Vizio’s Newest Smartphone Wins FCC Approval Posted: 16 May 2011 06:57 PM PDT
It was only earlier this year at CES when we learned that Vizio was going to be taking a dive into the Android smartphone market (everyone’s doing it these days) and even caught a brief glimpse of their upcoming smartphone. But things have been strangely quiet since then. We haven’t heard or seen any kind of leak of their upcoming handset — until now. Thanks to the good ‘ol FCC, we see that Vizio is still, in fact, on track and bringing us their Android powered smartphone they debuted back in January. The phone in question is the VPHN1044G. This device is said to come equipped with a 4-inch 854×480 LCD screen with a front facing camera, 1GHz (2nd gen?) Snapdragon processor, 4GB of RAM (WOW) and support for expandable memory. On the software side its going to come with either Android 2.2 or 2.3 and Vizio’s own Honeycomb-ish UI thrown on top. The FCC filing is also showing support for GSM 850 and 1900 bands and WCDMA bands II and V which means this device will most likely launch for AT&T. One of the most unique and useful features of the phone is that it comes with an IR receiver so that it can be used as a fully functional universal remote on Vizio’s full line of televisions and others. If priced right, I think this phone could win over a few people. It definitely has the looks, function and style to set it apart from the already crowded Android market. [Via WirelessGoodness] |
T-Mobile Blocking 3G Video Chat on the Nexus S Posted: 16 May 2011 03:49 PM PDT
The Nexus S received native video chat support via GTalk through the recent Android 2.3.4 update, but if you have the Google handset on T-Mobile you might be having a bit of trouble using the new feature over a 3G connection. Carriers apparently have the final say in exactly how video chat is enabled, and TMo has decided to only allow such calls over a Wi-Fi connection. This isn’t the case with Sprint’s Nexus S 4G Video chat works both over a cellular data connection and Wi-Fi. Their Nexus S also is cat approved, as evidenced by the below video. [via Engadget] |
Amazon working up two Android tablets under “Coyote” and “Hollywood” code names Posted: 16 May 2011 02:55 PM PDT
A new report is again confirming that Amazon is developing multiple Android tablets for release this year, and they don’t look to be low-powered e-readers, either. The two known devices are currently going under code names, with the “Coyote” aiming at a lower price point and hosting NVIDIA’s Tegra 2 dual-core CPU. The one that should get you really excited, however, is the “Hollywood,” which is rumored to be getting NVIDIA’s next generation Tegra 3 quad-core processor known by its own code name Kal-El. Given that NVIDIA is aiming for Tegra 3 devices by late summer/early fall, that should give us a fairly good idea of when we will be seeing at least one of Amazon’s tablets. There is also still a chance we might see an Android smartphone by Amazon, but take all of this information as rumor for now. [via BGR] |
Samsung’s May 24th NYC Event Postponed Posted: 16 May 2011 02:06 PM PDT
Whatever Samsung was planning on showing at their May 24th press event will have to wait. Word has just hit the inbox that the event is being postponed. Samsung did not provide a new date for the event but assures us that as soon as new details are squared away they will let us know. Speculation is that the NYC unveiling will feature the new Galaxy Tab 10.1, which last made headlines as one of a few giveaway items at this year’s Google I/O. The limited edition white version of the Tab 10.1 has experienced a few minor issues, but nothing that doesn’t seem easily fixed via software tweaks. Don’t worry, we’ll still be there covering the news as it breaks, we just can’t say for sure when that will be. We’ll pass along new info as soon as we have it. |
One More Leak for the Road: Dual-Core HTC Puccini with Honeycomb Posted: 16 May 2011 12:45 PM PDT
We simply can’t escape the amount of information coming from a set of HTC system leaks today. We are now learning more information about the HTC Puccini, one of the upcoming Honeycomb slates HTC plans to launch after their first tablet, the Flyer. From information pulled from build file, the Puccini will get a 800×1280 display most likely sized at 10.1-inches, an MSM8660 dual-core chip, and AT&T LTE support. That last part might clue us off to when we could see this next-gen tablet from HTC. AT&T is rumored to be firing up their LTE network by midsummer, so a device compatible with the new network wouldn’t be expected until late summer or early fall at the earliest. That should leave plenty of time for HTC to polish up their new Honeycomb Sense UI for release. [via 911sniper] |
Droid X2 Most Likely Won’t Launch with Gingerbread Posted: 16 May 2011 12:07 PM PDT
Last week leaked documents detailing the launch of the Motorola Droid X2 seemed to indicate that the device would launch with Android 2.3, but new information is making it look pretty unlikely that the X2 will be Verizon’s first Gingerbread phone. Sources talking to Droid Life have refuted the claim, saying that though the MotoBlur overlay of the X2 matches that of the original Droid X’s leaked Gingerbread update, the new handset will in fact launch with Android 2.2. Speaking of the update for the original Droid X, Verizon won’t be launching that before the X2 gets its own Gingerbread upgrade. Further solidifying this rumor, word is VZW plans to advertise the Xperia Play as the network’s first Gingerbread phone. If you recall, the latest we have heard is that the Play will launch in tandem with the X2 on May 26th. How much longer after launch could the Droid X2 receive Gingerbread? Hopefully it will be a matter of weeks rather than months, as the new Android version would look mighty fine on the upcoming dual-core handset. [via DroidLife] |
System Dump for the HTC EVO 3D Comes Online Posted: 16 May 2011 11:43 AM PDT
The HTC EVO 3D is jumping into the leak brigade, becoming the latest from the manufacturer to drop its system files online this fine Monday afternoon. The system dump comes courtesy of 911sniper, the same source as the numerous other ROMs that have surfaces today. The files are being picked apart as I type with plenty of goodies to come. The EVO 3D remains without a solid release date, though it is due this summer. If it follows in the footsteps of the original EVO we might expect it in June, but with no word from Sprint we’ll just have to wait with bated breath. [via 911sniper] |
Early Gingerbread Build for the HTC Thunderbolt Leaks Posted: 16 May 2011 11:18 AM PDT
The floodgates have opened over at HTC, with new ROMs coming online today for the HTC Lead, Holiday, and now the HTC Thunderbolt The Thunderbolt leak is none other than a test build of the upcoming Android 2.3 Gingerbread update for Verizon’ first 4G LTE smartphone. HTC previously informed us that the plan is to launch the Gingerbread update by the end of Q2, giving the manufacturer a little over a month and a half to get testing squared away and a build finalized. Having a fairly functional leak this early is a good sign. [via DroidLife] |
Samsung Exhibit 4G and Gravity Touch 2 Coming to T-Mobile June 8th Posted: 16 May 2011 10:56 AM PDT
Not too long ago we got our first look at the Samsung Exhibit 4G, an upcoming HSPA+ device for T-Mobile. We now have confirmation the the Exhibit will be joining the HTC Sensation 4G along with another Samsung handset, the Gravity Touch 2, on June 8th. The Exhibit 4G will feature a 1GHz Hummingbird processor and dual cameras. The phone is dealer priced at $325 which translate to a $99-$199 price tag after $50 rebate. The Gravity Touch 2 (GT2) will feature a 3.2-inch display, 800MHz processor, and 3MP camera. Dealer pricing is $225 and a $50 rebate should bring the handset to a sub-$100 pricing. |
Leaked HTC Holiday ROM Reveals Handset in Beast Mode Posted: 16 May 2011 10:26 AM PDT
When we last saw a leaked render of the HTC Holiday, we speculated it might be a mid-range upgrade to the HTC Aria for AT&T. Boy, we’re we wrong. If details pulled from a leaked ROM for the device hold true the Holiday could have the sort of power that will put most other handsets to shame. We might expect a 1.2GHz dual-core Snapdragon CPU, a 4.5-inch qHD display, and 1GB of RAM. The Holiday looks to come with dual cameras on the front and back pegged at 1.3MP and 8MP respectively. Thrown in Bluetooth 3.0 and are you even thinking about any other handsets at this point? We have no idea when this device will hit AT&T, but a leaked render and ROM suggest a summer release is likely. [via AndroidPolice] |
HTC Lead for AT&T is a High-End Dual-Core Smartphone Posted: 16 May 2011 09:50 AM PDT
Looking for another high-end HTC handset on AT&T? PocketNow has now gotten specs to go along with a picture of the HTC Lead leaked sometime last week. Right away it sounds like AT&T’s version of the Pyramid or Sensation. It has a 4.3 inch display (but it’s only WVGA compared to qHD), Qualcomm’s MSM8660 1.2GHz dual-core Snapdragon processor, 768MB of RAM and looks like – well – every HTC phone released in 2011. (Save for that weird speaker grill at the top. That thing looks gnarly.) A 5 megapixel camera rounds the thing out but there is no front-facing camera, surprisingly, and there’s no word on whether or not this will come with HSPA+ radios. Sweet! We still don’t know which version of Android and Sense this one will come with, though, and a launch window has yet to be pegged. We could be in this one for the long haul. |
AT&T Issuing Updates to Select Android Phones to Enable Sideloading Posted: 16 May 2011 09:36 AM PDT
It’s time. Time for AT&T to give you a bit more freedom over your Android smartphone, that is. It’s been leaked that they’ll begin issuing updates to select Android handsets – including the HTC Aria and Inspire 4G and the Samsung Captivate – that’ll allow users to sideload applications. (IE, install applications from sources outside of the Android market.) We knew of their plans back when the Amazon Appstore launched. AT&T had a page specifically for the incompatibility and assured everyone that updates would allow users to take advantage of Amazon’s Appstore in the near future. They didn’t hint toward what solution they’d be going for at that time. (Some speculated they were working with Amazon to customize the Appstore to install applications without using Android’s native .APK installer. We’re glad they just chose to open the phones up, though. I t’s worthy to note that the newly-released Samsung Infuse 4G already has this functionality. And oddly enough, Motorola’s stable of phone – including the dual-core ATRIX 4G – are missing from the equation. Let’s hope that changes sometime soon. [AC] |

Plants vs Zombies Coming Exclusively to Amazon’s Appstore May 30th Posted: 16 May 2011 08:37 AM PDT
One of mobile’s biggest games – Plants vs Zombies has been in the works for a while and PopCap has confirmed that its release is imminent. It’ll be here at the end of this month and will be offered exclusively through Amazon’s Appstore. It wasn’t said whether or not this would be available through the Android market after some time (like Rovio did with Angry Birds Rio) but you will be happy to know that it will be free when it launches May 30th. You’ll have to take advantage on that day, though, because they’ll be setting the price at $2.99 from there on out. I’ve played this game on numerous platforms, and while I may be all Plants vs Zombie’d out, I can’t wait to take it for a spin on Android when it finally does debut. [via PocketGamer] |
LG Optimus 2X Firmware Upgrade Rolling Out to Europe to Fix Random Reboots Posted: 16 May 2011 08:17 AM PDT
A while back, we received numerous reports from brand new LG Optimus 2X owners regarding a very frustrating problem. The phones would often reboot themselves which obviously caused an undesirable disruption in user experience. We contacted our friends at LG to see if they knew anything of these problems, and they hadn’t. Still, they couldn’t deny the cries of many users at various message boards and sought an answer. Today, they’ve informed us that they’ve found the issue and have applied a fix.
Sounds good to me. Hopefully this fixes a majority of you guys’ issues. And we’re not sure if the problem plagues the US version of the phone – T-Mobile’s G2x – but we’re told the upgrade will be available in other regions at a later date. Anyone receive this thing OTA yet? And if so, has it fixed your problem? |
