Android Community 101: What is Flash Builder? (4.5)

Posted: 11 Apr 2011 11:02 AM PDT

Behold the great conquerer of world, the great unifier that works better than a big bar of chocolate, or so they’re hoping. This is Flash Builder 4.5, a version of the app to build apps that’ll soon create standalone Flex AIR apps that’ll work on Android, Blackberry, and Apple’s iOS, all inside the same framework! What this means, if it’s adopted by enough individuals, is that developers are about to have a whole heck of a lot easier time creating cross-platform moneymakers to turn awesome experiences into cash.

Flash Builder is what Makes a Flash-Based Project

Of course, that’s not the only reason people make apps, right, not just for the money – but it IS a reality, developers gotta get paid, so an Action Script language-based mini-platform in Flash might well be the answer. Flash, as we know it right this moment, is primarily used for video inside browser windows – people might argue that it’s attempting to fan out, and that it HAS fanned out, but the main functionality remains inside video. What this version of Flash Builder will be doing is encouraging developers to create apps that’ll run on essentially any platform that can work with a Flash plugin, or in the desktop’s case, Flex AIR.

PHP and Further Integration

This newest version of Flash Builder, there’s also support for PHP (another scripting language) that’ll allow developers to have PHP on their side, Flash on the user’s side, and this new development environment in between. This newest version of Flash Builder has also moved on to Eclipse version 3.6.1 (Helios) – Eclipse being another environment in which a developer of Android apps can create, edit, fix, and generally go wild. Have a peek at this official video from Adobe on this brand new version of the creator of Flash worlds:

Thunderbolt and Evo 4G Gingerbread update in late June

Posted: 11 Apr 2011 10:26 AM PDT

Both the HTC Thunderbolt and Evo 4G are scheduled to receive a Gingerbread update in late June, according to an email exchange with an HTC representative. The rep was responding to a frustrated customer who vented about the lack of the update in Verizon’s premiere 4G handset. The irony is, that Gingerbread has been out for over 4 months and most wireless handsets haven’t updated to it. It’s a common issue as updates have to go to the manufacturer, then be approved by the provider, before going to an over the air update.

Many just give up and either live with Froyo, or root their phones and install it themselves. The question though, is it really worth it to root a phone to get an update before the carrier and manufacturer decide to provide it? If you’re a Thunderbolt user it is since Gingerbread has better power management features, and let’s face it, the Thunderbolt needs all the help it can get in stretching battery life. Gingerbread improves app management, by limiting the time an app can keep the screen on and even closing apps that aren’t being used, if necessary. Settings also provide more accurate overview of battery life including the power being consumed by each component or app.

That alone is a good reason for these large screen 4G phones to get the update. But there’s NFC (Near Field Communications) support. With more merchants offering the option of paying with cellphones, NFC is a convenient feature. And then there’s multiple camera support where users can switch between the front and rear facing camera. Hopefully, if all goes well, both Thunderbolt and Evo 4G users will it their Gingerbread update by the end of June.

UK launch for Samsung Galaxy S II inked in as May 1

Posted: 11 Apr 2011 06:28 AM PDT

Samsung has confirmed that the Galaxy S II will arrive in the UK on May 1, going on sale across “all major networks.” Announced back at MWC 2011 in February, the dual-core Galaxy S II GT-I9100 will have a dual-core 1.2GHz processor, run Android 2.3 Gingerbread and offer WiFi b/g/n and Bluetooth 3.0.

There’s also a sizable Super AMOLED Plus display, the latest iteration of Samsung’s screen technology. On the back is a 1080p HD video capable 8-megapixel camera, with clips able to be squirted via WiFi over Samsung’s AllShare technology.

No word on pricing at this stage, at least not officially, though we’ve seen at least one UK retailer offer pre-orders on the Galaxy S II for £528 including VAT. We’d expect to see the handset offered free with new agreements via carrier subsidies, however.

Press Release:

The Galaxy S II is built for multi-tasking, its dual-core processor makes switching between applications and loading web pages such as Google, Yahoo and YouTube quick, whilst superior 3D hardware means games and videos can be loaded and played with ease. What’s more, there’s immediate access to content and services such as catch up TV and movie downloads, thanks to super-fast connectivity and WiFi, with speeds up to 21Mbps which provides increased download speeds, and Bluetooth 3.0+HS which reduces data transfer times significantly.

A new ‘Live Panel’ feature on the Galaxy S II allows aggregation of live web, social networking and application contents to a single customisable home-screen, whilst it’s possible to place all the important parts of your life onto three adjacent home screens which you can switch between simply by pressing and holding on the screen. As with all the Samsung Galaxy family, the Galaxy S II features Samsung Hubs, providing a huge range of entertainment content, advanced mobile games and the ability to manage social networking accounts.

Shinnyoji PetMemorial app is a digital pet monument

Posted: 11 Apr 2011 06:13 AM PDT

I would be willing to bet that you or someone you know is a big pet lover. We all know someone that has such a love for their dog or cat that the death of the pet is as hard as the death of a human for them to deal with. For the pet lover who has lost a pet an app is offered for Android devices called PetMemorial.

The app is designed to allow the owner to make a digital memorial to a deceased pet. The app will hold photos and other details on the deceased animal for the owner to view and share with others. The app allows the creation of a memorial frame.

The frame can be decorated with offerings, candles, flowers, and toys on the photos. Users can enter the pets birthday, the day the pet died, and other details. The app will also alert the user of the anniversary of the pets death.

Booyah Nightclub City DJ Rivals lands on Android

Posted: 11 Apr 2011 06:04 AM PDT

If you are a big fan of music and rhythm games, a new offering has landed on Android that has a RPG element to it as well. The game is called Booyah Nightclub City DJ Rivals. The game has been on the iPhone previously and this is the first time it has landed on Android.

The coolest thing about the game is that it allows players on the iPhone and Android devices to play against each other. The game uses GPS tech to use your location and the multiplayer mode is expansive. The location-based play lets you become the DJ at real stores and restaurants in your area to earn money in the game.

The game is a free download on the Android Market and on the App Store right now. "Following the success of MyTown on iOS and Nightclub City on Facebook, we are very excited about our first game on Android," said Brian Cho, director of business development, Booyah. "Mobile is the new frontier for gaming and we see a tremendous opportunity for DJ Rivals on the rapidly growing Android platform.”

Photoshop Touch apps on iPad open door for similar software on Honeycomb

Posted: 11 Apr 2011 03:46 AM PDT

If you are a big user of Photoshop for designing all sorts of photos and artwork or other apps in Creative Suite you may have been following the new touch apps that Adobe has for the Apple iPad. The apps include Adobe Color Lava for Photoshop, Adobe Eazel for Photoshop and Adobe Nav for Photoshop. The three apps turn the iPad into a remote panel for Photoshop image editing and manipulation using the new touch SDK.

The apps will do no one using Android tablets any good right now. The good news is that the apps are a sure sign of what is to come for Android devices. The software available right now won't run on Honeycomb tablets, but the Touch SDK that these iPad apps are using will work with Android.

That means that these apps or some very similar will eventually land on Android tablets. The three iPad apps are set to land next month at between $1.99 and $4.99 each making them affordable. The iPad apps can be used standalone or linked to Photoshop on a computer.

HTC Flyer pre-orders open: £599.99 for 7-inch slate

Posted: 11 Apr 2011 02:47 AM PDT

HTC’s 7-inch tablet, the Flyer, has gone up for pre-order at UK retailer Carphone Warehouse (along with their Best Buy Mobile arm). Currently only available off-contract, the HTC Flyer is being offered for £599.99 with no data plan, SIM-lock or agreement; that means buyers will be able to slot in a SIM of their own and not lock themselves into a two-year data plan if they don’t want to.

Specs are just as we’ve seen before, so a 1024 x 600 capacitive touchscreen that works with both finger input and the HTC Scribe active digital stylus, a 5-megapixel camera on the back and a front-facing webcam. The stylus can be used to annotate webpages and create handwritten notes, which can then be sync’d to Evernote.

£599.99 isn’t cheap, but we’d expect to see subsidized deals when the Flyer gets broader availability. We’re still excited about the pen possibilities, though others have expressed concerns that the slate is over-priced considering the rest of the tablet market today. Are you tempted?

Update: Carphone Warehouse tells us that, despite the listing saying the Flyer is currently in-stock, the tablet won’t ship until May 2011.

LG G2x next in line for CyanogenMod 7? I think so [Pics included]

Posted: 10 Apr 2011 11:15 PM PDT

In case you guys didn’t know, the latest and greatest release of CyanogenMod 7 was just released tonight, you can read about that here. It has just reached the “stable” milestone so that basically means it is rock solid. For those that are worried about the AT&T-Mobile merger and what phone to get, or are wondering what Android is right for me. I have a clear choice for you, the LG G2x!

There is a few reasons I say that. First off it is an amazing device, with the well known Nvidia Tegra 2 dual-core processor, as well as all the other specs you should know by now. To get more familiar with the phone you can read all about the G2x here. Then there is reports that the LG G2x is dual-band and will fully be supported on T-Mobile AND AT&T both. So if the buy out happens or not, your phone will be good to go.

Here is the kicker, it will be getting the android communities favorite custom firmware, CyanogenMod 7. It comes stock with vanilla Android 2.2 a “Google Experience Device” so you know it will be about as butter smooth as a phone can get. There is also promise of Android 2.3 in the coming months for the G2x, but why wait for the OTA update when you can have Android 2.3 Gingerbread on your shiny new G2x within a week or so of you getting the device. @Kmobs on twitter, a Team Douche member has tweeted a few times that the G2x will be getting CM7 and that it is a work in progress. See the photo’s below if you don’t believe me.

So in closing I’m going to say that for anyone trying to decide on what device is next for them, or if the G2x is worth the buy? I say absolutely. The HTC Pyramid will be a beast but we don’t know if it will be locked down like other recent phones. The G2x is really a winner in almost all area’s. It’s dual-core, vanilla android, updates will come fast, already rooted and has clockwork recovery, CyanogenMod support, hdmi out, AT&T-Mobile dual-band ready. It is a no brainer really. I think I’ll be pre-ordering my own come April 15th. Will you be getting the G2x? Tell us below in the comments, in our forum, or even better, come hang out and “Like” us on Facebook!

Motorola Atrix goes on sale for less than $50 at Amazon

Posted: 10 Apr 2011 05:45 PM PDT

This weekend, Amazon put the Motorola Atrix on sale for $49.99 with a two year deal. And they were VERY quiet about it too. The sub $50 price tag is the lowest the Atrix has been advertised for to date and shows that Amazon is being pretty aggressive with this Android phone. The sale is still available until midnight tonight, so if you’ve been wanting to get your this new 4G phone from AT&T, you better hurry, because the clock is ticking.

One word of warning though, the price is for NEW customers only, if you’re an existing customer with Ma Bell, you’ll be looking at a $99.99 price to upgrade. Amazon is also offering $100 off the Laptop Dock Accessory for those who purchase the phone as well. A coupon code will be emailed within 10 business days after purchase and will be good for up to 60 days. Sounds like a screaming deal if you can jump on it.

The Motorola Atrix is the flagship of AT&Ts 4G network. It won the Best in Show from CES this year for it’s innovative design and accessories to turn it into a viable laptop computer. It has a 1 Ghz dual core Tegra 2 processor, 1 GB of RAM, and a 4 inch qHD touchscreen display with 24 bit color. It’s powered by Android 2.2 (Froyo), sadly, but we’re certain Gingerbread will come as soon as AT&T gets around to it. So if you’re not an AT&T customer and are just looking for an excuse to get the Atrix, here it is!

Xperia Arc used to remotely drive a car

Posted: 10 Apr 2011 05:27 PM PDT

Remember the scene in Tomorrow Never Dies where James Bond is being chased by the bad guys and he drives his rental car remotely from the back seat with his cellphone? Great idea, great scene, completely ridiculous … or is it? Well, Sony wanted to see just how responsive the Exmor sensors and the Bravia Engine displays of the Xperia Arc smartphones. So, they used them to drive a car with no other means of seeing outside. The result is a rather wild video.

Now they didn’t actually use the Arc as a remote control device. Face it, that’s more the Xperia Play’s style. But what they did do is completely black out the windows and forward and rear windshields except for two small holes which fit a pair of Xperia Arc Smartphones. Then, placing the phones in video mode, the driver had a stereo view of the outside world with which to drive over a closed course. And we’re not talking a race track either, this was the back woods, a deserted town near a cliff face. The drive then had to navigate using only the stereo video images he saw on the phones.

It’s both an impressive and intense video to watch as the driver has his work cut out for him keeping the car steady in real time while relying on the images shown to him by both phones. Of course, the driver is a professional who is trained to deal with test track issues, but this idea not only pushes his skills to the limit, but it also shows just how responsive the Exmor sensor and Bravia Engines are inside the Xperia Arc. But it’s also important to remember that Sony doesn’t want you to take your Arc and try this on your own, it’s a professional, closed course, controlled conditions, yada yada yada. And even though it isn’t 007, but it’s pretty cool nonetheless.

You can watch the video in glorious HD over at the Sony Ericsson website.

Tablets quickly becoming the new TV

Posted: 10 Apr 2011 04:54 PM PDT

As if the Cable TV companies didn’t have enough to worry about, there comes a new global survey to suggest that tablets are rapidly becoming the entertainment device of choice ahead of televisions and PCs. The survey, conducted by Google Mobile, found that 77% of those asked reduced usage of their PCs after buying a tablet computer. Of that 77%, 43% say a tablet has replaced their computers altogether. Additionally, a full 1/3 of those surveyed stated that they use their tablets more often for entertainment than their televisions. Further, 84% state they use their tablets to play games.

The results of the global survey only underscores what we already knew … that mobility and choice of when to watch what we want has been pushing the industry for awhile now. And with more people “cutting the cable” and getting rid of cable TV and satellite in favor of streaming television solutions via the Internet, the need to keep an open internet is even more vital. Viewers are turning to online portals such as Hulu, Netflix, and even Amazon to rent movies and TV Shows to what when they want. And iTunes shows no signs of slowing down with video downloads.

Hollywood has been keen to pick up on the trend, offering digital copies of movies with DVD purchases. But if these numbers truly hold, that measure was nothing more than a stop gap at best and as tablets become more popular and cheaper, the number of people using them as their primary entertainment tool will certainly climb. Then again, TV sales were brisk the last few years as America underwent the digital TV turnover. And when it comes right down to it, would users rather watch the Super Bowl on their tablet or that 60″ plasma in the living room? Guess it depends on if you’re home.

Google Acquires Pushlife, will be pushing music to Android

Posted: 10 Apr 2011 04:49 PM PDT

Google has talked more than a few times about music on Android. We all know that the music player isn’t one of Androids strong points, but all the Pros heavily outweight the music player. I use it daily and enjoy it. Today Google just took another step in the right direction. They have acquired a media company called Pushlife, site only saying that Google bought them now. The rest of the site is offline.

Pushlife is a very smart and fancy designed all-in-one music solution for all your needs, and hopefully will be the same way for Google. They’ve already been building for the Android and RIM platform, but today Google has purchased them for somewhere around $25 million. Pushlife for those that don’t know is a media solution similar to iTunes. You can stream music, buy music with a click, and even access your music from your PC on the cloud. This would be great for Android.

With automatic sync, Facebook and Twitter integration, what else would we need? The actual software, and Google has done just that by buying them out with hopes to make it work for them on Android. I for one am happy to hear. We can probably expect to see some work in progess or a demo here at the upcoming Google I/O. This could be cloud music storage, 1-click buying and sharing, or even better it could be both. Check out the video below to see some of the cool things Pushlife can do, and get excited because it’s coming to Android.

ASUS Transformer gets an unboxing video

Posted: 10 Apr 2011 04:27 PM PDT

The ASUS Transformer Android 3.0 Honeycomb tablet is making a little splash at the moment, and with good reason. It is a beautiful Android 3.0 Honeycomb tablet that doubles as a pretty nice 10″ laptop. Comes with basically the best mobile OS ever created, and it has a powerful dual-core CPU as we all know. Today we get a little unboxing video.

Most of you should already be up to speed on this device, if not here is our good friends at our sister site SlashGears Hands-On of the Transformer, showing you all the neat little tricks ASUS has thrown onto this device.

With that textured backing for a secure grip, the firm and solid build quality with that aluminum ring around the entire edge, this tablet aims to please, and so does Asus. I’ve read a few comments over at the XDA forums where people are mentioning the build quality is as good as, if not better than the Xoom and the iPad 2. That is always a good sign. With the keyboard accessory making this the portable mans dream come true, what are you waiting for? We are waiting for a U.S launch is what. For those that don’t want to wait to play with it at Best Buy, check out the unboxing video below. Enjoy!
