Samsung Dart headed to T-Mobile June 15th

Posted: 08 Jun 2011 11:18 AM PDT

T-Mobile plans to add another mid-range smartphone to their ever growing lineup while showing no signs of heading to AT&T. If you remember the day June 15th, it is when the amazing HTC Sensation 4G will be launching on T-Mobile. Now reports are streaming in that they will be offering a mid-range handset for those that don’t need the dual-core power of the Sensation. T-Mobile will be releasing the Galaxy Mini and it will be named the Samsung Dart.

The cute little Dart features a 240×320 display, 2MP camera, and Android 2.2 and, according to the source it will launch on June 15th along with the Sensation 4G like we mentioned above. The device is a low to mid-rage phone that is for sure but it is nice to see T-Mobile trying to cover all the bases with our favorite phones of all times… Android!

T-Mobile as well as Samsung have recently announced two other mid-range phones and they are the Samsung Exhibit 4G and the Gravity Smart. One would think they’ve got the mid-range phone area covered but we can’t complain while getting even more choices for our dollars.

Motorola Droid Bionic Benchmarked, Shows Gingerbread and Dual-core OMAP4 CPU

Posted: 08 Jun 2011 10:36 AM PDT

Could the Motorola Droid Bionic be the first phone to launch on Verizon with both a dual-core processor and blazing fast 4G LTE on board? From the look of things as of late that might be just what you will all be getting come launch. We originally saw the Bionic at CES 2011 and then closely following it were delay after delay. Recently some benchmarks were leaked showing the Bionic running the qHD screen that has recently been confirmed but also sporting a TI OMAP 4 series CPU and the PowerVR SGX540 GPU.

Now to start off the benchmark does look a little odd. The Nenamark results are showing a score of 24.00 flat across the board, usually there is a min/max score present so this could very well be fake, or it was stopped early but Nenamark got enough to publish a result. Either way we like what we are seeing as far as that PowerVR SGX540 GPU inside.

From looking at these results we can conclude that Motorola may have dropped Tegra 2 for the OMAP 4 CPU instead, this would be a change by Motorola as the Atrix and Droid X2 both sport Tegra 2 CPU’s. This also lines up with similar reports that the Droid 3 will have the same CPU. The Droid 3 is another dual-core device by Verizon that will not launch with 4G LTE according to reports so that same question remains — will the Droid Bionic be the first dual-core 4G LTE for Verizon? If the results above as well as the photo below showing 4G LTE are both accurate then the answer is YES.

HTC Comments: There’s no Sensation “death grip” Issue

Posted: 08 Jun 2011 10:09 AM PDT

The HTC Sensation is getting close to that release date and everyone seems to be excited about it. We loved it in our initial review, and same goes for our sister site SlashGear and their review. Earlier in the week reports suggested the device was suffering from “death grip” style reception issues similar to the iPhone 4 problem. More information after the break.

Our friends over at SlashGear have been shooting a few questions regarding this at HTC and they’ve finally received a reply, basically the answer was “No” this is not an issue. The actual reply by HTC is singing a similar tune as Apple did over their “death grip” issues.

"Every phone experiences a slight variation in signal strength when the antenna is covered in its entirety by a palm and/or fingers" HTC explained. "However, under normal circumstances this does not affect the performance of the phone."

So all you waiting patiently for the Sensation 4G feel free to jump on it come June 15th. I’d like to mention between our European version as well as the T-Mobile Sensation 4G versions we have on hand here at SlashGear/AndroidCommunity none experienced issues or signal losses different from any other device in a similar situation. Between this news and the fact that HTC is working on a bootloader fix for the Sensation 4G my worries are gone and I’ll be picking one up come next week. What about you guys?

Samsung Galaxy S II Confirmed by Verizon, Coming in July

Posted: 08 Jun 2011 09:37 AM PDT

Today Verizon Wireless has just confirmed what we all figured would happen and were hoping for at the same time. The blazing fast and super thin Samsung Galaxy S II will be launching on Verizon Wireless coming this July. From what we are hearing it will be called the Galaxy S II Function, as well as the Attain and Within on other carriers. Pretty wild names that is for sure.

Today Computerworld received news that Verizon would be launching this phone come July but they don’t have any other details, there is no word on the official name as hinted above or anything regarding an actual release date. July is not to far away so don’t worry Big Red customers you’ll have this phone soon enough.

Make sure you check out the Galaxy S II Review and Extreme unboxing by our man Chris Davies. He was lucky enough to unbox the SGSII while flying down the road in a rally car. This initial news mentions a version for all other U.S. carriers but T-Mobile is still not listed but hopefully they will jump on board soon. Stay tuned for more information about this superphone.

WildTangent has plans to rent Android games

Posted: 08 Jun 2011 08:38 AM PDT

This plan sounds really wild. Apparently, WildTangent plans to rent games to Android users. The thing that sounds weird is that most of the games for Android are cheap to start with and many of them are free. The service form WildTangent will launch later this year and will reportedly count some of the fees towards purchase.

Looking closer at the plan, it actually sounds like something very interesting, but it may well mean the end of free versions of some games. The idea for instance is that if a game sells for $1, you could rent the game for a day for 25 cents to see if you like it. If you do, the buyer could pay the rest of the purchase fee with the rental applied to the purchase price.

The Android game would need to download the WildTangent Games app, it will be offered through T-Mobile, and the app will come pre-loaded on future T-Mo phones. The app will have a catalog of games that can be rented for as low as a single virtual coin, worth 25 cents. Presumably, titles that are more expensive would rent for more money. That would be an interesting way to try the full version of a game to be sure you like it before buying the whole enchilada and realizing the game sucks.

Vodafone UK switches Samsungs: drops Galaxy Tab 10.1v for thinner 10.1

Posted: 08 Jun 2011 05:17 AM PDT

Bad news if you were holding out for an 8-megapixel Galaxy Tab 10.1v in the UK, with Vodafone UK deciding to switch their attentions from the original Samsung slate – announced as an exclusive to the carrier back at its debut in February – to the updated, slimmer version that followed on in March. Vodafone has alerted pre-interest customers to the change in an email today.

Samsung whipped the original 10.1 back into the labs after Apple unveiled the iPad 2, returning at CTIA with a slimmer version that switched out, among other things, the 8-megapixel original camera for a 3-megapixel alternative. Vodafone initially pushed ahead with its plans for the Galaxy Tab 10.1v, launching it in Australia and Germany, but the UK arm has obviously decided the thinner model is more competitive and opted for that instead.

It’s unclear when exactly the Vodafone Galaxy Tab 10.1 will hit the market, with the carrier still yet to announce launch dates or, indeed, pricing. The slate arrives in the US on June 8 in WiFi form, with an LTE version hitting Verizon Wireless this summer.

HTC working on unlocked bootloader for Sensation 4G

Posted: 08 Jun 2011 03:54 AM PDT

The uproar from mobile users of HTC Android devices when the company turned away from the unlocked bootloader policy that other companies were implementing was swiftly and furious. The furor resulted in HTC changing its policies and promising to unlock all future devices so the user can load things they want onto the smartphone. The HTC Sensation smartphones were too close to launch to get the unlocked bootloaders from the factory.

Some concerned owners of the Sensation 4G smartphone on the XDA forums took it upon themselves to quiz HTC and find out what he makers intentions are with unlocking the bootloader on the Sensation 4G. The official response in short is that HTC is working on the unlock. There is no word on an ETA for the unlock or which models the unlock will work for. Sister site SlashGear reviewed both the Sensation and Sensation 4G models previously. You can see the official response from HTC below.

HTC said, “We are currently developing new bootloader unlocked software for your phone. HTC is still committed to allowing our customers to unlock the bootloaders if they wish, however we are still implementing the policy and many updates were already finalized prior to our change in policy. We apologize for the inconvenience, but be assured that we are working on a solution for our customers and our commitment has not changed. Please stay tuned to our official channels for ongoing updates on how we will be implementing this policy.”

Nook Touch hidden browser pulled into the light

Posted: 08 Jun 2011 03:15 AM PDT

Barnes & Noble has one of the cooler eReaders on the market with the Nook Color. That little eReader has turned out to be a fully fledged Android tablet with lots to offer and a world of hacks and mods to play with for users. It seems that the Color isn’t the only Nook that has some tricks hiding up its little digital sleeves. A hidden browser on the Nook Touch has been spied. The prospects of surfing the web on a black and white screen might not seem that appealing at first glance.

However, reading a site that is mostly content with little in the way of photos on the Touch would be interesting to many owners. The hidden browser is apparently not working as you would hope it would. The fact that the browser is buggy would be the reason it was hidden away. Users report that the browser is faster and nicer than the K3 browser. One user said that the browser has a series of menus accessed via the icon in the upper right corner of the screen including a page for recent downloads.

The same user reports that while a PDF that was downloaded shows in that list, the file can't be found. That would mean no downloading of eBooks using the browser. I wonder if anyone might be able to tweak the browser now that it has been found to operate for downloading books.

XOOM and Iconia Tab A500 in Stock at Target, Never Going to Sell

Posted: 07 Jun 2011 10:58 PM PDT

The following is a bit of a reaction piece, and it’s chock full of opinions, all of them my own, so beware of that before you continue on. What we’ve just received from a faithful one of yourselves, the readers, is a set of three images, three photographs collected today from a Target superstore in mid-Minnesota. What you’ll see is a display of two tablets, both of them Android, and both of them models that we’ve reviewed here before on Android Community. Have a look here and see if you can tell why I’m of the opinion that if this is how these manufacturers intend to sell their product, they’ve got no chance.

Perhaps a little more information on what you’re seeing here will help you set a spark: this is the Motorola XOOM on the left and the Acer Iconia Tab A500 on the right. Both of them are relatively new tablets running Android 3.0 Honeycomb, and they’re both relatively awesome to use and behold. How they’re displayed here is inside some rather basic black metal claws, essentially, with only the volume tabs and the power buttons available for you to be pressing.

As you can see on the Iconia tab, you’ve got a sticker strip with an Android character at the top offering advice on the specs of the tablet. This strip is vital since, if our source is correct, the tablet is neither charged, nor is it plugged in. All the information you’ve got on the tablet is what’s written and what you can glean from the physical presence of the hardware. No screen for impressions galore!

Then the XOOM tablet is in a slightly better situation with a bit of some juice left in her, but because the power button in is such and odd place, (on the back of the tablet), noted by the big white arrow and directions sticker on the left of the display. This tablet does power on, but because it too has not been charging, it warns the user that there’s not much time left for them to be checking out the software before they’re out of luck.

In the next aisle, if I’m not mistaken, since this is what goes on in every Target now, there’s another display with a rather well-situated tablet that’ll knock the socks off of any passerby. This is the iPad 2 display. Everyone understands that they can go to an Apple store to see how the device works or they can simply purchase it here, but none of that matters because it’s under a case. Apple promotes their iPad devices so well that they don’t even need to allow you the ability to touch and feel the software for you to want to purchase the iPad 2 in the store.

Now this is an Android blog, certainly, but one cannot deny the situation here, that being one where Apple is the one with tiger blood. Acer, Motorola, you’ve got to up the ante in Target. You’ve got an alright situation going on with your displays in the carrier stores, sure, but Target is more than just a place where people purchase products. It’s a place where people walk through on the daily, seeing products and learning what they’re all about in a friendly, warm environment. You’ve got to take the time to work out a deal with the store to hold your heads up higher.

Have some pride in Android!

Or at least make sure they’ve got the darned things plugged in.

HTC Thunderbolt Official Replacement Battery on Sale for $19.99

Posted: 07 Jun 2011 05:37 PM PDT

For those of you with a HTC Thunderbolt that spend all there time gaming or movie watching over that 4G LTE, Or just love using the Thunderbolt and feel the need for a spare battery for those times in need, it looks like Verizon has it on sale so now is the best time to purchase one. It is listed as the usual $39.99 online but once added to your cart it drops to $19.99. This is the official OEM replacement, not a ebay knock-off.

If you head over to Verizon’s accessory shopping page you can get it now for that low low price mentioned above. I know I love having a backup battery for conventions, or vacations and those times I just don’t have a charger. Our friends at DroidLife got the details on this little price drop and we thought we’d share the news.

No coupons or anything special is required just head over to the product page and add the $39.99 battery to your cart and then the magic happens and you get a “new discount” dropping the price to $19.99 but I would hurry as it probably wont last for long, if it doesn’t sell out first.

Asphalt 6: Adrenaline for Android Review on Xperia PLAY

Posted: 07 Jun 2011 04:55 PM PDT

The following review is for the game Asphalt 6: Adrenaline as it’s played specifically on the Xperia PLAY, but you can easily glean the information you need to decide weather or not you’d like to download and play the game on any Android platform because the game doesn’t change a significant amount from platform to platform. The difference between your everyday average Android device playing this racing game and the Xperia PLAY is the ease of use in the controls. Afterburner forward with your index finger!

This game comes from Gameloft, this meaning that if you don’t have the game on your device when you take it out of the box, you’re going to have to go to Gameloft to purchase it (this instead of the place most apps are available, the Android Market.) This game comes in several different iterations, the three most notable being the basic Android build with which you’ll be using your touchscreen to steer (or the entire device if you prefer,) the LG Optimus 3D version, and the Xperia PLAY version. The version we’re looking at here today is the Xperia PLAY version, but first let’s have a look at the 3D version via our “Hands-on with 3D” video from our Optimus 3D full review. Have a peek starting at around 1/2 way through the following for some hot 3D racing action:

Asphalt 6: Adrenaline on LG Optimus 3D [starting at about halfway through]

Next let’s literally have a crashin’ good time looking at this app on the Xperia PLAY. This version of the game allows you to utilize the PlayStation controls for steering, turbo, and gassing your way to victory. There are two main objects in this game, one of them being winning the game by being in the first car to cross the finish line. The second is to destroy your competition by literally railroading them off the track or directly into other vehicles. It’s evil awesome.

Asphalt 6: Adrenaline on Xperia PLAY

The graphics are impeccable, the splash screens are the best thing on Android, and slowdown and stopping on every device I’ve tested the game on is nonexistent. Gameloft here presents a flagship racing game that they can be proud to have sitting on the out-of-the-box builds of a whole handful of Android devices. Well played, Gameloft, you’re going to be around for quite some time to come.

You can download Asphalt 6: Adrenaline from Gameloft right now if you’re using any Android device other than the Xperia PLAY. If you’re using the Xperia PLAY, you’d best head to the Xperia PLAY app to access your V-Cast store! Grab it instantly!

Nvidia Claims Tegra 2 has no Compatibility issues with LTE

Posted: 07 Jun 2011 04:03 PM PDT

With devices like the Droid Bionic being delayed and the Motorola Xoom still waiting to get the upgrade to Verizon’s 4G LTE many have started to wonder if there is a compatibility problem with LTE and dual-core devices, since the Tegra 2 has been the hot selling chip on the block people have started asking questions. Today Nvidia fired back and came out swinging.

With Verizon launching the Thunderbolt, and the Droid Charge on 4G yet passing up dual-core phones like the Droid X2 that just made us wonder even more why dual-core was getting left out of the LTE love, I mean a dual-core high-res display phone packing 4G LTE would rock, so where is it? Is that the Bionic? Today it looks like those fellows over at DroidLife finally reached out to Nvidia regarding possible issues and this is what they had to say.

Tegra has no compatibility issues with LTE at all. The Tegra-powered Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 4G LTE tablet runs on Verizon's LTE network and is a perfect example of Tegra working fine w/ 4G LTE. Tegra 2 interfaces with many types of modems via standard interfaces, including LTE. There is nothing inherently unique about LTE as far as Tegra 2 is concerned.

That pretty much clears that up, there isn’t much else they needed to say on that topic. They went ahead and cleared their name quickly with this one so I guess that is a good thing. Now we just have to wonder what the cause really is. Does Verizon just want to control their market and once everyone jumps on the 4G LTE wagon they will release a powerhouse with both 4-6 months later that everyone will drool over and eventually pay full price for if they are still in contract? Sounds like a smart idea to me.

What do you all think, was there some issues that have now been cleared up or was it Verizon all along just releasing devices on the schedule?

Words With Friends v4.0 update coming soon, featuring “way less bugs”

Posted: 07 Jun 2011 02:45 PM PDT

Words With Friends was an extremely popular game on iDevices for a very long time and we were all excited when it finally came to Android. I’ve played more games of WWF then I would like to admit but I eventually gave up because the game was loaded with bugs, my phone would constantly force close (only during WWF) and it would freeze all the time and even caused a few battery pull moments. Those are never fun.

According to Zynga they are about to release the latest update to version 4.0 to the Android Market. They promise “way less bugs”, tons of new features and lots more friends. We got this little heads up on the new version coming soon from our friends over at androidcentral but so far there seems to be nothing in the Android Market regarding an update.

It looks like this update is almost finished and it will be released to the market any time now for us all to enjoy. We may see the same integration of Facebook that iOS got with version 4.0 and that would make sense if they are claiming “more friends” with the release of v4.0. As long as many of those main bugs are gone this will continue to be a hugely popular game. It currently shows v3.41 in the market but hopefully we will see 4.0 coming soon. To download Words With Friends Free in the market click here.

Desert Winds Game Coming to the Xperia Play

Posted: 07 Jun 2011 02:24 PM PDT

Desert Winds is coming to the Xperia Play soon and we have been told it is one of the most visually stunning games to come to mobile. It is based around the beautiful princess Amira that must fight for her peoples survival and freedom. This game has been developed closely with Qualcomm to deliver the best possible experience on their Snapdragon CPU and Adreno graphics and they promise a pretty stellar game. Don’t worry we will be reviewing it soon.

The Xperia Play has been getting all the hot titles lately because of its unique feature set that I’m sure you are all aware of. You can see our Xperia Play review here. Our good man Burnsy (Chris Burns) gets the pleasure of reviewing all of these awesome games on his very own Play so feel free to check out our Xperia Play Reviews Portal.

As soon as a demo or the full game of Desert Winds is released check back here for our review. It looks to be pretty awesome so we can’t wait to get a little hands-on time with it. If you happen to be at E3 this week I hear the gorgeous Amira herself will be at the Sony Ericsson or Xperia booth so go see her live if you get the chance. Check out the video below for more details on the game.

Sony Ericsson Announces Xperia Play Dock with 3 Bonus Games

Posted: 07 Jun 2011 01:50 PM PDT

We already knew Sony Ericsson was going to be promoting the Xperia Play over at E3 this week, and today they’ve announced a new accessory for it. The Xperia Play Experience Pack, as they call it, comes with a standard dock to use as a charging station or to turn your Xperia Play into a desk clock as well as an audio cable and USB cable. The extra bonus is three free games from Gameloft to download for your shiny Playstation phone.

The dock is a pretty run of the mill desk dock that many Android phones have available. The dock makes for a great charging station to dump your phone into at the end of the day, or for you to turn your phone into an alarm clock. This phone is all about games though and that’s the big draw here. Gameloft is offering three “free” downloads from some of their upcoming Android games with the purchase of the pack. The available games are:

Assassin's Creed™ – Altaïr's Chronicles
Uno™
Real Football 2011
Modern Combat 2 : Black Pegasus
Let's Golf! 2
Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell Conviction™
Brothers In Arms® 2: Global Front
N.O.V.A. 2 – Near Orbit Vanguard Alliance
Eternal Legacy

I have a feeling that this may turn into a “buy three games and get a free dock.” The Xperia Play is continuing to push hard. If you’ve got one, and want to see what games are worthy of your fancy new controls, or if you want to see if the gaming experience on the Play is worth it, check out our review and our portal for Xperia game reviews here.

Android Malware issue pops up again

Posted: 07 Jun 2011 01:42 PM PDT

Just last week Google removed around two dozen applications from the market because of more Malware and virus problems. Apparently there were leftovers from the “DroidDreamLight” malware and Google had to flip the switch and remove them for our protection. It looks like more details are emerging about another version that works just the same way and they are calling this “DroidKungFu”.

This news comes from a North Carolina State University Blog, they discuss that the new DroidKungFu works exactly like DroidDream but have developed an advanced way to get past mobile security applications such as Lookout. According to them The malware installs a “backdoor that gives hackers full control of your phone”. This way all the user data is exposed and, even more, “they can turn your phone into a bot – and basically make your smartphone do anything they want”.

From what we are reading these are mostly showing up on 3rd party app stores and chinese sites, as well as shady looking applications so just use caution and only download from a reliable source and read the comments and you should be fine. They do mention this only affects Android 2.2 and earlier versions and that Google has fixed this vulnerability in Android 2.3

Motorola Backtracking on Android Market Accusations

Posted: 07 Jun 2011 01:14 PM PDT

Last week, we reported on Motorola CEO, Sanjay Jha’s comments that the major cause of up to 70% of all Motorola phone returns were because of poor performance due to third party apps downloaded from the Android Market. Now Motorola is saying claiming miscommunication. They are saying that the implication was not that 70% of returns are due specifically to 3rd party apps, but due to software in general.

Now, “software issues” is pretty vague and in reality could be referring to Motorola’s own Motoblur software just as likely as any app from the Android Market. Seeing as how Sanjay Jha DID say he sees Motoblur as a potential solution to these software related returns, we can probably assume they don’t see they’re customizations as the cause. Whether Motorola still does hold the returns against the 3rd party apps, or thinks it’s because of the Android OS itself, which could feed that rumor of Moto working on their own OS.

All speculation aside, given that this seems like a clear backtrack, it means if nothing else, that Motorola realizes how important the developers who publish their apps to the Android Market are. Android’s openness may result in less than perfect apps a lot of the time, but it also fosters some of the most creative and technically powerful apps to run on a mobile device. Hopefully Motorola comes to a bit more of an appreciation for this openness like Samsung has recently.

Huawei Ascend update to Android 2.2 Available Now, Use Caution

Posted: 07 Jun 2011 01:02 PM PDT

Today Metro PCS announced the Huawei Ascend upgrade to Android 2.2 is now available. The Ascend launched back in December and even though this is only for Android 2.2 at least it is seeing the update faster than many other phones in the past. There is no talk regarding Gingerbread for now but an update is an update right.

I did say “use caution” in my title and with good reason. Apparently MetroPCS or Huawei or someone over there is not very familiar with how most of the Android world works regarding updates. The update to Android 2.2 for the Huawei Ascend WILL wipe ALL user data. All your applications, all your games and their save points, your icons on home screens will all be wiped and all. Most updates from almost all other carriers and manufacturers make updates a painless procedure that backs up everything. This is not the case here.

This is not a huge deal, but for those wanting the upgrade you should probably download AngryBirdsBackup from the market and backup anything else on the phone. Anything stored on the MicroSD card will not be wiped such as photos and such but make sure to backup everything before doing the update. When it boots on Android 2.2 it will be like a brand new device all over again, fun but a process to set up. I don’t want to be too harsh but they should probably include a backup method in their update in the future to make things easy for users. For all the download and update information check out the source below.
