3D Demo on iPhone 4: Video Magic

Posted: 13 Apr 2011 08:13 AM PDT

With the ever-changing world of technology, it was only but a matter of time before we would see 3D coming to our smartphones.

We are starting to see the introduction of 3D technology being brought into mobile market. Some devices already have this new technology like the LG Optimus 3D and who knows we may even see it introduced to the new iPhone 5 when it eventually launches.

New information is reaching us from the guys at IDB, regarding a 3 dimensional tech demo for the iPhone 4, which was created by Laurence Nigay and Jeremie Francone of the research group Engineering Human-Computer Interaction (EHCI) and which, uses the phones front-facing camera.

We have previously reported on this 3D technology created by EHCI in a recent article regarding the iPad 2. By using the front-facing camera of the iPhone 4 or iPad 2 and new head-tracking technology, the engineers are able to access where the user is in relation to the graphic on-screen.

If you are fascinated by this mobile new technology, then why not check out the video below, showing the 3D technology in action. What are your thoughts on the emergence of 3D technology on mobile devices? Why not let us know below.

Android Market Now Has A Sony Ericsson Channel

Posted: 13 Apr 2011 07:30 AM PDT

If you own an Android smartphone and access the Android Market you be faced with the usual set of heading tags such as Games, Apps, and My apps, but if you own a Sony Ericsson Android handset that layout will be different.

Why? Well according to an article over on Engadget by way of the Sony Ericsson Blog, the company has now launched a Sony Ericsson specific channel to the Android Market where apparently users can locate Xperia specific apps.

The new Sony Ericsson channel means that the My apps header has been given the order of the boot in favour of the Sony Ericsson header, so if you are a Sony Ericsson handset user you’ll need to access your menu to gain access to your own apps.

It appears that Sony Ericsson is the first handset manufacturer to slap their own channel on the Android Market, but apparently the change is carrier dependant, so just so you don't get all hot and bothered if you don’t see it, there’s a chance you may not see the switch.

HTC Sensation, Galaxy S 2, iPhone 4 Spec Comparison

Posted: 13 Apr 2011 07:04 AM PDT

As with all smartphone that are heading for the public mobile space they get compared to what other smartphone have to offer, usually in the form of a video, but with the new smartphone from HTC, the HTC Sensation, the specs have been compared without actual video footage.

Thus the guys over at TechRader have compared the HTC Sensation to the iPhone 4 and Samsung Galaxy S 2 in a written article rather than video, actually I prefer spec comparisons done in video form but there you go.

So what are the differences between the three smartphones? Well obviously the main difference is two are Android devices while the other is iOS, both the HTC Sensation and Samsung Galaxy S 2 run Android 2.3 Gingerbread while the iPhone 4 runs iOS 4.3, fairly obvious really.

Processor wise both Android handsets sport a 1.2 GHz Snapdragon while the iPhone 4 has a 1GHz processor. Display wise, the HTC Sensation has a Super LCD while the Samsung Galaxy S 2 has a Super AMOLED Plus display and the iPhone 4 as I’m sure you know has a Retina Display/

Storage wise the Sensation has 1GB, which is expandable, while the Galaxy S 2 and the iPhone 4 has 16GB or 32GB although the Galaxy S 2 offers microSD expansion and the iPhone 4 doesn’t.

Camera wise the iPhone 4 loses out here with its 5 megapixel camera while both Android devices offer an 8megapixel snapper and the Galaxy S 2 can do 1080p while the iPhone does 720p video.

Other areas covered in the comparison are connectivity, memory, weight and dimensions, talk and standby times, which you can of course check out by visiting their website. Which device comes out tops? Well is there any point on having a winner as the iOS faithful will always say the iPhone is better, and likewise the Android faithful, so I’ll leave you to make up your own mind.

Apple iPad 2 Customer Faces Best Buy Bully Tactics

Posted: 13 Apr 2011 06:32 AM PDT

One would have thought that Best Buy’s recent run in with Apple would have taught them a lesson when it comes to selling the Apple iPad 2, but apparently Best Buy has a mind of its own and uses whatever bully boy tactics to make a sale.

According to an article over on Itproportal, a Best Buy customer wrote to Crunch Gear detailing how Best Buy used bullyboy tactics for the customer to be able to purchase the iOS tablet.

Apparently the guy went into a Best Buy store and inquired whether they had an Apple iPad 2 available to which they replied no. On walking round the store the customer saw at least 40 in a lockup area. Naturally the customer asked about them and was informed that they were all sold.

However, a couple of minutes later apparently a manager approached the customer and said he could have one of the Apple tablet as long as he purchase a 109 buck Best Buy protection plan, to which the guy replied that it didn't seem right.

Thus the Best Buy manager said he could always try locating the Apple iPad 2 elsewhere as they can do what they want. The customer purchased it and after visited another store and was told by a different manager that it is not Best Buy policy to force a customer to purchase the Best Buy protection plan just to purchase an iPad.

So basically Best Buy was saying buy the protection plan and you get an iPad 2, if not then no iPad. Thus it would appear that Best Buy isn’t above using bullyboy tactics to secure a sale. So have any of our readers been faced with this predicament and been force to purchase a Best Buy protection plan in order to get the Apple iPad 2?

iPhone 5 Not Coming As Apple Hasn’t Released Roadmap

Posted: 13 Apr 2011 06:04 AM PDT

With all mobile products, suppliers need to be notified as to when a company requires delivery and thus lets component suppliers several weeks if not months ahead, and this goes for Apple gear as well. However recent rumour has it that the latest iOS smartphone from Apple will not see release until later this year or early 2012.

It now appears that that rumour has been corroborated as 9to5 Mac is reporting that Apple hasn’t yet release the iPhone 5 production roadmap to suppliers and this is why production of the next generation iPhone hasn’t started.

Apparently sources have informed DigiTimes that hasn’t delivered the iPhone 5 production roadmap as shipment volumes of the iPhone 4 continue to rise and suppliers aren’t ready to shift production lines to a new device.

Although apparently an article by my colleague Lawrence claims that the latest reports say the iPhone 5 may come in September; having said that if Apple hasn’t delivered the production roadmap for the iPhone 5 it is highly unlikely.

Thus it would appear if true that the iOS faithful will not be seeing the iPhone 5 materialise any time soon. However the report does say that with demand for the iPhone 4 continuing to grow, Apple is likely to ” slightly modify the current version” and launch a new iPhone in traditional timeframe of June/July to maintain “buying momentum,” say sources.

So what do you think, would you purchase a “slightly modified” iPhone 4 if Apple releases one in June or July or will you hold off and just wait until the iPhone 5 does finally see the light of day?

HTC Sensation Coming to T-Mobile And Orange Too

Posted: 13 Apr 2011 05:35 AM PDT

Obviously with HTC officially doing the business with the HTC Sensation at their event yesterday, there’s a fair bit of news hitting the net waves concerning the Android device, which was initially coming to the UK via Vodafone, but others are picking up the device as well.

According to a report over on 3G, Vodafone were followed by Three UK announcing they will offer the device and now both T-Mobile UK and Orange UK have announced they will be offering the Android 2.3 Gingerbread smartphone.

Apparently Vodafone have exclusivity over the HTC Sensation for a period of a single month, meaning that T-Mobile, Orange and Three will all start offering the handset sometime in June; as yet though no word on how much the smartphone will hit your pocket for.

So if you are after the latest Gingerbread handset out of the HTC camp and want it next month you have to go through Vodafone, but if you prefer to wait until June you can get the device from all four operators…which one will you go with?

Apple Gear to be Produced in Brazil in November

Posted: 13 Apr 2011 04:36 AM PDT

Currently Apple gear is produced by Foxconn in China but the word is your next iOS device could well be produced in Brazil as apparently Foxconn is opening up a new manufacturing facility in Brazil to produce Apple gear such as the iPhone and Apple iPad.

According to an article over on 9to5 Mac, and by way of Global Economia, the minister for Science and Technology Mercadante in Brazil has reported that Terry Gou, the founder of Hon Hai Precision, has had a meeting in Beijing with Brazilian president Dilma Roussef.

Apparently a Reuters article notes that Foxconn is considering throwing a bundle of bucks into manufacturing facilities in Brazil to the tune of some $12 billion.

Word is the new Foxconn plant will be situated near San Paulo and would be advantageous to Apple as Brazil offers tax breaks on component imports that encourage final production of products in Brazil.

So there you have it, it would appear that your next iOS device may well be made in Brazil, but will having Apple gear produced in Brazil mean no more log delays with Apple pushing our new iPhone and Apple iPad units?

Posted: 13 Apr 2011 03:39 AM PDT

Now there are many of us waiting for the release of the iPhone 5 and just what it will bring, but latest reports that we may have to wait until September for the launch.

In a report by the guys at Digital Daily, coming to us by way of IDB the unveiling of the iPhone 5 could take place at Apple's annual media event, which takes place in September. Yesterday, we did an article on the rumours surrounding the possible production of the 5th-generation iPhone taking place in September, indicating a possible 2012 release of the smartphone.

We would normally expect Apple to unveil their new generation iPhones at their WWDC event, which take place every June. However, these latest rumours appear to mean that we will have to wait until later this year or even as long as next year.

The possible delay in the release of the iPhone 5 will give us a bit more time to ponder over some of the speculations flying around about features we would like to see on this next generation iPhone, such as some of those revealed in our recent articles like, 3D and NFC Technology.

Angry Birds Sync To Solve Cross Platform Gaming

Posted: 13 Apr 2011 02:25 AM PDT

With most mobile apps, if you own a smartphone and then at some point decide to change platforms obviously you need to re-download all your favourite apps, which can be somewhat of a pain, but if your are a fan of Angry Birds this little problem may not be an issue in the not too distant future, well with the Angry Birds game anyway.

The reason? Well according to an article over on Ubergizmo and by way of Electric Pig, The Appera is reporting that Rovio is to release Angry Birds Sync sometime this summer.

So what is Angry Birds Sync? Well apparently Angry Birds Sync will enable gamers to sync their Angry Birds game across platforms and devices, apparently across Android, Windows, Mac, and iOS platforms.

So it would appear that if you say have an Android smartphone and change that smartphone for another Android device you will be able to sync your Angry Birds game to the new device and continue where you left off.

So what do you think about Angry Birds Sync will it make you happy you can continue to play the game from where you left off when changing your device?

One thing, the Electric Pig article mentions that iOS is “largely responsible for making Angry Birds the success it is today”, do you agree with that claim or not, as I’m fairly sure Android had something to do with it.
