to still enjoy this game but it sure looks to take full advantage of Tegra so why play it on anything else?

Vodafone Lists Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 with 1.2 GHz Processor?

Posted: 08 Jun 2011 02:30 PM PDT

With the launch of Samsung’s new Galaxy Tab 10.1 today, albeit exclusively at the Union Square Best Buy in NYC, Vodafone UK announced it would be switching to the new thinner model as well. Well it appears Vodafone is planning on selling a version that’s also clocked a bit higher than the ones given out at Google IO. We’ve yet to see or hear anything to confirm this, but it’s repeated several times on Vodafone’s site.

The original, thicker, Galaxy Tab 10.1 sold by Vodafone as well as the limited edition of the new version given out at Google IO both featured 1 GHz Tegra 2 processors, and if you ask Samsung’s official page, so do the retail versions of the slimmed down Tab 10.1. Vodafone UK’s website lists, both in the overview and features sections, that they will be selling a tablet containing a 1.2 GHz processor of unknown manufacturer.

Reports have said the version being sold today at the NYC Best Buy also have Tegra 2s, but this wouldn’t be the first time Samsung included a last minute spec bump, as they did with the Galaxy S II. Whether this was a mistake or the Vodafone version will be packing a different processor such as Samsung’s Exynos is yet to be seen. We’ll reach out to Vodafone and see what they have to say on the matter and let you know!

Motorola Says Emails Regarding LTE Update for Xoom were a Mistake

Posted: 08 Jun 2011 02:04 PM PDT

Well it looks like the wait continues. Yesterday we reported that several Verizon Xoom owners were receiving emails from Motorola requesting they send in their Xooms for the 4G upgrade. Today Motorola says those emails shouldn’t have gone out and that there is still not a hard date for the upgrades to begin.

Motorola promised customers purchasing the Verizon 3G enabled Xoom they would be able to upgrade to Verizon’s shiny new LTE soon after launch. It’s been more than three months now since the tablet’s release and no word, but with the comment that this email was a mistake came some idea. Moto says that the upgrade will come sometime this summer. While it isn’t much compared to the let down that the email isn’t real time frames are better than sitting in the dark.

A very small number of Motorola XOOM users recently received an email from Motorola regarding the 4G LTE upgrade process. While we are very excited about being able to offer the upgrade this summer, and know our customers are equally excited about the benefits that 4G LTE speeds will bring to their Motorola XOOM, the email was sent in error. We apologize for any confusion this may have caused, and look forward to being able to share more specifics on how — and when — users can take advantage of 4G LTE on their Motorola XOOM in the near future.

The response came from Phandroid, who also point out that the accidental email could be an indication that Motorola is getting ready to start the upgrade, as they have an email composed, and ready to send. We’re still not sure what’s taking so long to get the upgrade ready though. Nvidia’s recent claim that the Tegra 2 is fully compatible with LTE and the several delays and redesign of Moto’s Droid Bionic seem to indicate something about LTE isn’t the easiest to work with. With the kind of speeds people are reporting on Verizon’s version of 4G, the wait may yet prove to be worth it.

HTC Sensation 4G selling Early at Walmart [Pics]

Posted: 08 Jun 2011 01:28 PM PDT

The news just keeps coming in regarding this, it looks like Walmart is indeed selling the HTC Sensation 4G early for the low price just mentioned of $148.88 to a lucky few. We are seeing reports of this now from others as well but we have some pictures from one of our lucky readers that purcahsed two in Texas.

One of our readers Mdboze was lucky enough to get two Sensation 4G’s for this low price. The manager even checked “the system” to make sure they were ok to start selling today and apparently got the okay. So he quickly purchased two of them and was nice enough to send us the hint. Check it out:

If you have been waiting for the HTC Sensation 4G I think now is the time to run down to your nearest Walmart and give it a shot, I think I’ll be doing the same in a few minutes. We are not sure if they are selling on-contract only or if they will sell them outright for full price as well. More details will be coming shortly as we dig deep.

Thanks again Mdboze!

HTC Sensation 4G Walmart Ad Leaked, Priced at $148.88 [Exclusive]

Posted: 08 Jun 2011 01:03 PM PDT

The fun is starting early and we have just got word that Walmart will not only be selling the HTC Sensation 4G earlier than T-Mobile’s launch date of June 15th, but that they will also be offering it for the extremely low price and amazing deal of just $148.88 on a new contract of course. The flyer does have a misprint stating the device to have a 4.5″ screen when in fact it is 4.3″ but I’m not to worried about that. I just want the phone now, and for that advertised price.

At the beginning of the month the Sensation landing page at T-Mobile went live stating a June 15th launch and that Walmart would be accepting pre-orders starting as soon as June 12th. If that information didn’t have anyone excited the flyer shown above should because that is a pretty solid price to have one of the best Android smartphones on the planet.

This is just developing and we will bring you more as the news unleashes.

– Thanks Mdboze

Google Maps Now Knows When Your Bus is Late

Posted: 08 Jun 2011 12:51 PM PDT

At least it does if you live in one of the six cities Google has so far partnered with. Boston, Portland, San Diego, and San Francisco, as well as Madrid and Turin across the pond, have all worked with Google to include a real-time schedule of their public transit systems in the latest version of Google Maps. This update brings peace of mind to commuters previously left waiting at stops, with just the knowledge of when their bus should have arrived.

This update comes to the official Google Maps Android app, as well as the desktop and mobile web-apps. While the service is initially only available in the 6 cities mentioned, Google says they’re working with several other public transit authorities to expand the “live departure times” feature to other cities. In the meantime, the service is now live in those cities, so if you’re a commuter in one of the six, try it out.

The feature is built right into maps and navigation. If you click on a supported transit station in maps, it will display the schedule, with special icons indicating “live departures.” Navigation using public transit will also utilize these real-time schedules when available, helping you get a more accurate arrival time.

Angry Birds Rio Update Teased, Carnival Levels On The Way

Posted: 08 Jun 2011 12:40 PM PDT

Our friends at Rovio just teased us all with some new and upcoming Episodes for the highly popular Angry Birds Rio. The newest update coming soon is called Carnival and even though the teaser says out “now” it’s not out yet but will be coming soon. From the look of things the Rovio train full of Angry Birds wont be slowing down any time soon, they’ve been updating all 3 major version on a fairly regular basis now. Is anyone ready to play something else yet?

Don’t get me wrong, Angry Birds is extremely fun and addicting but I feel like I’ve played a little too much of it lately. That and the fact that it doesn’t feel the same unless I’m playing on my 10″ Motorola Xoom, my phone just doesn’t cut it for me anymore.

I’ll quit crying about loving it on my larger screen for those that aren’t lucky enough to have a Honeycomb tablet yet, but I will urge you to go snag that Galaxy Tab 10.1 that is up for pre-order now. Check out the teaser video below of all the upcoming excitement in Angry Birds Rio: Carnival

Motorola Xoom Keyboard Folio Case now only $85, Free 2-Day Shipping

Posted: 08 Jun 2011 12:08 PM PDT

Verizon and Motorola have finally made available the Keyboard Folio case for the Motorola Xoom. Although it looks nice it does not come cheap, one sale now over at Verizon’s Accessory Store for the low price of $84.99. It features a super thin keyboard and the entire Xoom is wrapped in a leather pouch so it will be completely protected while in use.

There is nothing more than a generic photo up at the Verizon Store so we don’t know if they have added cutouts for ports and charging or anything of that nature but we will report on that when we know more. For now head over and get your own so you can report back to us here at AndroidCommunity about any ports and or the quality of the case as we would love to hear from you.

Right now might be a good time to get the Folio Case for your Motorola Xoom because the 4G LTE upgrade is coming soon and you will be out and about enjoying your tablet and a keyboard sure would make things easier. Stay tuned for more information.
