HTC Desire HD Pops Up in Two 18-second Ads Posted: 03 Mar 2011 11:03 AM PST For those of you rolling hard with the HTC Inspire 4G, you know the glory of the undeniably gigantic screen and smoothness of the case in your hands. Were you aware that there’s another phone out there that’s essentially exactly the same as yours, with a different name? The HTC Desire HD runs on a different network (Telus,) and has different radio software than the Inspire 4G, but for the most part, save for a few odd issues that have arisen because of the UK/USA bits of insides. What we’ve got here is a couple of commercials that were released today, both of them for the Desire HD, but work just as well for those looking for some more pazazz in their Inspire 4G video spots.
These ads tout as amazing a picture on your phone as you have “at home” as well as a “helloooo” experience with again, the gigantic screen. If you’d like to get more information on this phone from our USA perspective, simply hit the big HTC Inspire 4G portal and blast off! You’ll find detailed photos, video, hands-on treatment, and a full review along with a plethora of odd news bits. Enjoy! Have yourself a wonderful time in this mini-gallery too if you’re just in to hanging out in this post instead of exploring the post suite: ) |
Qualcomm and Gameloft Partner up to better Android Gaming Posted: 03 Mar 2011 10:59 AM PST Tuesday morning Qualcomm released a statement that they will be entering into a strategic relationship with Gameloft for HD Gaming. What this means is Qualcomm and Gameloft are now partnering up to help bring some heavy optimizations and enhancements to the Snapdragon chipsets to better perform with HD games. Not to say that they don’t perform well already, but this comes fresh off the news that Nvidia is launching the site called Tegra Zone, where they show off a gallery of games and apps that will perform at best running a Tegra 2 CPU.
This news goes to show that Qualcomm aims to please with their next generation mobile CPU’s and that they plan to have some great games in collaboration with Gameloft to go with them. In the press release they specifically mentioned the upcoming MSM8x55 and the dual-core MSM8x60 as types of processors that they will be developing for. Check below for the full press release.

HTC ChaCha Considers an Additional Cha for ChaChaCha Posted: 03 Mar 2011 10:44 AM PST Oh my goodness this is just silly. Apparently, according to HTC’s spain Twitter account, they’ll be marketing the HTC ChaCha as the HTC ChaChaCha. There are several reasons why this could be happening. The first and most obvious reason is that the HTC ChaCha is currently facing litigation from the company who feels that HTC’s choice of the name ChaCha infringes on their company name which also happens to be none other than the same set of letters and capitalization: ChaCha. Will adding another Cha appease them?
Another reason, one much less likely we think, but possible nonetheless, is the direct translation of ChaCha into English from Spanish. ChaCha means nanny, a term that HTC might be wanting to avoid if they’d like to steer clear of being called a Big Brother company with their physical Facebook button near the bottom edge of this lovely little device. The third reason is, we think, the best, it being the idea that ChaCha just wasn’t enough of a dance for HTC to be doing, so they added a move to do enough swinging to appease the hardcore dancefloor fiends of Barcelona. And what’s this, you’ve never seen the ChaCha up close? We just happen to have some detailed posts having directly to do with this tiny dancer. First we’ve got a big analyzation post called Why These Two Android Phones will Change Everything. Next there’s an HTC ChaCha hands-on post with video as well as an Up Close and Personal post for your alternate-view enjoyment. [via Twitter] ) |
Honeycomb Theme for CM7 gets you as close to Honeycomb as possible Posted: 03 Mar 2011 10:26 AM PST Even though Android 3.0 Honeycomb was just released recently, and is a Tablet based OS. It hasn’t stopped many of the developers at XDA from porting it to just about as many devices as possible. Here’s just a few, Honeycomb port for Nexus One, or the HTC Desire Port, even the all popular EVO got a Honeycomb Port. For some wiping out all of their data and flashing a completely new ROM that may, or may not be fully functioning is out of the question. Luckily for you I have the easiest way to get some Honeycomb. (for CM7 users that is)
This actually not only shows some great theme work by xda member haxzamatic but it also shows just how extremely powerful the T-Mobile Theme Engine really is. This has the capability to change the entire look, and feel of your Android device, and very quickly. Even better is it does all this without flashing anything. I must mention that this theme is only available for anyone running CyanogenMod 7. The CM team supports a very wide variety of phones so check it out. It may also work with phones running a CM7 Port for a phone not supported by CM. Basically the Theme Engine lets you install a theme apk, then apply it using the Engine. It’s very straightforward, Like Metamorph only easier. Install Instructions: -Download the Honeybread.apk Enjoy! Latest Version: For more pictures, and information go ahead and check out the source link below. [via XDA Forums] ) |
Sony Ericsson Arc System Dump in the Wild Posted: 03 Mar 2011 09:46 AM PST For those of you that love Sony Ericsson and may have a x10, or any of their other Android phones. This might have some juicy stuff for you to use and enjoy. The amazing dev’s over at XDA-Developers have pulled a system dump of the Xperia Arc. Things of this nature usually contain all the files you would typically want, and now you can get them and enjoy it on your other Sony Ericsson phone.
Usually the goodies from a system dump include some of the following: ringtones, sounds, wallpapers, apps, home launcher if not stock, widgets, and more. It looks like people have already begun to use the Sony Ericsson Launcher, and many of the cool widgets, such as the scrollable image gallery widget. Check out the source link below to get your taste of the system dumb from the Gingerbread powered Xperia Arc. While your here you can also read about the Xperia X10 gets Gingerbread courtesy of the Arc. [via XDA Forums] ) |
Rooting your new Xoom will make it ineligible for 4G upgrade, or will it? Posted: 03 Mar 2011 09:17 AM PST For all you happy new Motorola Xoom owners there seems to be some news floating around about rooting the device that may have you putting on the brakes. It seems that over in the Motorola forums a few members have asked a few questions regarding root, software changes, and how this may affect the 4G upgrade. An official employee at Motorola has answered it sort of, but I’ll explain that below
The forum member asked this question, “Rooting the Xoom – will this make it ineligible for 4G upgrade?” This question is more than one question at the same time so I will explain both. He is wondering if simply rooting your Xoom will make you ineligible for the 4G upgrade, or the OTA software upgrade. Someone quickly answers but they aren’t from Motorola, so that answer should be taken lightly. Later down the forum a employee mentions he has upgraded the question and is waiting for an official response. We’ll be sure to update you guys on what we hear. From my understanding, rooting only gives you more access to your device, that you bought. It wont stop you from getting an OTA update, unless you change to a 3rd party ROM or custom software, but if you’re flashing those I’m assuming you know that. So the main question becomes this, if we root our Xoom, and unlock it, will the Verizon stores still do the “hardware” upgrade to 4G. Or did rooting just void the warranty? Usually you can unroot so I personally don’t see this being a large issue. Hold for more information as it comes in. [via Motorola Forums] ) |
Android’s Marketshare Tossed Back and Forth by Nielsen Posted: 03 Mar 2011 08:32 AM PST It seems like every couple of days now there’s a new report saying that Android is either the fastest growing group in the Mobile world or that it’s not even close to being up on top – Nielsen today reports that it’s sort of both. In a November 2010 – January 2011 report, Nielsen shows that although Android holds the top position in OS marketshare, but loses out on being the strongest because of its reliance on third-party manufacturers such as HTC, Motorola, Samsung, and all the rest.
These statistics show the manufacturer operating system share for smartphones to be clearly dominated by Apple and RIM BlackBerry if you’re talking about groups that both produce their own OS and their own hardware, but they get ever-so-slightly inched out by Android if you’re just talking about operating system dominance. Of course down below all of these by a significant amount is Windows Phone 7, then Palm/Web OS, then Symbian. In an additional study in the same vein, Nielsen shows Android to be winning in the younger age bracket, with ages sliding toward an older crowd as the chart moves to Apple, then BlackBerry. The oldest crowd appears to be preferring Symbian, while the very youngest crowd loves, believe it or not, Windows Phone 7. Will Google be happy when they see these results? Hard to tell. Will they agree that they’re in a weaker position than Apple or BlackBerry because they don’t manufacture their own gear (other than the Nexus One and Nexus S, of course?) We really REALLY doubt it. Android is very clearly racking up a gigantic market share for the age that it is, and it’s showing no signs of slowing down because of a market of several manufacturers. In fact if you asked us, we’d say they were stronger for it since these makers of devices are pitted against one another in a fight for the greatest piece of hardware. Greatness unfolds! Android BlackBerry Messenger app due this year claim sources Posted: 03 Mar 2011 07:03 AM PST RIM’s BlackBerry Messenger IM service could be coming to Android, according to the latest rumors out of the Canadian company. BGR‘s sources claim that RIM is looking to launch feature-lite versions of BBM for Android and iOS later in 2011, in the hope of luring users across to BlackBerry phones with the promise of full functionality. The Android and iOS apps, as described, would have basic text messaging support, but not be able to share multimedia or location information. That would be limited to real BlackBerry phones. Pricing is also unconfirmed; RIM is apparently considering making the apps free, but is also looking at potentially charging for individual downloads or even an ongoing service charge. The leak comes after Facebook acquired Beluga, a popular cross-platform IM service that had been compared to BBM. [via SlashGear] ) |
Android developer rallies support to fight what he claims is unfair treatment by Google Posted: 03 Mar 2011 06:40 AM PST There are hordes of apps on the Android Market for all sorts of needs. Some of the apps make huge money for the developers and others just sort of take up space. One developer is mad at Google after one of his money making apps was pulled with no explanation from the Android Market.
The app in question is called Rapid Download and according to the developer, Google didn't even tell him it had been pulled. He only found out when the money stopped coming in from sales. The guy apparently contacted Google repeatedly and on the third time, someone finally responded. The catch is that he claims the only details offered were generic and he still doesn’t know why the app was pulled. The dev also notes that the statement from Google with the vague general info also had a threat that if he violated the rules again all his apps could be pulled. The guy is fighting back and rallying other devs to fight with him if they feel they have been treated unfairly. I wonder if this will turn into some sort of class action. [via Engadget] ) |
NVIDIA confirms Tegra 2 in some Samsung Galaxy S II handsets Posted: 03 Mar 2011 04:02 AM PST NVIDIA has apparently confirmed that some versions of the Samsung Galaxy S II will indeed ship with its Tegra 2 dual-core chipset, while other versions will use Samsung’s own Exynos processor. The company told ITProPortal of the (partial) design win, and while explanations as to the doubled supply haven’t been forthcoming, it’s assumed that Samsung’s production line isn’t quite up to manufacturing the sheer number of chips required. Interestingly, at least one retailer has said that it still doesn’t know which version of the Galaxy S II it will be receiving, claiming Samsung is yet to confirm the chip difference to them. Performance from the two models should be in line with each other, though, so we’re guessing this is a temporary victory for NVIDIA while Samsung ramps up its factories. [via TechTicker] ) |
Sony Ericsson XPERIA X10 gets Gingerbread courtesy of Arc Posted: 03 Mar 2011 01:54 AM PST Sony Ericsson may have abandoned Android OS update plans for the XPERIA X10, but that doesn’t mean the modding community is done with the smartphone. Over at xda-developers, TripNRaVeR has fashioned nothing less than Android 2.3 Gingerbread for the X10, based on the version running on the XPERIA Arc. So far, the list of what’s working far outnumbers what isn’t, though the ROM download is currently offline so that sound support can be added in. Still, network, data, WiFi, Bluetooth, GPS and Sony Ericsson’s Timescape all work as expected. ) |
HTC Merge at FCC, Verizon Branded, Still CDMA World Capable Posted: 02 Mar 2011 08:45 PM PST This is the HTC Merge, a CDMA world phone that’s got a lovely slide-out QWERTY keyboard and a healthy dose of Android on board. It’s found its way to an FCC review now, carrying with it the Verizon tag meaning that it will be at least one of the carriers allowed to work with the handset in the near future. Another CDMA world phone offered by Verizon is the Blackberry pwning Motorola Droid Pro, a phone we used constantly whilst rolling through Mobile World Congress 2011 due to its global abilities and sweet big face with tiny keyboard below – would we rather be rolling with a big fat flip-out landscape keyboard such as this? You can bet on it.
Along with your everyday information on radiation and whatnot, this FCC filing came will lots of photos of the device, both inside and outside. Battery, camera, casing, everything your heart could possibility desire. Take a peek in the gallery below to get a better idea of what will be going on with this phone as far as hardware goes, then tell us if it looks familiar to you in any way at all. Looks rather similar to quite a few of the newer HTC line to us, what with the lovely brushed metal and all. To see more of the FCC post, head over to the following link and get to clicking: [here ye go]. Let us know below if you find anything else of complete and utter interest to humanity as a whole. This being a phone you can use essentially anywhere in the world, we’re looking for society-changing bits and pieces we can put together to tell the future! [via PhoneScoop] ) |
HTC Android Stickers Unto Battery Backs [AC EVENT SECURITY SERIES] Posted: 02 Mar 2011 06:57 PM PST We’ve been digging through out Mobile World Congress 2011 albums these past few days and just a moment ago we discovered this little gem. Can you tell what’s going on here? It’s taking place at the HTC stand, the same day the Facebook phones and the Flyer were released, earlier in the day, before they were put out. Perhaps some background information would be helpful: MWC 2011 was riddled with whispers of theft and misplacement of products, many cell phones and other such devices being stolen because security was no more than a lock on the battery cover of many devices. HTC had the most brilliant idea here to combat such evil – stickers!
That’s right, HTC decided that instead of having people take off their battery pack covers, instead of running the risk that they too would fall victim to the device snatchers, they’d up their security with some official Android stickers all along the backs of their devices. Did it work? Maybe – we didn’t hear a single report of an HTC product being stolen. On the other hand, they did have some trouble with people taking handfuls of their allotted amount of Android pins from Google. Oh well! ) |
ATRIX 4G Battery Cover with Duct / Metal Tape [AC Event Security Series] Posted: 02 Mar 2011 06:42 PM PST Our series on security measures taken at press events continues here with a bit of tape placed between the batter and the battery cover on a Motorola ATRIX 4G Android smartphone at the Motorola booth at Mobile World Congress 2011. As we mentioned in the last post in this series, Mobile World Congress had more than one rumor going around about stolen devices at stands throughout the giant event. Where HTC decided it smooth to add Android stickers to the backs of their phones, Motorola had a slightly less obvious tactic in play.
As we had a close peek at the ATRIX 4G, (which we since have been blessed with our own personal version of,) we popped the battery cover off of the back like any inquisitive tech blogger would. Being a part of the android community and a writer for Android Community means I personally am bound by unspoken law to have to see what’s going on under the battery cover of every single Android device. Once we tried harder than we’d normally have to to remove the cover, it became apparent that a bonus obstruction was in play – some big fat heavy tape. Well played, Motorola, this is already the best solution, or should I say jimmy-rigging job we’ve seen put in place to secure down an Android device at a media event. Bonus points for invisibility to the non-hardcore users and viewers. Also, just so you know, we put the batter cover back on after we shot these few photos, so no worries for you! ) |
Motorola XOOM to Lauch with Flash in Early April [EURO] Posted: 02 Mar 2011 03:08 PM PST So you fancy yourself one of those silver-backed Motorola XOOM tablets from Europe, do you? Perhaps you’ve been antsy to see what the release date on the UK version was, yes? Perhaps you’d like a bunch of information about the Motorola XOOM over on your side of the pond all in one handy-dandy place? Perhaps somewhere like a single blog post? We’ve got one of those right here!
First of all, lets discuss the price on the XOOM via PC World, a retailer set up in the UK. The price on the pre-order of this lovely device was £449.99 yesterday, but today has jumped to £499.99. Although this may seem just horrible, PC World will maintain, if you ask them, that the original page with this price wasn’t meant to be seen by mere mortals, as evidenced by a lack of a purchase button. Truth! This listing is for the the Wifi-only version of the tablet and PC World says that this will be the very first opportunity people in Europe will have to own the device. On the other hand, your friendly retailer Carphone Warehouse will have the UK 3G version of the Honeycomb tablet somewhere inside April, but aside from a page where you can click allegiance to the cause, no more evidence of a price or actual solid date are to be found. Finally, no matter where you get your XOOM, just so long as you’re in Europe and you’re getting the tablet inside April, the device will instantly have Adobe Flash Player. Lucky you! That is, if you don’t consider the fact that by that time, everyone else who has a XOOM will also have the same flash capability. Fun! BONUS: The same fellow who brings you the lovely information about the XOOM having flash right away in the UK also notes that he has information that leads him to believe the tablet will be £499 in the UK. Probably his source is the same as ours on that (again, PC World.) And all of this with a lovely silvery metal behind! ) |
HTC Wildfire S Dump and ROM (plus HTC HuaShan as a bonus!) Posted: 02 Mar 2011 02:15 PM PST Man oh man has the HTC Wildfire been getting around lately. Last time we spoke with her, she was getting a bit of the ol’ Android 3.0 Honeycomb installed for a lookaround, now we see she’s got a whole dump and ROM available for the public. Would you like to see it? Would you also like to get your hands on the same stuff for the HuaShan? Lets have a look-see and find out what we can find!
You’ll be able to check out the following files, if you dare, thanks to XDA Developers Forum member alexdiaz who in turn thanks HTC, 911Sniper, TMartin, kf2mq, and xHausx for their help in both finding and hosting the files you’ll need to be exploring these lovely systems. Have a look at http://u.115.com/file/t38cce84f4 for the HuaShan HTC Sense Gingerbread setup. If you’d like instead to take a peek at the HTC Generic Wildfire S files, head over to http://u.115.com/file/t35e622a14 and click around a little bit. If neither of these links are functional by the time you get to them, head back over to the original XDA Developers thread to get your mirror on, as several extra links to the same files are provided. Sprint Special Event at CTIA Invites Sent Out Posted: 02 Mar 2011 01:43 PM PST Sprint has just sent out some fabulously well-formatted invites to publishers across the board today, us included, for what appears to be an announcement event at this year’s CTIA in Orlando Florida. It’s approximately time for Sprint to be letting loose another phone (or similar such device) and we’re interested to see how much Android is actually floating around inside it. This event will of course be in Orange County along with the rest of the CTIA festivities, so we hope we’ll be able to pick a few off the nearby trees for sustenance during the keynote.
The very last news bit we’ve reported on having to do with Sprint was further information regarding the journey the everloving Epic 4G has taken on its road to Android 2.2 Froyo. Not just because of this, but certainly with this in mind, we’re hoping for some Gingerbread-and-up devices to be blown out the doors when we’re siting in the audience at this lower United States event. Florida, if you’re as hot as you were last time I was there, so help me… ) |
Motorola XOOM Wifi Price Inflation Posted: 02 Mar 2011 01:22 PM PST One of the most important things you can do when it comes to listing a product on the internet is to make sure the numbers are correct. One of the most important place in a listing of a product for the numbers to be correct is in the price of the product. If the price of a product, especially one so well-covered as the XOOM, costs one price one day, then another price the next, people are going to notice. That sort of thing went down today at PC World where yesterday the price of the Motorola XOOM Wifi version cost £449.99 yesterday, and £499.99 today. Not the best thing to be revealed on the day Apple announces their new iPad to be costing the same $499 USD as it did when it didn’t have a 2 listed after it.
This is of course the UK listing of the item, and again, PC World is only one retailer, but the echos of this mistake will be heard in the halls of Android for at least a few days, we assure you. Now to get down to comparing the two powerhouse tablets to one another to decide which one we’re going to buy. Is that really the decision most people will be making? You be the judge. Take a peek at our initial Motorola XOOM vs iPad 2 post to see how this battle will go down, commenting if you dare on how the choice might ultimately be between operating systems, not hardware, as the prices seem to be rapidly approaching an even point. Or perhaps the weight of the tablets is your sort of thing – or the thickness? – thanks for the tip, Theo! ) |
KittehFace Dynamic Paint Beta [Mini Review] [Live Wallpaper Gurus Newest Project] Posted: 02 Mar 2011 01:02 PM PST On the whole, we here at Android Community tend to steer clear of any news about live wallpapers since they’re not exactly the biggest news bit in the whole world. However, once we met one of the fellows in charge of KittehFace, aka the group that creates basically every popular live wallpaper in the Android Marketplace PERIOD, we thought hmmm, maybe we should see if they’d like to give us some sweet updates when they release new projects? Turns out they DO want to give us updates, and we’ve got one right here: Dynamic Paint, a brand new live wallpaper released today in Beta form.
This wallpaper splatters paint on a stone wall that is your handset. This wallpaper works as it says it does, dynamically, splattering colors here and there, sinking into the stone as it does so. This splattering happens both in ghost mode, that being when you’re not accessing your home screens, and live, splattering back and forth according to where your finger touches the screen. There are always two colors of paint splashing back and forth, and when they come in contact with one another, they mix. Very neato. KittehFace lets us know that this is just a beta release of the wallpaper (its completely free, too!), and that they’d be super appreciative if everyone downloaded the app to see how it functions on their Android handset. If you do download this live wallpaper, please feel free to contact KittehFace via the app in the Android Marketplace or comment here below. Thanks in advance! ) |
Posted: 02 Mar 2011 12:25 PM PST Welcome to the main event. This is the war everyone’s been waiting for, ever since the idea of an Android tablet first came into fruition. Now we’ve got a Honeycomb optimized tablet, the first of its kind, and the second generation of Apple’s main gun, the iPad, the tablet that got this wild ball rolling. Will iPad 2′s lower price (still 499) be enough to knock the Tegra 2-toting XOOM out of the park? Or will it be the XOOM’s open-source access and heavy-metal attitude that punches the iPad 2′s white-or-black front-having face into the dirt? Let’s have a lovely look!
First, lets start with the lady we’ve been working with for the past few days and weeks – the Motorola XOOM. This is the tablet that Google has worked on officially to optimize the Android Honeycomb experience. Inside this device, Android 3.0 Honeycomb thrives in a WXGA 10.1-inch display that’s got 1280 x 800 pixel resolution. The dimensions of the device are 9.80 x 6.61 x 0.51 inches (249 x 167.8 x 12.9 mm) and the weight is right around 25.75 oz (730 g). Also inside you’ll find a dual-core Tegra 2 processor by NVIDIA and a list of additional items a mile long: accelerometer, CDMA800 /1900 LTE 700, Rx diversity in all bands connection, GPS, headphone jack, Wifi 802.11 a/b/g/n, microUSB, HDMI out, Bluetooth 2.1, and over 8 hours of heavy-use battery time, with 24 hours of standby (with supposedly a max at 14 days.) As far as cameras go, the XOOM has a 2 megapixel webcam on front and a 5 megapixel 720p-capturing photo and video camera on the back with dual-LED flash. Then there’s the iPad 2. This devices is running Apple’s new iOS 4.3, comes with a dual-core A5 processor by Cortex, has one camera on the front and other on back, the front being a VGA 30 frames per second webcam with audio and VGA-quality still shots. The back camera is capable of 720p HD 30-fps video again with audio and a still camera with unknown capabilities. The screen is the same 9.7-inch LED backlit LCD as the original iPad, but with a 33% thinner and 15% lighter frame and a fingerprint-resistant oleophobic coating.. Battery will last you up to 10 hours of heavy play, there’s a built in gyroscope, accelerometer, ambient light sensor, digital compass, HUSPA support, HDMI out, and a button that allows you to choose between insta-mute and screen orientation lock. Video support for the following: H.264 video up to 720p, 30 frames per second, Main Profile level 3.1 with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps, 48kHz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats; MPEG-4 video, up to 2.5 Mbps, 640 by 480 pixels, 30 frames per second, Simple Profile with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps per channel, 48kHz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats; Motion JPEG (M-JPEG) up to 35 Mbps, 1280 by 720 pixels, 30 frames per second, audio in ulaw, PCM stereo audio in .avi file format. You can choose between Wifi and Wifi with 3G, The device is 9.5 x 7.31 x .34 inches and weighs in at 1.33 pounds. + for those of you who like a slightly different vision of the same info: OS Android 3.0 Honeycomb OS iOS 4.3 What are you primary concerns when looking into a possible tablet? Is it cost? Is it branding? Is it availability of certain apps? How about weight? How about the look of the actual device? Are you in to the new iPad 2 white? Would you like a XOOM silver Euro edition? If you had to choose between the two right now, which one would come out on top? We’ve got a slight bias in I think you know which direction, but at the risk of sounding like a betrayer to the cause, we wouldn’t mind having an iPad 2 lying around the house too. ) |
