SlashGear Reviews the T-Mobile Sensation 4G Posted: 03 Jun 2011 11:10 AM PDT Behold, our main man Vincent has his hands on the USA version of the HTC kingship the T-Mobile Sensation 4G! This is a phone that’s taking the next step in the HTC evolution as well as the processor power for Android devices evolution – Qualcomm’s 1.2GHz dual-core processor for the win! Vince racks his brain for the wisdom to choose between this device and the Galaxy S II, the phone to beat! Which one wins out? We shall see – we shall ALSO see direct from Android Community when we run our very OWN review later today – be here to check it out!
Vince reminds us of the specs of the Sensation, going through its 4.3-inch qHD 960 x 540 display, 1.2GHz MSM8660 asynchronous dual-core, Adreno 220 GPU, 768MB of RAM, 1GB of ROM, WiFi b/g/n and Bluetooth 3.0, plus its 8-megapixel camera on the back, VGA camera on the front, and the fact that it’s no Super AMOLED Plus-toting device when it comes down to it. Have a full look at Vince’s decision of what the final verdict should be at SlashGear and report back to us with what you believe is the true truth! Meanwhile check out his photos of Weezer and see his hands-on video below this paragraph. Will the pebble out-perform the thinnest box? We shall see! [via SlashGear] ) |
X-Men by Konami for Android Review Posted: 03 Jun 2011 11:00 AM PDT What’s something I did not expect today but am undeniably glad that it’s arrived in my apps folder? Why, Konami’s original version of X-Men for the arcade, of course, that mega-giant arcade console game that 6 people could stand around with their joystick and three buttons for movement and attack, the one that everyone liked to play in the early 1990s, the late 1990s, and of course now here in the early and late 2000s and 2010s. You may be unable to find one of these setups in your local arcade today, but what you CAN grab today instead is this mobile version from the Android Market – pixels ahoy and mutant battles ahead!
This game will bring you back instantly to that smelly old dark video arcade hut in the mall you remember so well, those bright red joysticks and the buttons you’d only be able to press as long as your friends where there to back you up in the true X-Men way. Yes indeed, you’d have the choice between 6 characters, that being Cyclops, Colossus, Wolverine, Storm, Nightcrawler, and everyone’s favorite: DAZZLER! Each character has a unique set of attacks, both a melee attack and a special mutant power, and a jump button active. Of course everyone knows that Nightcrawler is best since he flies all around the screen with his special, so you’ll be picking him for certain. Once you press start, you’ll notice the exact same comic book cinematics as in the original 1992 classic, pixels and all. Once you’re playing you’ll again notice that you’re fighting with pixels – lovely, awesome pixels that are magnified in their pixel-ness by the controls and life-meter which are smooth and modern. Slickness to let you know they didn’t skimp, they’re just paying homage. Will the new generation of gamers who never got to experience this game in the arcade appreciate the gameplay and retro nature of the gameplay? We shall see. That said, they’ll certainly have to appreciate that you’re instantly able to hook up with Facebook and Openfeint for multiplayer – multiplayer is what this game is all about, right? Heck yeah! Also you’ll notice that we’re demoing the game on the HTC Flyer, a tablet of some note – pay close attention to the slight oddities in the menus and select screens as it appears that parts of the game aren’t quite prepared to be working on a screen as large as this tablet is rolling out with. That said, you can purchase the game for yourself NOW in the Android Market right over [in this link] for $2.99 – worth that price ALL day long. Check it out! ) |
Motorola CEO Blames Device Returns on Android Market, Looks to MOTOBLUR to Mend Posted: 03 Jun 2011 09:42 AM PDT It appears that the reason why 70-percent of all returned Motorola devices the company is aware of are the result of applications that have affected usability, that’s what Motorola CEO Sanjay Jha noted during a webcast of the Bank of America Merrill Lynch Global Technology conference. These 3rd party apps coming in throughout he Android Market have resulted in a less then optimized experience, noted Jha, Google’s approach on apps, he said, is basically sub-bar and is definitely a problem.
"For power consumption and CPU use, those apps are not tested," Jha said at the conference, "We're beginning to understand the impact that has." The process an app must go through to be accepted in the Google’s official Android Market is very hands-off when compared to the rigorous testing an app must go through to be accepted to, for example, the Apple Appstore. Google relies on reports from users and reviews from downloaders of said apps to make sure malicious apps aren’t spread too vigorously. What Jha says Motorola is turning to instead is their custom user interface over Android: MOTOBLUR. While this system was once just a tweak here or there as well as a social networking aggregator, it’s now evolving into a virtual representation of what Jha is warning against. What MOTOBLUR is set to do now is gather feedback on what users are doing, what apps they are downloading and, most importantly, which titles are causing problems. Is this something you’d be excited about, users? Jha noted that the MOTOBLUR of the future will be able to warn users of how harshly an app will affect your battery, giving you more insight as to how an app will affect your device before you even install it. Will this and other similar perks be able to convince the public not to root their phones just to get rid of what they consider a useless modification to their pure Android system? We shall see. You can access the full webcast containing the quotes above by heading over to Veracast. [via SlashGear] ) |

If you ever needed proof that Samsung Galaxy S II devs are geeks, here it is Posted: 03 Jun 2011 07:29 AM PDT Geeks and comic books are like peanut butter and jelly, they go together perfectly. Apparently, Paul O’Brian was digging around in the ROM of his Samsung Galaxy S II and came across the image below. Yep, that is our pal the Android bot having a bit of cosplay dressed as Ironman with the Flash symbol on his chest. The question is why is it in the ROM?
What exactly did the guy who put it there think it would be used for? Most importantly, are there any other little Easter Eggs hiding in there that we can pull out. I’d sort of like to see Android as the Incredible Hulk since the Hulk is green and all. We can pretend that this is Ironman from the first flick that wasn't a total turd. I like to see pics like this so we know the guys working on the hardware we like so much have a sense of humor. That might make cool wallpaper for your home screen if you are an Android using Ironman fan who happens to develop Flash content. [via Paul O'Brien] ) |
Samsung stalls Galaxy Tab Euro release after Honeycomb hold-up Posted: 03 Jun 2011 06:50 AM PDT Yesterday we mentioned that the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 would be hitting the US in limited quantities on June 8 at one Best Buy location in NYC. We also mentioned that pre orders would start everywhere on June 8 for the 10.1 with full availability of the tablet on June 16 for the US. If you are, a fan of the tablet in Europe that has been hoping that meant you would be able to get the device about the same time, bad news.
Eldar Murtazin is says that Europeans won’t be able to get the Galaxy Tab 10.1 or 8.9 until about August. Note we don't say “delay” because Samsung has never promised the Galaxy Tab 10.1 on a specific date for Europe so it can't be delayed. Murtazin also says that the Samsung tablets are being offset from the US launch in Europe due to Android 3.1 issues. It’s interesting that if there are issues, the US tablet uses Android 3.1 as well. Are we to presume this means Samsung is launching the tablet in the US with some sort of problem? Murtazin has a decent track record with these sorts of rumors so for now we will take his word and hold out for official confirmation from Samsung on a European launch. [via Eldar Murtazin] ) |
HTC ChaCha on sale next week confirms Vodafone UK Posted: 03 Jun 2011 03:09 AM PDT Vodafone UK has confirmed to Android Community that the HTC ChaCha is going on sale next week, the first of HTC’s “Facebook phones” from MWC 2011 back in February. Offering Android 2.3 with a custom Facebook widget and interface, the ChaCha has both a touchscreen and a physical QWERTY keyboard. Interestingly, Vodafone will also be offering bundled BT OpenZone WiFi hotspot access with the ChaCha, letting users get online via hotspot rather than use their data allowance. Although pricing for the smartphone – and the plans it will be paired with – hasn’t been confirmed, HTC always intended the ChaCha to be a budget device, and free WiFi can only help reduce monthly data bills. The ChaCha has a dedicated Facebook button that allows users to share whatever they’re doing on their Facebook wall, along with a 5-megapixel camera and the usual mixture of WiFi, Bluetooth and GPS. SIM-free sales are expected to begin on June 6. There’s a pre-interest sign-up page for Vodafone here. ) |
XPERIA Play and Arc Android/Facebook update out for Vodafone handsets Posted: 03 Jun 2011 03:06 AM PDT Sony Ericsson’s Android 2.3.3 update for the XPERIA Play and XPERIA Arc has been released for Vodafone UK’s versions of the two smartphones. The updates bring the two handsets up to speed with Google’s latest version of the OS, as well as adding in Facebook Inside XPERIA integration as on the mini and mini pro. Rather than an OTA update, the new firmware is delivered using a USB connection to your computer and the Sony Ericsson Update Service app. Vodafone says it will also improve voice quality, device stability, email setup and Exchange account performance, and introduce various bugfixes and security enhancements. Full instructions for the Play are here and for the Arc are here. Let us know how you get on! ) |
Samsung Smart View for Galaxy S II allows streaming from HDTV Posted: 03 Jun 2011 01:19 AM PDT Samsung has released its Smart View app for the Galaxy S II, allowing users of the dual-core smartphone to stream content from a smart TV directly to their phone. The app allows the phone to not only control a Samsung TV, but to pull content from it – whether broadcast, cable, Blu-ray or some other input – over WiFi. We’ve been tracking Samsung’s Smart View technology for a while now, and played with a prototype of the system back in April. As you can see from the demo below, the phone acts as a remote and as a preview window, capable of showing different content to what’s being displayed on-screen on the TV itself. The Samsung Smart View app is a free download from the Android Market. You’l obviously need a compatible TV from Samsung’s D7000, D8000 or D9500 series, too. A version for the Galaxy player (YP-GB70) is expected in July, with Galaxy S and Galaxy Tab builds due later in 2011. Press Release: ) |
HTCdev and OpenSense SDK get official: Coming Summer 2011 Posted: 03 Jun 2011 12:21 AM PDT HTC has officially launched HTCdev, it’s mobile developer support program with the accompanying OpenSense SDK that it revealed at Uplinq 2011, this week allowing developers to get up close and code-personal with HTC Sense on the company’s smartphones. Expected to launch this summer, HTCdev.com will have a library of tutorials, best practices, documentation and support, along with a way for developers to communicate with HTC. As for the OpenSense SDK, that will deliver the APIs for integration with HTC Sense 3.0. As well as the pen-input APIs, as used on the Flyer, there’ll be 3D systems for HTC’s upcoming 3D handsets, like the EVO 3D. HTCdev continues the work HTC began last year with HTCpro. Last month, the company announced that, moving forward, it would be unlocking bootloaders on its Android devices so as to make third-party modifications more straightforward. Press Release: ) |
Uplinq 2011 Daily Showing hosting our very own Vincent Nguyen [Video] Posted: 02 Jun 2011 03:47 PM PDT We have been coverering the Uplinq 2011 Event going on as of late you can check all of our coverage on that here. Qualcomm has had a lot to show over these last few days from 3D, augmented reality, gaming and more. We cover most of those things in the link above so feel free to check out all of our coverage. We now have a short video for you featuring our own natural born leader Vincent Nguyen in an interview with Cali Lewis from the Uplinq Daily Show.
They talk about Augmented reality and how it can be used in real world day to day situations, not just for finding a movie or other things of that nature. We have covered Qualcomm’s Augmented Reality here already once before. They talk about the Xperia Play and what it brings to the table regarding gaming, and as a phone. A little humor along the way doesn’t help either, I think I’d game over answering the phone if I had to choose. I’ll get right down to it, check out Vince being interviewed at this years Uplinq 2011 and you can find the rest of the Uplinq Daily Show Videos at the source below. [via Qualcomm YouTube] ) |
Uplinq 2011: Qualcomm Demo’s Games on ASUS MeMO Honeycomb Tablet [Video] Posted: 02 Jun 2011 03:27 PM PDT Keeping up with all the action at this years Uplinq 2011 Qualcomm went right into some gaming. Next we have a video demo of the ASUS Eee MeMO Tablet powered by a 1.2 Ghz dual-core Snapdragon processor and from what we know this should be a glasses-free 3D device. It has an active stylus like the HTC Flyer and should ship running on Honeycomb.
Our man Vince was live at the event walking around and was lucky enough to get a shot of the ASUS MeMO tablet before the demo as well. We didn’t get a hands-on with the device but we will throw those photos down below for your viewing pleasure. Back to the video Qualcomm had two Gameloft games to show off today. Real Soccer 2011 HD, as well as Spider-Man Total Mayhem. Check them out in the video below: Both games look extremely smooth and the graphics are top notch. Qualcomm has partnered with Gameloft in the past and we hope to be seeing more games like the ones from this video in the near future. High quality games that perform well with smooth frames per second and give users a seamless gaming experience. The cinematic scene after scoring a goal in Real Soccer is a nice touch and we hope to get more hands-on with this game in the near future. Spider-Man also looks incredible to say the least. Marvel Comics have been around for a while and have been helping developers create amazing games for a long time. Spider-man plays very fluent and doesn’t get choppy or slow from what we are seeing. Games that performance drop to much in game-play really takes from the experience and we are proud to say that Gameloft and Qualcomm have been working hard to keep things clean. With the improved performance we are seeing and the rapid growth of technology I can only imagine how these types of games will be next year this time. For more information about gaming on Android and to see some of what Qualcomm has done to ensure users will have a top gaming experience check out the Qualcomm Snapdragon Game Pack. ) |
Uplinq 2011: Multi-burst Photo Demo and 3D Capture on EVO 3D [Video] Posted: 02 Jun 2011 02:28 PM PDT Next up at this years Uplinq 2011 event was the Qualcomm Snapdragon Super Session showing off what your apps can do if you target Snapdragon. They had some exciting things to talk about any many different demos and we will be reporting on it as they come in. What we have here is a demo of the HTC EVO 3D recording and playing back in 3D as well as some other cool features like multi-burst photo capture and something called “Rewind”. The video shows how powerful and amazing this really is.
This technology is brought to us by Scalado and Qualcomm on Snapdragon powered phones. What we see here is a mini Vegas-like show and then some multi-burst capture done on the EVO 3D, then this is where the Scalado technology comes into play. It captures multiple shots in real time with zero shutter lag and you can choose as many or as few as you’d like. The user is then able to use the feature they are calling “Rewind” to actually rewind to different points inside the image, if one persons eyes were shut you can choose one of the other captures and use it. If someones head was turned just choose another you like and combine them into one large image. Watch the video below to see this in real time: Basically this takes all the mistakes and issues out of photo taking and really makes use of some cool and advanced features. This is just the tip of the iceberg and one small example of the things Qualcomm has planned for the Snapdragon line of devices, especially those running on Android. This next video is an extended versions of what is posted above but rather than showing the multi-burst camera they show the EVO 3D capturing 3D video. Things look extremely smooth and we sure can’t wait to get more hands on the EVO 3D for some testing and playtime. |
Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 to Launch with Stock Honeycomb 3.1 Posted: 02 Jun 2011 02:06 PM PDT Samsung just announced that the Galaxy Tab 10.1, given away early to attendees of Google IO (see the review here) will be available over the next two weeks, and they snuck in a little surprise. As had been rumored, the Galaxy Tab 10.1 will indeed launch with the latest version of Honeycomb, Android 3.1 on board. The extra bonus here is that to meet the deadline, the Tab will be running stock 3.1, rather than have Samsung’s TouchWiz UX skin as originally planned.
The news was indirectly mentioned in the press release today announcing the dates for the Samsung tablet, when at the bottom it said that TouchWiz UX would be available as an additional download at a later date. A comment from the president and CEO of Samsung, Dale Sohn, confirms that making sure the Galaxy Tab 10.1 launched with Android 3.1 was a primary goal. It appears that this goal has come at the cost (or to some, bonus) of no Samsung UI skin. There is no confirmation that later down the road, the device will not ship with TouchWiz. This news is an indication of how manufacturers UI skins, if nothing else, slow down upgrades. While it does naturally take time to make adaptions for different screens, chipsets and the like, the main reason many phones don’t get an upgrade for so long is because of the time it takes to work skins like HTC’s Sense, Motorblur, or Samsung’s TouchWiz UI on top of them. I for one am a fan of stock Android, and would take an upgraded version of Android without a skin over an older version with a UI any day. I’m glad to see Samsung give priority to the upgrade in this case, and think that offering their UI for download at a later date was a good compromise on their part So if you love stock Android, and love Android tablets thinner than the iPad, you can pick up the Galaxy Tab 10.1 starting June 8th at the Best Buy in Union Square in New York, NY, or nationwide June 17th. ) |
Tampermonkey App Brings Augmented Browsing to Android Posted: 02 Jun 2011 01:29 PM PDT Now if you are a fan of the Greasemonkey Firefox extension or Tampermonkey’s Chrome version, you’re probably thinking “awesome!”, while the rest of us are thinking “what’s augmented browsing?” Apps like Tampermonkey allow you to utilize scripts to make changes to websites as you browse. This is very open ended, but to give you a better idea, of what this means, some of the popular uses for such apps are removing ads, auto-filling forms, or transposing info from another site, onto the one you’re viewing.
Obviously this is a very powerful tool, but it needs scripts to do anything. Luckily, this app is compatible with Greasemonkey scripts as well as Chrome Tampermonkey scripts, meaning it should be able to use any pre-existing script you can dig up on the internet. The downside here is that they may not run perfectly. The developer of the app states that it is still in beta, and that since phones are not as powerful as the computers that use the Chrome app it’s adapted from, it may be a bit sluggish for now. Given its limitations, Tampermonkey doesn’t appear to be quite ready for the big time yet. If you’re familiar with Greasemonkey or Tampermonkey and want to test out scripts to lend a hand to its development head over to the XDA thread and jump on in. For the rest of us, given the beta status and the current lack on instructions, waiting may be the wiser choice. The app shows great promise though and could shape up to be an awesome tool as it progresses to it’s final stage. [via XDA] ) |
Sony Announces Over 20 New Games to be Demoed for Xperia Play at E3 Posted: 02 Jun 2011 12:53 PM PDT In the past E3 has belonged to the major video game companies, but as gaming is ramping up on phones and tablets, expect to see a lot more Android at the gaming conference in coming years. Case in point, Sony Ericsson has announced over twenty new games that will be coming to the Android, including ten that will be exclusive to their Xperia Play. Sony Ericsson says the games will be made available over the coming months, but many of them will be available to demo at their booth at E3.
The Xperia Play (check out our review here) is obviously not your conventional phone. With a set of Playstation-style controls, the Xperia Play was a phone made for gaming, and with the entire Android Market at its disposal, its not short for content. Sony Ericsson, however, is working to make sure the Xperia Play is THE phone for gamers, with a slew of exclusive content. Among the games Sony Ericsson will be making exclusive to the Play are the popular game Minecraft and a Tom Clancy game, Rainbow 6 Shadow Vanguard. We’ll have to see if any of these exclusive games ever make it to other devices, as many of them have been created with physical controls in mind, rather then the touch screen. Sony Ericsson gamers are the ones who will be buying this phone, and they seem to be committed to it. Be sure to stay tuned for coverage from E3 next week. ) |
Pantech Crossover Hands-On and Unboxing Posted: 02 Jun 2011 12:46 PM PDT We’ve just gotten the cool mid-range Android phone on AT&T by the name of Pantech Crossover in the house, and we’re unboxing the heck out of it. The Crossover is Pantech’s first Android effort in the USA and it’s running Android 2.2.1 Froyo with a 3.1-inch touch screen and slide-out QUERTY keyboard. It’s rough and tough, costs a total of $69.99 with a 2-year contract attached, and rolls out with a custom user interface that’s all Pantech’s own. Will it win over your new-to-smartphones friends and relatives to the Android side?
Right out of the box this device appears to be a much more unique piece of hardware than we’ve seen in the past for mid-ranged phones, the gray, black, and yellow accents on this Pantech device sure to win over those looking to run an Android device that’s not so candy-bar-ish. It’s got two physical buttons and two touchscreen buttons for the four standard Android set, plus a single Lock/PWR button and a single Function button, both of these sitting above the AT&T logo at the top of the device if you’re holding it portrait-wise. This Function button brings up a screen containing a set of apps that you yourself add for ease of access. The slider is just the right amount of tough, the volume buttons are under the keyboard, and there’s a physical camera button aside a covered USB port behind the slider for, again, ease of use. The display is a 320 x 480 HBGA resolution and its overall size is 4.45-inches x 2.28-inches x .56-inches, and it’s light as a feather at 5.15-oz. The battery is a 1500 mAh which we expect to be lasting approximately forever, and onboard memory support 512 MHB while the microSD card slot supports up to 32GB (with a 2GB card already installed.) Sound alright for a sub-$100 handset? We’ll be reviewing this device in full over the next few days! ALSO can’t wait to compare to the following similar-range phones! Toshiba Thrive Honeycomb Tablet coming this July for $429 Posted: 02 Jun 2011 12:11 PM PDT The Toshiba Thrive is the name of the Toshiba tablet we have covered a few times. We even saw it way back in January looking the same as it does now. It was originally known as the Regza and original leaks suggested a $700 price tag. Today we have better news that this tablet will be starting as low as $429
The Toshiba Thrive will be the first tablet by Toshiba in the U.S and will be making its way to the market starting June 13th for pre-orders at Best Buy and other retailers and it will ship early July. It boasts the usual specs for a Honeycomb tablet and will come with Android 3.1, a 10.1″ 1280×800 resolution display as well as some competitive pricing. They will offer 3 models: 8GB for $429, 16GB for $479, and the 32GB for $579. The lowest starting at $429 is a smart move and even the 16GB is slightly cheaper than the Galaxy Tab 10.1 but the 32GB Transformer is already cheaper. The Thrive features all those other specs most of the tablets of late have. Such as Wifi, Bluetooth, HDMI and USB ports, Micro SD slots and can’t forget about cameras. It has a 5MP rear and 2MP front for video chat. It also has a lock button for portrait or landscape mode as well as having a removable battery so it should fair well, and also be different from the rest. Stay tuned for more information. HTC Keynote at Uplinq 2011: OnLive, HTC Dev, HTC Watch, and HTC Pro Posted: 02 Jun 2011 11:42 AM PDT The second main keynote at this years Uplinq 2011 was all about HTC. They started off with comments about NFC, the cloud, and the start of 4G. They quickly led into some more exciting topics such as HTC Watch and the new partnership with OnLive for the future of gaming with HTC.
We have already heard a lot about HTC Watch when they unveiled the Sensation and the EVO 3D. HTC Watch will be a global media hub that will be deeply tied into HTC devices for streaming and consuming data and entertainment such as movies and TV. OnLive is a new partnership with HTC that will bring rich and feature filled gaming to new levels for HTC users. They go on to mention that OnLive will not be just about gaming, but will also stream real-time applications such as AutoCAD and other education and work related applications right to your handheld device. Peter Chou, CEO of HTC noted that HTC is the number one Android brand and supplier "everywhere in the world." Chou went on to say that "HTC believes in giving people choice."
Then Chou moved on to Mobile Development and had some things to say about the developers. He noted there is over 450k Android developers and they will be launching HTC Pro. A new program that will lend a helping and learning hand to developers of all sizes, big or small. HTC recognized that they themselves are developers and would like to help out smaller teams or developers any way they can. Some of those include HTC Dev, and HTC SDK’s all being available in an open source library. More on that at htcdev.com where you can download as many SDK’s as you’d need. Next up we have a Qualcomm Snapdragon event and a few more keynotes over the next few days so stay tuned right here at AndroidCommunity.com for all your Uplinq 2011 news.
