Google building Facial Recognition app to identify people by their face

Posted: 31 Mar 2011 10:52 AM PDT

It looks like Google is at it again with another innovative idea. According to the CNN piece on it, it seems some are worried about privacy issues regarding this app from the search and ad giant. Google apparently has a mobile app that is currently under way that will use facial recognition software to identify people by their faces. The kicker here that has them worried is the main function. You snap a photo of someones face and the app will use it to access their personal information. From email and phone number, to possibly even pictures and their address.

Obviously there is a lot more to how it works than that. Google mentioned there will be Profiles and that is actually what the software will draw from the face, a profile. Users will be able to “allow” or “deny” others access to their profile so there is some privacy controls that are being looked at and deeply integrated. I’d expect there to be lots of privacy settings included or else this could get hairy. I could see a few people up in arms over that.

For now there isn’t a lot of information on what Google plans to do, or how to release and market this mobile application. We don’t have much to go on regarding the privacy aspect and what Google has in mind regarding that. I’m sure we will here more as this gets closer to a release. Check out the source below for a more in-depth read as they have the official interview.

Fruit Ninja for Android free today on Amazon Appstore

Posted: 31 Mar 2011 10:14 AM PDT

For those that thought the Amazon free app a day would just be a gimmick and nothing good would come from it. I think you’ve been shown otherwise since the launch of the appstore. This little trick to get attention seems to be working on me at least. For those that didn’t know, Amazon has released an Appstore for Android. They’ve gave away exclusive games like Angry Birds Rio, Angry Birds Seasons, and more away for free. I like it.

As I keep seeing Amazon release great games and apps for the free app of the day, I’m starting to realize that I need to bookmark the page that posts it everyday. I wouldn’t want to miss a great deal like I did yesterday. They had Soundhound Infinity free, an app like Shazam only better. I would have loved to see and get that for free, but I missed it. That wont be happening again. Today they bring you the extremely popular on both Android and iOS game called Fruit Ninja, if you’ve not played this on your smartphone yet, you might be living under a rock.

Fruit Ninja is a very simple game, you slash fruit with your fingers and it gets really exciting and hard. Some enjoy it more than Angry Birds. It is very popular. I’m thinking most of you know of it already so I’ll just skip right to the link. Get Fruit Ninja now for FREE at the Amazon Appstore.

Samsung Gem Officially Announced

Posted: 31 Mar 2011 09:58 AM PDT

Today we’ve been sent some exciting news for those of you who love diamond shapes as home keys – that’s right! It’s the Samsung Gem, announced by Samsung Mobile and U.S. Cellular today, set to be released in stores and online starting on April 1st. This phone will feature a 3.2-inch touchscreen with “advanced anti-scratch, anti-smudge and anti-reflective protective glass.” Sounds fancy! Samsung Gem carries Android 2.2 Froyo out of the gate, with no word on updates to Gingerbread.

That gem, look at it! There’s a gem on the front that acts as a simple physical Home button, and another that appears to be the exact same size that’ll act as shield for your camera lens – 3.2-megapixels, by the way. This phone will definitely be coming up in competition with LG’s Optimus line, specifically the LG Optimus U, which is also carried by U.S. Cellular, and the LG Optimus V, the same hardware carried by Virgin Mobile. Will its fashionably unique look beat out its partners?

In the spec sheet we’ve got they’ve listed that the device comes with support for a host of audio types, another bag of Bluetooth profiles supported, and the words “Location Based Services” listed twice, which makes us feel like there’s some GPS action going on in there. Inside you’ll also find 124MB memory, a slot supporting up to 16GB microSD card, and a total weight of 3.85 ounces. Battery is a 1500mAh, which could definitely give you more than a few hours of work time on this little man, and the total dimensions are 4.48" x 2.18" x 0.48".

Take a peek at the full press release below:

Gameloft Announces Xperia Play Exclusive game BackStab [video]

Posted: 31 Mar 2011 09:38 AM PDT

Gameloft has just announced a new and exciting game that will be coming to Android, and later iOS. The Xperia Play exclusive will be available for Play owners only for the first month or so according to sources, then will be released for the rest of the Android community so they can all wish they had the controls the Xperia Play has. This is a very polished game with a little mix of action and adventure. It is sure to please many of you Thumb gamers.

The game, titled BackStab is set on an 18th century Caribbean island and weaves an epic tale of revenge. Hero Henry Blake has been falsely accused of treason and will go to all means to seek vengeance on his British jailers. This game features some new and exciting things such as an open 3D environment for you to wander as much as you’d like, all kinds of couter-attack moves, and dynamic combat. It is sure to make a big splash in the gaming waters.

Check out the video below for a more in depth look at what we will be getting, as well as the actual game play pictures. The comments on the video sure made me laugh, my favorite one being Assassins Creed: Pirates of the Caribbean whoever thought up that should get a cookie. The game looks to have a little from both of those titles just mentioned, yes that is a good thing so I expect this to be a fun and engaging game. Will you be getting BackStab, Even if you don’t have a Play? Tell us below in the comments. Also feel free to read here for info on other upcoming Xperia Play games.

Playstation Emulator PSX4Droid Pulled from Android Market

Posted: 31 Mar 2011 09:32 AM PDT

Is Xperia PLAY to blame? That’s what developer ZodTTD believes, and with recent events surrounding groups like Twitter, for example, we’s mildly suspicious as well. If you’re unaware, several massively popular 3rd party Twitter clients were pulled just a few weeks ago right around the same time Twitter released their very own brand new official app – this new version was and is pretty nice, but Google’s pull of the other versions so close to Twitter’s official app was just too odd not to take note of. Is a similar sort of situation unfolding here with Sony Ericsson and the Xperia PLAY? Such a twisted web we weave.

What developer of this quite popular Playstation emulator PSX4Droid is reporting is that Google has told them that they’ve made violations to the official Android Market content policy list, a list that shan’t be besmirched! Of course there are still other Playstation emulator apps out there, and they’re still in business, but we’ll be keeping a close eye to see if they’re next on the chopping block.

In other news, there’s quite a few fabulous games coming out with the Xperia PLAY that you’d not otherwise be able to play on Playstation, one of them by the name of Backstab! It may look like a pirate game, but it’s not! Then there’s a big fat list of also completely awesome games that’ll be coming out with optimized versions at the launch of the device. Get pumped up!

CyanogenMod 7 is at it again with RC4 now available

Posted: 31 Mar 2011 08:56 AM PDT

If you haven’t seen all the twitter posts over the last few days then you probably don’t know that the CM team has just released the RC4 of the ever so popular CyanogenMod. Hopefully you are all aware of what CyanogenMod is by now. If you don’t you should head over to their site posted above and check it out if you love Android.

Usually main releases aren’t this close, having just dropped RC3 somewhat recently this came as a little surprise. From what I have read a large part of the RC4 roll-out was to finalize things before a stable build gets released for all the devices, and because the NOOKcolor got some exciting new updates by the CM team. The amazing developers we know from CM have added some hardware acceleration, and a few other things to the Barnes & Noble e-reader making it have some extremely smooth video playback, now it’s like a real tablet.

For everyone else that is excited to flash the latest and greatest CM7 on their device head over to the download mirrors portal now and find your select devices and get going. I know my three already have CM7 RC4 flashed. (Happy Face) that is how we do it. As always, use caution when flashing. I like to have a Nandroid backup, a titanium backup of all app data, as well as my SD card saved to my PC just to be safe. It has saved me more than once. Enjoy your CM7!

ASUS Eee Pad Transformer Appears at Best Buy for $400

Posted: 31 Mar 2011 08:13 AM PDT

Our main fellow over in England, Chris Davies of SlashGear, had a close look at the ASUS Eee Pad Transformer in its current state yesterday, letting us know that it’s totally cold blooded! Included in his report were prices and release dates for the tablet and its keyboard counterpart, but missing were the dates and money signs for our USA best technological friend, Best Buy. All that’s changed now – or at least the dollar bit has, as Best Buy’s reporting on their release (minus the date bit) and what you’ll be spending on this fabulous Honeycomb tablet.

Best Buy has the ASUS Eee Pad Transformer listed at a mere $400, sound inexpensive enough for you for a 10.1″ Android 3.0 Honeycomb tablet? This device is listed, but not available yet for sale or for pre-order. All that’s listed is a sign that says “coming soon” and a few empty links. They’ve also got details and specs, but heck, let’s just list them here while we’re at it: you’ll be working with a 10.1″ IPS display at 1280 x 800 pixel resolution topped with pure Gorilla Glass. Inside you’ll find the excellent NVIDIA Tegra 2 processor, 1GB of RAM, and 16GB flash storage.

On the front of this tablet there’s a 1.2-megapixel webcam, 2x USB 2.0 along the sides, Bluetooth 2.1 inside, and it’ll be connecting along 802.11 b/g/n Wifi. This unit weighs 2.2-lbs and has a thickness of .5-inches. If you’d like to get a closer look, head on over to our write-up of Chris Davies’ Hands-On with the ASUS Eee Pad Transformer – plus press release!

Opera Mini Spreads to Verizon Feature Phones, Androids Scorn

Posted: 31 Mar 2011 06:34 AM PDT

Today Verizon has announced that a set of feature phone including LG enV2™, LG enV®3,  LG enV® TOUCH, Samsung Alias™ 2, Casio® G'zOne Ravine™ and Casio® G'zOne Rock™ will have Opera Mini available for web browsing starting immediately. This is an odd move for Verizon as feature phones aren’t exactly at the hight of popularity right this very moment, but perhaps a push to slightly nicer apps like Opera Mini on these inexpensive handsets will encourage upgrades to the vastly engaging world of Android.

Opera Mini will coming preloaded later this year as the primary browser on select devices, and can be downloaded by customers now via their Media Center / Get It Now or from Verizon Wireless’ online media store. Then of course those customers who have phones powerful enough to feature the Android Marketplace can download Opera Mini from there immediately.

The only concern we’ve got with this app is the complaints it’s been getting as of late in the market’s review section. Seems to be a lot of reports on a big black screen coming up often. Also we’re unable to run Sun Spider benchmark system as Opera Mini sits stuck at “math-spectral-norm.” Drives me nuts! For Feature Phones though, assuming no black screens or errors in any way, it’s going to be a vast improvement over what they’ve currently got in place. Excellent move, Verizon.

The images you see in this gallery were shot with an HTC ThunderBolt – definitely not a Feature Phone (and PS, it seems to be working without error from here) -

OPERA MINI APP BRINGS ENHANCED WEB BROWSING EXPERIENCE TO VERIZON WIRELESS FEATURE PHONES

Application Enables Desktop-like Web Browsing, Including Access to Expanded Set of Internet Sites on Feature Phones

BASKING RIDGE, N.J., and SAN MATEO, Calif. – Verizon Wireless announced today that Opera Mini, the ground-breaking mobile browser by Opera Software, is available on select Feature phones, including LG enV2™, LG enV®3, LG enV® TOUCH, Samsung Alias™ 2, Casio® G'zOne Ravine™ and Casio® G'zOne Rock™, with additional devices to be added soon. Opera Mini offers an enhanced user experience for Web browsing – bringing PC-like Web browsing to select Verizon Wireless feature phones. Using the Opera Mini app, and its unique compression technology, Web pages are delivered to the phones more quickly.

"Getting Opera Mini on the Verizon Wireless network is a big milestone, as we are able to reach Verizon Wireless' vast customer base," said Lars Boilesen, chief executive officer, Opera Software. "We are happy that Verizon Wireless customers will now have access to a superior browser and, in the future, we will be launching more devices with Opera Mini preinstalled."

Verizon Wireless offers Content Filters that let parents manage a safe browsing experience for their children. For more information on Content Filters, visit www.verizonwireless.com/usagecontrols.

Opera Mini, currently available on six devices, will come preloaded later this year as the primary browser on select devices. Customers with feature phones can find the app in the Media Center/Get It Now® or can download it from Verizon Wireless online media store. Customers with Android™ devices can also download the app from Android Market™. There is no subscription fee to access the Opera Mini browser, but data and usage charges may apply during download and use of the application.

HTC announces April 12 press event

Posted: 31 Mar 2011 06:13 AM PDT

HTC has announced a UK press event on April 12, where it promises to show “what’s next” in its range. Although HTC’s invite is short on clues, the likeliest candidates for an unveil are the new HTC Pyramid dual-core smartphone, or the European version of the HTC EVO 3D which was officially announced for Sprint last week.

However, they’re not the only devices HTC has been rumored to be preparing. The company is also expected to announce two further Android tablets, this time running 3.0 Honeycomb on larger displays than that of the HTC Flyer.

Of course, it could also be a new Windows Phone device, though rumors around Microsoft’s OS have been a lot quieter than on the Android front. Let us know your predictions in the comments, and we’ll be bringing back all the news from April 12!

Hacktivist app fakes out and then embarrasses pirates

Posted: 31 Mar 2011 06:12 AM PDT

Generally, I don't think Trojans and other things that can compromise your phone are funny. This one however is amusing and it’s called Android.walkinwat. The app is on file sharing sites where pirates frequently download apps without paying for them.

It poses as the Walk and Text app that is really on the market. When the pirate installs the app it grabs some details from the phone and then gives the user a message telling them they were busted pirating an app.

The app then takes the numbers from the pirates contact book and sends out the text you see above. I guess they think embarrassing people is a good way to get them to stop pirating.

Tap Tap Revenge 4 hits Android Market

Posted: 31 Mar 2011 05:13 AM PDT

We briefly mentioned yesterday when we talked about in-app billing going live on Android that Tap Tap Revenge 4 would be featuring in-app billing. What we didn't mention at the time was that Tap Tap Revenge 4 was hitting the Android Market as a free game the same day.

This is the first time that the game has been offered on Android and it has been popular on other platforms like the iPhone for years. The game has some popular music to play along to including tracks by Katy Perry, Nicki Minaj, Metallica, Lady Gaga, Justin Bieber, Bruno Mars, Pitbull, Linkin Park, Far East Movement, Selena Gomez, Green Day, Cee Lo Green, Kid Cudi, Rihanna, My Chemical Romance and Florence + The Machine. Some songs are available as in-app purchases.

The game is Android optimized and has lots of free tracks. The free tracks include some from indie bands and others. The game also allows the player to like a track and then challenge others to beat their score on liked tracks.

HTC offers official HTC Flyer video on YouTube

Posted: 31 Mar 2011 04:45 AM PDT

We have talked about the HTC Flyer tablet and even offered up our own hands on video and images of the thing in action. What we haven’t seen so far is much in the way of official video and content from HTC about the tablet, but that has now changed. HTC has put the official Flyer tablet advert on YouTube.

The video goes through the main features of the Flyer and spends quite a bit of time looking at the Sense and the cool stylus pen that allows the user to write on any content that appears on the screen. That pen will also allow for some interesting drawing action for the roving artist or doodler.

We already knew the specs of the tablet with its 7-inchs screen and 1024 x 600 resolution. It has a 1.14GHz single core CPU inside, HSPA+ modem, and a 4000mAh battery. It also has duel cameras for video conferencing and photo taking. The tablet runs Android 2.4 and has lots of other features. Check out the video below.

Samsung Galaxy S Plus i9001 with overclocked CPU in pipeline [Update: Confirmed!]

Posted: 31 Mar 2011 02:43 AM PDT

Samsung may have the Galaxy S II on the way to keep its flagship spot occupied, but according to the latest rumors there’ll also be a replacement to the original single-core Galaxy S as well. Connected insider Eldar Murtazin has heard that Samsung is readying the Galaxy S i9001, an overclocked version of the original device.

The Galaxy S i9001′s single-core chip will apparently be running at 1.4GHz, rather than the 1GHz it originally offered. That, Murtazin suggests, will make the i9001 Samsung’s rival to the HTC Pyramid, though we’re expecting the HTC handset to be dual-core.

Exact release dates are unknown, and of course none of this is official. Still, we wouldn’t be surprised if Samsung milked the Galaxy S series’ success a little longer, just as it has done with the recent 4G version.

Update: Samsung Russia has confirmed the Galaxy S Plus i9001, with a 4-inch Super AMOLED display, Android 2.3 Gingerbread, TouchWiz 3.0, 8GB of internal memory, HD video recording, a 1.4GHz processor and HD video recording/playback. It will arrive in Russia at the end of April, priced at 23,990 rubles ($844). [Thanks Kunal!]

Google adds “non-fragmentation clauses” to Android OEM agreements to boost OS consistency

Posted: 31 Mar 2011 02:33 AM PDT

Google has reportedly been tightening its approach to Android modification by OEMs, inserting new “non-fragmentation clauses” into contracts and even attempting to delay devices which replace its own search with that of Bing. According to BusinessWeek‘s exec sources at LG, Toshiba, Samsung, Facebook and others, Google is now insisting that all modifications be signed off by Andy Rubin, with the threat of delayed access to future code hanging over their heads.

The sources suggest that OS modifications, new UIs, or even partnerships with other companies are all coming under Google’s microscope, especially if they concern search or navigation. Rubin claims the standard Android agreement with manufacturers has always contained such clauses, and John Lagerling, director of global Android partnerships at Google, says it’s a matter of quality control and working toward a “common denominator”; however, the reports suggest the policies have recently been tightened.

As a result, several companies have supposedly complained to the US Department of Justice. This week, Microsoft announced it will be requesting the European Union begin an antitrust investigation into Google over allegations it is acting in a way that unfairly prevents competition. More information on that here.

Sony Ericsson confirms XPERIA Play delays in UK

Posted: 31 Mar 2011 02:10 AM PDT

The Sony Ericsson XPERIA Play has encountered shipping delays and may miss its April 1 UK release at some retailers and on some carriers, the company has confirmed. Sony Ericsson has blamed “a freight issue” for the delay, which prompted Vodafone to contact pre-order customers and warn them their handsets wouldn’t be arriving tomorrow as promised.

According to our sources, the delay is “days rather than weeks” but will still mean XPERIA Play availability is tight. Sony Ericsson says some retailers will indeed have stock tomorrow, but there’s no word on which.

O2 has already delayed its own launch of the handset, having identified firmware bugs, though we’re told that’s a completely separate issue from the shipping problem.

Sony Ericsson Statement:

We can confirm that the Xperia™ PLAY handsets are still planned to launch in the UK for 1st April, as originally communicated. However, as of today, we have experienced a freight issue that may impact the number of Xperia™ PLAYs arriving at some retail outlets. This said, consumers can purchase Xperia™ PLAY as of April 1st at a number of stores across the UK.

Vodafone UK Statement:

Sony Ericsson has advised us that it will not be able to supply the Sony Ericsson Xperia Play and Arc devices to meet their original launch date of 1 April. Unfortunately, this means there will be a small delay before pre-order customers receive their orders and the device is made available for sale in our shops.

We’re working closely with Sony Ericsson to ensure our customers’ phones are delivered as soon as possible and we will contact people directly with specific timescales when we know more.

We appreciate this is disappointing and are doing our very best to resolve this as quickly as possible.

Dell plans Stage sync update for Streak, Streak 7 and PCs

Posted: 31 Mar 2011 02:01 AM PDT

Right now, Dell’s Stage software is a vaguely useful UI and app suite for the company’s Streak and Streak 7 Android tablets, along with Dell’s notebooks and desktops. In the future, however, it will be a multi-platform synchronization tool, automatically transferring content between the smartphones and PCs.

Talking to Android Community at a Streak 7 pre-briefing, Dell revealed that the Stage roadmap includes intelligent sync functionality which will automatically move new photos, videos and other content from your smartphone to your PC when you enter the home network. Remote access tools and streaming are also envisaged.

Those without Dell computers won’t be left out in the cold, however. Dell is planning to release a version of Stage for other PCs, though it will be functionally limited in comparison to the original. Still, enough to wirelessly sync. Unfortunately, Dell’s Windows Phone range won’t get included into the syncing fold, at least not initially. The company told us it was looking at the possibility, but right now Microsoft’s limitations on OS modification mean it’s not allowed.

Dell Streak 7 gets priced & dated for UK launch

Posted: 31 Mar 2011 02:00 AM PDT

Dell has confirmed UK pricing and availability for the Dell Streak 7, the 7-inch Tegra 2 based Android tablet currently only available on T-Mobile USA. The Streak 7 will be priced from £299 (including VAT and delivery) when it goes on sale via Dell’s online store at the end of April 2011.

Your money gets you an unlocked 3G radio, WiFi, a 1GHz dual-core processor and Android 2.2 Froyo with Dell’s custom Stage UI software. Our main criticism of the Streak 7 is the display resolution; as Ben Bajarin found back when he reviewed the tablet in February, the WVGA panel falls short of the 1024 x 600 rivals like Samsung offer.

However, the lower-res display does enable Dell to bring the Streak 7 in at under the £300 mark, around £100 less than a Galaxy Tab 3G is currently going for (or what you’d pay for a WiFi-only Galaxy Tab).

Verizon 2011 Roadmap Leaks, Droid Charge, Xperia PLAY, Droid Incredible 2, Droid X 2, and Samsung Galaxy S II

Posted: 30 Mar 2011 03:12 PM PDT

Every once in a good while something lovely like this comes along and lets us know when basically everything in the world will be coming out. There’s been a list of devices released that was more than likely sent out to Verizon stores with the intent being that they’d know in advance what to prep their employees for, spreading info sheets according to when each device will be released. What we’ve got here is a wave of Android, to be sure. Everything your robotic heart could possibly desire, coming soon!

First, there’s the Casio Commando – an Android phone with ruggedness so very rugged that it was shown off at CTIA and apparently everyone was intimidated away from taking photos of it. Wild! Then there’s the Samsung Charge (aka Samsung Stealth aka Droid Charge) which will be out on the 7th of April – this phone will be 4G! But that’s no matter, basically everything will be “4G” from here on out.

Then there’s one of the big guns: Sony Ericsson Xperia PLAY, the original Gingerbread hero phone, to be released right on schedule, 7 days after the Charge and Commando, that putting it right on April 14th. Following this there’s a Global capable Android phone by the name of HTC Incredible 2, this on the 28th of April.

Then into May – it’s all Android! But several of these phones aren’t locked down as specific as we’d love. First there’s the LG Revolution on the 5th of May, then a triple threat – three of the most amazing phones you’ll ever lay eyeballs on. Motorola Bionic, Motorola Droid X2, and Samsung Galaxy S II (aka Samsung Galaxy 2.) These last three have no specifics, just May.

Sounds good to us!

Hot Games for Xperia PLAY Launch Rundown

Posted: 30 Mar 2011 02:38 PM PDT

We were reeling when we saw the big fat list of Xperia PLAY optimized games that CNET Asia had prepared a couple of days ago. We were so excited, in fact, that our initial browsing of said list yielded only one overwhelming notion: there aren’t that many new things here. How heart-wrenching! Then we got wise. There are some gems in there, starting with the second in a series of Dungeon Defenders.

Take a peek here at a gameplay video of this “Second Wave” version of Dungeon Defenders, and have a freakout party when you see how smooth and excellent it appears to be:

Next have a look at Bruce Lee, a game which, if you’ve never seen it before, has movements based on an official Bruce Lee student’s digitally mapped body whilst fighting. Neato:

Then there’s Star Battalion, a game not unlike StarFox 64 (aka the greatest strarfighter game ever created) that’ll make full use of your controls (allowing you to use either sets of pads), and will allow you to play multiplayer over Wifi.

For racing there’s Asphault 6: Adrenaline, an HD graphics game that’ll also allow you to play multiplayer, this one with tracks all around the world, “from LA to Tokyo” – hot speed!

Finally, there’s Splinter Cell Conviction – an amazing first-person shooter game you may already be familiar with if you’ve been following the Splinter Cell series on other platforms. This final video shows off Splinter Cell as well as 9 other games from Gameloft:

Then here’s the big list of other games that we’re aware of, all of them optimized for Xperia PLAY officially at the launch, these coming to you straight from CNET Asia:

Cisco Cius 7-inch Android Tablet Appears in FCC

Posted: 30 Mar 2011 01:50 PM PDT

It’s been MONTHS since we heard a single peep about this oncoming Android tablet, the last time being October of 2010, it then displaying itself a s webconferencing-centric slate that’ll cost “under $1,000.” Not very exciting! Cius insisted then that the tablet was not meant to go into competition with other tablets, instead positioning itself as a “first-of-its- kind mobile collaboration device." Now it’s much MUCH closer to being real having just shown up in the FCC.

From the filing we can decipher a few facts such as its connectedness: 802.11 a/b/g/n WiFi as well as Bluetooth, but no mention of any 3G or 4G speeds of any kind. Will this conferencing device be Wifi-only? If it’s meant to be closer to a desktop than it is to a phone, then this falls right in line with its intent.

This filing was submitted by tablet maker OpenPeak, a group we last heard about creating OpenTablet 10. This listing from the FCC has confidential filings that will be released on June 27, 2011. Generally this means that the tablet will be released before the date given, so we’re looking at a summer release. Could be neat!
