ATRIX 4G Webtop on ANY HDMI Connection Posted: 05 Mar 2011 05:18 AM PST Oh joyous day, we’d hoped this sort of functionality would be coming soon – and like any great innovation, it was already built in to the phone, just waiting for some intrepid developer to uncover it. This is the key to getting the ATRIX 4G’s Webtop app working via any HDMI capable screen, simply by removing the Device ID check from the Webtop Launcher in PortalApp.apk and making the DockProvider/DockService show Webtop as an option whenever your ATRIX 4G is connected via HDMI! This lovely functionality is brought to you by none other than “Fenny,” a smooth dev from over XDA way. Check below for the interactions.
The first thing you’ll need to do, and we remind you of course that all of this is at your own risk, is to Root and Deodex your phone. To do that, head over to designgears’ guide of guides. After that, you’ll need to have ADB set up and plop the following code in after you’ve downloaded the necessary files which are only available via XDA, below the code:
You can find the files needed to execute this process over at the original XDA thread. There you can also find the code needed to clear your Dalvik Cache should you have any troubles. Once you’ve done this fabulous set of actions, let us know how it’s working! If it’s NOT working, be sure to report to Fenny so additional bugs can be debugged. Also, what’s your opinion – should this functionality have been built in to the ATRIX 4G in the first place? If you’ve got the HD dock, do you enjoy it, or do you think it’ve been more convenient to simply be able to connect via HDMI? We’re of the opinion that the dock is nice to have since it does hold the phone upright, but to each his own – and the Laptop Dock should go without saying. [via XDA Developers Forums] ) |
HTC ThunderBolt Already in Stores, Just Not for Sale Yet [INSIDE SOURCE] Posted: 04 Mar 2011 03:45 PM PST So here we’ve got quite an interesting situation – our pals over at SentNation have had a conversation with their Verizon Wireless contact who has not only all but guaranteed a March 10th release date for the HTC ThunderBolt, they’ve noted threats from HTC deciding the fate of advertisements for the phone and possible consequences for Verizon if they did not release the phone soon! In all, the most important thing to take away from the conversation had between this publisher and their Verizon source is that tensions are running high, but it’ll mean a solid release date for everyone who’s been chomping at the bit since the first time they saw the lightening strike.
As our pal from SentNation, Alex, began his conversation, obviously digital and having taken place yesterday in the afternoon, by asking when the ThunderBolt will be released – to which he received the reply “no dice.” Not satisfied with a silly noncommittal answer such as this, Alex pressed on for the greater good of ThunderBolt awaiters everywhere.
If the unlikely situation above is true, it means terrible things for Verizon. Even if they deliver the phone on the 10th, they now owe HTC a set of explanations for why they’ve not delivered this phone that’s very obviously sought after hardcore by the Android community on time – or perhaps that’s the point? Have a peek at our top posts for today, and not that these aren’t just posts posted today, they’re the most visited posts in our entire archive today — The ThunderBolt, this phone being the first 4G LTE phone on Verizon’s powerful network, is sure to be a hit – we’ve held it in our hands and from what we can tell, it’ll have been worth the wait. If you’d like to know everything there is to know about this lovely phone head over to the [HTC ThunderBolt] portal and take a look around. No umbrellas! [via SentNation] ) |
Samsung Galaxy Indulge Promo video with Snoop Dogg & Warren G: Episode 2 Posted: 04 Mar 2011 02:48 PM PST Well, whether you all liked it or not, Samsung and MetroPCS are at it again with Episode 2 of the G-Connection with Snoop Dogg & Warren G video. For all the information on how this got started, and a in-depth look at the all-star cast feel free to check out the first video here. My favorite part of the entire video is that Ted Williams, the man with the “Golden Voice” is back on stage doing what he loves. If somehow you missed that, here’s the original Golden Voice clip.
If you look close throughout the video. There is 4G everywhere, or in this case G G G G. With Mr. Snoop DoGGGG tearing it up with his pimp skillz. You have to laugh where it says Job: Multi-taskin’. I can just see Snoop DoGGGG saying that, taskin’. When it comes down to it, all things aside if you just can’t handle this video, in the end she chooses 4G. Isn’t that what we all want, some 4G LTE speed pimp love on our amazing Android phone. I’d have to say yes. Samsung YP-GB1 Galaxy Player sells 20,000 units in 10 Days Posted: 04 Mar 2011 02:06 PM PST The Samsung Galaxy Player we have been following for a while has finally started selling. Not in numbers like the iPod or anything, but this is the first attempt by Samsung to bring a real rival to that market. I think its a great start. Pre-orders went live back in February, and now things are off to a good start for the Samsung Player.
Samsung's Galaxy Player (YP-GB1) that went on sale in South Korea last month has been going pretty well according to Samsung. They are reporting that they have sold over 20,000 units in the first 10 days. This marks the fastest selling media player by the Korean manufacturer. Pretty good numbers for such a short time. The Galaxy Player is pretty similar in specs to their also very popular Galaxy S Phones that they also reported have sold over 10 Million. The Galaxy Player spec list includes: 4.0″ AMOLED Display, the same 1 Ghz Humminbird Processor, Android 2.2, front and rear cameras, as well as wifi, and bluetooth as expected. Eventually we can expect to see this device in other markets, but for now it is rocking over in South Korea. [via Samsung Hub] ) |
Samsung Stealth V with Verizon 4G LTE hits the FCC [Pics] Posted: 04 Mar 2011 01:31 PM PST Back when we first told you about the Samsung Stealth V details were very scant other than it was a Samsung phone that actually had Android 2.2 (a first back at CES) and even now Galaxy S phones are still very slowly getting 2.2 FroYo. Today we have a little more information about the Stealth V, a 4G Verizon phone from Samsung.
If you’re looking for a few more details about the device. It features a sweet 4.3″ Super-AMOLED Display powered by Samsung’s Dual Core Orion Processor we told you about here, 8MP camera with flash capable of 1080p video, HDMI out to display that 1080p, as well as Micro USB, and a 2MP front facing camera. The device was running Android 2.2 back at CES and should hopefully launch with Gingerbread. The FCC filing today makes us hopeful that we will see this sooner than the “Summer 2011″ launch we heard at CES. Maybe Samsung see’s an opening with the Thunderbolt being delayed over and over. The Stealth V just might be the first 4G Verizon phone after all. [via Wireless Goodness] ) |
Is AT&T capping upload speeds on 4G phones? Posted: 04 Mar 2011 01:21 PM PST There’s a movement of angry Atrix fans who think that AT&T is capping upload speeds dramatically on the Atrix 4G. Comparing the new Motorola handset, users can see by using apps like SpeedTest that the Atrix 4G is not only uploading data slower than the iPhone on the same network (to the tune of 4-10 times slower) but is also dropping calls more often (a shock considering the iPhone 4′s penchant at reception issues). Users of both phones pay the same cost in data rates, but the Atrix 4G is being clocked by users at uploading no faster than 300 kpbs. Does the evidence show that AT&T is capping upload speeds?
It would seem so. And users are mad as hell and they aren’t taking it for the next two years. They’ve started a petition over at Groubal.com to get MaBell’s attention. Have you had issues with uploading speeds on the Atrix? You can follow the action on Twitter.com at @ATTFAIL and over at Facebook as well. [via Groubal] ) |
Atrix 4G price plummets on Amazon Posted: 04 Mar 2011 12:57 PM PST Amazon is really pushing the Atrix 4G for AT&T, dropping the price another twenty bucks to $129.99 with a 2-year contract through MaBell. The 4G Smartphone, which is powerful enough to double as a laptop with the optional dock, is listed at AT&Ts website for $199 subsidized. So, the online retailer seems to have an inside track on so much Atrix inventory that it can undercut even their own suppliers and still swing a profit? Or, more likely they anticipate high demand for users to want the laptop option but are experiencing some sticker shock on the $500 price, thereby giving them motivation to buy both and stay under $700. More sedentary users can use the optional HD Multimedia Dock for $90 plus free shipping. Great if you love movies.
The Atrix gets it’s power from it’s dual-core 1Ghz processor running Android 2.2 (Froyo). With that kind of speed, it can go neck and neck with laptops and netbooks that were popular with the traveling set of the business world. The optional dock comes with a dock in the back, an 11.6 inch screen, and full QWERTY keyboard. The internal rechargable battery offers up to 8 hours of use. Should users wish to purchase the Atrix without subsidy, the price is $699. Add to the cost of the laptop dock and you’re looking at a 1Ghz dual core computer for $1200. So it’s easy to see the allure of suffering with AT&T for a short period of time, especially when Amazon is offering such a great deal on it. [via UnWired View] |
HTC Thunderbolt Verizon In-Store Pamphlet boasting 4G speeds Posted: 04 Mar 2011 12:21 PM PST HTC Thunderbolt: It’s not your dream phone, it’s the one after that. As if my last story about the Thunderbolt wasn’t enough, We now have news of some In-Store Verizon pamphlets showing a little more details about the device. Our friends over at Phandroid have got some pictures of the pamphlet Verizon will be using to push the launch of the device. As you look through the pages it boasts some good information.
Verizon outlines a few details regarding the extreme speeds of Verizon’s 4G LTE Network, Skype video chat working seamless with PC users, and mobile hotspot to name a few. If you read my link at the beginning you’ll see the price is still expected to be $299, unless the in-store pictures at Best Buy prove to be accurate. We still don’t know for sure when this device will make it to the masses. So hold tight and be ready to buy some of that 4G speed when it finally gets released. [via Phandroid] ) |
Havok Game Tools will make for more Xperia Play games Posted: 04 Mar 2011 12:03 PM PST The Game Developers Conference this week brought some good news for Sony Xperia Play fans as the new Havok Game Tools, optimized for the Xperia Play, was previewed. Game Developers can program to move via the arrow pads or the touchpad, and can interact with a game via the Xperia’s touch screen. The Havoc behavior engine allows for smoother character interaction in the game as well. Developers will also be able to perform mesh generation and path-finding with real time playback. The Havok Cloth creates realistic character design with believable, physically based motion to character garments. While Havoc Destruction gives developers complete control of destructible events within the game and lessens rendering testing of those objects through Havoc Physics. This is certainly great news for developers who are already using Havoc to develop more than 270 games in the marketplace. The new tools mean greater detail and realism, richer, more cinematic experiences, and complete integration all the way up to Android Honeycomb. |
HTC Thunderbolt still showing as $299 in Best Buy Ads Posted: 04 Mar 2011 12:03 PM PST It looks as if Best Buy has no plans to stop printing ads featuring the HTC Thunderbolt at $299. It has been in ads more than a few times already. Not to mention the price has been leaked at Best Buy more than once. Yet again we have another sighting of the Thunderbolt.
This all comes from Best Buy, but we also have pictures from in-store stands showing the Thunderbolt for $249 on contract also. Until it officially comes out. I guess we wont know what the price really will be set at. If you haven’t seen enough of the ThunderBolt yet, check out this T-Bolt Rooftop Commercial, and again here is our T-Bolt Hands-On. We will be sure to update if we find out any other solid details on pricing. Note: It’s listed as $299 in the ads, yet $249 in store. I don’t think Best Buy stores know any more than we do. HTC Flyer Hands-On and Palm rejection test [Video] Posted: 04 Mar 2011 11:41 AM PST As 2011 marches on we are all slowly learning that this really will be “The Year for Tablets.” With every manufacturer you can think of throwing out an Android tablet, and don’t forget about oh, the iPad 2. With everyone in the tablet game worried they might not be up to par. Like Samsung feeling the 10.1 Tab is inadequate compared to the iPad 2. HTC is just cruising along at their own speed. Launching what we all know as the HTC Flyer. Today we have a video showing a little hands on, and a demo of the Palm-Rejection in action, which allows use of a pen or stylus.
The HTC Flyer will allow users to use a pen for input, also known as a stylus. The issue with this is when your palm touches the capacitive screen while trying to write it throws off the points of contact and it doesn’t work. HTC has introduced Palm-rejection. It is basically the ability of a touchscreen device to ignore the touch of a hand leaning on the screen while a pen or stylus is being used. Officially known as vectoring. After watching the video, it looks as if the Flyer’s system works pretty good. Hopefully we will get to see more of the Flyer in action soon. Check out the video below and decide for yourself. Android Malware Apps get official attention … Posted: 04 Mar 2011 11:40 AM PST Recently there’s been some concern about malware in the Android Marketplace. Hackers have been repackaging legitimate Android applications with spyware embedded and resubmitting them, causing mobile devices to be infected with malware after download. Here’s some official words from Linda Liu, Global Marketing Director of the mobile security firm NetQin, on the steps Google is taking to combat the trend:
Liu goes on to remind users that they should always be cautious about downloading apps to their phone and only rely on trusted sources or stores and marketplaces with solid reputations. Users should also always check reviews, ratings and developer information before downloaded. But Liu isn’t giving the app stores and carriers a free pass either:
In the end, however, users are the last line of defense, and the devil is in the details. Users can get more information from the attached press release, and stay tuned here at Android Community as we’re following the situation closely and will advise of developments as they occur. ) |
