Warning: Skype vulnerability leaves your private information out in the open Posted: 14 Apr 2011 07:30 PM PDT The guys at AndroidPolice have come across a quite serious vulnerability in the Skype for Android app. The hack allows any other application to access a whole lot of personal information like “account balance, full name, date of birth, city/state/country, home phone, office phone, cell phone, email addresses, your webpage, your bio, and more.” That’s a lot! Apparently, Skype forgot to add encryption to the databases that store all this data. Really, Skype, really? Justin from AndroidPolice went ahead and built an app that shows how the vulnerability is exploited. You can download the app here if you want to understand how the Skype app gives out your info like it’s free candy. Skype already responded saying that it’s investigating the issue. You can probably expect the company to push an update tomorrow. Here’s a video on how the hack is achieved. Meanwhile, stay away from downloading shady apps — at least until Skype fixes this. |
4shared Music hits the Android Market, we wonder how long it’ll stay there Posted: 14 Apr 2011 06:38 PM PDT Following 4shared Mobile, the chaps at Russian Internet Solutions (why does that name sound scary?) have also released 4shared Music to the Android Market. The mobile app allows you to:
With the expulsion of Grooveshark from the Android Market, we really have to wonder how long until Google starts kicking out these kind of apps as well. However, you can always download the app straight from the developer — unlike that other phone that starts with “i”. It goes without saying that we do not condone digital piracy of any kind, and you should only use this app for legal purposes. |
Developers get their hands on the HTC Sensation system dump Posted: 14 Apr 2011 06:21 PM PDT If you’re the type who likes to tinker with leaked ROMs, you’ll certainly be excited to hear that an HTC Sensation system dump is now floating around the web. The HTC Sensation system dump is about 580MB and contains all those sweet HTC Sense 3.0 goodies that HTC doesn’t want to share with its older handsets. As you’re reading this, developers are already pondering how exactly they will be able to port the HTC Sensation’s system dump to other HTC handsets. Unfortunately, there are a handful issues (system size and qHD resolution just to name a few) they will need to overcome in order to successfully create a working ROM. It may sound like a daunting task, but we’ve seen some pretty amazing things come out of XDA-Developers over the past few year. For now, we suggest you take a quick peek at the wallpapers (download them all here) which have been ripped from the HTC Sensation. Gallery |
Google: 350,000 Android devices activated every day, 3 billion apps installed so far Posted: 14 Apr 2011 06:03 PM PDT On its earning call today, Google revealed some very interesting statistics about Android and its growth. The first one, more than 3 billion apps have been installed from the Market. A formidable milestone, but even more shocking is how fast Android reached it. It took 20 months for Android to reach 1 billion installed apps, then 5 more months to reach 2 billion, and finally only 2 months to reach 3 billion. If we take that kind of exponential growth and project it into the future, it should only take a few weeks for Android to reach 4 billion installed apps. That’s mind blowing! In comparison, iOS just passed the 10 billion mark — but I fear they won’t hold that lead for long. The second bit of stat, the number of Android activations sits now at 350,000. That’s roughly 10,500,00 devices a month. Every month, the whole population of Portugal gets an Android device. That number keeps growing as we speak, I wouldn’t be surprised if during Google I/O the company says it’s something like 375,000 activations/day. Finally, Jeff Huber — Senior VP Commerce and Local — said during the call that “there are many exciting products and innovation coming along to the Android platform”. Hyping Google I/O much, mister Huber? It’s not like we need any more hyping, we’re already counting down the seconds to May 10th as it is. |
HTC EVO 4G takes a bite out of Gingerbread; leaked Android 2.3.3 build hits the web Posted: 14 Apr 2011 03:24 PM PDT While some of you may still be debating HTC decision to not port HTC Sense 3.0 to their older phones, a leaked Android 2.3.3 test build for the HTC EVO 4G has surfaced on the web. The leaked build initially showed up on 911sniper but has quickly gained a home on XDA-Developers. Even though it's only been a few hours since the leak was discovered, developers have already managed to work some magic and transform it into a bootable and fully functional ROM. Though we've known since this morning that the EVO wouldn't be getting any of the Sense 3.0 features, it's certainly disappointing to see that the new Gingerbread build for the EVO doesn't even feature some of the features found on the HTC Thunderbolt or the HTC Inspire 4G. As of now, the only new feature in HTC Sense that we've been able to spot in the Android 2.3.3 build is the Fast Boot hibernate feature which HTC introduced last fall with the Desire HD and Desire Z. If you have a rooted HTC EVO 4G and want to get a taste of an official Gingerbread ROM for your handset, head on over to XDA-Developers and give it a try. As always, be sure to let us know your thoughts on the new ROM. |
Verizon’s HTC DROID Incredible 2 launch on April 28th? Posted: 14 Apr 2011 02:32 PM PDT It looks like we may finally have a lunch date for Verizon's HTC DROID Incredible 2. A new image indicates that the HTC DROID Incredible 2 will launch "in ALL Channels on April 28, 2011." We're still a bit puzzled as to why Verizon still hasn't even acknowledged that the DROID Incredible is heading to their network. The price of the Incredible 2 is still up in the air, but since it features a 4-inch display and no support for Verizon's 4G LTE network, our guess is that it'll come in right around $200 with a new contract. If you happen to take a quick glance at your calendar, April 28th is exactly two week out from today, so you better start saving up that extra cash! How many of you are looking to trade up to the HTC DROID Incredible 2 from the original DROID Incredible or even the wildly outdated HTC DROID Eris? |
Sprint and T-Mobile get ready to announce some new devices in the coming days Posted: 14 Apr 2011 12:57 PM PDT Both Sprint and T-Mobile are getting things ready to announce some new devices in the coming days. Sprint just sent out an invitation for a press event tomorrow at 11:30 am Pacific time, where they’ll most likely announce the Samsung Replenish. The environment-friendly device will feature a QWERTY-keyboard, a 2.8-inch QVGA display, camera, and Wi-Fi. The phone is made out of recycled materials, for those of you that are into that kind of thing. On T-Mobile’ side, the company will have a little get-together Wednesday of next week at 7PM to announce the Honeycomb-packing G-Slate and LG’s dual-core beast, the T-Mobile G2X. That’s a lot of devices coming down the pike, so make sure you to keep tuned to Android and Me for more info. |
Proudly display your support for boobies with Tweetcaster Pink for Twitter Posted: 14 Apr 2011 12:42 PM PDT Popular third-party Twitter client Tweetcaster has partnered with the Feel your Boobies foundation in a fundraising effort to help support breast cancer awareness. Android users can now purchase a pink special edition of the Tweetcaster Pro application for $10 ($5.01 more than the normal Tweetcaster Pro app). Though it doesn't offer anything more than a pink skin over the standard Tweetcaster Pro app, I think proudly displaying your support for boobies is well worth the extra $5, especially if you were already in the market for a new Twitter application or have been looking for ways to support a good cause. Tweetcaster Pink for Twitter is now available on the Android market for 1.5+ devices. |
Millennial: Android is winning, but iOS grows thanks to Verizon iPhone Posted: 14 Apr 2011 12:24 PM PDT Millennial Media released its monthly mobile report earlier today, and the results are quite interesting. Contrary to what Gartner’s and comScore’s reports showed us last week, this one shows Verizon iPhone having a negative effect on Android’s market share. From February to March, iOS’ ad impressions share grew from 27% to 31%. Meanwhile, Android’s share dropped slightly from 51% to 48%. Way behind iOS, RIM kept chugging along through last month. The once leader of the smartphone world even grew 1%, going from 17% to 18%. At the bottom of the barrel, Windows Phone 7, Symbian and “Other” each commanded a whopping 1% of the market. Even though these reports are not a 100% accurate, they do give us a sense of what’s happening in the smartphone market. While Android probably didn’t really lose 3% of the market, the Verizon iPhone did have an effect on its growth. Did the Verizon iPhone killed or seriously hurt Android like some were hoping for? Not even close. Does Google need to step up its game to fend off the Verizon iPhone menace? Absolutely. Are you guys worried about the Verizon iPhone at all or was this small drop in Android’s market share expected? |
Remote control your PC with PocketCloud, now with Honeycomb support Posted: 14 Apr 2011 10:59 AM PDT There are many remote desktop control apps to choose from the Android Market, but a personal favorite of mine is PocketCloud. The well-featured app just got a handful of more reasons to keep it in your app drawer. The guys at Wyse have added Honeycomb support to its popular app. Aside from the obvious advantages of using a bigger screen on a tablet, the new app also has a redesigned look and performs much better thanks to Honeycomb’s hardware acceleration support. PocketCloud also contains several more features, including:
If you want to give PocketCloud a try you can download the free version here, or if you need more features like Pinch-to-Zoom you can get the pro version here. We’re always glad to see developers adding support for Honeycomb — well done, Wyse. |
